You probably could ask any American in the store if they would temporarily adopt (sponsor) them for their one time visit by using their membership card at the register. Occasionally family members and friends will loan out their membership cards to each other. The cards just authorize the purchases to be scanned. Sometimes customer service will give a promotional day pass with a temporary membership card to entice a return trip. Shopping at Costco is typically a four week supply for the price of two. Bulk shopping is why our refrigerators and freezers are so large and versatile.

Gone are the days when you can borrow a card. I've been going to the same Costco for over 30 years and many of the long time associates acknowledge me at the door and/or at the check out... but they still double check that the card I'm using is actually mine. Here are a list of things you can do in Costco without a membership: 1) look around and try free samples 2) use the pharmacy 3) get an eye exam 4) eat at the food court 5) buy anything you want so long as you have a Costco Shop Card (their gift card) to use as your Costco ID at the register. seriously you don't even have to use the gift card to pay just to act as your Costco ID then pay by cash or credit. (the catch being you need someone who's a member to get you the gift card) 6) buy alcohol (only in 14 of the 50 states)

And again, it depends on State law (which changes all the time) about access to pharmacies, etc. In California you cannot get inside without a membership or cash card. And Costco stores are REALLY tightening up by checking the photo on the membership card to your face. A wife (or partner) can NOT use her husband's card to buy things. But if he, when he gets his card, shows she lives at the same address, her card is free.

Costco is the creation of a guy who had started a similar operation called Fedco in Southern California. It was deeply discounting everything. Cosco sells at very near cost on everything. They charge an annual fee, which is their profit center. It is unique in that regard. They pay employees incredibly well compared to other retail operations, and everyone works hard to keep costs down. The founder had a bad hearing loss and got pissed about hearing aid prices. So he managed to get the laws changed that limited their sales to only specialty hearing centers. Then he set up hearing testing and sales using only the very latest instruments. The tests are free, and the aids--all top brands and state of the art, are 25 percent of what you pay at a specialty operation. That brought prices down everywhere.

Organic means that the fertilizer used to feed the plant is made from living things from nature, like egg shells, mollasis, kelp, peat moss, cow manure, dried grass. Organic fertilizer costs more. That's why the food costs more. Non-organic means that the plant was fed with a synthetic fertilizer. Synthetic fertilizer comes from oil by-products. By-products are the left over stuff from processing oil that normally gets thrown away. It's an artificial food for the plant. When you grow with synthetic fertilizer the food will have less flavor and less smell. Synthetic fertilizer is way cheaper for the farmers and makes the plants grow faster and bigger. That's why they prefer it. I learned all this from working in a garden supply store with professional gardeners that used to work in large commercial greenhouses in California. They know their stuff.

Just an FYI: all COSTCO prices are limited to a maximum of 15% profit. They have notable loss leaders as the quarter pound all beef USDA certified hotdogs with free refillable soda combo for $1.50, the $1.50 per slice pizza, $4.99 complete rotisserie chicken, etc. Name brand high end international chocolates and chocolate nuts, French and Australian wines, and many award winning products sold under Costco brands. Costco makes it's money primarily on it's membership prices. Basic: $60/yr. Higher: $120/yr. Organic: grown without pesticides or other man-made repellents. Naturally grown.

This is a very quiet Costco, the two near me are always super busy and there are usually some kids. Organic means that no artificial chemicals (like pesticides) or GMO are used growing the crops; the reason organic is more expensive is because it takes more time and manpower to grow it naturally since we use a lot of chemicals and generally unhealthy stuff to force grow large amounts of crops. While it's not always the case, a good deal of the big bags of snacks are a secondary container, with the individual snacks packaged inside. When I buy one of those big bins of greens (specifically Spinach) part of how I keep it fresh is by wiping the condensation of the inside of the lid before putting it back. Costco is pretty much the only place that still does samples, like on very rare occasion you'll have them run by a third party company, but beyond that pretty unheard of.

Costco, BJs, and Sams are all membership bulk shopping stores. It’s not like a regular super centers or grocery/retail stores. It’s a yearly membership and they are probably shopping with a friend who has a membership. You keep forgetting that the pound is usually worth 2.5 times as much as our $ so divide by that to get your pound equivalent.

Organic = no pesticides used or the livestock was raised eating organic feed. So in pasta, they used wheat grown without the use of pesticides, and in gummy bears, probably organic corn syrup, sugar, gelatin, and food coloring (whatever’s in that). As a current cancer patient this has become super important to me as of late. If an organic version of something exists, that’s what I’m buying.

In those bulk stores the pallets above the shelves with the products on them are just storage.

when you checkout, you have to have your membership card for the machine. that's why they can't buy stuff. but usually you can get a temporary card called a 'day pass' that is active for that day only. this is sort of a 'test drive' for the store to attract new members. I don't know why they couldn't get one, they don't explain, but all the stores do it. so it's really good for visitors (from other countries) BUT you don't need the card to buy from the food court. and they won't kick you out for not having a card, the door greeter will just direct you to the customer service desk.

I would argue that just because a product is listed as "organic" that it is healthier for you! All it means is that the product was grown or produced using no man made substances, which could simply mean fertilizers, anti-fungals or pesticides to ward off harmful pests! I think people get way too wrapped up into the phrase and just need to concentrate on what they put in their mouths, not so much how the thing was grown. I do acknowledge that some education should be implemented such as hormone free meats....but that being said, just be reasonable.
@saffron97
@saffron97 Месяц назад
Its not no man made substances, they just have a smaller list of approved fertilizers and pesticides. Though the issue is most people involved in the process just don't care, so they will just take their normal crops and slap an organic sticker on it. Stores have been caught when they have run out of organics just slapping organic stickers on normal products.
