New Yorker here - If you have one piece of pizza it’s called “a slice”. If you order a whole pizza it’s a “pizza pie” or just “a pie”. When you’re eating a slice the fold is a MUST! (I also sprinkle garlic powder and red pepper flakes on my slice 🍕
@BTinSF
@BTinSF 5 месяцев назад
No garlic powder! Out here in California where they grow garlic, you can buy very good finely minced garlic in olive oil in stores and you put THAT along with red pepper (preferably red Calabrian pepper) on the slice.

If you.need to add Garlic Powder, . . . You need to find a new Pizzeria. While Red Pepper Flakes are a legit option, the rest just tells me that the sauce is inadequate. This is normal for a chain restaurant, but not a good sign for a privately owned place.

@@PriscillaV1964 It’s just an automatic “go to” for me. Even if it’s already covered in yummy fresh minced garlic 🧄 I will STILL add garlic powder - just a personal preference 💕

@@PriscillaV1964 That's not true. Some people just really love garlic and they want a strong flavor of that. Many pizzeria's offer fresh garlic as an optional topping but you can just add it yourself at home if you are taking out the pizza. I like it mainly with vegetarian toppings like green pepper, black olives and it would be good with those cherry peppers. Sausages like pepperoni or Italian sausages usually don't need it.

@@mattb7578 You're familiar with "Sunday gravy" I'm sure which is "sauce" but called "gravy" though of a specific type. For those nowhere near New York and who've never watched The Sopranos, it's a tomato-based ragu long-simmered with a variety of meats like meatballs, pork ribs, bacciole--rolled flank or skirt steak--and so on. The gravy/sauce is served on pasta and the meat is eaten as a main course.

Chicago style pizza you have to eat fork and knife. You just can't pick it up. The Chicago Pizza that I've had in Chicago was like 3 and 1/2 in thick and the pizza crust underneath was only like half an inch thick so it's like half an inch of crust and another 2 and 1/2 in of toppings You just cannot eat it by picking it up, You have to use knife and fork.

Well everyone I know folds their pizza slices. I'm about 90 miles north of NYC in the Catskills Mountains so we are still within the Pizza Belt and follow city traditions. One of the things that makes NY pizza so damned good is the crust. And part of what makes the crust so good is the water, which has a mineral content that increases the flavor greatness. And where does that water come from? The very Catskills where I live. Needless to say, we have some kick ass NY style pizza in my area too. Oh, and interesting side note, the Catskills water is also why NYC bagels and baked goods are so damned good. Those natural dissolved minerals make a world of difference.

Your local 'Murican here. the term "pie" doesn't just relate to foods, like your fruit pies, pizza pies or pastries filled with meat pies. The term "pie" can also describe a shape, specifically a round or circular shape like a pie chart, or a pie pan. So a pizza pie is just a circular whole pizza, a slice of pizza is just a pizza but if you want a whole pizza, you get a pie.

From the outside it looks nothing like a church but as soon as you walk in you realize that the reason is because over the years the surrounding buildings were built around the former church to the point that you can no longer see the original structure. When you walk in you can find that instead of benches there are pews and all the beautiful stain glass windows are all still intact. As a native New Yorker IMO NYC is the pizza capital of the world. When I lived in California the pizza there was inedible. You don't put anything on pizza except pepperoni, hot pepper flakes, garlic powder, and salt. Cold beer is the perfect match for pizza. I also like pizza made in wood burning ovens which make it smokey. I think pizza ovens are 800 degrees F. NYC pizza has spread to the suburbs. I live about 50 miles from NYC and can get it here without any problems. The square ones with thick crust is called Sicilian pizza. The round ones with the thin crust is called Neapolitan pizza which is the default style and you always fold it. The only challenger is Chicago. Their style is called deep dish pizza. Pizza pie is sometimes just referred to as pie. We know what that means when someone says they could go for some pie.

We often debate what style of pizza is best. My dad always liked super thin crust (like NY). In the 70-80s, Pizza Hut would give you a free personal pan pizza for every 5 books you read, so being a bookworm, I enjoyed many pan pizzas (like Chicago deep dish). Once you find your favorite, no matter what someone says, you'll always enjoy it more. I discovered white pizzas in college (no tomato sauce, usually just cheese, garlic, and maybe a cream sauce). If you're craving cheesy garlicy goodness, that's the one to order.

Depending on where you are in the US, the size of the pizza slice, and the amount of toppings folding a pizza is the way to go. A traditional New York style pizza is always going to be a big pizza slice that you have to fold. The majority of pizzas outside of New York, especially the major pizza chains, do not do a New York style cut so it is more difficult to fold. Also most pizzas outside of New York have a thicker crust. You can ask for a Brooklyn style or New York style and they may try to do a thinner crust and cut it so you have bigger slices.
@jenelle11234

As a New Yorker, you got a fold your pizza. And Italian people eat pizza with a fork and knife because they get served the whole pizza and then they eat it with their fork and knife. That’s where it comes from I think. Also, if you go to New York to eat pizza since there’s so many pizza places to eat at I think you should go to at least like three or four different places depending on how long you’re there. You have to go to like one local small pizzeria that’s not really famous and then you have to go find like a nice famous one that everyone recommends to get like that special little extra New York flare , but if you want like true, honest New York pizza you just go for like a regular slice. And there are many pizza shops in New York that you’ll easily find something.

People in the US do commonly fold thin pizza. I would imagine it is required in New York. Try it sometime. It keeps the hot molten toppings from burning the roof of your mouth (at least for a little while) & it is more convenient to eat on the go. NY pizza is very good.
