The square patties are made to be juicy, and tender. Many Chefs when explaining how to make a burger will say to shape into a ball. Then press flat, then use thumb to press the center even flatter. When cooked, this will make the burger less juicy, and firmer as they protein strands contract. This information is only what I have read, as to why the patties are square.
Yup, I was a co-manager for several years until I went on to different things. They were actually a good place to work in the early 2000’s. I have no reference since I left.
The patties are stamped using a in store machine that ground beef is put in the hopper and the steel plate with the square hole insured each patty was exactly the same size and thickness. First job as a teen involved loading ground beef chubs and paper squares into the machine to keep the hopper feed full while it stamped out the days projected burgers to cook required. Never a doubt it could take your hand off if it went to far into the intake.
Is it? I live just outside of New York City and the first time I ever heard of dipping fries into a milkshake was on the Beasly's you tube channel (they are also British) and I was pretty disgusted. I have yet to see anyone here do that. Maybe it's a west coast or Midwest thing? I've never seen anyone actually do it.

@@LA_HA it’s a chain that started in Wisconsin. It has spread to surrounding states at this point. The main thing they are known for are the butter burgers. Next most popular thing is their custard and concrete mixers.
There are several chains that do this. We have Culver's, originating in the Wisconsin area. There's also Dairy Queen, which does the same thing but with softserve ice cream (the kind from McDonald's). In St. Louis we have two local chains (Mr. Freeze and Ted Drewe's), the latter only having two sites in the City of St Louis and being nationally known for their concretes.
You are right on the advertising. But behind the scenes it was to save space and to not waste it in fridge. They never froze their burgers, always fresh. Love Wendy's much better than Micky-Ds
Wendy's is actually one of the few restaurants that makes their nuggets out of actual breast meat instead of it being a mixture of breast and thigh meat and then extruded into nugget shapes. But that spicy chicken at Wendy's is 🔥

We (yes I work there) switched from hickory smoked (industry standard) to applewood bacon in 2009. I was wary of the change-until I tasted it. No comparison whatsoever. I started eating twenty pieces a day at one point.

I think they changed the recipe some years ago.. it used to be 1 dollar… they used to have the best chili and the heat packets would let you determine how spicy you wanted.. I used to put 3 in… but I haven’t seen that for the last several years..
The chili is still amazing. They cheated those boys not letting them have the chili. Where i live you can still get the family bucket of chili for like 10 something. Which is like equal to 5 or 6 large cups which run 3 something each. So a great deal

It's actually Blizzards that are famous for not dripping. They're at Dairy Queen, and it's a rule that they have to serve them to you upside-down. Frosties usually drip a lot in my experience. 😅 But their soft meltiness is what makes them so good for dipping fries into.
I just googled Wendy's UK and there's a 22 locations listed (granted only 1 location per town). Wendy's burgers are fresher, saltier, and cheese is melted!! Wayyy better than Mickey D's.
I figured they didn't have Wendy's there because Wendy's hamburgers are fresh, never frozen. So to get the proprietary meat patties there, then they would have to freeze them.

I used to work for Wendy's for years, I remember the refrigerated beef patties had an in-store self life of at least a week, probably much longer actually. True, I'm in Texas and we do that all the time, especially with What-a-burger, and their fries. Hell. I even put fries inside my What-a-catch fish sandwich. What-a-burger is Texas' most prolific burger chain. My favorite is the double-double; double meats. Double cheese slices, plus the fixin's. Still, IMO. The very best hamburgers. and hot dogs/chili-cheese dogs are the ones you make for yourself, and your family/friends at home, back-yard grill. Man, backyard cook-outs are the best times.
Lewis, Wendy's is a franchise just like Mc D's and KFC. Someone owns it you just have to pay franchise and start up fees and you can open one up and own it. Wendy's is I think the best of the nationwide fast food chains. Overall they tend to be fresher and more consistent in my experience. And something you might find interesting you can still get a junior cheeseburger (with the requisite lettuce, tomato, pickles and onions) and a four-piece nuggets, a small french fry and a small drink for four dollars! It's the made the same and with the same ingredients as the double cheeseburger in the video just smaller. Granted you can certainly spend more if you want but you don't have to if you're just grabbing a quick lunch. And I like that they offer a bit healthier options too like baked potatoes instead of only having french fries, their chili (as others have mentioned) and salads. I particularly like their apple pecan salad which comes with a whole grilled chicken breast cut up in it and blue cheese.
Having worked in a Wendy's before. They do their bacon in the oven. It isn't nuked the way McDonald's or Burger King do it. It makes for a crispier and better tasting bacon. They do the same with the baked potato. Yes, you can get a baked potato (plain or loaded) at Wendy's. The Frosty (I prefer the original, chocolate one) is amazing. I can't do it very often anymore, but it is a wonderful treat.
The bacon was microwaved when I worked there. The Baconator doesn't actually have 6 strips of bacon; when it came out, we had to start cutting the bacon in half before heating it up, so the Baconator actually only has 3 strips of bacon, whereas a Single add Bacon only had 1.5 strips of bacon.
Bro Wendys is straight-up the best fast-food chain. They're opening one across the street from me, so yay :) I didn't expect to look forward to fast food opening.
Dave actually did experimenting with the patty shape to see what cooks consistently evenly. If you find White castles they both came to the conclusion that square patties with strategically placed holes cooks completely evenly every time. It also cooks faster than other shapes.

Also, broccoli was the only item specifically for the baked potatoes (except for chive flakes, which are dirt cheap), while bacon, chili, liquid cheddar cheese and shredded cheddar cheese are served with so many other items, or even ordered separately, that they are much cheaper/can be fudged together with other food costs. Broccoli was a loss leader, so it was dropped, but only after decades.
And he was by no means the first to come up with the idea. For example, White Castle was making their sliders with square patties and square-ish buns long before the first Wendy’s opened.
@markhamstra1083 That's fair, but White Castle isn't nationwide. There aren't any in Texas. I did eat at White Castle when we went up north. I wasn't that impressed, but their sliders can't compete with Whataburger, which is better than Wendy's 😊 Of course, Whataburger isn't nationwide either. It's a Texas thing. Nothing beats a Whataburger (round patty). I'd take Wendy's over White Castle as well. It's all a matter of taste, and definitely regional taste 😊

About figuring out how to produce a consistent product quickly, cheaply and at scale. Efficiency is why White Castle burgers are square, and that is the same reason why Wendy’s patties are square.
@markhamstra1083 Again, that's fair. I completely respect your viewpoint. Their place in history is important as the first square patty, albeit a tiny one since it's a slider. White Castle did it first. For me, I can't say nostalgic because we don't have them in Texas. I didn't grow up with them, nor had I ever even heard about them until the Harold and Kumar movie came out. I think they built one in San Antonio, but it just couldn't compete with the burger chains we have in Texas. For you, they sound like they are very nostalgic, and I respect that. I'll say Wendy's then came and perfected the square patty, made it a meal sized burger, and put a quality stamp on it. Whataburger has been around longer than Wendy's, but they were just in deep South Texas (Corpus Christi and down in the valley). Once they expanded, they blew everyone out of the game. Wendy's is the only burger, in my humble opinion, that can rival Whataburger.
Yes, Wendy's is a franchise and you have to agree to a bunch of different rules and stuff in order to ensure brand quality and consistency, yada yada... but in return you get the brand name, probably supply chain support, business model and plan already laid out for you, etc. It takes money to make money though, so it's not cheap. And has to deal with local regulations.
In the States, fries can be covered with or dipped in: ketchup, gravy, cheese, mayonnaise, Ranch dressing, mustard, salsa, BBQ sauce, milk shakes, or anything else you like.
Yes Wendy’s serves real food which McDonald’s does not. (Most of the stuff they call food is fake food creations.) Chef Jamie Oliver just came out and proved that McDonald’s food is horrible.
In the 80s, when they became really popular, Wendy’s had a salad bar in every restaurant. They also were known for their taco salads that came in an edible tortilla bowl. They still have the best salads among fast food places, and it’s nice that they offer baked potatoes, too. They’re also known for their chili, but the Frosty is unique and really good. Also, you can buy a keychain tag during December every year, that gives you a free junior Frosty with a purchase of anything else, every visit for the following calendar year. Those tags only cost $3US.
Wendy's uses fresh ingredients, and the truck stop areas actually have breakfast options. Pro tip: If you are working in some sort of restaurant, always place some sort of towel in order to absorb moisture from the lettuce. It stays crispier. Oh, yeah. We have the frosty, which you dip your fries/chips into. BTW, please summon the chocolate option. You won't regret the taste.
So it is probably harder for them to open outside of the US, because one of the marketing campaigns is that their beef is fresh, never frozen, so it would have to be able to be sources in large quantities to be able to run franchises.
Fries dipped in a chocolate Frosty is an absolute MUST. You get piping hot crispy salty fries with the frozen sweet treat. It's the desert you never knew you needed. When you order at Wendy's that's what you have first, before the burger because you want those fries fresh and the frosty unmelted. The burger can wait, it's only okay. The chili is made with the burger patties that are left from the day before because their ground beef is "fresh, never frozen".

@@zeedeejay242nope, Midwest. Runza is located only in Nebraska, where it originated, plus Kansas, Colorado, Iowa and South Dakota. Culver’s originated in Wisconsin and has expanded into twenty six states, including Florida, but they definitely started out in the upper Midwest. Runza was really the confirmation though as it’s a uniquely Midwest food item.

If I remember correctly we’d stop at a little restaurant in Lincoln, this was in the sixties. They’re very similar to the meat pasties popular in Michigan, which is where I’m from originally.
Dipping fries into a milkshake was started by Wendy’s and the frosty. Btw a Frosty is a type of dessert in the US called a “Freeze” or a “Concrete”. It’s EXTREMELY thick frozen yogurt that’s served at a temperature right between frozen solid and milkshake consistency.
Dave also had the idea …using leftover hamburgers from last night’s business to make chili the next day…breaking up last nights hamburgers…adding all the ingredients for a terrific chili..and if you like …adding some chopped onions and shredded cheese…we get this every couple of weeks as well…great for cold days or stormy weather…just order and drive up and pick up…
My 7 year old son love all the fixings on his burgers too.He tells me to order his with all the salad on it. I have a recipe for a copycat Frosty. Take your favorite chocolate or strawberry milk( the richer the better) and pour it in an ice tray. Let it freeze totally. Place ice in a blender.Add a can of sweetened condensed milk, Blend then fold in an 8oz tub of Cool Whip( sweet whipped cream topping) Add a little chocolate milk if you need too but not alot because its supposed to be thick.Add a 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla extract(optional) Blend and enjoy.
The founder of Wendy's is Dave Thomas. He named the store after his daughter, Wendy's. She's still apart of the business as a franchisee in Ohio. I personally like Wendy's! The burgers are fresh, and never frozen! Their chili is the best fast food chili out there! Their fries rival McDonald's fries!
At Wendy's, for $5 you can get something called a $5 Biggie Bag. In this bag is a (smallish but with lettuce and tomato@) bacon (crisp!) cheeseburger, medium fries, four chicken nuggets with your choice of sauce, a 14 oz drink (google is your friend) including ice and five different kinds of Fanta! (I am partial to peach and or lime)
I live in Magee, Mississippi and we have 17 fast food restaurants to choose from, plus our local fast food shops and restaurants. They include: Wendy's, Burger King, McDonald's, KFC, Popeye's, Sonic, Dairy Queen, Pizza Hut, Little Ceasar's, Hardee's, Taco Bell, Zaxby's, Krystal, Rally's, Ward's, Subway, and McAlister's Deli. Plus we have Huddle and Waffle house, Atami's Japanese food, Jose's Mexican restaurant, China Buffet, Fernando's Fajita Factory, The Vault Eatery And Drinkery, and Newk's Magee. And the two local places, Zipp's Cafe and Becky's Burger, to get many different things. Yeah, we have options
Wendy's is its own thing. Its different than Burger King and McD's. I wouldn't want to eat just one all the time. When you do have the huge variety we have in the States you tend to eat around, and don't get burnt out one one place. Edit: Wendy's has great chili!
Fries dipped in Frosty is specifically well known in America. I even have memories of my sister taking me to Wendy's as a kid to have fries with frostys together. :P
As a kid growing up in Columbus Wendy's home , We would make a special trip downtown once a month or so when the very first one opened up . The one they showed at the start was the First . But within just a couple of years they were all over town. Dave Thomas was a great man in many ways. He was an orphan and did charity work his entire life for kids like himself.
I worked in a warehouse that shipped to Wendy's. The meat was never frozen and was shipped twice a week. If there were 500 cases there were exactly 2 extra cases. If more than 2 were damaged some orders were short. This was because they insisted on the freshest products. The patties are made in house not pre-made and shipped. The meat comes in 40 lb cases of solid meat, every other place we shipped to it was frozen pre formed patties. And I have a Wendy's about 3 minutes from me.

Dave sold the company …when I don’t know..maybe 1995…but remained as their commercial spokesperson on TV…and people loved him…he was just a natural …talking to the people at home…much like Colonel Harlan P Sanders over at KFC…naturally gifted salesman..
If you didn't know, before he started Wendy's, Dave was hired by KFC and is regarded as saving KFC from failure. He took his big KFC bucks and started Wendy's. Here in Columbus, Ohio, there are a lot of stories of Dave trying to get the local wealthy folks to invest in his burger place. A lot of people said no and are still sour about it to this day.
The whole fries being dipped in shake actually started with fries and Wendy's Frosties. Dave Thomas loved thick milkshakes so much that he developed one so thick it needed a spoon or fries to eat.
Dairy Queen Blizzards are the ones that are famous for being turned upside down not the Frostys. Frostys are thinner and I wouldn't chance turning them upside down. Having said that, dipping Wendy's fries in a chocolate frosty is amazing!
It makes the burger look bigger, Dave was a genius. He also invented the three stop drive though concept. order, pay, then get food which made it feel shorter. Same amount of time but keeps you busy while waiting.
Fast food/drive thru within 2 miles of where I live: 3 McDonald's, Cousins Subs, Jimmy Johns, Fazoli's, Slim Chickins, 3 Starbucks, Subway, 2 Arby's, 2 Culvers, 2 Tom's, 2 Taco Bell, Hardee's, 2 Burger King, Little Caesars, Panda Express, Popeyes, Chik-Fil-A, Freddy's, Schlotzky's, Qdoba, Noodles & Co, and there's a Kwik Trip on every corner that always has hot grab-and-go food. Definitely a convenience! I'm also within 2 miles of a Meijer, Festival Foods, Pick N Save, Woodmans, Walmart, and a mall with a full food court for everything else you could possibly need. I live in Wisconsin in a city of less than 100K people.
Fun fact Lewis, places like Wendy's will give minor league events coupons for a free frosty when players do something in the game. We went to a minor league baseball game last night and got 4 free frosty coupons per person because our team managed 4 home runs. My kids will run around the stadium for all the free food coupons all night. Arby's, Wendy's, free hair cut coupons, free taco bell, it's awesome! 😂
While everyone is correct about “we don’t cut corners,” it’s also much easier if working with fresh ground beef (as they used to do) to smash it all into a baking sheet, flatten with a press, then cut squares.
I'm sure the people have been dipping fries in milkshakes as long as there were fries and milkshakes, but I swear Wendy's popularized it. I don't know anyone that hasn't tried dipping fries in a frosty. I don't love it, but I definitely have a way I eat Wendy's. Bite of burger, drink of soda, eat a french fryer or two, bite of frosty. It's incredible and it pleases the pallet quite nicely. Also Wendy's used to use the regular garbage bacon that every other fast food restaurant used but several years back they wanted to upscale things. Now they use very good bacon especially compared to other fast food restaurants. Wendy's is King.
The fries dipped in the frosty thing is something that a lot of people do at Wendy's, since blind taste tests put Wendy's fries behind Burger King and MacDonald's fries for quite some time.

Our "issue" is the number of grocery stores. We've got 3 Publix, 4 Kroger, 3 Walmart - within a mile of my house. Glad I learned to cook at home in the early 1990s. Oh, that doesn't count an enormous Farmer's Market for odd veg or the freshest meat. So, yes, some fast food places are near us, but to me it's more fun to try out the different grocery stores for interesting ingredients.
Wendy's HQ posted that soon they will be opening between 300-400 stores in the UK. At Wendy's you control the condiments, you can have any condiments added or left off.
Definitely dip fries in milkshakes! My favorite is to dip fries in a Dairy Queen cookie dough blizzard. That's the best. And the upside down thing really isn't a Frosty thing. It's a Dairy Queen Blizzard thing. They actually turn it upside down before handing it to you.

In the town I live in (Jefferson City) there is: Burger King, KFC, McDonald's, Dominos, Chipotle, Wendy's, Dairy Queen, Freddie's Frozen Custard, Firehouse Subs, Jimmy John's, Arby's, Buffalo Wild Wings, Chick-fil-A, Longhorn Steakhouse, Texas Roadhouse, and these are ALL on ONE main street in town ( not to mention many more chain restaurants that are scattered throughout the town!) 😁
Within 4 minutes of my house (within about 6 km - minutes away from home), we have Sonic, Taco Bell, KFC, Popeyes, 3 McDonald's, 2 Burger Kings, 2 Wendy's, Chic-Fil-A, Arbys, A&W, 2 Subways, Long John Silvers, Dairy Queen, Five Guys, Jersey Mike's Hoagies, Pizza Hut, Domino's, 6 Dunkin' Dunuts, and 4 Starbucks. Plus, we have so many family owned amazing restaurants. I know how much you are looking forward to our fast food, because it's 'normal' for us. We drive by on our way home from work and cook dinner. It's cheaper and healthier. I will get an iced coffee at Dunkin occasionally. Because I care about my heart and don't want to die early, I couldn't tell you the last time I was in any fast food restaurant, even though I'm surrounded by them. They are also very expensive. Just an iced coffee price went up almost $5.00 in the last five years. It's very, very expensive. We would rather go out to a family owned restaurant (where the food is homemade and you are supporting a family) than a fast food chain. Off topic, French fries dipped in a milkshake, the best is a Wendy's chocolate Frosty, is great! Occasionally, I will cheat on and run to Wendy's for small fries and a small chocolate Frosty! 🍟 🥛
Wendys have so many more items. The salads are excellent, probably the best in terms of fast food restaurants. They have excellent chili. They have baked potatoes, the only fast food restaurant to serve them. They are really good topped with chili and cheese. In the US they have flavored lemonades, they used to have a watermelon flavored one but now I usually get the Pineapple Mango flavor. The chocolate frosty is the mainstay, they have seasonal flavors such as vanilla, strawberry, peppermint in December, Pumpkin spice in Oct/Nov.
The spicy chicken is the BEST. Chrispy outside, juicy inside. You can special order sauces, lettuce, tomato, pickle, mayo, onion etcon the sandwich. I'm not a hamburger person (chicken or hotdog), but when I want a hamburger I go to Wendy's . Its fresh off the grill, tasty, many condiments of choice no extra charge. Only sauces extra. I love their chili and baked potatoes and FROSTYS. Prices reasonable. No tipping at any fast food. Free refills there and then can take another out. Water is always free. In my small town ( 20 miles from Wendy's World headquarters in Columbus, Ohio) we have 2 Wendys. Check out history of Dave Thomas and Wendys. He was a great man who gave back to the world that helped him succeed. His daughter's name was Wendy.
I've had bacon on fast food in London before and it's what . . boiled? Yuck! Here it's fried, so it's all crispy and delicious. You have to try Wendy's. They do it right! But, I only eat there about 4x a year.
Dairy products are fantastic for counteracting spicy foods, because the milk absorbs the spicy oil, while water will avoid the oil and leave it on the tongue.
Wendy's is great. Love me the spicy chicken sandwich, but add bacon. The founder was a pretty good guy too. Edit: What they mean by in-between is that it's essentially an extremely thick shake. You usually need to start with a spoon, but as it warms a little you can start using a straw.
