You will love this: A couple of years ago a Russian fighter plane breached the air space. It was identified by a Finnish fighter in one minute. A reporter asked the defence forces "how can you possibly be there in one minute when your nearest airfield is 20 minutes away?" And here comes the epic response: "Exactly." Ok the reporter wasn't satisfied with that and asked the Minister of Defence the same question and the answer: "Our planes are where they need to be at the right time".😅

The reporter may not have understood, obviously they can't break the laws of physics. But with early detection systems and good surveillance, they can have a fighter in the air long before it reaches the border to meet up. Sweden does this all the time too. The Russians like to test our detection abilities. It's like a game they play. "How fast are the Swedes?" "How fast are the Finns?" etc.

As a Swede. Finland's military is what Sweden's could have been if we didn't stop conscription. Although it has been reintroduced and we are slowly building up again. Funny how Finland's military as a smaller country is larger than that of Sweden which is double the size in population. It's not only negative for Sweden though, our technology and equipment is world class and our soliders (just like the Finns) are extremely well trained relative to other nations. Finland is our brother and I look forward to finally explicitly allying up with our Nordic neighbours and NATO.

@@kessu1863 Absolutely, Sweden brings the Air Force, Navy, Air Defense, submarines and tech - Finland brings the raw artillery and boots on the ground numbers, and we got ourselves a legendary combo for fending off an attack from the east and securing the Baltic Sea. Both militaries have trained specifically for the eastern enemy and equipment is designed specifically for our nordic climate and fighting doctrine. And once Sweden works up a larger pool of trained conscripts, the alliance grows even stronger. It’s looking good for the future. A strong military is a pillar that society stands on. We don’t want war, that would be horrendous, but we’ve gotta have the capability to destroy a potential invasion.

I am a Finnish woman, who did not take part in voluntary conscription when I was young, but I voluntarily attended courses about civil defense, crisis management, first aid, handling weapons, cybersecurity and leadership which have helped me understand what I might face in a situation of a crisis and what my capabilities and my probable position in a crisis situation might be. And I am not alone. So I have a pretty good hunch what the attitude of this nation of soldiers would be to an attack. There are only 5 million of us, but we are all warriors.

We are the 2 largest army in NATO. 280,000 very well-trained soldiers immediately ready for war, and our reserve also has 900,000 top-trained soldiers. Europe's MOST ACCURATE and biggest artillery, etc. We don't market these military capability things because there is no need for it!

@@SolidoNaso. So called defence force consists of army, navy and airforce. Change happened when we joined JEF and gained ability to operate anywhere in the world. Sometimes defending requires operating on enemy soil, as in fighting terrorism for example.

"Sisu" is the national characteristic associated with Finnish people. There is no direct translation, but it basically means an inner determination despite any difficulties and hardships one might encounter. You get the job done no matter what.

Sisu: imagine that your field of potatoes frose up, the horse that should pull your plough (to turn the rows) died and your shovel broke down… Finn says ”vittusaatanaperkele” and starts to dig with hands.

Well, Finland has the concept of total defence. There is a lot of infrastricture built for war. Bomb sheltets ( usually known as parking garages or underground sport facilities, for over 4 million people). Some storages for water, fuel,medicine, and a lot of other stuff for several months. Mostimportant companies regulary meet with fdf to discuss "what if" scennarios in energy supply, telecom etc. in order to make up plans on how to minimaze damage and recover in these situations. Even the road and railway network, location of windmills, ways roads are constructed, are all a part of defence. If war break out, tanks won't pass the "hitpoints". There is a lot of preparation done since 1939, and with most men you meet on the street being trained solders, it will cost a lot to concuer Finland, even without Nato. With enough solders, we however would at some point eventually run out of ammunition and other stuff. In ww2 soviet union lost about 20 millon people...still they pushed to Berlin. For a small nation like Finland, Russia still has enough people to die, that they could just push by the numbers. Really costly way with no real gain, but it wouldn't be the first time for them to try.

Pretty much every 5 guy is a soldier. Another million to take care of the country in non-military duties during a crisis. Whole country is made for this.

We’re seeing this in Ukraine too. Defending your own soil does wonders for motivation, as opposed to attacking someone else - while not really knowing why you’re doing it…

NATO fighters have been training in Finland with Finnish airforce about 15 years before we became full members due the NATO partnership program.

Talking about the amount of troops: Finland has roughly as many troops, including the reserves in all these countries, as Italy, France, the UK and Germany combined.

Finland was for a long time threatened with complications by Russia, had we decided to apply for a NATO membership earlier (it simply wasn't an option or we would very likely have faced what Ukraine is facing now) Therefore when Putin decided to go for Ukraine instead, it was our only chance to apply for membership in NATO in peace and without immediate complications from the east.

As a Finn, I can verify of Finland posessing missiles. Me and my family were docking to Naantali port one time from a small sailing trip, and were greeted by the Finnish Coastal Defense Brigade, who had set up barracks and a SAM-system there for the annual military training. Wild stuff to see a battalion sized unit with live, loaded ammo on civilian locations.

in addition when the winter war started, we had only ONE ( 1 ) battle ready tank and it was already outdated old renault tank lol. meanwhile soviets had over 3000 if i dont remember wrong, maybe even more.

No. It wasnt. In the Winter War after the first week of fighting, the Soviets propped up a collaboration government in Terijoki which signed an agreement with the Soviets to come help them and create a new government Finland. They did it also that their invasion wouldve had more justification than the Shelling of Mainila which seems to be a big goddamn mystery to the Russians to this day when asked. As for the shelling of Mainila, Finland of course said that their artillery wasn't even close to that region and agreed for the LoN to send observers and detectives but the Soviets never agreed or let the LoN go to Mainila to study the shelling. Also before the winter war the Soviets and the Germans signed a non-aggression pact which also came with spheres of "influence". Soviets had spheres of "influence" in Bessarabia, Eastern Poland, the Baltics and Finland. Everyone else folded to those demand and were occupied or they were conquered. Finland did not fold or get conquered. And for that matter after the Winter War the Soviets also asked the Germans for their permission to try to conquer Finland once again as the NAP still held power and the ideas of spheres of "influence" but they refused as Finland already was planning their part in Op. Barbarossa. So infact it was the Winter War in which Finland won its independence. But yeah sure Finland won its independence again after the continuation war with even lesser territorial concessions than in the Winter war, losing only Petsamo and a small area next to Petsamo which had a dam to power the Nickel mines in Petsamo.@@sundflux

Well the core of finnish defence is the ground forces, which has heavy capabilities in fighting in deep woods, and that is due to the jaeger infantry, who are specialized in fighting in that kind of terrain. Kind of like guerilla warfare, where the troops do small skirmishes and bit by bit weaken the enemy, but we do have actual guerrilla fighters who then specialize in sabotage and intelligence gathering.

Sisu means guts, determination and persistence. If you were to do something difficult and dangerous with sisu, you'd set your mind on getting it done, you'd figure out how to actually do it rather than just throw yourself at it and hope for the best, and you'd see it through no matter how much you have to bend to get it done or how many times you fail before succeeding.

Shortly put: it CANNOT be translated. You literally have to be born as a Finn and you have it. I have lived outside of FIN for as long as I lived in there and it does not exist outside of FIN. Americans are close, though. It's more like don't poke them, be polite, and stay out of the inner workings of the USA. So, close... 😉

To me as a Finland's native man of some life experience, Sisu means the kind of thing going through you when you get badly beaten with knives and hammers maybe, usually fall down and start drifting towards unconsciousness, fainting. But then, before you faint, you snap out of it and become like a bear spirit in springtime, who just was awaken before he should had. Very primal thing inside of you, enabling you to still stand up with single.minded determination and respond. That, to me, is Sisu.

In addition to the Defense Forces, we have the National Defence Training Association of Finland (Maanpuolustuskoulutusyhdistys). It arranges courses anybody can take. Basically preparing people for support tasks on the home front. I was already too old and physically broken when women got the chance to get military training, so I took some of those courses at the end of 1990s.

At 11:10 MHC Vahterpää (42) is a mine hunter, identical with the MHC Katanpää (40) onboard which my daughter joined the NATO Baltic operations excercise last summer. A rare chance for a volunteer conscript to sail as far as Germany and be part of the operations of an international fleet. Asked in 2022 that surely she is not going to volunteer now that Russia has started a war in Europe, she replied that if she was not sure before, now she is. It should also be understood that women can volunteer and they can cancel the deal during the first month of conscription, if they feel they have made the wrong choice. But after that first month it becomes compulsory and they are like all the rest; must complete their training, become part of the reserve after the training and can be called at arms or additional training at any time until they turn 50, officers and NCOs until they turn 60.

Interesting fact: Finland and Great Britain has officially been at war with each other. But just on paper as far as I know. This due to Finland used the Germans to help with the Russia issue during WW2. Talk about getting stuck between a rock and a hard place...

I think it's fair to say, if we get into nuclear war that would be really pretty much the end of civilization (at least for decades). With conventional weapons, neither Russia nor China (not even combined) could stand against NATO (combined GDP of all NATO members 30 trillion vs. Russia 2 Trillion USD or something). Problem for Ukraine right now is, that the West doesn't get its butt out of the couch. If NATO would give Ukraine "everything they have asked for for last 18 months", I believe Russia would be kicked out of Ukraine within 6-12 months. But right now they are fighting with one hand tied behind their back and the other in a boxing glove... But if Russia were to be about totally defeated (NATO troops nearing Moscow), it is well plausible that Russia in that case would use nuclear weapons - as they have said: "what good would be a world without Russia in it?".

FYI FINLAND/SWEDEN has in history TOGETHER fought 32 wars against Russia ! Finland has 2 extra wars againstRussia. So we both know Ivan by hart. And the Finns has SISU. You want any one with SISU on you team any time.! A BadAss is soft in comparison.

In the military in Finland one of the first thing we learn is to walk in formation. Might not mean much and i assume alot of finns doesnt even get the point and some might understand it when they grew older.

Others.. Russia, They don't think the same way as we do in Europe including Finland. We do know some of that. From history. We don't want war and that's why we want the best weapons. They say that the best weapons are them you never don't have to use. And if you want peace, prepare for war. Othervice - my hat for you - You have done your duty by working in hospital

Nato includes the US, which is the biggest military spender on the entire planet so yeah we do have a lot of manpower and resources, a quick google search puts the total number of active military personel in all of Nato at about 3,3 million, compaired to 1,3 in Russia, China has about 2 million so if they were to unite with Russia it would be about equal in terms of manpower. But I don't think anyone matches Nato and especially the US in terms of technology, given that the US spends more on it's military than the next 26 biggest military spenders combined, 25 of which are it's allies

As a finn I can say we are grazy and ready to die for our nation this means SISU. You give your everything. We have bunkers for the whole nation with beds, water etc. We just don’t trust our neighbour.

I hate how they put that ”sisu” everywhere. It’s a word that means nothing in practice. Just some flourish to pretend we have some features that others don’t.
