There's a fair few English and Scottish themed pubs as well, probably Welsh as well. And there are bars that are very much pubs, rather than sports bars, hookup places (of course that happens anywhere), dance/disco places,etc.

As much as I love our country- we lack one thing I appreciated about the places I visited in Europe and the UK- Historical/multiple centuries old architecture and places.... We do obviously have a lot of historically significant things in the US, but I'm talking about places or buildings built in like the 14th,15th or 16th centuries. Just something I found I wished we had here.

The US is a nation of immigrants. And many of the people that moved here brought their cultures with them. So there are bits of the entire world here. Irish, Polish, German, French Russian, Chinese, the various African and South American nations. Pretty much you name it and if there's a population of a group here, you will find markets, restaurants, bars/pubs, clubs and so on. People brought their cultures with them.

Keep in mind 31.5 million Americans claim Irish ancestry, seven times the population of Ireland itself. While the connection is often superficial, it's equally often that it's reflected in their day to day culture. For many Americans of migrant heritage, the "motherland" is at least as important as is a favorite sports team. Thus, you need a pub, birreria, la barra, brasserie, buschenschank, Schenke, gospoda, etc. All are welcome, step into the light.

An easy way to see this effect at home is to pour a glass of hot water direct from the tap and water it go from cloudy to clear. That's not impurities (unless there's something really wrong with your pipes), it's just bubbles because the water is pressurized. Different gas, but same effect and easier for non-Guinness drinkers to do.
@SubFT
@SubFT 4 месяца назад
It's really not that different from any other beer. While most lagers might end up a golden color, the head itself is largely pretty white. Obviously for Guinness it's head is more brownish, probably because it is a dark beer, but it's still much lighter than the beer color itself.

Yes, we have British and Irish pubs. In a lot of ways, our small taverns, saloons, or hole in the wall bars are basically American versions of pubs. Of course, our sports bars are what most foreigners think of when they think of American bars. I think what would be equivalent for the US would be what is called a bar and grille. It’s basically a restaurant with a large bar area. Some parts of the country either used to be dry, meaning no alcohol served, or did not serve hard liquor, meaning only wine & beer are served. So bar and grilles allow for having a bar but also giving the establishment a cover of responsibility with the restaurant attached.

My favorite Irish pub here in Texas (though not many to choose from) is a place called Casey's. Owned by one of the most lovable foul mouthed woman you will probably ever meet. They pay the extra cost to get the true Guinness from Ireland (not Canadian Guinness) and the Shepherd's Pie is life changing. One other thing that's cool is we all tip, but it's not for her, Orla (the owner)'s gain. It's to fund a trip to Ireland for all of us regulars every couple of years.

In the first pub, Celtic Crossing, when you pour a Guiness, you only fill half way, at an angle, then let it breath for a minute, then top back off again, then it will appear as a perfectly poured stout. Also, a good chunk of America, especially the east coast, was built on the backs of the Irish, so of course we have a strong Irish culture on the east coast.

The color change is common in a lot of drinks. It's the bubbles which make the color seem lighter. Like if you look at Coke when it foams up looks rather brown instead of the usually dark black/brown it normally is. The issue is how fast it settles. The beer settles slower so their is more time to notice the color change while most carbonated drinks settle fairly quickly.

We definitely have a bunch of Irish pubs here in the US. I used to be an Irish dancer in the mid/late 2000's, and the school I belonged to used to dance monthly at a Pub in Atlantic Beach, FL. Culhanes which actually appeared in an episode of Diners, Drive Ins and Dives the Guy Fieri show. They were very nice people, and always we got a great response from the patrons of the pub. I was in my late 20's but some of the dancers were as young as 10, and still were welcome to perform. I think the 4 sisters spread their brand to a few more locations. After I retired from dance, I heard my old school also performed at a pub called Houligans as well and that was up at the north end of St. Augustine I believe.

It takes about a month to make a good home brewed beer. In our Home state of South Carolina were allowed to home brew up to 100 gallons in a year for ourselves. If the residence has 2 adults 21 years of age or older, then 200 gallons a year is allowed. That equates to 12,800 fl ounces, up to 25,600 fl ounces, if divided into 12 oz servings it equates to 2,133 beers, or about 177 12 packs, or 88 24 packs. However hard spirits are not allowed, the odd thing is beer can be brewed to a high content of alcohol such as 80 proof.

Then they would tell you that everything that you ever heard is wrong, and they will inform you correctly about things. I'm jesting, because he also wrote the novel 1984, although I suspect that some people today that that it's a textbook, because of things going on.

I love that they have a Notre Dame jersey in Celtic Crossing. ND is only about 90 min east of Chicago in South Bend, Indiana; home of The Fighting Irish. I'm about 2 miles from campus and we have a few Irish pubs here in town. One of the most famous is called Corby's. It's featured in the movie Rudy.

340,000,000 people from all over the world live in America. We have anything any other country has, you just might have to go to different areas for specific things. But pubs, asian food, Italian, and Mexican/South American food are everywhere. And its brown when airated and black when settled.

I’m from Temecula. I live in Murrieta now but Temecula has the Shamrock, which is an Irish pub and then Killarney, which is also an Irish pub and decor is amazing. We go probably a couple times a month. It’s so good and it’s so fun.

In my city, we call these pubs, taverns and bars. There is a wide range of sizes and fanciness. The tavern tends to be neighborhood associated and often the patrons have lived in the neighborhood forever. In the southwest you might find cantinas. Americans LOVE alcohol beverages.

Loved this episode. My Grandfather on my moms side was Irish. My mom is half Irish and Half Polish which means she was probably from Chicago. LOL. Well yes she was from Chicago, which made this episode so much more cooler to me. I don't even drink. But that last place is a place I want to visit on my next trip back to Chicago.

And Guiness is a rather magical beer in the way it separates like it does. If you buy Guiness in a can, it has a special little widgit thingy in it that stirs up the beer properly inside the can. This is from the interwebs about it: "The widget, a small, nitrogen-filled plastic sphere or capsule, is a distinctive feature found in cans of Guinness stout. It was introduced in 1968 as a solution to replicate the creamy texture and cascading effect of Guinness poured from a tap."

There’s a really good English Pub in Portland, Maine it’s called Gritty McDuffs. They have a stout called Black Fly Stout, but in October they have a Halloween Ale that I love and they are on tap. They brew them onsite and you can go down stairs ancheck them out. They serve homemade crisps and different English foods. I most times go for the ales but sometimes I get the crisps and some of the food like shepherds pie too. The place is always packed and it’s a great place to sit near the windows and people watch.

I live in the DC area and a lot (not all) Irish pubs recruit bartenders/waitstaff from Ireland. I even know a guy who's parents met due to one of theses programs. But yeah you can find Irish, English, Scottish, and Welsh pubs (though the last 2 are a bit harder to find).

I worked in a pub/bar/restaurant in college. Had over a dozen beers on tap, and a gajillion in bottles. Our area is known for microbreweries. Our town was just named "Best Small Town Beer Scene" in the US. I'll try to find a pic of the inside of the pub I worked at, so you can see another American pub.

A pub and bar is the same thing, a drinking establishment . In America we used to call use the term pub or tavern. Over time we just starting calling them bars, which refers to the countertops where most the action happens. When you see a place called a “pub” nowadays, it’s simply indicating the decor and theme.

Haha, as a chemist, your reaction to the chemistry segment was hilarious. I'd also like to add that a dirty glass or any grease or oil in the glass will cause the smaller bubbles to combine into larger bubbles, which isn't a good sign for that particular location...

I frequent a place called The Horse Brass Pub in Portland, Oregon. Brideies, Scotch Eggs, Fish & Chips, various meat pies and a traditional English Breakfast every Sunday. The whole menu is authentic British pub fare. Guinness, Bass and ciders on tap, as well as half a dozen hand pulled 'real ales' and about 50 local brews on tap. Many British ex-pats frequent the place. I even bartended there for a while.

I’m American Irish (3rd generation from county Mayo) and I’m proud to say that America loves the Irish culture! We do have good Guinness but I’ve been to Ireland and I’ve been to the original Guinness brewery and it’s the best I’ve ever had. (I’m very proud of my Irish heritage) but we do love the pubs here too! ❤ EDIT: Guinness is my favorite beer and when you pour it, it’s always so creamy. It’s the creamy fluff that you saw when they were pouring. It’s just the bubbles and they rise to the top and then you see the dark color after. The biggest difference between the Guinness here vs. Ireland is the importing. Importing it changes it slightly, but it’s still the best beer in the country. IMO

Been to Brehon and loved it, but I wasn't drinking Guiness. It was a hangout after work for folks working 17:04 around there, often dinner and drinks with friends. The most authentic pub in Chicago was the Abbey, but I think it's closed... sad. Brehon wasn't as much of a neighborhood pub. More for work lunch, after work or meet up before games.

The initial pour of Guinness is always brown because of all the tiny bubbles refracting the light. Those eventually settle at the top, forming the head and leaving the rest of the glass that familiar inscrutable black.

There was a Guinness store next to the Irish pub at the Mandalay Bay in Vegas. I got a Guinness there. They took my picture and put it on top of the foam on my Guinness. It was crazy looking at my face getting smaller to the end of my drink lol.Yes Guinness is a deep brown color. Love a pint of Guinness.

When I worked in midtown in NYC, there was a lovely Irish pub on Third Ave. that I often went to for lunch - they had a pretty extensive menu of real food at really decent prices. Lunch tends to be my biggest meal of the day and being able to go there and get sandwiches, meatloaf and mashed potatoes, corned beef and cabbage, mac and cheese with roast beef... along with a grill for burgers, etc., it went on and on. Great food, great prices and down-to-earth, friendly folks. I miss that place.

Yep, even my small area has a Pub. Oddly enough it mixes nationalities. 🤣 It's considered an "English" pub but all the servers wear kilts! The food is good, but also happens to be the cuisines of England, Scotland & Ireland. For example, bangers & mash or a nice Shepard's pie, etc. We go there to eat sometimes and also like to sit on their patio on a nice warm Spring day with a Pimm's cup. 😉
