We also have something in the US called a "family reunion" which is just an excuse to bring entire extended families together to eat, talk, play games, etc. I don't know about other people, but the family reunions on both sides of my family usually averaged about 50-75 people, minimum (grand parents, great-grands, several levels of cousin, everyone who married in, even some of the in-laws, a few times.)

Yeah, my grandfather by my mom came from a family of 20 children and our family reunions would be wild back when I was young. We would have well over 250 or more and it would last from very early in the morning till late at night and most of the family would hang around for at least a few days.

We lived in a 3 generation household with a granny pod in back for my very ill mother. Care homes are so expensive. My mom would’ve lost all her savings and she saved a lot. The big gift, tho, was our family helping each other, getting to know grandma better and she passed away with all of us there, peacefully. Very blessed. My sons stayed because college was so costly (law school/bar exam). Now? They take care of me, God love em. So I know my granddaughter! It works for us and how it was done decades ago. 😀♥️

When I was a child, my grandmother became unable to care for herself. She joined our household in a simple matter of course. It felt natural. The same type of circumstance arose years later when my father became elderly and unwell. We brought him into our household so he would have a safe and healthy home.

I think most of the multigenerational households are families that have a grandparent/or parents move in when they are elderly because it gets too difficult for them to live alone.

Ya, he isn’t saying it like an American Mahhhm. Ah, like “ah, I see”. And the Brit didn’t pronounce Mawmaw (Mamaw) or Pawpaw/Papaw (regional variations) correctly, either. But that’s expected with his accent, so he gets a pass. Mama, papa can be anywhere in the US, pawpaw and mawmaw, definitely Southern. All Southern.

My Grandparents had 4 children and 4 spouses, 9 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren. They lived to see 2 Great-great Grandkids. We didn't all live in the same house but we all lived within 2 miles from my grandparents. We were always together until after my grandparent's death. Some of us started going in different directions. I married a military man so I moved the furthest away from home. Being away from family was difficult, especially during a holiday. We celebrate a little bigger in the US than in Europe. I lived in Germany for 3 years and was able to travel across Europe through the Armed Services rather inexpensively, including the UK. We don't have the pageantry or formality as you do but Americans do know how to throw a good party. We will use what ever excuse we can to throw a party.

True story. We were at my mother-in-law's house for Thanksgiving dinner and there were about 30 people there. There was a man sitting in the chair in the living room no one seemed to know. The funny thing was there were so many people in the house no one even noticed him for a good while.

I went to school in California and was in kindergarten in 74-75'. We didn't have a graduation for that, but we did at the end of all the others. Unlike the majority of the of the country, elementary here went through 6th grade. Then Jr. High was 7th through 9th and High School was 10th through 12th (it's since changed). It wasn't until I went to "Middle School" in Indiana for a year that I discovered how unusual that was.

Literally walked in and out as kids to whoever’s you wanted to play with. 11 cousins and 10 adults. Had a birthday party every month at someone’s house. Whoever had a birthday within a week of the party was on the cake and got presents. One phone call and 10-15 would head to local lake and BBQ burgers and hotdogs while some were fishing etc. Most went to the same church, so social life was family and church. Very comfortable life

Pep rallys were pretty cool! They are year round (not in summer obviously) depending on what school sports team the pep rally is for! You go to the gym (depending on the size of the school the gym can seat a few, or about a thousand or more, people) and the marching band and color guard, the dance team and the cheerleaders will all perform!! Then they bring out the specific team you are cheering on for their big game. Most often, the pep rally is for the football and basketball teams (football in the fall semester and basketball in the spring semester) but if the volleyball, track, baseball, etc teams make it to a championship, then they get one. But the BEST part is you get out of one or two classes to attend them!!

Hawaii has 15.7% multi-generational households due to it being a cultural norm among native Hawaiians and the cost of living. In California it's 12.3 due to costs. It is common to have reunions where upwards of a few hundred family members will convene once a year.

When my husband and I bought our house, we made sure it had enough land to build an addition. Growing up, my grandparents lived with me 6 months out of the year. They spent winters down south with us and summers back up north. I more than anything want my parents to eventually move in with me and my family. Some of my best memories are spending quality time with my grandparents. They had their own space, sort of like a 1 bedroom apartment with in the main house. It was the best.

My mom was so sick of having to help make tortillas daily she jokes, that she vowed to only have three children.😆 Christmases were AWESOME for me growing up! My mom and 7 aunts made a Tamale assembly line! One of my “bigger” uncles would dress up as Santa and pass out candy before we all went to Midnight Mass. Our Godmothers/Godfathers would give a gift to there godchildren and there were always extras little gifts or candy bags for the extra attendees of our celebration. My nephew lived here until he graduated high school, and he still has a room here. He comes every 10 days or so to visit his dad and friends in the area and spend the night. My sister lived here as well till 2 years ago when she remarried, and she still has a room in the house still and won't give it up. She's here about every 10 days, and she stays for two nights. The family's decision for multi-generational living is usually based on choosing not to send their parent(s) into a Senior Living facility, where they may feel defeated and shut down In the US, many new home builds generally include what is referred to as a "Mother-in-law" suite (apartment), which is usually located downstairs in the basement. It has a bedroom, ensuite/bathroom, kitchenette, double washer-dryer (located behind closed doors), and of course, an open living space with a sofa and a mounted TV. The grandparents would have access to the family's main living quarters, yet they would have privacy in their own space as well.

Multigenerational is fairly common around here. Growing up my maternal grandparents had my uncle (who was mentally handicapped) and my great grandmother and great-great uncle living with them. For a few months while my dad was on deployment and before our new house was ready my mother moved us in with them, too. So for a while there were 5 generations in one house! My wife's grandmother and great aunt live with her mom. So she grew up with three generations throughout most of her childhood. A few years ago when my wife and I built our dream home we went with a separate guest house rather than a "mother-in-law suite" as the cost wasn't all that much more. With our youngest now about to turn 7 there's a chance we might find ourselves with another generation doing more than just visiting, even if it is across the yard.

I grew up in the 1950s. Everyone called their parents, mom, and dad. Mommy or Mama and Daddy were used by younger children. When we moved to a new neighborhood in 1960, all of the parents were called by their 1st name, no matter how young the child was. Afterward, it was an interchangeable combination of old man, old lady, mom, ma, dad, Bob or Jeanne.

I grew up in the late 50s to early 70s. "Old man" and "old lady" were seen as terms from the beat generation or 60s hippies, and the speaker was trying to be cool rather than respectful. I have seen a few (VERY few) families where parents were called by their first names, but if my Dad ever caught one of us calling our own or a friend's parents (or any adult, for that matter) by their first names I can assure you it would never happen again. Adults were called Miss, Mrs., Mr. or professional title such as Dr., Pastor or Coach out of respect, but never by only a first name.

Yankee Swap is what we call it in New England. There's also the White Elephant where you don't open until the end and what you got, you got. How it's done in a little more detail: * A max spend is decided upon before Christmas. Our house is $20. You wrap it, sometimes using trickery like a brick inside for weight or use a large box. Family rule is no scratch tickets or alcohol (which is ironic giving my siblings' teenage pasts). * A slip of paper with a number on it for each of the gift-bringing participants. We'll say 15 people, numbered from 1 to 15. Each person draws a number and that decides the picking order. * There are two ways to play. Blind pick (White Elephant) as previously skimmed over or opened pick (Yankee Swap). We do opened pick in our household (1 parent (RIP Mom) and my 5 siblings plus their significant other, older nieces/nephews) * #1 is the best number to get other than the last number which gives full view of all the gifts to pick from... but #1 can still take. Anyway: * #1 person picks a gift and opens it. #2 picks and opens a gift. They can swap with #1 or keep/hold onto it. #3 goes and they can keep or swap with #2 or #1 this goes on up to the max number (say... 15 for example). Obviously the higher the number, the more you can see to choose from. The more people, the more stress if you really want to keep the gift in your hands as it progresses. * Once the last person opens and makes their swap selection person #1, who at that point can see all the gifts, can make their swap since they weren't able to initially. It goes up from 1-15 then immediately to #1 person. It doesn't go back down numerically. Just up to the max number and straight to #1 and done. * Everyone gets a laugh or storms out of the house. It's all in fun. Beats buying gifts for 5 siblings, their spouses and nieces/nephews, great nieces/nephews, etc. We used to do name swaps... but being siblings being siblings it really caused derision and division. Siblings can be brutal to each other. :) All the children under 18 are to be given proper gifts directly and thoughtfully... but 18+ can participate in the Yankee Swap.

High school graduation parties are a thing, college graduation parties are going out to Applebees with your parents after the ceremony.

For me, I only have one sibling, but I have 4 kids. Mum lived with me & my kids for quite abit of their lives. We were taught at a young age to respect our parents, & well, they took care of us, so we end up taking care of them, tho my Mum was younger, at the time, & still worked, it actually worked out quite lovely.

Never heard of pass the parcel. As kids we would do names at Christmas, we would put all the kids names in a hat, and cousins, and draw one out, then you have to buy them a present, with a $20 limit on the present. We get a celebration after we graduate grade school, and high school. Some of us even got a car for graduating high school. My Father bought me a 1970 Dodge Challenger as a graduation present for high school. It was bad ass, I used to race people and it was so fast I almost never lost a race in it. High School football is also big in America, the local news channels even send a camera crew to film a little of the game to show on the news that night as highlights while they report the scores.

That is that way here at times. Granny or both granny's we take off! It is fun and you learn about the way they had to grow up to help each. They help cook, clean etc.

That “pops” is according to household 😂. My brother calls our dad “pop” and “dad” while my sister and I just call him “dad”.

I graduated high school 26 years ago. For homecoming week, the alumni of my high school still goes to the homecoming football game. And we have annual reunion picnics. We'll make a party (get together) out of anything!! LOL

I could give you a rundown on so many of our phrases because I have lived in the Midwest and the upper south and the lower south my entire life so Kansas, Missouri, and Arkansas. I can tell you all kinds of stuff about America that would blow your mind we did a lot of traditions when we left Britain and then made them into our own when we got to America.

My family throws a party once a year on the second Saturday of November and everyone who can, shows up. There can be 100 people or more people in the local church community building. We are all related in some way, if only by marriage. We call it Family Fun Night. We have a potluck and bring a dish and some wrapped gifts that we all trade around by turn in a large circle as a mystery gift. You can keep your gift or trade it for anyone else's gift you might like better. All in good fun, joke gifts and all. My Grandmother had 5 children and we are all descendants in some way. It's huge.

My mom has 3 sister, a brother, a step sister, and 4 step brothers. I have 2 sisters, 10 bio cousins and 7 step siblings …. Just on my mom’s side. From my cousins there are 10 great grandkids so far. The majority of us live in Pennsylvania, but my grandparents South Carolina, so at least once a year, they young will travel south on Friday. On average, it’s about 10-12 hour drive with stops. We’ll have a family dinner Saturday and drive home on Sunday. Been doing it for decades!

My American mom is one of 14 siblings, each is married & has on average 4 kids most of whom are also married with an average of 4 kids, about half of whom are married with 2 or more kids. We're a close-knit family & before the pandemic we celebrated together frequently. A gathering of 100 (when not everyone could attend) was considered a small event.

When we have multi-generational homes, usually it is with what we call an "in-law apartment". Many of our homes have them. It is a separate apartment in the house for grandparents to live, so the live in the house, but they have their own space (bedrooms, living area, bathrooms and kitchen) and their own private entrance. As for kids, we had a large family. We had 5 children, plus we also raised two more foster children. I couldn't have done that without a larger home, or everyone would have been on top of each other. Our foster daughters still had to share a bedroom, and our twin sons had to also share a bedroom.

Average family is 3 - 4 kids, but I've met ones who come from bigger family's who have 13 - 15 kids. Yes, holidays are most of the family - 2nd cousins included(about 60 of us, family reunions 300- 400 depending on who can fly in from out of state). Yes, celebrating small victory's' (even graduating elementary school) helps encourage more learning! Some houses in America also have whats called a Mother-In-Law Suite (a section of the house where it's set up like an attached apartment with a small kitchen and private bathroom for an aging grandparent to still be "independent" but everyone else is close enough to help.)

I go to two family reunions every year, one of them on my mother's Swedish side, the extended family that can have from 80 to 150 people. The other is just my mother's descendants with 35 to 50 people attending. These family live across the US and we also have cousins who come from Sweden to join in our annual celebration. Lots of good food and fun.
