The term you want to read about is "Finlandization"; named after the dismissive, forced/fearful neutrality relationship between Soviet Union and Finland. This sketch is playing on the core issue in play: Finland "had no actual "balls" to oppose USSR". While it was often boasting among itself that USSR was in the wrong, "then so what?". Anger the Kremlin (too much) and Soviet occupation and 3rd war between Finland and USSR was on within days. President Kekkonen for example was (in)famous for playing the "Keep Russia Happy" game really well - almost to the point of being seen a straight-up puppet of USSR. Urban myth on it claims that that was the whole point of it. To appear subservient (and dictatorial regional leader) enough to stay under the radar but having enough connections behind the Soviet Politics to be able to quickly get and benefit from whatever was needed. The truth is prolly somewhere in-between. The was enough legitimate fear of USSR to not trust them blindly and enough elbow-grease and opportunistic attitude to not get bogged down by the larger bureaucracy and preferring to make deals straight with the source.

Exactly, that was "finlandization" well described. Weird that they dare to say it that straight in 80's, or early 90's not sure when this was filmed.

Yeah, that was the comedic point of this sketch describing the "chip on the shoulder" thinking. This was from 80's, maybe things have changed but yeah. Small country etc. ...metaphor like "small dog, big..." you know the saying. But yeah, as a Finnish, i do believe quality over quantity 👍

It's about Swedes laughing about Finns who won't dare to say anything to the "bully" USSR, but they did (tho USSR doesn't care at all) to prove themselves to Swedes

I'm not sure about year when this has made, but we had president named Kekkonen who was very liked and loved on Russian side and our own side and he made really safe moves To Russian side. He made us like Russian puppets some kind of and didnt want to get them angry for nothing. So even our news on papers, radios etc was not allowed To do anything negative about Russia or russians.

Kekkonen was president from 56 to 82. This color episode of Spedeshow is from season 84-87, so Koivisto was president.

It wasn't just Kekkonen's fault. Kekkonen continued the so-called Paasikivi Line, which was chosen more or less out of necessity after a lost war. The idea was that peaceful cooperation with the Soviet Union was the most important thing and took precedence over everything else. However, Kekkonen constantly tried to establish as good relations with the West as possible without angering the Soviet Union. In retrospect, it is easy to say that the Soviet Union was too pleased, but the end result was at least economically good..

I do believe sometimes Finland gets left out. Or like people don't care much about Finland. But I mean. I can't really blame people for not caring much about a country they haven't had anything to do with in the first place. And also everyone is allowed to have their own opinion.

Finland has always had a few problems with Russian airspace violations. On the other hand, they just happen. the international airspace of the Gulf of Finland is so narrow that Russian planes fly towards Finland and Estonia every now and then without any intention, and airspace violations have happened to others as well as Russians, at least Sweden and the United States have violated Finnish airspace (probably not on purpose). But of course, when this happens to be the case, it's the perfect place for Russia to test how Finland will react if Russia violates Finland's airspace just a little bit. I'm not quite sure if Finland wants to act bigger than itself, but Finland has always taken the threat from the east seriously, on the other hand, it's usually been a bit difficult for us to act against Russia's will. It has been said that when other countries answered no to the Soviet Union, Finland answered yes, but no.

I think the point is that Russia keeps invading our airspace with military level airplanes, and basically we cannot do anything about it, except be upset. As for the part of us not being on the world stage, back in those days we laughed about it as a self-awareness thing. Nowadays the world is different and we are noticed and recognised in a whole different way. This show was made in the 80's and Finns were very aware that we are just a stain on the map to the rest of the world. Not probably wanting to be more but just making fun of the fact.

This Show is from the late eighties, before the fall of Berlin wall and sudden crush of Sovjet. "Finlandisation"... Well, so very angry we got 2022 after some centuries of this country harrassing in the hoods, so we finally got fed up and joined NATO in the speed lane. Now Putin threatens, but we ask the essential question: "SO WHAT?!" (Sweet revenge...😎 )
