There is a huge difference in grocery stores and prices throughout the country. Sales will not always be the same amount throughout the country at even the same stores. He was a little high on some items but my relatives from England are quite surprised at how expensive our food is here (even at Walmart) compared to their prices back home. No we don't have little bags inside big bags of chips but brand name chips (Lays) large bag yesterday was $4.59 at a cheaper store. 1 pound of cheaper hamburger $4.29 Even though I thought some of his prices were a little high, his overall theory is correct. We do pay more for food here. To be honest, it's gotten way worse in the last few years. (don't want to get into that area) In California I usually get produce/fruit at a good price but, during winter months a lot if shipped in from Mexico. You also have to remember the areas of the country whereas prices may be a little higher due to shipping costs. @@L3WGReacts

This is with shipping from the mainland and our higher wages for workers (our minimum wage is 15.75/HR) included....I don't know where this guy went to shop...we have Sam's, Walmart, Safeway, Costco, Times and Foodland here, and depending where you shop and the sales, we still pay less than his New Jersey prices! @@slimnim1753 Yes, they are, it's called Ax the Food Tax, but it's a fading out over the course of several years, not right away. Kansas still has a high sales tax though (around 8.5%). As someone who has lived in southwestern Kansas for four years now and looking back at how much I paid back in Wisconsin, it's much more expensive here. I use the calculator on my phone when I go out shopping to help budget/see how much I can spend on my grocery shop, and here in Kansas, I have to add $2 to everything I buy to come (usually within $2-5) close to what the final cost at the register is.

As people have mentioned there are stores that pretty much reach a national level like Walmart, however a lot of Americans shop at what can be considered regional levels. Another problem with the pricing is that pricing can very by region and state. For example someone living in Oklahoma will be shocked by pricing in California, heck there is even a pricing difference in the Sate of California. This would of been better by using a national chain, but that might not of been fair as a national level brand would have so much more purchasing power to aquire items at a lower cost.

Lots of stores sell food items. That doesn't make them a grocery store.A grocery store is a retail store that primarily retails a general range of food products, which may be fresh or packaged. Walmart and Target sell a lot more than just groceries. In the video the stores being price compared are stores that primarily sell food items. It would be dishonest to compare a store that relies on selling just food items for the bulk of their income with a store that also sells furniture, tires, and electronics, with food making up a fraction of their income. Just like you're being dishonest by pretending you don't understand that.

This person should have picked an ALDI or Trader Joe’s as the store she selected in the UK had an ALDI match on many items. The other thing is grades of meat matter greatly when looking at cost. Select, versus Choice or Prime. Many people here also buy direct from the producer. Pork is probably significantly cheaper in the US. Salmon in Washington is best caught. 😊 The fishing license is less than the cost of a couple of pounds of salmon.

You need to shop the sales and buy in bulk. And cook meals that stretch and aren't just for one night. I save LOADS of money in America cooking at home compared to eating out. Just dropped $120 today on sales items to stock up. But you've got to do some meal planning and like I said, make large batches of stretchable meals, like soups, stews and casseroles. If you're doing steak and potatoes every night, then it's more expensive. But if you mix in some casseroles and lo mein and pasta dishes and soups...etc., you can really stretch the dollar, or Euro. Edit--Also, growing a garden and fishing and hunting help offset it quite a bit too. ;)

as everyone said, regions vary a lot with population density and cost of living, BUT also the inflation since 2020 has been OFF THE CHARTS. I have been going to grocery stores all over town the entire time in disbelief watching the prices climb every time I go there. Gives me such anxiety. Investigations have proven that it's profit and greed from the monopolies that control the food chain and medium-large stores are also under a few main umbrella ownership corporations. Which is why you'll find me at Aldi & Lidl, Walmart also trying to eat less instead of visiting the Giants and Safeways etc. where I live in DC.

This guy is off his rocker. Both stores in the US that he is comparing to UK only have a slight regional distribution. In addition, ACME is also owned by Albertson's which is a mid-to-high scale (slightly high scale), and both retailers only operate in higher cost-of-living areas. I would not shop in either as their prices are higher than normal. In Maryland for example, you can purchase a loaf of bread ranging between 1 - 1.50 USD. Cans of soup can be found for around .68 cents a can, if your willing to buy five cans. Our biggest increase, so far, seems to be dairy and meat with some increasing over 100% since our new ruling class took over.

We would have to buy everything from Whole Foods or Trader Joe's (which aren't everywhere btw) in order to make it all that expensive. New Jersey is notoriously expensive to live in. The prices are different across the states. Prices for oranges, for example, might be cheaper the closer you are to the orange orchards down south, but you pay more up north because the store has to ship the product and they have to account for that. However, for anyone saying Walmart is everywhere...they 100% don't charge the same amount for items in every store. That too depends on where you are in the country and even in the state and city. I grew up in NJ so I am familiar with both Acme and Shoprite. ShopRite is by far the grocery retailer with the most # of stores, but you would be hard to find one outside of the NorthEast, NJ, PA, NY, MD, CT. Across the country Walmart and Target would be the most common discount grocery stores. Kroger and Albertsons would probably be next up. So many of the grocery stores are regional. In the South East Publix would definitely be up there. I would say we are more expensive but not as much as this guy said. NJ is one of the most expensive states to live in. Pay is also higher, but it doesn't make up for it, especially if you add in NJ property taxes. California is also very expensive but they have an extended growing season and more ports of entry for consumer goods, therefore making grocery prices more reasonable than NJ. Even is you were to use Walmart the price of something could vary across the US. So much has to do with shipping, which is expensive.

Each state has a food item that they produce which will be cheaper in that state depending on regulations. So like the meat and milk companies that are main producers set the price and the farther you are from that industry the more you pay in shipping cost. So in Wisconsin known for Milk the prices are set there. Milk in Wisconsin is 2.80 a gallon and will be 6 to 8 dollars a gallon in California. Same as in the south you can get a 4 pack of ribeye cuts for 8 dollars and a two pack of ribeye in the north cost 28 dollars.

I'm from Texas and have never heard of either of those. Our large grocery store is HEB. And Walmart. We also have Randalls, Krogers, Albertsons, Costco, Sam's, Whole Foods, Trader Joes, etc... So it should be stated that it varies state to state as far as grocery stores and how much the cost is. Plus the cost of groceries varies if you just buying straight up name brands only or if you are purchasing the equivalent of that item/brand but the store's line instead. Like for Walmart, it's Great Value. HEB it is HEB or also Hill Country. Randalls it is Signature. Etc... They are suppose to be lower costing alternatives to name brands. Plus other factors are: the sales the stores put, plus in-store coupons they have. For example 60 ct eggs. were reasonable priced before Covid, but since it effected shipment, etc.. the price jumped to $20.+ for 60 ct. eggs. Luckily afterwards it went back down. So now 60 ct eggs are $9.49. Half a gallon of milk $1.99 or $1.79 (non name brand) depending on the store. So this video is definitely does not represent how it is across the US. The cost of living varies state to state. Some higher and lower than others. As far as farms. Not sure in other states but here not all farms go through major grocery stores. So we buy from them at farmers markets or directly from the farm itself. For example there is a farm here who is run by a military vet who sells wagyu beef since he raises the cattle. Or we buy raw milk from farms here from time to time. Etc...

I'm pretty sure the reason fresh foods are so expensive in the US compared to prepackaged foods is that there are government subsidies for a lot of the prepackaged stuff, so it comes out a lot less expensive, and there aren't those same subsidies for fresh foods, so the customer is paying for the entire production chain to get that item from seed to shelf without the government stepping in and absorbing the cost of one or more steps in that production chain.

I'd say even at Walmart with today's prices he is spot on. The funny part is all these brands and milk are primarily made in the U.S., grown in the U.S. LOL. That's because of subsidy tax where we pay more money upfront for the government to pay our farmers to over produce which in the price to grow doesn't pay enough per pound. So our government cuts the farmers a check to cover the losses. Which allow our food industry to sell cheap, make cheap and supply the entire world with cheap food and drinks paid by Americans at the grocery stores.

For the people who are complaining about the stores being unfamiliar, remember that we have regional subsidiaries in the US that are part of the same major chain. If you've never heard of Acme, you may have heard of its parent company, Albertson's, which owns Safeway, Von's, Carr's, Jewel, Kings, Pavilion, Plated, Randalls, Shaw's, Tom Thumb, and United Supermarkets. I do agree that New Jersey cost of living is much higher than a lot of places in the US, so it's hardly representative of national prices. The problem with comparing the price of stuff in the US to anywhere else is the same as comparing most things about the US to anywhere else. The way the market is set up to allow for prices to be set within limits, to however the company wishes to set them and the size of the US means that things aren't going to be priced consistently from one region to another. For example, a loaf of the same bread priced at $3.19 in this video costs $3.99 at the nearest Randall's to me, $3.79 at the nearest Kroger, and $2.92 at the nearest Walmart.

Yeah, cut the price in half at least, versus what he’s claiming! First, there are national wide grocery stores, not just Walmart or Target. Take a look at all the places Kroger owns y’all. Yes, it’s not all Kroger stores everywhere, but they own other store lines and between them all, they do indeed cover the nation. That’s important as they can negotiate a lower price! Cost of living varies across the country as stores in larger cities in the northeast or in California are going to raise prices as people make, on average, more money. So, they want a larger amount of it, and they have to offset their employees making more, their rent being higher, crappy roads costs more to transport the goods…it’s a vicious cycle that never ends. The price of Corn Flakes is the big one I noticed. For what he said a small box of Corn Flakes cost, here you could get a giant box of Fruit Loops or Apple Jacks, the more expensive and sugary “kids” cereal. He’s not mentioned the thing that all of us know…since Biden took office things have doubled in price. Typical Democrats doing what baby communists do!

The largest grocery chain in the U.S. is Kroger which is located throughout the Midwest, South, and West. They are located in 33 states. They also own Fred Meyer which is located out West and the Northwest and WinnDixie which is located down South. Target and Wal-Mart are also located everywhere but aren’t technically considered a grocery chain since they sell all kind of merchandise. ALL of these stores are MUCH cheaper than the prices he was quoting from Jersey. That’s another reason no one wants to live in New Jersey!😃 For example, I purchased a 1/2 gallon of milk from Kroger today for $2 NOT $3! I could’ve purchased a gallon (which is what most Americans do) for $2.50! I only purchase the 1/2 gallon because I don’t use that much milk anymore. All of that said, our grocery prices have skyrocketed the past couple of years. There are several reasons for this including the fact that the trucking industry is having trouble getting younger people into that career. Therefore shipping rates are going way up and EVERYTHING purchased at ANY box store is brought to that store by truck.

Iowa is cheap for corn. ETC.

One half gallon of milk is usually $1.79 at Kroger, and Aldi and Walmart don’t really bother with half gallons, because a gallon is usually $2.19-$2.39, varying from week to week with shifts in the market. I have never seen prices as high as he cites, but then I live in the middle of the state of Georgia, and we actually have lower prices on milk than most places, for some reason, and the only shockingly high prices I’ve ever seen were on eggs a couple years ago during the bird flu outbreak, when half the laying hens in the country were culled to stop the spread of the disease.

On that note a lot of people aren’t aware that Dillon’s, Baker’s, Pick n Save, Mariano’s, Gerbes, King Soopers, Fry’s, Ralph’s and more are all owned by Kroger. Kroger is the largest grocery store chain in the US but runs under many different names.

These are popular grocery stores in the northeastern section of the US. Walmart and target are stores that sell a lot of different things not a grocery store. They are branching out to include groceries but that isn’t their primary market. Grocery stores (of which Acme, Save-a-lot, Wegmans, Albertsons, Harris Teeter, Piggly Wiggly, Food Lion , Kroger, Publix, Safeway and others are) sell only grocery/grocery related items(otc pharmaceuticals etc). The reason Americans are generally more overweight is due to it being significantly less expensive to eat the food thats not as health. Eating healthy is EXPENSIVE.

I shopped at Kroger in North Georgia yesterday, so I grabbed my receipt to compare. $1.49 for 20oz loaf of white bread, $2.89 for 1 gallon Milk, $2.29 for Kroger brand Corn Flakes. I recall the same size box of Kellogg's corn flakes was over $5. Store brands are always way cheaper than big name brands, and he used a lot of big name brands in his vid. $0.59 per pound for bananas, which is a lot more expensive than what I used to pay a year ago (like $0.30 a pound). $7.99 for a 10 pound bag of fresh Chicken Leg Quarters (so $0.80 per pound), note Georgia is the top producer of poultry in the US, so should be pretty cheap comparatively. I also shop at Walmart and their prices are pretty close to the same, +/- depending on what you buy. Usually a little cheaper overall than Kroger if you are shopping for the week. Now if I go to a Whole Foods store in Atlanta, then yeah, prices will be similar to what he quoted. Just depends on where you shop and where you live.

Dual US/UK citizen here - live in NY/NJ metro-area, and I would liken the price jump to as if you were buying your groceries in deep metropolitan London. (The drop-off of the metro-area effect on prices is further out in NY and most of America than in the UK) Another thing to consider is that most shops here are within a block of another shop of a different name (think if Tesco and Lidl were next to each other), so most people might make their trip to the shops in two stops or maybe even three instead of one, especially if a Walmart or Costco is one of those nearby stores (Buying some goods in bulk to get for cheap, and others at the normal shop for smaller quantities or better quality). Finally, one last thing is that our shops in the US are chock-full of sales and private-label (store-brand) items. I personally buy everything I can from store brand, unless the name brand is on a silly sale.

Southern Californian resident here. Yes, groceries are outrageously expensive now. People regularly go to several grocery stores for specific items. Aldi’s, Trader Joe’s, Vallarta and Vons.

As a 43 year old truck driver who has driven all over the US for 22 years, I've KNEVER heard of either of the "American" chains.

Pricing in the US is regional. Oklahoma is going to pay less than they do in New Jersey for groceries. Some items will be more as transportation costs are more and things like that, but taxes and utilities and many other factors account for the cost of products.

In Virginia, a loaf of bread at Walmart costs between a $1.42(plain white) to $5.98(organic grains.) New Jersey is an expensive state so you can’t compare their prices to the prices in another place. I spend, on average, about $150-$180 for 40-65 items depending in the brand and items. Store like Martin’s or Wegman’s cost slightly more but their produce and meat is fresher and lasts longer. Food Lion is about the same price as Walmart but I prefer buying their meat because I can get the organic meat on sale there for less per pound than I can the cheap meat at Walmart. When I visited the U.K. the biggest price differences were for what Americans consider basic and that was for bread, eggs and milk. The rest of the prices were pretty comparable honestly.

Maybe NJ just sucks. Wise shoppers can eat good food they like for $10 per person per day. We shop sales at 5 different places and just 2 of those each week. We only go out to eat 3 times per month. All other meals are from groceries for maybe $600/mo for two people and maybe $140 on those 3 times per month going out to a nice place. Taxes on groceries where we are are nearly nothing. There are different trade-offs depending on state. BUT it used to be even cheaper before Let's Go B.

He checked stores in one of the higher priced areas in the US. Walmart, Target, Aldi & some form of Kroger (Kroger, Maier's, Dillons, Fry's, etc) stores are common throughout the US. Also, lots of Americans buy off brands to save money as those are the same as the name brand. The same 18 oz box of name brand cereal is double the price of the off brand. This is normal across the board. I also bought bread last night for $1.87. Prices also vary from state to state & region to region, just like our taxes do.

His comparissons are suspect as well, like comparing a box of Instant Quaker's Oats to a box of Quick Oats. Kellog's Corn Flakes are $6.28, but for the "Mega Box", 714.4 grams. His prices are off, he's from New Jersey, which has a high cost of living, and his selection o stores is regional and vague. I call "B.S.!"

We have Food Lion, Piggly Wiggly, and Wal-Mart near us. I'll use Food lion. This dude lived in Jersey which is just more expensive to live in than here. 1. Bread loaf (cheapest no frills) $1.59+ 2. Quaker oats (same as shown) $3.50 3. Corn Flakes (larger size) $5.49 4. Basmati rice (smallest available 2 pounds) $5.49 5. Land O Lakes (same as pic) $6.29 6. Milk (1/2 gallon) $2.09 7. Block of cheese (he didn't even use equal)(Sharp Cheddar) $2.50+ 8. Dozen Eggs (standard) $3.09 9. Onion $1.49 per pound. $4.99 for 3 pound bag (Sweet Vidalia) 10. Tomato on the vine $1.99 per pound (usually 4) 11. Pink lady apple (just 1) $2.39 per pound or $4.99 for 3 pound bag) 12. Banana (single) $0.59 per pound 13. Carrot (2 pound bag) $1.99+ 14. Raisins (32oz bag in pic) $6.29 15. Cucumber (just 1) $0.79 or $2.49 for pound (6). 16. Hunts petite diced $1.39 17. Potato (Russet, varies by size) $4.99 for 5 pound bag or $1.39 per pound. 18. Hamburger (80/20) $3.99 per pound 19. Chicken breast (1.8 pounds shown, varies) $2.69 per pound w/package amounts varying. 20. Smoked bacon $4.48 per pack of similar size shown $66.61 for my total. This isn't including an MVP sale. My 2-4 day trips usually run $100'ish but that's for 2 people. One week a 12 pack of my soda, Sun Drop, is $7.99 the next week it's BOGO or 2 for $10. On the other hand my dogs favorite treats are $11.99 at Food Lion but are $24.09 at Wal-Mart (not same brand but similar duck jerky strips). You figure out what's cheaper where and on what days/weeks and shopping is no problem. Depends on how low your standards are and for how long you will put up with cheap food to determine which one is more feasible. I would say eating out, depending on the state/location, would be way more costly especially if you add in Uber delivery or what not.

Aldi & Walmart & Wegmans are most popular here in Upstate NY. Here in U.S the minimum wage increases so does the price of everything else. You have to pay employees more the business increases the price of goods & services. The cost of living also increases. Basically there is no way a multi million dollar company is going to decrease it's revenue. So the States (people) pay for the increases. For fresh fruits & vegetables we get some relief in growing season (May - October) where apples, strawberries, tomatoes , squash, onions and many others can be grown and are plentiful here. You can also buy eggs from farmers as well. We have alot of Amish growers who have stands and even their own grocery stores the public utilize. They butcher & process their own meat. It's not readily available in most states, we are very fortunate.

There’s a lot of competition for U.S. commodities. We export a ton of food, and even though “dumping” technically is illegal or at least frowned upon, it is not uncommon for food and other things produced in the U.S. to cost less overseas than in the U.S. (Shout out to the college textbook companies in particular for this one.)
