The first clip is from the University of Iowa in Iowa City where I grew up. They built the children's hospital so it over looks the stadium and they have a large room at the very top with huge windows to view the game. The hospital staff invite the kids and their family to come tailgate and watch the game in that room and they have treats and games. At the end of the first quarter, of every home game, all players (from both teams), coaches, fans, and refs turn to wave to the kids. It is pretty cool!

The second clip is at UT, the university of Tennessee. Our nickname is the big orange. The fans (~102,000 people) know their ticket seat and section ahead of time. When they announce they are going to do “the checkerboard stadium”, they announce the color each section should wear (white or orange). That’s how you get the two colors on those days. You think tailgating is something, we have the “Vol Navy”. It’s houseboats, yachts, even fishing boats, all tie up right next to the stadium, which is on the river, and have a huge party on the water while watching the game. We are called the Vols because Tennessee is know as the volunteer state. We traditionally have more volunteers to go fight for America than any other state. Yeah, dude you gotta go at least once in your life. Just come in early September to mid November and you can go to a game!

Yup. It is in Texas and almost that way in Tennessee. I think Alabama is pretty close to Texas/Tennessee fanatics. It's a lot of money for schools. A school.with a great football team will get money from alumni for football while schools without a good football team, but GREAT academic accomplishments can wind up bankrupt because they won't be supported by the alumni because the football team sucks. Some of my favorite memories growing up are from game days. My mom's side of the family has season tickets for everyone for every home game at Ohio State, so whenever there was a home game, we headed to Columbus and we all would stay in my Aunt and Uncle's house under one roof for the weekend. Those memories alone and the traditions we created for ourselves are so valuable to me. So while the whole family is extremely into football itself due to our upbringing, it still is a huge family affair for us and at tailgates and games you'll see loads of families having an absolute blast. Now I live in NYC and am rarely able to make it home for games, but whenever I do, it's still the same drill, staying at my Aunt and Uncle's home, tailgating in the same parking space, and sitting in the same seat (although now there is more drinking and partying involved 😉)

So as a University of Georgia fan this how we do it. Let’s say the game is at 1930. By 0600 I’m awake and getting ready to head to my spot to set up tailgating. Set everything up and start cooking breakfast. Once done start drinking and playing games. Lunch. Drink and play more games or watch other games on the TV. Then go to game. This year we can drink in the stadium. And your family and friends are there with you.

In regards to the popularity of American college football, keep in mind that American football developed, and became popular, at the college level over 30 years BEFORE the founding of the NFL in 1920. The oldest major college sports league is the Big 10 Conference, which has been playing football since 1896 and basketball since 1906. The NFL didn't catch and surpass Major League Baseball and College Football in popularity until the 1960's and 1970's, when I was a kid. College football and basketball are also multi-billion dollar industries comparable to the major professional sports leagues in revenue generated. We have high schools nearby to where I live that have been playing football since the 1890's!

Love the lights home games at night. The Hawkeyes ranked 24 out of 25 in 2023 football poll, but this tradition? It is a Win/Win for everyone! C'mon over!

Lewis, college football season is September through January so by the end of the season it can be very cold, and you can even sit through a snowstorm. I am in Miami, and I am a graduate of the University of Miami. Here in Florida, we also have the University of Florida and also Florida State University...there is also University of South Florida in Tampa, and University of Central Florida, that all play football in the top level in the NCAA (National Collegate Athletic Association).

BBQ, beer, music, laughing A LOT, and welcoming anyone walking by to join and offer them your recipes... doesn't matter if wearing your team or the other side. Would love to have you join in. It's a madhouse zoo of humanity and just an excuse to be together ❤️

When I was in college eons ago my parents, close friends and I would go to football games and it was SUCH fun! The atmosphere is unique in America - those great autumn Saturdays just for college football. Then a nice meal out somewhere after the game - what a good time! It was an all day affair. Made even better of your team won.

Arizona has two rival universities, ASU in Tempe and U of A, down in Tucson. ASU has a huge letter A painted on the side of Sun devil mountain over looks their football stadium. Whenever U of A comes to play ASU, students have to camp overnight up on the mountain to keep students from U of A from painting their A, red.

I live 2 hours away from Neyland Stadium...holds over 100k fans at the University of Tennessee You should have seen the game a couple of years ago when UT beat Alabama. The refs held their arms up to say the kick was good and took off running immediately because all 102k fans stormed the field in celebration...the goal post was found in the river a couple of days later

Yea college games are hype, the tailgating and in the stands. School have their fight songs that everyone sings in the crowd and you wind up huggin and hi fiving stangers. It is very much a friends and family thing, kids, grandparents, the girl you're dating, a lot of families have multiple alumni to the school and even of the rival team, its a big thing.

Big University of Florida fan. You’re right. Family event. Huge parade before! On the football field itself the noise level is louder that a 747 airplane taking off. The players can’t hear each other or coaches! Gator chomp chants. Whole stadium sings the Schools fight song and sways! We had the 2-bits man before every game lead the crowd in two bits chant! RIP! Now, after 3rd quarter the stadium sings a TOM Petty song (huge recording artist- look him up!) who passed on recently. He born there and went to school there and worked as a janitor be fire making it big. Whole day or weekend experience! Go GATORS!!!!

the fans aren't mixed together in the Tennessee clip. Their colors are orange and white. They "stripe the stadium" by having some sections wear orange and others wear white.

Professional sports games are generally more expensive & dont have a 'supporters section' that allows for songs & chants. Thats why you generally hear a DJ play songs for them to chant to. College has the 'student section' with cheaper tickets for the students, so they get rowdy & all have their own traditions

And no fans mixed together 😂 UT Vols (Tennessee) colors are orange and white. So the colors are being worn and fans mixed together. The opposition are across in the other stands. Our stadium is HUGE.

University of Kentucky, when I was in band we would make a giant K and march it up and down the field in pre-game. I lived in fear of being the one idiot that didn’t do an about face on time. The band also plays “My Old Kentucky Home” at the end of games.

Football isn’t the only sport that has this sort of atmosphere; it’s just bigger for the major university football programs. There is a lot of such atmospheres for hockey and basketball. In Boston, we have a special “playoff” game known as the BeanPot. (Named for the famous food, Boston Baked Beans.). There are several colleges/universities that compete during their seasons to win one of the two spots to play in the BeanPot. Lots of turnout for those! I am not a basketball fan (I think it’s a boring sport) but I shared with you on another video of the atmosphere a good college/university band can play into at these events.

something to remember that college/university are used different in the US and UK from what i've seen. College in the US is University education (so after gradeschool ends). Most people use college and university interchangeably. University might be the school at large, but then theres the college of fine arts, college of science, college of etc. to refer to the specific programs

I'm beginning to think you need to plan your trip around a College game if you truly want to see one. Football season is September thru January. Check if some subs or patrons can get ahold of tickets a few months in advance then start planning on what you want to see around that region of the country, whether it's the West Coast and Desserts, Southeast, New England states etc. For September and October games places like Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania & New England aren't cold yet. In November, December, January you might want to be farther south for the warmth. Places like Texas, Florida, Georgia, California and Arizona are all good choices. What ever region you want to visit, just let your online friends know far enough in advance and I'm sure someone can hook you up.
