My old art teacher in high school was actually one of the divers working on salvaging the ship in the 60’s. Pretty cool.
@nilsekluund
@nilsekluund 3 месяца назад
One of the main contributing factor for the sinking of the Wasa ship, was the fact that the king wanted to add an extra canon deck to the ship after it was designed and construction had already began. This made the ship more top heavy then designed plus the extra weight from the canons limited the amount of ballased that was needed to keep the ship upright. The designer and the ship builders knew that this was an issue, but in a hiraci monarchy the king dose was he want. It didn't help that the king was abroad fighting a war during this time and that all this communication happened through letters.

This movie doesn't describe how huge the boat is. Length 69 meters, width 11.7 meters, height with mast 52 meters, weight metric tons 1210.

This is actually an example of when Sweden was a very hierarchal country/society. The king had decided that this was the kind of ship that he wanted and people were afraid to speak out against him, even though some people/experts knew that this ship probably wouldnt be seaworthy.

I was 182 cm tall when I registered for conscription, and it was the average hight for men at the time, I believe the average is shorter now, possibly because of immigration. The main problem with the ship was actually too much head space, which made the ship top heavy. Ships are very well preserved (usually) in the Baltic sea, since the brackish water prevents ship worms from living there, it's also less oxygen in the water.

Swedes today are a lot taller than we were in the 80s, 90s. I work outside and spend time among people entire days. I have always been among the tallest in my class with my 180 cm. When I see todays youths it amazes me how tall many are. But yes our average height would probably be a lot higher without immigrants dragging it down but I still think the curves goes up.

You say you know for a fact that people that built ships like this weren't treated well wich is a lie. The people who built these whips weren't slaves. They were some the best ship builders that money could buy, (never said they didn't make any wrong's). But to imply they where like slave workers is just so wrong..

You have the Mary Rose Museum in the UK and we can thank the cold, dark, almost oxygen-free waters that helped Vasa and Mary Rose to be in a good state and strong enough to bring it out of the water and into a museum. Now, when a historically important ship is found and explored it's left in the water where it sank as it is too expensive to maintain in a museum and probably risky for for it to stay in good shape.

Stockholm and especially around the old town “Gamla Stan” is situated with the Baltic Sea on the one side and the large fresh water lake of Mälaren on the other. These two bodies of water meet at Slussen ”The Lock” and mix in the harbour of Stockholm. This makes the water neith salty nor fresh but brackish which was ideal to preserve the ship from wood rot and parasites which is why its practically intact to this day.

I am not sure if it's a myth or not. But I have heard that there are historical resources, although I can not name any, that says that scandinavian people on average is taller than most other countries population. I questioned this myself when I visited a preserved older village further north in Sweden because everything was built so tiny. That in turn made me question how tiny were the rest of Europe people in order to call Scandinavians tall if Scandinavians were indeed shorter earlier in history. I believe that the average height of a man is around 1.80 cm and the average height of a woman is around 1.65 cm in modern times. Statistics is not my thing, so I might be wrong.

Gold does not corrode, but it was a very thin gold foil (like micrometers or even thinner) so it was probably washed away as the wood beneath is started decomposing after 350 odd years on the sea bottom..

Most older wooden ships across the globe have rotted away but thanks to the particular levels of freshwater and seawater mixing in stockholm harbour there aren't many organisms that break down wood that can survive (too salty for the freshwater living ones and vice versa) because the baltic sea has a very low salt content to begin with.

We Nordics are quite tall on average and it has some to do with our genetics, us Nordic people have the highest % of Yamnaya genes (around 40-50%) and Yamnayan's were extremely tall at that time (they were around about 5,000 years ago).. Swedes (natives) have been among the tallest in the world for 100s of years. We probably are still the tallest but when you make statistics you measure the average of all people within a country. The last 10 years we have taken a lot (more than normal) of immigrants/refugees from outside of Europe to Sweden. Today we end up in the 17th place of tallest people. If you would only measure native Swedes I am sure we would still have the first spot before the Netherlands.

Yes people were shorter then. I'm 1.90+ and have problems with ceilings in some older houses... There are no ship worms in the Baltic, which is Vasa and several other ships from the period are well preserved on the bottom of the sea.

People were shorter back in those days, but Swedes were still considered tall on average, even back then. King Karl XII (Carolus Rex) who was born about 50 years after the Vasa sank, was 178cm tall. The average was 163cm at the time. The founding father of modern Sweden (Gustav Vasa) was 173cm tall. Tbh, many Swedish men these days are around 185cm tall, but there are definitely still a lot of ethnically Swedish men below 175cm. I think when tourists come here they tend to see the tall ones first, as they blot out the sun for the rest of us :)

What would be considered tall? I'm 5'9", not that uncommon for a Swedish woman, men might be about 6 feet, 6'1"? Of course some are shorter, some taller. If feels pretty much the same in the Nordic countries. Height has changed somewhat over the centuaries, but not as much as one would think (I believe). It"s partly to do with the brackish water in Stockholm that made the ship stay in such a good shape for over 300 years. It is kind of incredible, but the colours and the gold wore off... There are a lot of ships on the bottom of the ocean around Stockholm at least, they dive and explore them. The museum VRAK tells the stories of these, It"s next to the Vasa museum.
