Older American here. I live in southern New Mexico, the desert southwest of the US. There is nothing quite like driving on the highway through the empty desert, late at night in the dark & seeing the lights of a town or city glowing off in the distance as you approach. It is so surreal.

That's the feeling I always got as well. Driving on a dark, empty highway---and ahead--you see a string of lights spanning the horizon. Glowing lights in the darkness, stretching out on both sides of the highway, beckoning you. Welcoming you, and letting you know you are not alone in what appeared to be a dark, isolated world that you were traveling through. It feels magical.

I found people in Paris very nice when I visited. The first night in Paris I was lost near the Gard D Nord. I couldn’t find the place to pick up my car. I went into a small hotel and told the desk clerk that I was lost. She smiled at me and said “no one is never lost in Paris” then she helped me figure out where I need to be. She called them to let them know was coming ( so they wouldn’t close their location). Then she called me a taxis and told the driver where to take me. It was so kind of her.

I've found people in Europe not to be as outwardly friendly as we Americans are. But, If you ask them for assistance, they are more than willing to help and will often go out of their way to help you. One of the things that my travels have taught me is that, as different as we all are, people are people, are basically good, and want to help others. As long as you show them some respect, they will go the extra mile (or beyond) for you.
@alb91878

@@kevinrakow380that's what I learned living overseas. When I was a kid my dad was in the military and we lived in Germany on two separate occasions and I forgot where else. Yeah the people aren't nearly as outwardly friendly and they tend to be a lot more reserved but like you said if you give them respect they will be very kind to you. I think a lot of people from this country that may have had a bad experience were probably acting foolish or rude and it pissed people off. Or they just were expecting them to be as outwardly friendly we are, and when they weren't they probably thought they were rude.

I guess it depends on the location in the US, but I know that here in Missouri especially SE Missouri where I live, people will always smile and either do a nodding of the head to say "hi" or if we are waiting in line for something, people will make small talk to other strangers. I will usually compliment someone on their appearance such as "nice tattoos" or "nice car" and they are generally polite and will respond politely.

Ive never been to France but one of my best experiences in my entire life was a French family in NYC. I was visiting 9/11 Ground Zero for the first time and that French family happened to be behind my best friend and I in line to go into the museum. We struck up a conversation and they told us they were in the States for vacation for two weeks but paying their respects at Ground Zero was a top priority, they werent going to leave without doing that which we thought was so kind. Not just that they felt that way but made it a point to tell us how important it was to them. When we walked in, and anyone who has been there knows, the entryway hallway is very overwhelming. I stopped and just started sobbing, Im from NH and two of the planes out of Boston hit this area very hard lets say.. I felt these arms around my shoulders and it was them. We barely even spoke the same language and here we were all just holding each other and crying together. They sincerely gave me a gift that day, I cant think about 9/11 without thinking about them and the love and comfort from these total strangers. 9/11 was a horrific day but on that day I realized how much love came out of it too. Ill never see them again but Ill never forget that, they were wonderful people.

The USA history was different than the rest of the world. The westward expansion, taming a wilderness for habitation, and the need to rely on family, friends, and neighbors forced us to cooperate. In addition, extended lengths of time in relative isolation made accepting strangers a welcoming sight. In a growing country being inhabited by people from around the world, everyone was often a stranger to everyone else. That may explain why foreigners find Americans friendly. We are accustomed to strangers. In a big country where people in the past rarely traveled farther than they could walk in a day, another human was often a welcomed sight. A new face with new stories helped break the monotony.

This is similar to my theory of why people from other countries find Americans to be friendlier. Most Americans are descendants of immigrants. So many different cultures meant that communicating through language wasn't always easy. It emphasized communication through body language. Smiling and being polite was sometimes the best way to communicate so as not to accidentally offend another person. It became a habit passed down through each generation.

Yes, but our vehicle emissions regulations in the US on standard domestic vehicles are much more lax than those in Europe and the UK. I'm American, but lived in Germany. In considering costs for emissions compliance modifications, gas costs (approx $7-8 gal), repairs/maintenance, and higher import insurance rates, American novelty cars can be cost prohibitive to own in the UK and Europe.

@@GiminiRisingThe emissions requirements in the US are actually more strict in most cases. NOx, HC, are both lower than EU. Only CO is allowed a higher number in the US. That's why any European car is easily imported here for new sale, but the same can't be said for American cars in EU.

SMILING! 😄Remember, our country is a melting pot of every nationality in the world. From my American education, we began to smile at everyone centuries ago because there was such a diverse group of immigrants to the US, and smiling at each other, our ancestors acknowledged that we were all happy in our 'new home.' It was the only way in the 1700s and 1800s, with so many cultures emerging in the US, to say 'hello' to each other. Smiling and saying 'hi - how are you' has stuck with us for hundreds of years. Born and raised in Pennsylvania - there will never be anything more beautiful (with great wineries) than taking a trip to Niagara Falls - so gorgeous. Lewis, in case your curiosity got piqued when she mentioned something called ann-TIE-tum (Antietam) at around 4:00, it was a Civil War battle, and is called ann-TEET-um. It's 1 one of several thousand place names that catches people off guard with the thought, "How in the world do they pronounce this?" If you want to skip over into Canada, one of the best places for that is Niagara Falls. She mentioned the Air & Space Museum in DC, so they have space things, but they also have airplanes. She said around 16:20 that her favorite place was Medieval Times, which is a small chain of dinner and a show thing where you have medieval food, coupled with a show featuring knights.

@@sophistacate7612, the problem there was that the 2nd. 't' is a flapped 't'--something American English really seems to like. That's why I spelled it the way I did, since we don't pronounce the #2 't' as hard as the 1st.
@courtneyraymer6586
@courtneyraymer6586 4 месяца назад
The second “t” is actually pronounced as a ‘d”. American English does this in most words with “t”(s) in the middle versus the beginning or the end. The tongue is in the same position for both letters, but the “d” is sounded and the “t” isn’t. Some theorists think this happens because often the accented syllable is voiced stronger and the unaccented one receives the voiced or sounded letter because of the momentum. Elocutionists used to refer to this as “ lazy tongue”.

Every Sheetz I've been to has had sit down eating areas where you can eat the food you purchased. Most people do not sit down, but it is nice to have the option. I think I got hooked on it when I was able to buy a footlong sub sandwich for $4. Unfortunately, the prices have gone up over the last 5 or so years, so it no longer feels like I'm stealing food.😊 Plus, the gas (petrol) is usually one of the least expensive in the areas they are located.

If you get South, I mean, New Orleans is incredible for food, but a Southern country barbecue joint will blow your mind. It’s the way they cook the meat for hours that makes it so moist and tender, and delicious -it’s not just a flavor, it’s an amazing culture of its own. But, yes, you’ll want to have some local guide you to a great spot, because the best place might look like some run-down roadside shack… Anyway, yes, I’m sure with your personality you will find Americans very friendly and welcoming, and you will have a great time. If you want American football AND baseball, it might be difficult, since baseball is a summer thing and football is in the fall. baseball playoffs are in October, though, and the excitement at playoff games is off the charts, with the stadiums full. So in October, if you could catch a Baseball playoff game, then go to an NFL football game on Sunday, that would be a great week. 😀🇺🇸⚾️🏈

I had a friend in high school whose first language was Spanish, but could speak English perfectly. I asked her once what language she "thought" in, and she said it depended on the word. Mostly English (for her) but some Spanish words mean more of what she was thinking, or there wasn't a good English equivalent. Found that fascinating. Yes, you will get smiles, "hellos," held open doors. At the grocery the other day, I was wearing a band shirt (British new-wave 80s) and a Kangol hat (think 80s rap). Two totally different people made comments on one or the other, and we got into little conversations. They don't know me from Adam, but if you see something you like, compliments are encouraged. If you plan a Southern trip, maybe start with North Carolina - BBQ from both the east and west (mountain) sides of the state. Stop in Asheville, NC to see Biltmore and maybe stay in the Grove Park Inn. When you get to Atlanta, I'd be thrilled to take you and yours out for an adventure and meal (Waffle House, Chick-fil-A, BBQ). Then head south to Florida (Buc-cee's is on the way) - see NASA - then head inland for some "culture" (or theme parks). Then take a plane to Texas (wherever your fans/friends are) to try even more BBQ.

Here is a story about a woman named Helene Grimaud. She was born and raised in France but didn't like it there. She is a world famous concert pianist who performs all over the world. She moved to America and she achieved her life's dream. Everybody's got a dream no matter how crazy it seems to others. So what did she do? She bought some land north of New York City, a rural area, just the right place for what she wanted. She build her own private wolf preserve. Yep, she has her wolves, her dog, her house, and she seems very happy. Here it is. Most of it is about her piano concertizing and she is one of the greatest performing concert artists in the world today but her home is with her wolves. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-uE2P2nitE48.html The part about the wolves starts at 17:45

I've been to Medieval Times once before and it's actually quite an experience. It's a "dinner and a show" type of thing. You get to eat a lot of really nice food (no silverware though, keep that in mind, because it's supposed to be the medieval experience), and watch actors put on a show. The sword fighting and jousting was cool. Idk if they still do it but the swords made sparks when they clanged together during the fights. Was a really nice effect.

Before coming to the US you might want to line up some local people wherever you go who want to show you around. Maybe in each city you could have a few different people who would help you to see more things, and be more efficient about it too. They might even offer you a bedroom for a night or 2, which could save you some hotel money. When my girlfriend and I visited London for the first time I put out the word that we were coming , don't know the club scene and would like to meet some locals to help us get around. We ended up staying with some great people who took us all over to clubs and introduced us to people for a whole week. It was so much better than it would have been just going there as most tourists do. We saw and did much more than we would have on our own. Just a suggestion. If you come to LA I'll take you around if you want. You'd probably like some of my favs like The Wacko store in Hollywood, Amoeba Records, etc. Most tourists never know about the coolest places. Pot is legal here too!!!

11"30 That's Kewpie mayonnaise, a Japanese import. It's richer than normal mayo because it only uses the egg yolk, as opposed to the whole egg. You pay more for it, but it's definitely worth it. 14:07 I _think_ she said "Air & Space Museum," but she could have meant "Aerospace Museum," which is a difference without a distinction. I'm one of the ones who can control his dreams. It started as a stress response, my dreams being the one place where I felt any measure of control. From there, it blossomed into an art, a place where my creativity wasn't hampered by physical ability, material means, nor even by reality. My favorite one is when I'm struck by a meteor, but it encases me in a giant eggshell, and I undergo metamorphosis to emerge as a space dragon. Hundreds of meters long, wings made of tachyons knit together with stellar plasma, soaring on the solar wind, taking a sip from the photosphere of the nearest star for nourishment, the universe was my playground. Have I mentioned I have a crazy wild imagination? 😁 Medieval Times is a theme restaurant chain where they've taken dinner theater to its apex, providing jousts and other medieval sport, right in front of you as you dine. The idea is to give you a feeling of royalty. From what I've seen on YT, it's definitely an experience. Sheetz is an east coast convenience store chain. One thing you'll find in America is that a lot of chains are fairly large, but also very regional. You won't find a Sheetz out here in Minnesota, but they're all over the place out east. In Oklahoma you'll find a gas station/convenience store chain called QuikTrip, in the north we have one called Kwik Trip. Both are pronounced the same, but they are owned by different corporations. But if you *_REALLY_* want to be blown away by a gas station, go down to Texas and stop at a Bucky's. These are convenience stores the size of a small Wal-Mart. They have their own takeaway food (the various sweet rolls are legendary), clothing, incidentals for your car, and all kinds of branded souvenir stuff as well. It will flip your lid.

Talking to yourself in your head: As an American who learned French (though that was long ago, so don't ask me to translate anything now), I did get to thinking in French at times. But I'm an introvert. So for me that was a way of practicing when not in class. The funniest result of this was going from French class to Economics class and then answering an economics question in French because I hadn't switched my bring back over to English.

I know how you feel regarding the "American vibe", because when I'm in the U.K., I get so excited about your architecture, cars, streets, the Tube!, your accents!, history, even some of your "bad" food and your "good" food. Full diclosure: I fell in love with the Beatles in 1963 when there was a 2 or 3 page article about them in LIFE magazine. No one in the USA had heard about them at that time. Somehow, when I saw their pictures....I was in love! Never heard them sing a single note. Then...they came to America early in 1964 and appeared on "The Ed Sullivan Show". That was when Beatlemania exploded in America and, later that Summer, they were on the COVER of LIFE magzine! That's how I became interested in the U.K and then became an English History buff. There's a good chance I know more English History than I do American history! Hopefully, you will come to Nashville, Tennessee one day. Also known as "Music City". You MUST go to a performance at "The Grand Ol' Opry". It's an American tradition & treasure. Let me know when you come & I'll treat you to a meal at either "Cracker Barrel" or "The Waffle House". I have seen where some Europeans say that American's frequent smiles are "fake". Absolutely not true! I am tempted to say---that at this point--I think it's become part of our DNA. American babies practically come into the world smiling---and continue to smile often throughout their entire lives. It's a normal response to others---a way of saying "Welcome--I am happy to meet you". Sure, we have a few grumpy people here and there--but they are a minority. I know this as a fact, because I meet hundreds of strangers every week through my customer service job in a large corporation. People APPROACH you--with a smile on their face. Strangers on the street give you a smile as they pass by you. Some like to say that among store/restaurant workers, it's fake--to gain tips. Again, not true. Many workers who interact with customers--receive no tips whatsoever--and still display a natural, smiling approach as they greet customers. We are friendly even when we have nothing to gain from it. Maybe people who live in countries where it's not like this, have a resentment because they don't experience this--so it seems unreal to them. When we are in line (a queue?) we strike up conversations with the strangers around us. Some countries find that strange? The fact that some consider that strange---seems very strange to me. I say to them..... Lighten up people! Don't take yourself so seriously! We're all passing through this life together--and a little warmth and friendliness can go a long way in a world that can sometimes seem cold, lonely and harsh. We need to spread some light, love and cheer to our fellow man. It makes life more pleasant in spite of what we might be going through. A major regret in my life will be for all the wonderful people I will never get to meet during my lifetime. So I will always continue to say...to every stranger I meet..."Hello, I am happy to meet you.....with a SMILE ♥

Yes they are...HOWEVER, it is okay for you to split your meal in half, ask for a To-Go container, and finish the other half later. All hotels here have small refrigerators and microwaves, as well as a coffee pot/coffee in your room. You will not "pork out" (gain weight) if you watch your portions. You get to taste it, and then if you liked it, there is more for later. If your meal, for instance, is $14.00...that means it is only $7.00 if you get 2 meals out of it.

15:02 - There's a trick you can do to help control your dreams. Every time you wake up, consciously ask yourself, "Am I dreaming?" If you make this a habit, then when you dream, you'll also ask yourself if you're dreaming. Once you know you're dreaming, I won't say you fully control the dream, but you can influence it. It won't help you dream more though. However, most of the time we forget our dreams immediately upon waking up, so we think we dream less than we actually do. This is also why writers often keep pen and paper by their bed and write down whatever they can remember immediately, before they forget.

Lewis if you’re not an experienced horse rider you should consider going on a trail ride. It’s for inexperienced riders. They will put you on a saddled trail horse, teach you the basics of directing your horse, and you will go on a leisurely ride somewhere scenic-along with other people. Trail horses are trained to be gentle, put up with fumbling directions and know the route so you’re not going to get off the trail. Maybe someone will meet you and go with you so you have company. I would offer but I’m old and my back can’t take riding anymore 😢.

That's a wonderful idea! I'm too old and out of shape to ride any more too - and I'd doubt he'd make it out to Oregon his first time. But trail rides are one of the most fun experiences you can have in wilder places, even if it's only a couple of hours. I was in 4-H so rode at home, but my family drove all over the West on vacation. Two places we went on trail rides were in Kanab, Utah, and Jackson Hole, Wyoming. Completely different experiences, both a blast.

I stayed in England for 3 weeks. I loved it but I was happy to come home. There’s a lightness about America that I never realized until I went away for a significant time and returned. We are very blessed and unfortunately many Americans don’t realize it.

We could simply do a pass you across America program. You could see it all from the cities to the farms, but it would certainly take much longer than two weeks.

Alcohol in grocery stores varies by state, but beer is almost always sold, unless it’s a dry county. Wine is sometimes available, hard liquor is often not sold in grocery stores and you have to go to a dedicated grocery store. But some states do allow hard liquor to be sold everywhere. The big coffee cylinder containers are usually in convenience stores and offices. Workers keep them full. You fill your cup from the cylinder instead of a pot. There is usually flavored creamers and types of sweeteners you can add to your cup.
