You were correct in realizing that the American troops had no choice but to surrender, due to the water situation. They didn't expect the Japanese to so brutally mistreat them as badly as they ended up doing because of the 1929 Geneva Convention on the humane treatment of POWs, which the Japanese had signed. What the American troops didn't take into account was, while the Japanese signed the 1929 agreement, they failed to ratify it. The Japanese used this as an excuse to violate the Geneva Convention at every opportunity.
@@ethanwilliams4559 you can sum that up in most modern conflicts. Ukraine. Israel. Korea. Iran. How many times have people who never experienced the atrocities these regimes create, the ones who cry for "peace" and "diplomatic solutions" while in the comfort on their own homes in more civilized nations. Meanwhile the ones who suffered are mostly dead or dying, silenced by those who side with the attacker or worse, side with isolationism.

Re: Surrendering to Japan I've not read deeply on this topic, but my understanding is that the US and others who surrendered thought they would be treated in the same manner that the US or a European power would treat a surrendering soldier. Which is generally okay treatment. The Japanese, however, saw people who surrendered as less than people because they lost their honor/face when they gave up. And so they did not deserve consideration or sympathy or basic human decency (pretty sure basic human decency was an Enlightenment idea, and the European Enlightenment didn't happen in Asia). So the things that happened to those soldiers were truly awful. And I'm pretty sure if they'd known what was going to happen, they'd have taken a chance on drinking their own urine until they could get the distillery fixed. And that applies to pretty much everyone who surrendered to the Japanese in WWII. Going down fighting was definitely preferable.
and that is 1 more reason that the sun was deployed on 2 separate cities in japan... and even after 3 days warning they did not evacuate the cities "because they thought the claims were fake"... and then "theres no way they have 2 of those weapons"...
I assure you the American GIs had zeros allusions to being treated as anything other than dogs by the Japanese. Everyone heard and knew of what the Japanese did to their pows.
@@nutterbuttergutter Okay, I just checked to find out when people discovered how badly the Japanese were treating POWs, and the reports didn't hit the US until 1943. Fort Drum fell in 1942, I believe this said. So NO, they did not know what was going to happen to them. And I will say again, I know I would rather have sat in Ft. Drum drinking my on urine than surrender into those conditions. And I am not some hardy survival nut. I just think that if I wanted to live, staying in the impervious fort and drinking my own urine, maybe going fishing or getting some better kind of water collection system going, that would be way better than surrender. Dishonorable discharge when I got back to the US would have been better than that what happened to those guys. So I have difficulty believing that they, as a group, chose torture and death over harsh conditions in a really safe location. They did not know what was going to happen to them. You get similar stuff on the island with the contractors that was actually winning, and then the commanding officer ordered surrender. Because I know if Bataan Death March were any kind of possibility, I would be selectively deaf from all the gunfire and keep fighting. Because fighting to the death is a much better end. and has a better possibility of me living. Again, I really don't believe the American GIs picked "tortured to death" over "dying on your feet with a gun in your hand." And the dates seem to back me up.
@@andrian_syah1430 The US and others got some picture of what the Japanese were doing to POWs in 1943. Ft. Drum surrendered in 1942. They would not have known.
I know the British had their own equivalent to USS No-Go in HMS Diamond Rock when the Royal Navy commission an island into a stone frigate which proceeded to be a pain in the butt for the French!
The Fat Electrician has done a handful of videos on British heroes in WWII. The two that come to my mind are the one about the Mosquitos and the guy behind them, the one about the pilot with no legs, and the one about the guy who invented modern tank warfare.
Just watched this video earlier. I saw you did a reaction and had to see your take on it. Great job, sir! You really need to come to America and experience life here. Love your channel!
11:37 yeah, it is said that the Japanese were actually worst than the Nazis. Look up Japanese WW2 experiments and WW2 Japanese Cannibal incident were they ate captured us pilots alive, not because they had to but they believed it word give them the strength of the pilots/warriors
The reason why it was called the USS no-go is because it looked like a boat it even had battleship like components on there like the big 14-in gun turrets and the cage mast watchtower
3:42 him- what boats are passing this Island that it needs guns this big? Me- obviously none, that's the point. 14:00 3 or 4 items into that list and I realized they're gonna turn that bunker into a barbecue and/or literal bomb 🤣. I've been raised around veterans and have a dark sense of humor, I also love and understand how engineers think. ❤ #Michigan I would also like to point out that I think that this surrender happened early enough in the war that it was not well-known or known at all yet what happened to POW's taken prisoner by the Japanese.
I saw the Aldi one (and yes, we all can it Aldi's) and it was actually very interesting. I had NO IDEA there was so much thought put into the design. Will definitely watch your reaction 😉
Although Fort Drum was marked as a historical landmark in the Philippines along with Corregidor, it was never restored. All of the remaining ammunition that’s in the 14 inch guns are still there and the guns are rusting away or being illegally taken for scrap.
They aren't "boats," they are "ships." ***Except*** submarines, they are called "boats," and anything under ~ 200ft is also known as a boat, for example, a "PT Boat."
I’m glad you do reactions to the fat electrician. I watch all his videos and then I enjoy watching others react to hearing these crazy stories. Especially when told by him cause he is the best story teller.
"No-Go" isn't because it didn't see action, but because it's stationary. It's why the Chevy Nova didn't sell well in Mexico. The Mexicans mistook "Nova" (when a star explodes) as "No Va" (meaning "doesn't move").
11:54 Surrender or not, the result would be the same- death. Either by dehydration(broken water purifier) or by surrendering to the Japanese who mistreated/killed them
I typically love yo watch these reactions, however his video came out just over 3 hours ago, it's crazy to think your already reacting to it when there are other videos you could react to on his channel.
For the most part the reason it seems like its always the US boats that get attacked is because American boats/ships are basically the only US property that the enemy can reach.
I get that they don't teach much about the Pacific Theater in Europe, but it was like the Japanese and the Germans had a contest to see who could commit the worst war crimes.
Still no go in WWII, don't forget its an island not a ship, it just has some of the largest ship guns ever made. its funny they say it would be impossible but the plans exist and it was done once. Its just who would be bat shit crazy enough to rebuild something that was so hard to destroy when they had to.
A lot of those guys didn't know the brutality they would endure in the Japanese prison camp system Japan did sign the 1929 Geneva convention but they didn't ratify it and so they believe they were justified in treating prisoners however they wanted
I absolutely love the Fat Electrician but I have to disagree with his blasé assessment regarding General MacArthur. MacArthur wanted desperately to stay with his troops on Corregidor; however, seeing as how he was vehemently important to the American war effort in the Philippines and the South Pacific overall the president himself Theodore Roosevelt gave him a direct order that forced him to leave his post on Corregidor and move himself and his command staff to Australia. MacArthur hated being forced to do this so bad that he swore to his men and the people of the Philippines that he would return to free them. He would go on to do just that in October of 1944.
11:48 so, nobody knew how bad being a Japanese pow was until after ww2 started. They were not expecting to be getting tortured and starved to death. They figured that they would be used for later and maybe some other stuff but that's it. Nobody knew how bad it really was. I recommend watching, unbroken
The leadership of Japan did not carry anything about human life. They told their own people to fight to the death or commit suicide. This is how evil the roots of Japan is. In the American prisoners in Japan were treated better than some of the other countries prisoners. Absolutely horrific!
No, they weren't necessarily "told to". They voluntarily did it. They lived by a code of honor called bushido or "the way of the warrior." In that code, it was shameful and the biggest dishonor to surrender during battle. At the time, their soldiers still lived under the samurai way of life, and would commit seppuku if they lost their honor. Seppuku is ritual "self deletion" and was seen as a way to regain their honor.
They didn’t surrender cause they were running out of water it was a distillery that broke it made alcohol he called it “clean drinking water” sarcastically
This guy is just a content leech. He skips adreads (even if they're on NEW videos and still relevant), and sucks off ad revenue from other content creators. A disrespectful toerag.
You should check out EKOL they make UK compliant blank firing semi autos that you can have shipped to your house I'd love to see your reaction having a "range" day and I'm sure a ton of others would too
Oh my gosh this goes back with America since before 1800! George Washington was our first president and commanding general during the revolutionary war, and he couldn’t stand pirates and started building a navy . Our third president and second vice president Thomas Jefferson put it to good use because he hated pirates!!! The fourth president just happened to be from Virginia also like George Washington and Thomas Jefferson, and was best friends forever with Thomas Jefferson, and he hated pirates.!!
Ya'll that react to his videos keep pausing at his outro to make your own outro. You're missing the last part of his video and last bit of his information.
It's a wonder that the Japanese didn't set off the fuel that the Americans dumped into the fort. You would've thought they would have, given how they practiced kamikaze. There would've been a chance that they could've taken out several Americans on the fort if they did.
@@L3WGReacts I did like his closing comment about how he won't be surprised when our next conflct will be because someone messed with our boats. People never learn! 😂
No-Go because it's stationary. Japanese were not that keen on basic human rights. And they tended to be vindictive. And did not 'respect' anyone who surrenders.
Yeah I always wondered why we surrendered in the pacific ever most of them were killed in captivity I would have rather fought and died fast then what happened to them even the survivors
I like your videos and have watched a number of them. However I'm also familiar with the fact that a lot of reactors will wait a week or so to let the original video get the views it's going to. I have no idea if you've spoken with TFE, and if you have I apologize for the rant, but at the end of the day I'd like to see him get the views and credit for his content that it's going to get. Then re-watch his content a little later with you reacting after I've had some time to absorb the initial video.
Unfortunately, The Western world made false assumptions concerning Japanese mercy. If they had known what was going to happen they might have not surrendered.
Okay I love fat electrician for sure so I get doing reaction videos on his stuff, but isn’t it kinda un-tasteful for you to use his whole video as your content literally 2 hours after it came out? I just watched Nick on his own channel, why do I want to immediately watch him on yours, with most creators I would just unsubscribe and leave quietly but I liked your content when it seemed like yours, the trying American snacks was great watching honestly, so I’ll at least tell you why I’m leaving in hopes you will read this and use as constructive criticism to better your channel. Cheers!
