Britain’s Conservatives Are About to Lose Big

Parliamentary elections on July 4th look bleak for Britain’s ruling Conservative Party. The Tories will almost certainly lose power for the first time in 14 years. And lose big. Polls show they could see the largest swing between the main parties in modern history. Rishi Sunak could possibly become the first sitting prime minister to lose their own seat in a general election.
So what have Conservatives done wrong? What has Labour done right? And as 2024 repeats 2016 with another pair of pivotal U.K. and U.S. votes, what can Americans look to learn from Britain?

It's hard to a US audience to realise that the UK is pretty poor, has large wealth inequality and inequality in opportunity. The fact that some people are going to food banks to help serve their needs has become more visible. There is a feeling nothing really works any more, from trains to basic water treatment. Privatisations haven't worked out. The NHS has be underinvested in for years and has fallen behind. The country never really recovered from the 2008 credit crisis. With Brexit, growth is poor. Covid saw a massive amount of money end up in the hands of the rich who put it into assets. It's a big mess. If Labour can't handle the scale of the problems, then the way will be left open for ex bond trader 'man of the people' Farage.

The UK is really rich, but most of the people are poor.

Privatisation was never going to work. It’s a short term money grab that ends up costing the taxpayers billions to bail out. As bad as government can be at managing critical services, the private sector is even worse.

Labour have to make it work or it could be the end for them too, in this modern age there is a growing momentum of people who want to remove the establishment order of the self-serving political class. This is looking to start next week with potentially the end of the Tory party as a majority power forever, don't think it'll end there either. If Labour prove themselves to be just as corrupt as the Tory party don't think 5 years from now we wont see a Labour annihilation too and finally the end of the 2 party system and potentially the end of first past the post. People aren't rejecting conservative values, they're rejecting an elite class of politicians, once they realise Labour also represent that, the game will be over.

There is far more abject poverty in the USA than in the U.K. .

Well as a Brit listening to that even I am depressed the likes of Farage are still rated. Plus the import from the US if gender wars is pretty disgusting 🤮

Farage is just a Tory with no filter on his mouth. If you don’t like him, get rid of the Tories.

A good, informative listen - with just the facts. Pity that most here in the UK won't hear it.

I've been following the election jabber over here since it started, and this is a great 'broad strokes' summary of what's going on - from a safe distance, so to speak.

Why would anyone do that? ... the Tories have been terrible for the country over the past 14 years ... and you think the answer is to vote in even more right wing party?? Reform are just Torys on Acid ...

lol yeah sure vote for nationalism exactly what the Nazis said too. Your leader says he’s for D-Day and then spews the propaganda of an autocratic. Sad day for the British education system.
