Return to the Falklands (2006): Twenty-four years after Argentina invaded the Falkland Islands, the scars still run deep. Britain spends approximately €150 million a year defending this windy outpost.

"Argentineans have a deep obsession with the Falklands Islands. It's like the Jews with Jerusalem", explains Esteban Hubner. He's visiting the islands for the first time with Falklands veteran Sergio Delgado. But Islanders are still bitter about the invasion. "I was furious. How dare they come and invade us!" states Trudi McPhee. Previously, Argentina offered the Islanders financial incentives to recognise its sovereignty. Now it's taking a much harder line. "They're putting pressure on us in every possible way, interfering with the fisheries and flights", complains McPhee. Fortunately for her, Britain has no plans to withdraw.

@ Nacho Ferraro You are mistaken inasmuch as when the Royal Navy returned to the Falkland Islands with two vessels in December, 1832 (Port Egmont) and January, 1833 (Puerto Louis) to re-assert the 1776 British claim of sovereignty over the whole archipelago, they did NOT expel the existing population, consisting mainly of gauchos and fishermen. In fact, the British Captain of HMS Clio, James Onslow, encouraged the gauchos to stay, paying them in silver coins for stores and provisions, since they had not been paid by Luis Vernet, the islands' so-called governor who had been appointed by the government of the United Provinces of the Río de la Plata in 1829 but was officially disputed by the then UK government. This is a matter of historical record, and both British and Argentine sources confirm this at the time.

@@kurt44mg42 the islands were occupied by continental people way before our Independence in 1816. The islands were considered part of Viceroyalty of Rio de LA pLATA, established by Spain in 1776 in Buenos Aires AND SO when the independence came in 1816 they were passed to Argentina. Still under argentine control in 1833 when they were effectively occupied by force by the british. This is a fact. English vessels may have visited the islands. Also may want to investigate what the ''invasiones inglesas'' of 1806 and 1807 are, back when Argentina was a colony two attempts were made to invade Buenos Aires coasts. First invasion in 1806 led by John Withelocke and scond in 1807 by William Carr Beresford. Both failed, resisted by the militia and civilians, and regiments such as Regiment of Patricios which is still in service. Britain would fight Argentina again in 1845 (Batalla de Vuela de obligado). It is aprox. in the same period that britain occupied the islands and also many colonies in all the world. You can analice all isolated as many prefer, also thewar in 1982, or instead note that the crown relyies in their navy as a matter to gain strategic situated places, and also should investigate what are the uses of these lands. The british do not stay there simply to protect the population. The british claims of soberany are backed only by saying ''it is her majesty territory'', as any lands the majesty points are british. Even at the otrher side of the world. No one all these british people got there at 11000 km except to back the colonization. The referendum of course will say they want to be british, but simply because they are the sons and grandsons of people brought there! what they can say if not that? Plus all the economic stuff and that the british media demonize the Argentine... see dozens of veterans visit the islands and they get to film the journey of a Argentina's veteran who, by coincidence is against Argentina's claim! Seriously. But I know the documental is good enough for the british as only a few of them understand spanish, and their knowledge of the war events and history is heavily modified in favour of Englands posture. Therefore most think they have a more or less consistent idea of malvinas and the story around, and should not be blamed, there is no option. The winning side often dominates the most difused account of events. Spanish is a difficult language just like English and many others. As for the self determination. England did not care for self determination during 200 years when occupied 90 territories in the world, and changed their flags, language and took control of their resources. England during all that time had its navy and mercenaries searching the world for lands and resources. And now is the first country to demand respect to self determination (?) MANY BRITISH say ''the argentine educate, adoctrinate the children in the schools, saing that malvinas are argentine''. (??) First of all, all government in the world have a vote on the education of children of their territory, letsbe honest, education is not innocent of strategic issues, specially in the UK, i could say the same ''british are adoctrinated thinking hte Falklands are theirs''. Or that in all wars they THINK they were the ''good ones'' and that it was all ''to free people'': the police of the world toghether with the US. By coincidence these are the countries that in the end put hands over the resources. The fact uk does control the islands does not ban the others to think differently. OR that as any independent country, we have right to think differently and state a claim, specially when you have so many reasons to think the Malvinas are argentine or should be. At least consistet compared with ''it s her majesty's territory''. Chile was an ally of Great Britain during the 1982 war. Chile was ruled by a bloody dictator, Pinochet, but Great Britain had no problem in accepting their help, ironically at the same time they were fighting other dictatorship.

starlight122012 you have limited understanding on the falklands campaign and the importance of the Islands. 1) It is British sovereign territory. 2) It is British sovereign territory. 3) The rio de la plata did not contain the falklands because the spanish did not want it and at that time the french did not want the other island which they HAD been based on in the early 1800's 4) The Argies educate their children that because its on their continental shelf its theirs, if that is the case, we own most of Europe. 5) Its a good refualling station when we are sinking or forcing the sinking of German Battle cruisers such as the Graf Spee. 6) Its a good place for fishing and penguin sighting! lol 7)The following is very true because of the position of the sandwich islands, south georgia and the falklands mean the fundermental influance to the antartic. It means that we have access and sovereignty to parts of it. This is why the argies invaded it I believe. 8)The argies gave salvation to all of the Nazi's in WW2, there are stories they lived on there and grew. 9)The commercial fishing and oil rights out way nearly everything if you want fuel in your car and money in your bank account. 10) It is British sovereign territory and as such like Malta which was the key ingredient in WW2, If we were to just give it up, other places and Islands would follow. 11) Did I say it is British Sovereign territory. 12) I wish you a very merry Christmas. But please let's not forget that many men from both sides, fought, were injured or lost their lives over these islands! Some still live with the physical and mental scars of this conflict.. Even though I am also an Australian, I was disappointed by the slightly sarcastic and disrespectful attitude of Eric the journalist. This was a matter of principle. A group of peace loving sheep farmers were invaded by armed thugs. The relative economic values and outputs do not change that. The repeated description of both countries being democracies is misleading to the point of brain washing. There is almost no reasonable comparison between the UK, Argentina, or Australia. I can speak out about the government openly, associate with whom I please openly, join or even start my own political party, write an opinion freely, all of which can be done without being arrested, tortured, or having large numbers of friends simply disappear. Argentina has a sad, but extensively documented history of political violence, oppression, and dysfunction in the peaceful rule of law.

Argentina still has not recovered from losing one third of its strength in the Falklands War. Its inventory includes a number of second hand A4 Sky Hawks - which proved easy pickings for the Royal Navy Harriers - and 60s era French Mirage fighters. Furthermore, the force’s leadership is suspect. Kirchner sacked the top 17 air force generals in 2005 for involvement in drug trafficking. Getting war planes past the Royal Navy would be a challenge. In the South Atlantic, the Royal Navy deploys at least one of the new Daring Class Type 45 destroyers. Doesn’t sound much; but with each one capable of tracking up to 1,000 targets from 400Km simultaneously and engaging up to 300 targets in layers from 120 km to 30 km (provided the targets are larger than a tennis ball) simultaneously, it is the equivalent of 5 Type 42 destroyers of the type used in the Falklands War. In effect, if all the serviceable attack aircraft in all of Latin America - including Cuba - were attacking the Falklands, a Type 45 could cope comfortably. Then there are the four Typhoons based in the Falklands. With a combat radius of 100 miles, they would far outperform anything that would come their way Then they have to avoid the Star Streak missiles. Built in Belfast, Star Streaks travel at more than Mach 3 - three times the speed of a SU 24. My money would be on the Star Streaks. For the sake of argument, what if the Royal Navy was accounted for by the Argentine Navy? With 17 war ships, including four destroyers, and three submarines the Argentines have again - on paper - a threat to the Royal Navy and the Falklands. But, again, that is where the threat ends. On paper. The bulk of the navy is confined to port because of a lack of spares and engine problems. The ships’ on-board ordnance is past its sell-by date. There isn’t even the money for petrol to run the engines. One of the corvettes, Spiro (P 43), is out of service having run aground. So is one of the elderly submarines, Santa Cruz. The Submarine fleet has achieved a grand total of 19 hours of submerged training since 2012 against a minimum requirement of 190 days. Training is very poor. The list of disasters is endless. The Sarandi - one of the destroyers - managed to damage the Brazilian Frigate Rademaker by firing on her during joint naval exercises, injuring four Brazilian sailors and an Argentine observer when her fire control system went haywire. The Destroyer Santisima Trinidad capsized and sank at anchor due to poor maintenance. And that is all before the Type 45s even turn on their defence systems against ships up to 40 years old and with the RN’s submarine fleet not even considered. NOTHING TO WORRY ABOUT THEN, THEY ARE JUST FULL OF WIND

A cheap way to keep the Argentines in check would be to help the Chileans take a slice of Southern Patagonia - and believe me, the Chileans could do it too. Mine enemy's enemy is my friend. Britain and Chile could split Argentina's Antarctic territory between them.

+Laque Tepario It is not a question of wanting Patagonia but rather of making it clear to Argentina what it risks if it were to go to war again to seize The Falklands. Argentina has a weak point in the South and an uneasy relationship with Chile. Britain should exploit that to the full if Argentina posturing gives way to something worse.

If Argentina were to try changing its borders by force (by attacking The Falkland Islands), Chile would wonder if it were next. Remember the dispute over The Beagle Channel? Frontiers in South America are often poorly-established and there are plenty of simmering territorial disputes. Try a repeat of 1982 and the chances are that Argentine would have more than just the British to contend with. Throw British cruise missiles into the equation (something that was missing in 1982) and Argentina´s bases look very vulnerable. Add: (1) an Argentine Air Force that is significantly weaker than in 1982; (2) a small but well-equipped British airfield on the islands; (3) lack of surprise (you can be sure the British are using spy satellites and have much better ´intel´ now) and any fool (even one like Kirchner) can see that an invasion is a non-starter. It is also very likely that there is at least one British hunter-killer sub on patrol with weapons that would wreak havoc on an invasion fleet. Next time round, it would not be an old former US cruiser (the Belgrano) that goes down, it would be at least a carrier and a couple of amphibious warfare ships). Back in 1982, Britain did not use the economic weapon but if Argentine were to try another take-over of The Falklands, I think it quite likely that efforts would be made to push Argentina into debt default and another ´corralito´. Waging war requires a strong economy and a powerful industrial base and Argentina has neither.

The two ´Wars of The Pacific´ in the 19th Century and various territorial claims and counter-claims since reveal the potential for conflict in South America. Another Argentine attack on The Falkland Islands has the potential for re-opening this Pandora´s Box. The fact that Argentina finally climbed down over its claims to The Beagle Channel (the dispute with Chile) was a longer-term consequence of The Falklands War. If there were another war, Britain would not be satisfied by the ´status quo ante bellum´ - Argentina would have to pay a higher price for defeat (a ruined economy, loss of its Antarctic bases, etc.) if only to spell out the cost of future military adventures. You cannot say you have not been warned.

The inhabitants of the islands are mostly british not for a circunstance where naturally the british migrated there in more cuantities than Argentines, but becouse migrations in that colony is strictly controlled as with most colonial outpost. Britain has currently 10 territories under colonialism. Instead, in continental Argentina. We embrace bolivian inmigration that comes here in enormous numbers to have a better life than in their own nation. Did you ever heard of a Bolivian being deported by Argentina?. Without mention that many many of our shanty towns are composed mostly by Bolivian or Paraguayan inmigrants. We give them free medical service, free education, economic support, while at the same time your nation export to us many of YOUR most violent criminals. And still, you are not being deported from here. I would very much like to know if the same open arms policy regarding Bolivians are implemented in the Malvinas Islands. Even in Boliva, Argentines have more barriers to reside there than Bolivians in Argentina. Good luck.

The Malvinas was discovered by France. France sold the islands to Spain and Britain stole the islands from the Spanish. The North Americans murdered the native Indians in America and the Australians murdered the native Aborigine people of Australia.

The HMS Antelope sunk by Argentina A Type 21 Frigate was protecting the entrance to San Carlos Bay when she was bombed by Argentine Skyhawks on May 23. A 1000 pound bomb crashed through Antelopes’ starboard side but didn’t explode. More Skyhawks attacked, another bomb penetrated the ship’s side, again, not exploding. Then one of the Skyhawks was hit by gunfire from Antelope and crashed into the ship’s mast. The ship then sailed to sheltered waters and while defusing the bombs, one of them exploded. The crew were ordered to abandon the ship and just minutes later, the missile magazines exploded. The next day the ship broke in two and sank.

I don't disagree... but I would like to point out that for some time British ships were not allowed access to Brazilian ports and harbours. HMS Gloucester was turned away at the time. And more recently several nations; Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay; decided that any boat flying the falklands flag would be refused entry.
@bannon1000
@bannon1000 9 лет назад
peuterschmidt yes but that is a token silly gesture, trade remains unaffected and under 0.5% of our shipping docks there so it has no impact on our navy....and all the ships have to do is fly the red ensign or UK flag and they can dock as normal.....so its a useless gesture, and our warships travel with supply vessels that provide all they need so its a worthless gesture.
@bannon1000
@bannon1000 9 лет назад
peuterschmidt So if we want to dock there and we have no need to at all then we simply fly the red ensign and there is no issue.....and remember HMS Dragon our newest £1 billion destroyer is in chile right now visiting so why do we need to dock any where else?????

HMS Coventry sunk by Argentina A Type 42 Destroyer was assigned an anti-aircraft role. On May 25, she and HMS Broadsword took position north west of Falkland Sound to divert the attention of the Argentine Air Force away from San Carlos. On the same day, the two ships came under attack by Skyhawks. Coventry was hit by three bombs of which two exploded on her port side. The ship immediately headed to the port but severe flooding forced the crew to abandon the ship. In less than half an hour, she turned over and sank north of the Pebble Island.

The British first settled a port on the Falklands in 1776. Argentina who was a Spanish Colony who in turn stole the land from it's original inhabitants such as the Puelche, Querandí, Serranos, Tehuelche , Mapuche, Kom and Wichi. All these people lived here before the 1552 invasion by the Spanish. Now Argentina who did not really become a country until 1818, Claim the islands belong to them. You base your claim on that is it part of your continental shelf. Don't you think that the inhabitants who live on the islands have a greater claim ? You claim that Argentina is your land because you inhabit it but you invaded that land so it we give the Falklands back, You in turn leave South America and go back to Spain. You have as much claim on the Falklands as you do the land you call Argentina.

tarsung Well said about the double standards. Argentinians constantly moan about how GB "stole" the Falklands but they stole Patagonia from the indigenous natives during the Conquest of the Desert in the 1870s & 1880s (well after GB first occupied the Falklands). They're so proud of the amount of natives they killed and displaced that they even commemorate it on their money. Funny how they never say that, because Patagonia wasn't part of the territory when they "inherited Spain's rights", it should now be given back.

The Falklands Islands, one of the last tiny remnants of what was the world's last great Imperial Power, the country of Great Britain.Ironically WWII was fought due to Germany, Italy and Japan attempting to seize territory throughout Europe, Africa and Asia.Yet even at their height of expansion, the three countries put together never came close to the lands stole and occupied by Great Britain prior to the war.I look at the occupation of Falklands as a life raft for the citizens of Great Britain after the Muslims complete their demographic and cultural conquest of the country.Don't tell the Muslims about all the sheep in the Falklands or they will follow you down there to rape you're sheep too.

This documentary is very misleading when it says the islands have "no importance." @poppedweasel
@poppedweasel 6 лет назад
Like they would know! Malvinas is a bastardized Spanish understanding of the French name for the islands, The Malouines, as France were the first to settle them, followed by Britain. I tried some online translators for Malouines and they interpreted it as Falklands. I guess it would be wise to ask a Frenchman for the etymology.

@@poppedweasel I understand that the French sailors who first discovered or settled the Islands were from St Malo, in France, and they named the Islands in honour of their home port. They were not, however, the first to record discovery of the Islands. It was, in fact, an English Captain who made the first certain recorded sighting of the Islands. He named the sound between the main Islands Falkland Sound in honour of his Patron and the name eventually spread to the Islands themselves.
@poppedweasel
@poppedweasel 5 лет назад
That's right, Captain John Strong made the earliest recognized recording of the islands. 9:32 - It was an Argentine weapon! Both sides were using FN-FAL derivatives of Belgian armaments manufacturer Fabrique Nationale de Herstal (FN) model The Fusil Automatique Léger ("Light Automatic Rifle") or FAL. Argentines produced locally under license the model FN-50-61 known as the FM FAL, for the "Fabricaciones Militares" brand name and the acronym FAL known as "Fusil Automático Liviano". It is produced with the full auto fire option. The British version on the other hand is also produced locally under license as L1A1 Self-Loading Rifle, also known as the SLR. This version is semi-automatic. Interestingly enough, the full auto while appealing but it was hard to handle. The L1A1 COULD be made to fire automatically too - all it required was a piece of paper/card placed strategically and it fired on auto - BUT firing a 7.62mm on AUTO with that length of barrel, its handling is just as unwieldy as the Argentine variant.

Pay in the Falklands is low by UK standards - the average income is £20,100, compared to £26,500 for UK full-time workers. It also varies, depending on where people live. The census points out wide inequality of earnings too: almost half of all residents (49.2%) report an annual income of less than £15,000 (with almost 12% reporting income of less than £5000). Most retirees report incomes of less than £15,000 per annum, however fully two thirds of all persons reporting incomes of less than £15,000 per annum also report that they are employed

+rcx8666c But their pay is ENORMOUS compared to what Argies get paid. All the incomes you mention are far, far greater than the pittance Argies are paid.....perhaps why the Islanders are one of the regions wealthiest communities.

Britain's 'forgotten' invasion of Argentina Britain-Argentina It's 200 years since Britain's invading army was routed from Buenos Aires - a mere footnote in British history, but, says military historian Peter Caddick-Adams, a historic event in the forging of friendship between the two countries that eclipses the Falklands fall-out. We are now marking the bicentennial of the Reconquest of Buenos Aires by Argentine forces from the British in 1806 and the Argentine ambassador to Britain Federico Mirre is hosting a memorial.

bannon1000 Britain is being sued by 14 Caribbean countries demanding what could be hundreds of billions of pounds in reparations for slavery. Around 175 years after Britain freed its last slaves in the West Indies, an alliance of Caribbean nations is demanding to be repaid for the 'awful', lingering legacy of the Atlantic slave trade.

Argentina to take legal action against UK for Falklands drilling Buenos Aires is looking to sue London for British firms' exploration in the Falklands, as two companies announce they have discovered valuable reserves....Argentina has announced that it is planning to take legal action against the UK for its oil exploration around the Falkland Islands. In a day of heightened anti-Britain rhetoric, President Cristina Kirchner also scoffed at Britain’s reinforcing of the islands’ defence - and urged Britain to spend its money instead on ending unemployed people’s reliance on food banks.

+rcx8666c There is no basis fr legal action so whilst her empty and meaningless nonsense impresses you lot at home in reality nothing has been done about because nothing legally can be done it is just noise.

Thanks for that. Though most of it is wrong. The Magna Carta is an English document, not a British one, and the Vikings and Danes were the same people. Were you really 'just being nice', or had you not had time to 'read it on wikipedia' when you wrote your first comment?

@goldenrocket86 And the million dollar question....As you do not recognize the islanders chosen, freely elected representatives....Whom exactly do you plan to talk with? Could you tell us in the UK, many of us are rather puzzled whom exactly you want to discuss the islands with as you do not recognize the people the islanders elect to speak for them.....???????
