I worked on the Tyne Tunnel maintenance crew in the early 80's and the Pedestrian Tunnel came under our maintenance crew as well so would go over from the road tunnel to carry out maintenance tasks there from time to time.

In the mid 70"s I lived in Walkerville and worked in Hebburn. The simplest way to cross the river was to bus down to the pedestrian tunnel every morning and walk through to Jarrow and on to Hebburn. Reverse journey in the evening. I didn't have a bike and it was much easier walking than using a car. So, for a period of about 2 years I walked back and forth through that tunnel twice each day. It was and probably still is remarkably convenient. It kept me fit and only took just over an hour each way.

The escalators are the longest wooden escalators in the world. I thought you would have showed the tiles at the midpoint demarking the old boundary between Durham and Northumberland.

That’s a good fact! I realised I missed the mid point upon reviewing the footage. Should have stopped there really! Too busy free wheeling through the tunnel

2nd longest in Europe, to the Moscow underground. There was also a short one in Northumberland street, since removed.

I love cycling through the tunnel -- it feels as though you have a consistent wind blowing across your face; even though the air is a "constant block"

Went through on foot the other day, them wooden escalators are still out of action, leaves all down them as the wind has blown all the rubbish indoors. Looked totally abandoned, lots sealed off by workmen. Crikey, steep running up and down them :D

That's for showing us that. Cycling in 25c is hard work? That's winter here :) A bit of an open ended question, but would those places still usually be easy to cycle in December when I'm visiting?
@JordanReeve
@JordanReeve Год назад
They should be fine to cycle. Providing there’s no frost. Only thing to look out for is icy patches on the winter mornings. But able to cycle 99% of the time.

you just end like that, with no chips

Ahaha, the chip shop had closed by the time I got there. One unhappy man

Great to bump in to Jordan today whilst out cycling through the Ouseburn. Jordan was busy filming for his next video .... A big thank you to Jordan for spending a few minutes chatting about his channel. Great to see your recent emphasis on sustainable transport, Jordan, especially cycling as an efficient and low impact way of getting about

A really great video - thank you! I also really liked the tiles. I've never used the tunnel so it was all fascinating for me. I once cycled down to Tynemouth along the cycle track and then got the ferry over the river and back on the south side, though....

I’ve always known that it was there but have never seen inside of it. Thanks for taking us through it Jordan. It’s a lovely bit of architecture and engineering. The London tube station that had the fire was Kings Cross in 1987 and quite a few people perished, so I don’t envisage that escalator ever being used again.
@JordanReeve
@JordanReeve 2 года назад
Glad you like it! And that’s the one I was thinking about in London
@ashleyhoward8926
@ashleyhoward8926 9 месяцев назад
The wooden escaletor is not inherently dangerous at all, it is the years of litter thrown beneath it & which is so easily ignited by discarded smoking materials. A failure to clean up led to the high fire loading in the early stages. Cost cutting on cleaning & maintenance, rather than any design flaw was the problem. It cost Station Officer Colin Townsley his life.

Was questioning wheter to leave the whole clip of the tunnel in. But thought it was best to show its entirety
