The Shields ferry is a vital link between North and South Shields. There are very few crossing points on the Tyne between the river mouth and the very congested crossings at Newcastle. At a time when pollution charges are being considered for the Tyne Bridge and Central Motorway area, its vital that pedestrian crossings on the river are protected. Good job Jordan highlighting the issues. The proposal to move the terminal on the north side to the fish quay is controversial though to say the least.
Hope they get the funding. This is a vital link and to lose it would be disasterous. I can't imagine having to get a Metro all the way via Newcastle or even a direct bus via Tyne Tunnel would be a much longer journey.
Of course mate you missed (likely cos you are young) the biggest moment in a Tyneside ferry’s life - the shootout by Michael Caine and some other crim types on the actual ferry and dock in the early 1970’s movie Get Carter. Get it and watch it - set around Newcastle and Gateshead. Lots of classic shots of a now gone Newcastle.
Another very informative video Jordan, really hope this historic link isn't lost. Apart from serving the commuters that travel daily over the river, I'm sure there must be a fair few tourists that use it, especially the ones in the summer months staying in South Shields. Thank you both for sharing. Oh & on a side note although I'm not from the Northeast I am extremely fond of the Geordie accent & Newcastle in general, just a shame certain people can't be tolerant of other UK accents, or their pronunciations! Keep up the great work. 👍🇬🇧
Watching from Australia, I've noticed quite a few Newcastle relatively modest projects get cancelled after losing funding. Is that level up thing actually making a difference?
Levelling up is not really making that much of a difference. Newcastle struggles to get the national governments funding. The same as many northern cities
Lovely video, very well done, great music and I like the way you put things across. I am from Whitley Bay but used to live in South Shields but now live in Brighton. I often used the ferry ⛴️ and looked forward to the little trip. What’s the latest news ? Jon
Thanks Jon, Glad you liked the video. As afar as im aware there are no major updates with this. There is still the need to repair / replace the north shields ferry landing.
When I was a kid growing up in South Shields it was a treat and an adventure to be taken on the ferry to North Shields. The ferries were the old wide shallow draft ones and there where 2, the names escape me but I am sure one was called "Northumbria" but I may be wrong with that. Prior to the Tyne Tunnel it was the only way to get across the Tyne.
As an Australian, I am deeply offended by your use of a Koala name and picture. Your country doesn't have native koala's so stop with your cultural appropriation before attacking others!!!
