British Army 8X8 Infantry Fighting Vehicle? BOXER IFV 

The promo video was kind of funny, they show a Boxer all covered in a Union Jack paint scheme but it carries troops wearing what looks like German desert flektarn and carrying G36s.

If the Germans and Dutch like them, its usually very good.

And I thought you photoshopped the paint job... boy was I wrong.

I think the British, definitely should acquire this Vehicle. It looks like a very capable machine. But most importantly, these vehicles should only be purchased if they all have that glorious paint job. The enemy would never know what hit them.

The UK was involved in the initial development of the Boxer, it was to be a joint effort under the FRES plan but events elsewhere and a restricted budget saw us pull out. I was a bit saddened by that as it did seem to be a very promising vehicle at the time (and it has that splendidly thunderbirds element of interchangeable rear modules). So it is a good vehicle but we lost the chance to have one designed by our guys for our guys, which is a pity. Since FRES we haven't really had a Plan as such (at least not one I can see) and failure to prepare is preparing to fail. Lets hope we now concentrate on our needs. BAe seems to have decamped to the US so we are not going to be developing any British vehicles any time soon and this looks like a good option.

It seems dear chap that we are going full circle as I remember the days of old working on the likes of AFVs by the names of FERET, FOX and SALADIN armoured cars so this is nothing new for the British Army. By jove they were jolly nice to work on and even nicer to drive :).On a side note I think a condition of contract has to be that they are built in the UK.

Im in the 1st battalion Scots Guards and we just came off exercise lighting ace working with the German boxer company attached to us. The jock guards are joining the new strike brigade in 2019/20. The boxer is an unbelievable bit of kit! Compared with the mastiff, it’s leagues ahead. We definitely need this bit of kit

I'm for the strike brigades because we have needed them for a long time. However what about the main force which keeps getting cut and cut. It's about time for all round more money and soldiers for the British Armed forces

Guys I am always very happy to have Germany and the UK work together. The two countries can work extremely effective together (if no German politician is in the way) and share a lot of knowledge. I look forward to have the UK in the program and to see more developments on this extremely modular vehicle. Good choice. P.S. Update: The Vehicle will be assembled in the UK the first small batch will be done in Germany to train the British and do the knowledge - transfer. There are 2 sites in the UK where it will be built.

I worked with the brits up in Suffield, AB on an excersice in October. We were showing them how we employ our Lavs in a Mechanized Infantry role cause they were looking for a 8 by 8 and how to use it. I'm happy to see that all that information actually helped and came to use

Lithuania has ordered 88 of those with 30mm guns and anti-tank missiles. Awaiting first combat-ready units to get delivered later this year. We did actually have a bid with at least 7 participants including all current market leaders (Piranha V, Patria etc). Interestingly the Boxer was not the cheapest of the 'best value for money'. In fact it was the most expensive among the bidders and the choice was made consciously with the purpose of getting the best thing that currently exists in the market pretty much ignoring the price. Really impatient to see them in action. Those are amazing machines.

im a german student officer and i have worked alongside the boxer in exercieses. it is a magnificent vehicle, thats for sure! hope the british buy this vehicle

The 40mm is telescopic cased, not caseless . Now it might be possible to upgrade to a 40mm telescoped polymer case.

Interesting here is the fact the british actually want to use the AJAX as a multipurpose base, and the Boxer only as MIVF. Should've done it the other way around.

noticed in the promotional videos they showed the Australian version of the vehicle that we are looking at purchasing to replace the Aslav These types of vehicles have served us for over 20 years in East Timor and Afghanistan and I rock they are absolutely ideal and perfect for our top warfare and highly recommend them

Makes sense they go for this one, after all they joined the program to design and build it in the first place before leaving it so they at least have some connection to it.

They could use a 120mm mortar variety for quick artillery support. APK makes a GPS guided fuse for that caliber of mortar bomb.

I was down at bovington recently and one of the lads confirmed that we were getting the boxer. Well he did the typical "im not at liberty to say anything but we may likely be definitely getting the boxer in the near future" Little eavesdropping for you there matsimus

The Brits pulled out of the Boxer program to then design and build their own IFV. That program failed. They then came back to place an order on what we can call a German (predominantly) and Dutch designed and engineered vehicle, where they then paint one IFV in the British flag. The Poms are un-fucking-believable.

Are the MOD also not favouring the boxer as Britain was involved for the first 4 years of development and prototypes?

Its on the short list here in Oz as a recon vehicle (!). They are cheaper to run that tracks, more 'deployable' but oh so big.

If you are going to adopt it, I hope you adopt a few with a turret with a 105mm cannon. one of the best things the French have in Mali (I think) is the ERC-90 amphibious wheeled tank destroyer/firesupport vehicle.

Out of curiosity, I'm curious how strong those tires are on APCs and IFVs. How many shots from a high caliber weapon? How much can they withstand compared to a tracked vehicle? Is it worth it to use an 8x8?

This is the Thunderbird 2 of the APC world. Quick change modules for specific missions. Something that can be invested in.

The Bundeswehr adopts a close collaborative approach with main contractors which are usually a consortium anyway to make sure the vehicle is right from the get-go. This combined with the fact that the Australian Defence Force has already tested Boxer to death means there's almost zero technical risk associated with this vehicle - everybody knows what it can do. So why go through an expensive trials process to confirm what you aleady know? The British flag stunt tells me it's going to be licence built in the UK with a British gun...done deal.

Could you do a video on the Patria AMV? Im currently a conscript in the Finnish army and I work with the vehicle often. The AMOS variant is groundbreaking. Love from Finland

Fun Fact: The weapon system of the boxer wasnt completly installed in time for its first international exercise. That resulted in the Guns being replaced with actual Broomsticks for that one exercise. Luckily the Boxer was only meant to play a back role in said exercise. And damn that flag paintjob looks epic

we are up to the LAV-VII in the CAF btw, the LAV-III is only for our regular force armoured recce, (dragoons)

Could you talk about multinational training operations from the viewpoint of a normal soldier, how you prepare what happens in advance how the equipment gets to the training site, how you work together with foreign national how long it takes and how many people are involved?

Ausraliaian army is also looking at getting this lovely vehicle in oue land phase 400 project. The Boxer will replase our Auslavs and hopefully we will also get the Puma IFV to replase our very old M113 APC's. Also we will hopefully be getting some M1A2 SEP Tanks and increasing our number of tanks from a pissy 59 to 90 .

Btw the UK MoD hasn’t put out any indication that it’s interested in the German made Boxer vehicle. The UK MoD has put out 3 yearly policy papers that advocate the procurement of both 6x6 & 8x8 IFV and Scout vehicles from GDLS Europe, which would share up to 70% component commonality with the AKAX vehicles and be manufactured along side AJAX in existing facilities.

They could at least consider the options and have a proper honest competition.

I do like the red white and blue camouflage but I don't think it's very practical

General rule is that a 8x8 needs in the region of 1/3rd the logistical tail of a tracked force when deployed strategically.

Did anyone used to watch Terrahawks on British TV? Vehicle reminds me of those on the show. Were equipped with rolling robot warriors.

You mentioned the CT40 was caseless, it is actually telescopic casings, and unfortunately it's bloody useless. The first batch the were planning on sending to Bovi for testing had to be recalled by Lockheed because the electronics were outdated.

There is one very solid reason for the UK to skip the faffing about with tenders and drive offs and just buy the Boxer that seems to have been forgotten: prior to 2003 we *were* going to be buying it. We were actually the third member of the consortium with the Germans and the Dutch. Then for some (probably hare-brained) reason we suddenly decided to ditch a project which was already delivering prototypes for some nebulous concept we called FRES. Boxer ran into some issues after that which seemed to validate the UK's decision but the Germans and Dutch were receiving their first production vehicles by 2008 during which time the UK had succeeded in awarding GD a contract for Piranha Vs before going: 'yeah, nah, actually, this whole FRES thing was a bit of a parlarva, we don't want them now.' (they won Scout though, so they can't cry too hard) Boxer is indeed a great vehicle, but it's one we could have, and should have had ten years ago.

I think this is somewhat old, Matsimus. I think the Boxer was alraedy discarded due to the fact that it is wheeled and the MoD is looking for a tracked IFV to support the Challenger 2 MBTs.

You could have talked a bit more about the versatility of the Boxer. There is a video on YT where they canged the mission module and its really nothing more then a crane, some screws and some (I think it where three) plugs.

Just an idea, could you do some of the other obscured British made vehicles? like the export only Vickers MBT, or the joint production GKN Simba APC that had tons of action against ISIS in south east Asia lately?

This is actually meant to replace the FV430 series of mechanised vehicles, it not an IFV it is a APC. This is not replacing the warrior, the British would not waste £400 million on retrofitting.

Off the shelf assets makes things so much easier.

Just looked it up at the kmw website. The deal is that 100% of the final build steps are made in the UK and 60% of the whole worth should be produced in the UK means around 1000 jobs. As Plus for an early partipant in the development Artec would be allowed to export the vehicle under britisch rights.

I hope that whichever vehicle Britain selects, that it is the vehicle that best suits your needs. I think those vehicles would also need to be built in Britain for the reason of security of supply, because if a crisis occurs, logistics is key.
