@@Jabber-ig3iw They're Oshkosh M1070, according to the wikipedia page they replaced the Scammel Commander (which I think looked so cool) in 2001, so they're not that old, and they do have automatic transmissions.

In comparison to civilian trucks? Several reasons, military trucks have to pass the same inspection standards as all road transport, but they also have to be capable of severe off-roading and cross country performance, to manage this the axle ground clearance is much higher, and the wheels and tyres larger than equivalent civilian transport. On cargo vehicles (ie the soft skinned vehicles, not the tanker or the low loader) the wheel stations are located further back than on civilian trucks to increase obstacle crossing ability and aid with the turning circle. The fuel economy on these trucks does suffer, but the Army can deliver to places even Eddie Stobbard would struggle to reach.
