@joshuapeckham2453
@joshuapeckham2453 2 года назад
They have focussed on the most common jobs of those ranks - there are a myriad of other jobs out there at each rank. But in general it's pretty straightforward. Far fewer flavours of Sergeant than in the US although I think NATO grades equate our Sgt with your SSGT and our SSgt with your SFC. There's a big review of career structures currently which is asking serious questions of whether officers and SNCOs need to be posted every two years to 'gain experience' and keep the system flexible. Easy way to remember our officer insignia is that just pips is company grade; crown and pips is field grade; and sword-and-baton is general officer ranks.

@crazyade9556 2 года назад
apart from this rank structure they neglect to state that Infantry ranks makes a Sgt Inf more senior to a Sgt of other regiments, then you have the senior infantry regiments which extends to Foot Guards on wards, also the British MOD says the navy is the senior service followed by the army then air force, Officers ranks also go with their appointments, like you have Captains in Infantry Bn's, ie, incharge of a section or 2ic of a Company but the Adjutant is the senior captain, it's not that straight forward, like Corporal, can be Cpl Of Horse in the guards, Bombadier in the Artillery and so on lol

Veteran of the South African Army here. Rank structure was exactly the same. The insignia was a little different though. Officers used stars instead of pips( Although we often referred to one-pip and two-pip lieutenants.) Senior officers used a castle instead of the crown. Some minor changes were made after '94 and the castle was replaced by a protea flower viewed from the top (at least to my untrained eye that's what it looks like)

My friend, a former Cpt was changed into ME4. During my time, I became a Cpl in 10 months after gone through and passed 4 courses. If I had continued, I would be a Sgt at the end of 24 months. Yes, Regimental Sergeant Major is an appointment in a unit, the rank that qualifies for that appointment is Warrant Officer First Class. Training, length of service, competence and good conduct will get you to the rank, but not neccessarily appointed RSM. You would be promoted to that rank before you were appointed to the job and continue in the rank after completing your term (typically two years) as RSM of a unit. The RSM doesn't command a sub-unit but has a different sort of authority over all the NCOs and soldiers and is a very important advisor to the Commanding Officer on the morale and discipline of the whole unit.

British Army Rank and insignia are very Cool however I have two issues! 1. There should be no confusion as to rank and CoC (Chain of Command) i.e. clear distinction of insignia example : Warrant Officer Class 2-Monarch Crown/ Major- Monarch Crown. I believe the Crown should be reserved for Commissioned Officer Ranks therefore the Crown would be replaced with a lesser iteration of the Royal Coat of Arms perhaps minus the flanking Unicorn & Lion with the Major retaining the insignia of a Crown! In addition I would remove the bold Crown from the Colour Sergeant replacing it with a Bold Silver Pip! 2. Higher Rank should be Grander or more distinct example Brigadier : Crown, 3 Pips/ Major General: Pip over Crossed Saber & Baton, I'd feel slighted if I was a Major General standing beside any officer bearing a Crown the Remedy: Lieutenant General rank of Crown over Baton and Saber becomes Major General's Rank and Lieutenant General and General gain a Pip! In addition the Field Marshal would gain a 2nd Crown over Crossed Batons in a Wreath of Oak Leaves or a Silver Pip between the Crown & Crossed Batons or a Crown over Crossed Batons above Crossed Sabers!

Just not a political animal enough for the Warrant Officer team, bit too much snivelling to the RSM in the mess and every lunch break, didn't have time for lunch breaks in my job, and also being harsh to the men for my liking, never charged anyone and just punished them in house with duties seemed to work, admit I wasn't suitible for Sergeant Major. But I did serve in 5 decades, 70s,80s,90s,00s,10s, which is rare. 70s and 80s was RAF Regiment. I was 50 serving in Afghanistan, reading a paper, off sangar stag in full body armour downstairs, reading about the oldest serving soldier to serve there at 49,and thinking, hey. Oldest recruit to the Corp at the time at 3 weeks before my 30th birthday, actually older than all the training camp corporals and my training troop sergeant. And got and extra 30 seconds on my BFT run assessment and only person with a medal(GSM) at pass out parade. Sergeants course or SNCO cadre at 43 was pretty tough as well. I thought my JNCO Cadre at 37 was bad, it wasn't in comparison. 6 years in operational medalable danger zones. So had some minor claims to fame in a fairly unremarkable average promotion career I suppose.

I left the Army as a SSgt too, however that was my own choice and lifestyle within the organisation. I joined the infantry in 1986 and being a non drinker I didn't get pushed for further promotion even though I got promoted within the first 3 years, however it did stagnate duly because they looked at me as anti social because of my sobriety. I left in I 994, partly being convinced by my ex. So I worked abroad for 2 years and return to the UK divorced to rejoin. I rejoined my old Regiment in 1996 losing my rank and seniority and forced to complete my promotion course again. I worked my way up the ranks until I was acting Admin Troop Sgt in 2001 and decided to re trade to the Supply Controllers trade. I past my class 3 Course and was post to Germany as a Cpl in 2002. I spent the next few years getting tours around the world particularly in sandy places while fitting in all my upgrading course, specialised courses and eventually I got promoted to Sgt in 2006. I spent one year in various roles and got promoted to SSgt in 2007 and spent the final 3 years doing several courses, including my RQMS and some tours in hot places and got out in early 2010. However, I refused to get bullied or peer pressure into anything, but as the 80s and 90s passed and into the 00s I noticed the Army attitudes changed and frowned upon alcoholism particularly on NCOs and more on careers, which suited me more.

Although the ranks are similar to the German Army ranks, in Germany Brigadiers (as well as in the US) belong to the generals. The responsibilities are different as well. In Germany, a second lieutenant is commanding a platoon and a captain is a company commander. For me it was very interesting to learn something about our allies.

The official British army site lists the responsibilities of RSM (Warrant officer 1st class) as being a father figure to enlisted men and junior officers. WO2 is the rank for men wo have hsown promise and are considered for commissions, making them mentally mature and militarily expeirenced jr officers in a role where they are usually learning their way as young men.

Law Gangte. That would be an interesting video, but also difficult to be accurate. The armed forces are paid at a daily rate. Plus, any trade, or specialist monies on top. For example. In my last Battalion we had 3 warrant officers class one. First was God, sorry the RSM, the greatest equality expert, plus caring one, who gives out loud encourageable commands. Next was the ASM, REME. whom was paid similar to God, but being a specialist, got slightly more. Last, but not least WO1 Bandmaster. Same here as the ASM, gets a rate, plus trade pay. Plus, 10% of any band paid engagements on top, as well. Pay is not just daily, but always linked to time already served. Great idea. Must admit, it would make an interesting video.

I have read online that the organisation of the Ukrainian army is based on the European model, rather than the Russian. The latter is missing key ranking that makes their forces less capable. To your knowledge, could you comment on this point?
@cambs0181
@cambs0181 2 года назад
The Russian army is an autocracy not a meritocracy. As rank structure is just a vassel used to make sure orders are passed down the ranks from senior levels to the lower ranks. This means that with the absence of seniority any unit becomes almost totally ineffective. Western armies teach more on the case of leadership so NCOs and junior officers can take more responsibility in leadership and therefore units can work on a more autonomous basis away from senior officers making them more self sufficient.
