British Cinemas: A Brief History of Fun 

I loved going to the pictures. There were so many picture houses from local "Flea-pits" to the posher ones. I remember going to watch a film with my Mum and Dad once at a posher Cinema. My Mum dressed up for it. During the Intermission or maybe before the film started (was a long time ago) there was a bar. I had to sit in a corner and remember watching my Mum having a sherry. Wish these old picture houses still existed. My Father was from Plymouth so we`d often travel down that way. It was a special treat going to what I remember as being called The Drake Cinema just off a main roundabout. There was a little model Gallion underneath the signage.

What an adventure it was, going to the pictures! Those were the days.

UK cinemas are indeed great fun places to go. These film palaces once was the UK envy of the world . Sadly some are now gone and been demolished and some even worse have been so badly altered they are beyond recognition now inside and out . London does retain some fine examples still in use but again much altered over time. The West end in London does have fine buildings of film going cinemas to enjoy and we can only hope now after covid 19 virus restrictions they can survive for us to enjoy again .

British Cinemas was then real cinema going and a experience to be had because you knew you had been entertained ! Huge movie palaces of joy and acres of seats to sit in unlike today's cinemas are ! Built to entertain and last forever which sadly some have not survived time only to be bulldozed down to nothing unwanted and unloved. We should cherish what we have left and care for these buildings which stand today. Our future generations will know what we went to then and why.! Although bingo and other uses are now replacing films it's needs to be said that these once fine buildings was to show films and entertain us in a way now sadly gone into history.

Wicked but unfortunately the Wurlitzer organ at the Tooting Granada is once again flooded and unplayable. I just hope it can be restored and make lovely sounds once more.
