The A-37 Was Never Designed As A Fighter!! A = Attack, F = Fighter, B = Bomber, K = Tanker(Inflight Refueling), C = Cargo, E = Electronic(Surveillance), P = Patrol, H = Helicopter

@gk5891
@gk5891 5 месяцев назад
@Ira88881 I think you have the E3 Sentry AWACS and the E8C J-STARS confused. The E-3 Sentry was a new build by Boeing based on their 707/320 (C-137) air frame design. The E-8C J-STARS were retired Civilian 707/320 converted to the required specification by Northrop Grumman. They are much smaller than the 747 (VC-25, E-4 ) "Jumbo" air frame.

@@gk5891 I’m not confused. I know nothing about this stuff at ALL! I just seemed to recall that when the first AWACs took to the skies (ahhh, to be young again), that they looked like a modified commercial jet.

The Maryland Air National Guard flew A-37s out of Martin State Airport just east of Baltimore for several years after Vietnam. They have had a wing of the A-10's flying there since retiring the A-37's..

The A-37 Dragonfly was a very effective weapon in Vietnam, and a testament to the Air Force establishment to find innovative solutions to a very unconventional set of combat conditions. But combat situations rarely repeat themselves, and military professionals need to be flexible to seek the most effective solution to the next challenge. As great as the A-37 Dragonfly was, I don't believe it would have been effective in the combat situations the US encountered post-Vietnam. (OBTW, I'm a 30-year veteran of the United States Air Force and have flown numerous times in the the T-37 "Tweet," the trainer version of the A-37 Dragonfly).

I've been at an airshow that had either an A-37 or T-37 at it, and heard the engines spooling up. A friend of mine who had been an Air Force officer told me about the 'converter' nickname, then nodded when I added "with thrust as an accidental byproduct". Without earplugs AND headphones, I wouldn't want to be closer to one of those jets than at least a quarter mile. Though being the ear doctor for the squadrons flying them, and being their supplier for hearing aids later in life could have been quite profitable.
@jestercat7723

@@OriginalLictre Randolph AFB was my first assignment in the Air Force. It had both The T38 and the T37 trainer aircraft. I spent part of my time in pick-up and delivery (glorified delivery driver). On rare occasions we had to deliver parts to the jet engine test stand. Normally they were not testing an engine when i was delivering parts to them. One time I delivered to them they had a T37 engine on a test stand outside the building. They started it up as I was walking to the building. It went from quiet to loud to very loud to painfully loud before I made it to the building. Now they did put hearing protection headphones in our trucks since we did go to loud areas on base. But those headphones had a life expectancy of about two days before they disappeared. There were no headphones in the truck that trip.

@thomasohanlon1060 what you mean the original blueprints? When it was estimated to weigh 5000lbs and there were none built yet and they were just okaying designs to see how they perform when 1 or 2 are built?? Yea they then got battle reports from Europe and told them to redesign the whole thing based on those reports... did you know they had a lighter and faster plane that was specifically designed to be a fighter that the army shot down because they wanted this? Weird right for them to ignore the fighter plane and choose the heavy slow plane if it was designed to be a fighter right?

TFE did a video on the A1 Skyraider. Since you're interested, check it out. As for other videos of his, he has many others. My favorite is about Samuel Whitmore (angry old veteran vs 700 redcoats). Other ones you might want to check out Last War Chief, World War Tree, RAF's legless Anti-hero, or America Stole a German Uboat and Stuck it in Chicago.

ALL US Air Force pilots were trained on the T-37 (the trainer version of the A-37). It was called "the Tweet" because the high pitched whine of its engines teneded to eliminating the hearing of a ranged of frequencies of pilot's and tech's who were anywhere near it.
@grumblesa10
@grumblesa10 5 месяцев назад
This is fairly accurate. - The A37 was primarily used as "Fast FAC (Forward Air Controller)" i.e. guys who direct close air support strikes. With a secondary strike role it was also tasked with Combat Search And Rescue (CSAR) support. - The reason it was retired was NOT because the AF wanted something more expensive like the A10; it was simply because the A37 couldn't survive in a Soviet/Russian style Integrated Air Defense System (IADS). The A10 WAS designed to take hits from AAA up to 23mm, as well as MANPADS like SA7/14, and tactical SAMS like SA8/SA9 and survive. In other words, it was designed to fix the vulnerabilities of the A37. - It is still used in Central/South America because it's easy to maintain, easy to fly and has a good loiter time (it can stay on station for quite some time) and there's no/limited AAA/MANPADS threats.

I was in the service when there were still a few in active service, amazing little planes. 😊 I was stationed on a logistics and training base and part of my hearing loss is from the engines of the T37s (T for trainer) and F16s, a *22 million* dollar plane and basically a seat and a pair of wings bolted onto a giant, jet engine. 😊 One lesson learned and improvement in the A10 (we had those, too) was the thing that earned it the name "flying bathtub." After having pilots shot with small arms and machine gun fire during low altitude runs, they built a heavy, steel tub in which the pilot sits in the A10 and it made a huge difference. I really liked the Dragonflies but the A10 (in personal conflict with the F16) is my favorite plane. That said, we had an SR71 Blackbird on our base and which I got to look inside, they're like a Star Wars fighter before Star Wars was ever thought of. Incredible technology... From the 50s. A full speed, full altitude, 180° turn requires about 1/3rd of the continental US to complete. 😊

I think you misunderstand the mindset of people in the military. The opportunity to blow something up supercedes the desire for personal safety. Especially if you are talking about pilots. It is really difficult to become a fighter pilot. Those other pilots were probably climbing over each other at the chance to do combat missions, drop bombs, etc 😂
