I’m actually in marching band! Yes we do know how the pictures look! Essentially the way it works is that we memorize the music first for the entire show. Then each person gets assigned a dot. Each dot is a person. Then (some places do it differently) you get a chart showing what shapes you’ll be making at certain points. You memorize every point you’re supposed to be at on the field during the show and when, knowing exactly where you’re supposed to be is measured by the lines on the field and footsteps. So for example, my dot could be “4 steps off of the 50 yard line, stage right”. This means that from the audience, you should be on the LEFT of the 50 yard line and off by 4 steps. Once everything is memorized the last thing you need to do is put it all to the music you memorized! This shouldn’t be hard bc at this point the music you memorized is pretty much muscle memory and by the time you’re ready to put the show to music, moving to where you’re supposed to be on the field is also muscle memory. Students in marching band are often on a scholarship! We also compete against other schools bands and perform during halftime (like in the video you’re watching). I suggest you watch some HBCU’s battle of the bands if you want to watch a musical competition complete with dancing done by the dancers for the band AND the marchers. Pick ANY HBCU and you’ll be impressed!

Yes exactly. I was in marching band as well as the flag and dance team. ( also part of the band) it's been years but I was also in DCI...drum corp international which Britain had a band or two in it at one time. We all traveled the US and did nothing but practiced and competed. I loved it. And met a ton of people. I would also check it out as well. But it's high-school aged kids doing the same things before college or university. Also check out winter guards as well. It's the flag and dance teams moving and making forms to music without the band. They do this during the off season for football in high-school. Not sure if colleges and universities do this also. It's been a while for me but these things still give me goosebumps when seeing a remarkable show.

The players are, indeed, university kids. They usually are required to be in band for one of their university classes. Some of them are music majors, working on their bachelor's degree in music or music education. Our band students worked with their band teacher, their directors, to arrange the music and create the show - the physical movement of the players. We rehearsed 5 to 6 days a week and had a different show with different music every week. It is a significant time commitment, because all the students have homework, studying, and projects to do for their other university classes, too.

Being born & bred a Buckeye, they're simply referred to as The Best Damn Band in the Land. Someone needs to send you guys TBDBITL shirts :) Millie, currently there are 228 university students in the band. They have thousands apply every year. It is a huge honor to be selected to come to school there and play in the band and is just as big of a commitment as any sport. They practice upwards of 20-30 hours a week, plus are at the game on Saturday as well as playing in different festivals and parades, NFL games etc all over the country. They played the halftime show of one of the NFL games in Britain a few years ago! Last cool fact, all of the instruments are pure brass, which is unusual for any band, and they're the largest "all-brass" band in the world. The most famous thing about the band by far is "Script Ohio" which they do before every home game, if you guys want another video of theirs to react to. O-H

My son was in a band from a different college. Like you said the work they do is incredible. What makes this band so much better than so many other colleges is honestly the money the college invests in the band program. It takes big bucks to get this kind of choreography and pay for the music etc. The band is incredibly lucky. My brother was in one of the most famous marching bands, the University of Notre Dame. They practiced as much or nearly as much as the football team, 5-6 days per week. The band even has its own football field to practice on, separate from the practice field of the football team. I don't remember how large the band was 30 years ago when he was a student, but it currently has about 380 members. Every year he would need to leave home for a week after Christmas to travel to where the "Bowl Game" was being played. It was an enormous commitment.

The “opposing team” is the University of Michigan. The rivalry between Ohio State and Michigan is similar in importance to Barcelona and Real Madrid (at least in the Midwest), and their annual matchup is referred to simply as “The Game”. Michigan State (you got a hoodie of theirs!) is similar to Atletico Madrid: neither Michigan nor Ohio State considers Michigan State to be their true rival, but MSU is more than capable of humbling them both if given half a chance.

ND and USC are totally irrelevant teams that play in conferences that are a joke. The entire PAC-10 sucks. USC has completely given up on competing and can’t seem to keep a coach. ND refuses to join any legit conference despite being invited. They know that they’d be a four win team (at most) if they had to play any of the power conferences. I agree with the other commenter: Buckeyes vs Wolverines is THE Game.
@tbmaines
@tbmaines 2 года назад
USC had a great run from 2000-2010. And historically, they just played one game vs big ten teams - usually the Rose Bowl. And yes, many great teams going back into the 60s-80s. They have had some truly great teams. But, the Trojans have fallen so far from where they were. They’ve lost 3 out of 4 bowl games vs Big Ten teams going back to 2015…that single win was a 3-point squeaker vs Penn State that they survived. USC had a 4-8 record in 2021. 2020 was a truncated Covid season. 2019 USC was 8-5. 2018 USC was 5-7. These are just the facts. Sadly, I heard from an insider that the USC football program is expected to be terrible for many years to come. I really hope that isn’t going to happen, but brace yourself for more misery.
@tbmaines
@tbmaines 2 года назад
Someone dusted off their almanac. That’s cute. You can’t project continued success based on team wins that happened 3-5 decades ago. And also for a minute in early 2000s. Revel in the old days all you want. Current affairs for USC is dismal. Until they expanded out of conference schedules in the 2000s, it was the Big Ten Champ playing the PAC Ten champ in the Rose Bowl. Rarely, if ever, playing during the regular season. Loved those games. Yes, bowl games between the conferences also happened away from the Rose Bowl when the teams playing weren’t conference champs. I watch college football because I love the sport. I hope the Trojans get back to putting a competitive team on the field someday because it’s good for the conference and good for the game.

My son was part of The Ohio State University Marching Band (TBDBITL) for 5 years. What a great experience! If you do plan to see the band in person, plan to spend the entire day as a band geek. On Game Day the band reports 6 hours before kickoff - so for a Noon game, they report in full dress at 6 AM. They practice at 7:00 and you can watch this. Then there is Skull Session for the public 2.5 hours before kickoff. Mash up after Skull and before marching to the stadium. They march across the street through the crowds and enter the stadium where they interact with the crowds for a bit. Be sure you're in your seats now because you don't want to miss RAMP and Script Ohio. Seriously, go look up Script Ohio - it's fantastic! At half-time you get treated to this fantastic show and the crowd loves it! Post-game there is a brief performance and the band marches off field and into the stadium. The choreograph for this band, The Best Damb Band In The Land, is always on point! I am not musically gifted, but I have several friends that are, and one is an alum of OSU and TBDBITL. She went on a music scholarship. According to her, they practiced 25-40 hours a week depending on the time of year. They are of course most active during the fall semester. TBDBITL plays at every football game plus various parades, professional football games, sporting events, and a various events across the country each year. They practice in pretty much any weather except lightening because all of their instruments are brass. They are known as TBDBITL because they developed many techniques that marching bands across the country later incorporate into their routines.

Both my son and myself graduated from The Ohio State University. My son also was a member of the OSU Marching Band for five football seasons. I think I can accurately answer some of your questions. The band is considered another academic class., although the credit is minmal .If a student is interested, he/she signs up for he class then is automatically dropped if he/she fails to make the tryout. The Band is also known as T.B.D.B.I.T.L.,The Best Damn Band In The LAND. Each year approximately 400 students try-out for the Marching Band. Approx one half of the membership is music majors, the other half comes from all academic areas. Saturday games there are usually 228 band members total in the stadium, 194 regular band members plus the alternates who fill in in case a regular member can't make it. Also during the week an alternate can challenge a regular member for a spot in the regular band. This keeps the regular band on their toes. The man who is on the field twirling a baton is called the drum major. He is NOT the conductor. The drum major leads the band as far as marching is concerned, but has nothing to do with the music except for making routines for his twirling. The drum major pretty much does his own thing during a halftime show. There are conductors on the sidelines, usually on ladders. There have been both male and female drum majors, and women have only been allowed in the Band since the early 1970s. Tryouts are usually held in the Fall. It used to be tryouts were Mon and Tues, the new band was announced on Wed, and you were on the field on Saturday. Throughout the summer the current band members host events called "Summer Sessions" They follow a syllabus and teach all the marching and playing styles. All OSUMB members are college students. They've had senior citizens who sign up for one continuing education class to be eligible for the OSUMB. They also have allowed a student to tryout who attended a college in the area that didn't have a music program. Also, everyone tries out for the Band each year. No one is assured of a spot. The band practices every M-F, 4:00-6:00pm. Plus individual Practice sessions as called by a squad leader. The OSUMB is the largest all-brass and percussion band in the world. Their sound is well-suited for a large stadium and is instantly recognized. The band memorizes all their music. This makes it easier to play and march together. It costs approximtely $250,000 to send the band to an away game, including two Chartered jets. So they are a little picky about which away games they will go to. They always go to the bowl game that the football team gets to play in. And if the Michigan game is away,they will go to that. The Marching Band is sort of hybrid program of the University: The School of Music provides the program and faculty, and the Athletic Dept. provides the funding. (This may have changed since my latest info.) Hope you all enjoyed this. Some of my numbers may be off a bit but you get the idea.

I knew I liked you two! I was part of this show! As I recall, this was practiced for 2 weeks. The dinosaur formation was actually put in an iPad commercial. We're actually one of the smaller bands in America at 228 (we only march 192 and the others are alternates). If you're looking for more, I'd recommend the 2012 Video Game show. It was the first viral video we had. There was also an NFL performance in Wembley Stadium in 2015. Marching band is an official class of the university. We have voluntary practice sessions two days a week from June to August. Tryouts are 4 days for candidates and then 2 more with all returning members. No one is guarantees to make the band once they've made it. We do 2 hours of practice M-F. If you want to see how something like this all comes together, and what comes after, they have a documentary that goes from Summer tryout practice to the bowl game. I think 2018 is the year, 141st edition of the band. I'll add links of some of our vest hits. It makes me quite happy that these shows are still entertaining people after almost 10 years. The people leaving the field at the start of the video are the visiting team's band members. I am a 1988 graduate of the Ohio State University. I did not play in the band but am a huge fan of The Best Damn Band In The Land (TBDBITL). They draw out their show schemes using computer animation and then each band member has an ipad which they mount on their instruments during practices so that they can follow exactly where they need to be. The band is very competitive and any band member can be challenged for their spot in the band in any given week. The band does their entire pregame and halftime show across the street at St. John Arena before they go into the stadium to perform. The St. John Arena performance is called the Skull Session and it is a must see event if you have any interest in the band. I call a football Saturday at Ohio State an 8 hour band concert with football during the intermission.

You made an excellent choice of marching bands to feature. I have been a fan of the Ohio State Buckeyes for sixty years. Their band touts itself as "The Best Damn Band in the Land." Your choice of halftime show came against its main rival, whose name OSU's most famous coach, Woody Hayes, would not even say, referring to the rival as "That school up north." The most important band displays are its "Ramp Entrance" onto the field and its later nationally famous, "Script Ohio," in which the always moving band spells out the word 'Ohio," with the honored sousaphone player finishing it off by "Dotting the 'I' with two bows. I link an example of the ramp entrance followed by Script Ohio in a pre-game performance against that school up north four years ago. You'll see the energy of the Buckeye fans, precision of the band, and singing of the school fight song at the end of Script Ohio. It's always the last game in the regular season schedule and can be quite cold. In my opinion, this is Middle America at its best. Note the role of the drum major and the rise in cheers just before the Dotting of the I. Enjoy and Go Buckeyes!!!! Go Scarlet and Gray!!! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-vag6HPm9q3g.html (21 minutes --2016 game vs. the school up north; closer view) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-JI5bKX9wx6Q.html (17 minutes - 2018 game vs. the school up north, longer view)

Kids typically start learning their instruments in sixth grade with marching starting to become the focus in 9th grade. The marching bands usually perform at every home game, both from the stands and on the field during half time. My niece plays french horn/mellophone and trumpet in her marching band and it is an incredible thing to witness a group of kids learning and growing and coming together to put on shows in just a matter of days.

I was in a major university marching band many years ago. We didn’t have the luxury of computer-designed animated drills, but our era pioneered the change from military style shows to flowing, freeform drills. I remember rehearsals for the first arcs on the field. We had ski ropes measured to length, used as giant compasses to set the alignment. As a brass instrument player, I got to experience the thrill of creating that huge, exhilarating sound. No video can reproduce the sheer visceral feel of a large university band playing at maximum power. It’s incredible to do it and incredible to hear out front. I remember as a freshman the first rehearsal in the stadium. After the last note of a song was released, this shockwave echo returned from the stands and it was almost physical in its impact. Then the first halftime with the stadium full...the crowd absorbed much of the echo, but instead you heard the roar of cheering after that last note. Then you realized you’d better focus, because the next whistle was coming and you’d best not forget where you had to move. We had a unique and quite emotional harmonization of the Star Spangled Banner. I remember those pregame shows when we shook the concrete-“Oh say does that Star Spangled Banner yet wave....”- and the crowd was on its feet singing. Wow. I remember playing an exhibition at a high school band contest. The HS bands were seated in a fairly small HS stadium. We took the field, hit the first note, and in one body the HS kids leapt up and cheered. The sound was an irresistible force in that stadium. We all but knocked the bleachers down. They didn’t stand out of interest or respect. They stood because it compelled them to, an involuntary response. Such fun. We learned a new drill for each home game, all new music and marching. We did it in six hours weekly of rehearsal plus a Saturday morning warmup rehearsal at the stadium. And yes, just ordinary students. About half music majors, half anything else. My wife’s then-roommate was an accounting major who marched.
