As an American who owns a gun, I'm still freaked out about it. I've seen how people handle guns at shops and ranges. I don't trust the average person not to make things way worse with their gun. Either responding foolishly (like pulling a gun out to stop a property crime) or accidentally discharging the weapon. Again, the number of people I have seen flag entire gun stores or the firing line at a range is crazy. If I was sure people had basic proficiency I'd feel better, but in so many states people can just carry a gun without having demonstrated any ability to safely handle it.

The "beater" cars often look terrible but even in states that require a safety inspection they can get by. Since the inspection looks specifically at the "safety equipment" for instance brakes, lights, tires, glass and so on. So a missing bumper is not part of the inspection unless the lights are mounted in them. Heck I personally drove a car with a mangled front-end for 2 years since the lights were properly affixed and aligned even though the hood and fenders were out of shape and the bumper was missing.

@@carissadallke1345 Exactly, the one I was driving cost me about $650 after purchase and a few necessary repairs (radiator and some "shade tree engineering" for mounting the lights). I mean it was already 10 years old and wrecked when I bought it. I drove it for 2 years in that shape before I found a front-end clip for $200 then drove it another 6 & 1/2 years with a different colored front-end until the engine gave it up. So a grand total of $850 for 8 & 1/2 years of driving sounds alright to me. I guess that's basically $100 a year which is way less than a monthly car payment and cheap AF insurance to boot, but as mentioned above it was indeed mechanically safe.

'Beater' cars serve the segment of the market that need transportation without a giant price tag. Some people will drive their car from new until it doesn't work anymore through the beater phase of its life. Others will sell the car as it reaches that phase or before, getting some money back from the car while providing the car to another person whom the car is needed or an upgrade from what they already have (often passing their car down the chain at the same time if they are replacing).

Beaters are legal in the US. There are no inspections, apart from emissions. Keep in mind that apart from some limited exceptions, most people can't work without a car in the US. Another consideration is cars in Hawaii and near the coast rust a LOT faster. I knew a guy at work who was driving over a mountain pass in the winter, and managed to completely flip his car and hit a tree. He was super lucky, because the tree crushed in the hood over the passenger seat. If it had been the driver's side, he would have died. He was also lucky in that the car landed on its wheels. He was actually able to continue driving down the mountain and into the city after the accident. He told me a cop pulled him over and asked him if he was ok. He told the cop what happened and that he did not intend to continue using the car after he got home. The cop wished him luck and let him continue on. The car was still legal, if of very questionable reliability at that point.

Police will only stop you in the US if you have a headlight, tail light, license plate light out or missing a mirror or something. If you don't have a bumper or even a door, you're usually fine. We have jeeps here where people take the doors off and people ride around with the jeep wide open.

Re: Boxing Day, I believe (and I could be wrong) that only the UK and British Commonwealth countries, and perhaps some former British colonies and protectorates celebrate Boxing Day. It was first enacted in 19th century in Great Britain, so I believe only countries under British rule during this time recognize and celebrate it.

Beater cars are mostly only in certain states. In PA we have yearly registrations and inspections, so it is very rare to see really beat up crappy cars. However, i have a friend from minnisota and they dont have those laws so he has shown me several pics of cars you would be surprised can still drive. Lol

I live in Minnesota and had a beater. A 1990's Oldsmobile with a different right front colored body panel that was removed from an exact same model from an auto junkyard 😂 Yes beaters are a common sight in Minnesota and Wisconsin 😂

One thing about _trucks_ is that the EPA increased car efficiency standards massively, but only increased truck CAFE standards by a little bit. Automobile companies responded by making more trucks and SUVs because they couldn't make those efficient cars without raising prices significantly. So...more trucks on the roads.

I'm sure seeing someone open carry was a shock for them. Some states have it, some don't. I grew up in the country. My whole family are hunters on both sides, so guns don't shock me.

Cornhole is a pretty common game in the south. It does go by a lot of different names in other places. The object is to take turns getting close to a hole in a board which is actually kinda hard to do. Closest to that hole or through the hole wins. There’s a specific distance and you throw underhand meaning it’s much harder than you think. It’s a good way to have fun for a couple of hours.

I think Cornhole is most popular in the mid-western US, I have rarely seen it in the southern US, when I do see it, it is mostly at large outdoor family gatherings, and campground sort of settings.

It's my fav fast-food burger joint. I also know Graeter's Ice Cream and Skyline Chili. I'm not a fan of goeta. There are a ton of pickups in Ohio, for sure. People in Manhattan don't need a vehicle at all.

You don’t get away with vehicles without bumpers in the US either. A beater may be beat up but it’s fully functional including safety equipment. Beaters are for driving on ice so it doesn’t matter if you hit something.

I live in Southern Illinois. We have bears, cougars, Bob cats, wolves, coyotes, copperhead, rattlesnakes, water moccasins, cotton mouths, and rednecks. (😂😂😂) We have deer, foxes, raccoons, beavers, badgers, skunks, opossums, weasels, chipmunks, squirrels, rabbits, shrews, moles, files, mice, otters, muskrat, and all sorts of other Critters running around. The majority of them just mind their own business if you mind yours. You just have to be respectful of nature. One of the meanest things you will ever face is an old domestic Tom turkey. Geese can be butts as well, as can Billy goats. 😁

If they were freaked out about open carry, less than 1% of gun owners open carry. for every 1 that they saw with their own eyes, 99 others were carrying concealed. As far the cars, historically a car signified wealth so it was a goal to purchase a vehicle. As for seeing less regular cars (issue sedans), automakers in the US are producing fewer cars and more SUVs and trucks. Ford has discontinued making cars except for one of two models and have completely switched to trucks an SUVs. Along the same line as cars, historically public parks are for the less wealth and urban dwellers because the goal is have swimming pools, cook outs, etc. on your own piece of land, not shared with others.

Car inspection rules differ by state, county, and even municipality. While I live in the greater Atlanta area, I live in a county where we do need regular registration, but we don't need special emissions inspections. In some states, it might be only older cars that require inspection. In some places there can be two or more types of inspection (say, mechanical/frame and emissions). The cost of an inspection is often capped by law, which leads to a certain pernicious behavior on the part of the inspectors: they always pass you, but they don't do more than a cursory look-over of your car. Others will insist that the car needs certain repairs, which the inspector's shop just happens to provide, before the inspection will pass.

Walking in NY is more common then in the rest of the country. Many New Yorkers wear sneakers to work and change once they get to work because of the amount of walking they do. It can be faster than taking public transportation or certainly trying to drive.

The majority of people have their own yards which they hang out in when it's nice out, and most all apartment complexes have their own park-like areas for families to enjoy, so this reduces the amount of people in the parks. Their are more people in parks where these areas are not available, like in major urban areas.

Park here is usually busy on the weekends. During the week they are rather bare. Of course, larger cities will have more people in the parks. In the West, cities are more spread out so you have more parks within a city. One thing to remember is in the West is a massive amount of open public land. The need for parks is not as great when you are only a half-hour's drive from the wilderness. It is always hilarious to watch people from back East in our own country get awe-struck at seeing so much open land. I had a friend from New Jersey come out and I took him to Lake Tahoe. There is a small old castle (teahouse) on an island there. He could not understand why there was not a tall solid fence around the scenic lookout to prevent people from seeing the island so a person could sell tourist film, and souvenirs, and charge people to take pictures of it. Apparently, back east there is no public land so if you want to see a natural site or swim in a lake the property owner can charge you for access to it or even to view it.
