They're about to lose that castle if they cant make any money for the upkeep of it. What is the point? Sometimes you need to put your emotions and feelings away and look at reality. Either you turn the castle into a money making business, or you just don't make any money at all and lose the entire castle. The lady's game plan is not a solid one as she already admits that she's bleeding money and doesn't know what to do about it. If that's the case, step down and let your son take over. She's just an old woman stuck in her dying ways when everyone else who is smart and rational can see that this is no way to sustain such a property.

I could be wrong of course, but Lady Ashcomb comes across as a very spoiled woman when she is about to lose the castle. She is stubborn inflexible and disagreeable. Everything will go straight down the crapper if they don’t allow events, especially weddings on the weekends. They need a new roof ASAP, if you don’t keep it dry, that is the end of it!

I would think the best way to keep roofing costs down on such an enormous ancient structure is to have regularly scheduled and thorough inspections of the roof to identify the weak spots and take action; some of which are easily repaired and don’t cost a lot. A simple cage around that drainage hole and regular cleaning would have prevented thousands of pounds in household damage of property and repairs.

Exactly. That IS the reality. Unless the family has inherited an endless supply of money, it's the only way for them to survive. I've watched a documentary on Althrop. Earl Charles Spencer is very realistic. He, his wife and staff all work on the beautiful property. I loved what he said (paraphrasing) "I'm just the custodian of the house and it's up to me to keep it up and hopefully pass it along in better condition than I received it" I guess it also helps he's a wonderful historian and author. 😊

No, Wolf Hall was the family Home of the Seymour’s. Sudeley Castle was given to Thomas Seymour exclusively. Yes Catherine Parr married Thomas Seymour there and did her confinement and died of childbed fever at Sudeley. But when Thomas Seymour was convicted and beheaded for treason for trying ostensibly to kidnap Edward VI, all of his lands and titles were attainted (seized by the crown) Sudeley Castle itself was returned to Thomas and Catherine’s daughter Mary Seymour, but when she died in childhood, Sudeley reverted to the crown again, ending the Seymour connection.

This modern art idea is untenable. The daughter with her artistic vision belongs in a big city. There is NO economic future in that ridiculously niche market. Add the outside elements to that and she will have created an economic disaster. Profits are in numbers and numbers are for long lines of regular people paying to get away from their ordinary lives to experience the gardens and to be in an enormous house and home. The daughter needs to wake up to the realities and those are that common people built the castle in the first place, paid for it indirectly in the first place and and have maintained it through their fees for visits in the second place. She doesn't seem to realise that the upper class of this sort relies on the public for their status. Always have and always will. Therefore she must serve the public as does even The Queen as she and Charles have said over and over for decades. Maybe the daughter should realise her last name isn't Sotheby and wake up to reality.

Families in these huge estates really only have 2 options. Either you have a way to make enough money to support the estate and keep it as a private estate or your estate makes the money to support itself. It's very odd to me that these families don't seem to grasp this concept. Bottom line if you want your estate to be a private home you better have a very successful enterprise support it.

Massive roofs covering so many square feet, some roofs semi flat & some with steep slopes and odd angles & all sheathed with centuries old moss covered shale/stone shingles & surviving for so long, especially in a wet climate is an amazing testament to enduring materials & craftmanship in putting it all together, long lost art in todays world. One can only imagine the mold growing on the inner timbers & unseen framework from roof leaks that seep & are absorbed never appearing until its too late huge. Buildings that could be considered as castles were constructed in the US in the 18th and 19th centuries, many were private estates & many more used as schools, prisons, mental asylums & institutions & factories. Almost all built from stone or brick. Most those historic buildings or castles were razed many years ago due to the extreme cost of upkeep & maintenance & taxes, or the fact that the land they sat on was worth far more than the old building itself. An old 15 bedroom house built in 1900 in LA or San Francisco is torn down and in its place are built 150 2-3 story apartments and parking for all the tenents cars. The Apartments may last 40-50 years using todays shoddy building materials before they are out dated and due to be razed again for future use.

The ownership, operation, maintenance and repair is not the problem; it’s the inverted snobbery, petty, poisonous jealousy and abuse of power from the pinheads that don’t own it but devote their careers to acquiring positions of power from which they can slowly plot to destroy it. They will be its eventual undoing. That is its legacy: to fade away at the hands of the rotten underbelly of modern humanity that wants to destroy what it can’t have. On the other hand: ‘The family ownership should be maintained…. without intrusive business….’ is the voice of entitlement by those lacking the ability to run what they own. To be fair, it will take great management ability to survive the relentless attacks from poisonous, jealous, petty little have-nots, but there’s a certain justice in that: strong, well-run entities should survive, and poorly-run things should not. It’s a Darwinian issue: survival of the fittest; but with the need for some humanity - let the current family live out their days without being bullied, but with the commitment to end their entitlement and become ACTIVELY value-adding.

“Demented magpie….more stupid than a bumbling idiot”. Said with black humor perhaps, but by two old hacks sitting there in self-abusing, poor health, who uttered it with unintended, pinpoint accuracy. The young fellow, working hard to save the legacy, who says “…they can sod off…” has the high ground. There is no place here for whining, low-energy pudges in armchairs; BUT there is even less than no place for jealous pinheaded bureaucrats who want to come in, steal it and then destroy what they can’t have. The whole place, and the ‘sod’ on which it sits will belong to the young, hard-working fellow willing to preserve it and make it available for use. I’m with him 100%: the jealous pinheads should get lost, or if he is willing to offer it to them, accept a lovely peaceful resting place in the sod of a pretty graveyard on the estate. That way, even the pinheads get to enjoy a few square feet of the property in perpetuity!

Some suggestions would be for the neighbors that complain about the noise at night, is to provide incentives to the entire community whenever there is a concert or musical event so that way the people that live near the castle are also benefiting from these events. You do not have to provide a whole lot but it can be done where everyone feels is benefiting from these events. You can also create a group of people where a percentage of those gains are put toward the community and the group of people that belong to that community can decide where they want those incentives to be put toward. If the people that live around the castle feel they are not getting anything in return but noise, they are going to make it very difficult for the castle to have big revenues. You must include everyone around, that is how you get people to work with you not against you. Just my humble opinion...

@@toniam.2080 I am an American as well, from California to be exact. I am providing a solution to the road block that they are encountering. If the neighbors get some incentives they will be more willing to let the musical events happen. Right now the neighbors are not getting anything so their thinking is "why should I put up with all that noise?" but if they felt they were also benefiting, these neighbors might be more in favor to allow these events in the castle. I do not think this is being sour, I see this as doing proactive solutions where everyone can feel they are getting something in return.

If they were to include the neighbors, bring a senses of inclusion, appreciation and unity, even the neighbors would be advertising to get more musical events or weddings in the castle. When we are able to get people to work for a cause,a goal and they feel there is something bigger than their own selves in this case, the whole community would be benefiting, people are willing to give their all. I enjoyed this documentary & history of this estate. It shows how difficult it is to maintain historic castles. I don’t understand how the townspeople are not benefiting by the tourists & visitors. It creates jobs. The castle is huge. 1500 acres & noise travels that far that people are annoyed? They need to open it up as a bed & breakfast. So what is the problem with Lady Ashton having to share this huge castle! The rooms are antiquated. Who wants to live there anyway? Is there a historical commission that could take over? It’s sad but this is the future. God bless those trying to preserve this treasure.

While I do know I'm late to the conversation... I have to agree with you. While they were talking about renovating the farmhouse and creating an extension towards the back for honeymooners. I thought that was a fantastic idea. While they are at it, the farmhouse can be its own farm and store, selling its homegrown produce. Towards the other end, the extension could have a bedroom, build-in closet, an en suite bathroom, and perhaps a sunroom attached to it (they can see outside but no one can look inside). We have the glass and technology for it. The land is quite big, they could in years to come build a small cottage home for Lady Ashcombe, where she can live quietly and happily. I do understand back then 2009 they were barely making an income but years later she could recover an excellent income if they allow guests to have the full castle experience. I wish there was a part two 2021 the after.

They need to be jack of all trades, a businessman, a bricky, a glazier, a roofer, wallpaperer, a cook, a cleaner you name it. One site states, The current owners are Elizabeth, Lady Ashcombe, wife of Henry Edward Cubitt, 4th Baron Ashcombe, who owns 50 percent of the equity, and her two children - film-producer Henry (married to Hawaiian model Lili Maltese at the castle in 1998) and Mollie Dent-Brocklehurst - who each own 25 percent. @@pommiebears Very understandable in your situation. Historically listed properties are a pain to restore (even in the US the red tape you have to go through to even make structural improvements or repairs is INSANE!). The worst part was reading that they PAID $20K pounds (USD $24K) for it and the village only allowed them to have their installation up for a 3 year period. They have to remove the graffiti since it's damaging the façade of the castle and are fighting the village to keep it up. I mean, here you have a cash-stripped castle owner who fiscally can't operate or manage his estate, then you spend more money on top of this for a hideous graffiti style art, on top you'll have to pay someone to remove the graffiti and restore the façade because the paint is ruining the stone. Rather than making this a tourist hot spot, he's made it into a bleeding monetary faucet. I feel like if you were to inherit an estate such as this, all of the heirs should be obligated to take several courses in business, finance, hospitality and management to not end up in the red and make their home a profitable business venture.

Sudeley Castle. So this entitled family think they have the right to put on noisy events that annoy and disrupt the lives of all the locals in the area? It makes me sick that they think they have the right to do what they like just so that they can live in their castle with their titles and privileged life. They don't want to sell a painting to fix the roof and they are annoyed when they have to use some of their own money from their Trust funds. These people are beyond belief!!!

I don't understand any outdoor place that allows people to have music till 2:00 a.m. Why aren't they creating a contract with the wedding people saying that the music has to stop by 10 p.m. and if not to give them a heavy fine . Or charge a lot extra on the wedding party contract up front and they will get refunded that extra money if they don't play music after 10 p.m.

@@gardensofthegods I agree with you. If I had a party at my house and I played loud Music after 11pm, the police would be called to put a stop to it. x

@@ScrappyCraftsDigitals yeah ,these corporations especially are asking to be allowed to play music so late and he's saying he'd be able to get those accounts if they are allowed to have them play music later but what nerve for them to ask for that ... ... and same thing for the wedding parties . I guess it's different for that big bash they have every year at that one Castle I can't think of what it's called but they have a good concert there every year and I guess the townspeople really welcome it .

@@gardensofthegods I would have a separate breaker box so I could shut off the electricity at whatever time is agreed to in the contract for the event. I'd leave a few lights on so they could see to clean up after themselves and get to their vehicles safely, of course. I'm pretty sure it would be an effective way to let everyone know the party is over and it's time for them to go home. Lol

My instant take on this Sudely Castl e..was make some family space...slightly away, do the events, make smaller very elite ones the norm.. maybe, take pride in the castle, the gardens and the absolute privilige. It comes with responsibility.

I 💘 love the unique personalies and charm of the older couple at Burton Court ! The son is a hardworking guy but he should be absolutely ashamed of the way he treated his parents. They were kind enough to invest their whole life savings into a business venture that may not work out so he could have a future at Burton. Of course they would benefit too but they could have lived off their Savings! The way he treated his parents was shameful and especially hurtful to his dear Mom. He should have found a special little job for her to do and involved her just to make her feel useful and needed. After all....They are the real personalities of Burton Court that make it so special to begin with. It broke my heart to see her sadness. Where was his compassion for his sweet Mom when she was selling all her precious antiques and her memories to get the money they invested in his risky business idea ??? I hope he sees the show and says he is sorry to her and gives her a big hug. I wish I could! And the Dad is hilarious. Everyone loved him when they gave the tour. He should take advantage of his parents charm not push them out ! 🦋🌷🌻⚘❣

I would have sold it an moved back to Kentucky long ago, the kid's need to move out and buy their own homes, the sister with her goofy art needs to buy a hairbrush instead of smoking the helium she uses for those 'art work' balloons, good grief..

They act like castles haven’t ALWAYS been epicenters for parties. Like they have always been that way, since the Middle Ages and even before.

Sounds like Edward needs to find himself a woman whom has no problem working in gardens, playing hostess, waitress, and knows how to work on buildings inside and out. We do exist. And do those things happily. Good luck to him. That's about all that is going to make his life easier

There are a lot of things to do to make this profitable. You need a secretary Molly and her family can live in one part of castle, ad well as lady Ashton. Having weddings, birthday parties and business meetings Have companies rent areas and do seminars. You can have Xmas parties fashion shows and New Years eve parties.Hire a bus service to pick folks up and take them home. You don't want drunks on the road. Have Tupperware parties, bridal parties and dinner for people getting married at a church.Hire a Manager to oversea everything. Some of that land that's way from castle you can build 1 bedroom apartments. When I think of more stuff you can do I will comment again.

2022 update on these castles: "Mummy" still lives in and insists on running Sudeley Castle. Lady Ashcombe's children and grandchildren still all live on the grounds. Apparently they came to some sort of compromise because they did expand to 10 gardens and the main castle is open to visitors daily. Edward proved to have quite a head for business and his parents were foolish for not listening to him. Once Burton Court was handed over to him and his wife they've turned it into quite the destination wedding venue and hotel. Patrick Boyle still lives in Kelburn Castle. They've increased visitors by installing a car park and allowing walking passes for hiking on the grounds as well as a camping area. Changes are slow and guests regularly complain about the food, cleanliness and of being "bored" while visiting. Apparently it has become a fun daytrip for kids. I guess everyone wasn't fortunate enough to give birth to an Edward.

YES! I think that Edward was just nervous and worried in the early years. I believe his parents may have both passed, but his desperate venture has blossomed nicely. The reviews from the guests are stellar. He has a wife and two children now, and has really built up a nice business. Plucky man, I say.
