And a bit like the early medieval barons who took pride in their illiteracy, she appears to have gloried in her lack of intellectual sophistication and prowess; there is an account of T.S Elliot being given an audience with her and her family where he read The Waste Land, a privileged experience she was incapable of appreciating. What I notice as a common taste by the men of the Royal Family, they tend to be attracted to married women.

The way I understood it, Queen Mum did not welcome Edward back to UK because his abdication put such enormous strain on his brother. That burden arguably shortened her husband's life. This video prefers to claim it was because she feared Edward's past popularity.

The Queen Mum was a much more devious and complex character than her idealised public image suggested. She was unashamedly snobbish and prejudiced towards " foreigners" particularly jews, indians and Africans. Her private letters display many of those prejudices of her era. She was quite callous towards staff who fell on hard times or needed time with their own families and treated her daughters' governess shamefully. She also schemed behind Prince Philip's back to encourage courtiers to disdain his orders. She was no doubt a loving mother and grandmother though.

These men have their whole youth and every possible resource necessary to prepare and they are somehow never actually prepared. Amazing. Maybe they’re just not fit.

Never cared much for the Queen Mother. After seeing this l like her even less. The best thing about her is that she was married to a remarkable man.

This is a very, very kind documentary towards Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon later HRH Duchess of York, HRH Queen Elizabeth and Empress of India...then HRH The Queen Mother. Whew...But really these Royals went through such extraordinary times in the 20thC. Very much the lost Generation full of tumultuous change and innovation.

I remember a strange newspaper story that said Charles walked out to his Land Rover where the crowds were watching. A window opened and Diana stuck her head out and yelled. "Don t you do this. Don't you do this to me." No one knew what she was referring to. Charles looked up and heard her and then drove off. In view of what we now know, I think he was going to see Camilla and Diana never wanted him to go.

I think the relationship between the Queen Mother and her husband, the King, is very sweet. It's a case of opposites attracting working out very well, which doesn't always happen.

If only Diana hadn’t been picked to be Charles’s wife she’d have probably married a man who loved her, had lots of children and led a happy life being a wonderful mum. Instead she was thrown into a world of rules and duty where she received no emotional support whatsoever and had to put up with a spiteful, cheating husband and a vain old woman who made it very clear that she didn’t like her. Be careful of the choices you make in life, that’s the lesson Diana learned too late.
