Aidan, Gaynor and Sophie watch an oversimplified video about the pig war between the USA and Britain. Link to original video: • The Pig War - OverSimp... insta - @officeblokedaz
@@shawnmiller4781 We love Canadians and their pigs. Personally, I love Canadian bacon and maple syrup together. Like Daz’s family, I got a little teary over the pig even.
@@BTinSF I mean the movie (John Candy, Rhea Perlman, Alan Alda, Rip Torn) But I do remember being horribly disappointed that we could get actual Canadian Bacon at a Little Caesars in Kamloops BC when I was coming back from college in 99.
@@gtaisgreat8385 I have to admit that I had never heard of it until I was on a visit to the San Juan Islands... even though I grew up on the west coast, and had already lived in Washington State or some time previously.
Winfield Scott often gets overlooked but he was one of the greatest generals of our history and should be remembered alongside the greats like Grant and Einsenhower. He dought in the War of 1812, was one of the overall commanders(along with Zackary Taylor who rode the war to the White House) during the Mexican War and at the twilight of his career, was the creator of the Anaconda Plan, the strategy to win the Civil War(he retired, in the 1st year of the war, so he didn't carry it out himself but did live to see Grant follow his plan to win the war. ) One of the super famous political cartoons that we all see in history class of the Anaconda Plan is in fact labeled "Scott's Great Snake."
OverSimplified is one of my FAVORITE RU-vid Channels! "The Pig War" is something that I think both People from USA and the UK were never taught about in school or college. I surely never heard of "The Pig War" between UK and USA until I saw OverSimplified's video!
@@Ameslan1 The one thing the video didn't cover is a nice modern detail: the San Juan's national historic park is the only place where American government employees as part of their daily duties raise a foreign flag on American soil.
Man... I live in the Pacific Northwest and been to the San Juan Islands many times but didn't know over simplified did the pig war, pretty cool you'll reacted to it
For next oversimplified you could do the "Emu Wars" if you want to keep up with random but funny historical events. If want serious stuff ww1 or ww2 of course are pretty great. Oversimplified Prohibition is another strange but interesting time in US history as well.
As a residence of western Washington, we needed those islands. They’re the only place that gets regular sun on the west side. 🤣 This is also probably why we have such an entertaining relationship with BC. Also under the command of Douglas, officers of the Hudson Bay Company out of Fort Vancouver repeatedly put Esther Short and her children on a raft, without any paddles, in the Columbia River in the middle of winter. Her and her kids continued to return to their homestead that is now Esther Short Park in Vancouver WA. The PNW has some odd history.
These islands have about the same land mass as the state of Hawaii's main island. Small compared to the average US state, but still pretty sizeable islands.
I've known about the Pig War since the late 1950's when, as a child, I was first boating among the islands. Believe it or not, there is a beer brewed there known as Pig War Beer.
"Why didn't he just build four sides so the pig can't get in." This is a reasonable first assumption to make however as someone with some experience raising pigs, they are very strong(male adult pigs of that breed weigh on average 280 kilos), very crafty and very hungry(see the weight listed above). If they want to be on the other side of that fence nothing short of a strong electric fence will deter them. One of my favorite historical facts is that domesticated pigs actually spread out across North and South America faster than the Europeans who arrived with them did, because pigs are an unstoppable force of nature.
11:23 The war doesn't necessarily have a start-stop date. But to kinda summarize it: Post-1776: USA and Britain were cool with finding a compromise 1812: War of 1812 between USA and Britain 1810s-1859: Tense back and forth over ownership of certain territories 1859: Pig casualty 1874: Tension seized Feel like almost a 100-year war but there wasn't too much violence over the 100 years lol.
I'm still amaze and shocked alittle that this event happened over the killing of a Berkshire pig and almost start a war on an island that no one cared about period. And somehow I didn't knew at all. 😂😂😂
26:00 The real crazy thing is that was about 20 years from being a total thing of the past. Both in that the first transcontinental railroad would be finished not long after this, and telegraph lines would come with it. And give it another twenty and they won't need the wires. I can't think of anything that would've taken six weeks when I was a kid but can now be done near instantaneously. Maybe sending away for an order. When I was a kid there was a lot of "please allow 6-8 weeks for delivery", where now amazon can drop it off the next day.
26:01 Shows how wide part of the north America continent is. Even from the northern tip of Scotland down to the southern tip of England wouldn't take 12 weeks for a report to be taken via horseback. But perhaps, in terms of the crusades it would've taken 'bout that length of time for reports to go from the holy land to London and back.
The Pig War lasted from June 15, 1859 until some time in October. The exact date in October is fuzzy. After the British troops left San Juan Island in 1872, American troops only stayed for 2 more years.
I remember the pig war being part of the required curriculum of Washington state history class that we all took in 9th grade. I think I learned more from this video though.
Mark 5:14. Howdy! 🤠 I read about it in some class way back when. But anyway... PUN ALERT! 🤡 "Beavers"! Back when a hirsute pupendendum on a female looked like a beaver 🦫!
9:06 you can see the top of my whidbey island, finally i feel seen. Those other islands are called the San Juan Islands, Oprah owns one so they are big but not large by any means. And most of them are uninhabited or just a couple homes and docks. Only like 3 large ones in that cluster
When you ask about the expansion of the US, it was such an issue because no "real" country laid claim to the land yet. And the further west and closer to the sea you got, as well as further south for better agriculture, the less land became available. Every little bit counted, especially that it was the only land left that wasn't formally owned by anyone else yet. That's one of the reasons why European powers as well as the US tried to cross the continent as fast as possible and either slaughtered or enslaved many of the natives. Unclaimed land was rare and getting more rare by the day.
Thumb Up #982! 👍 You're welcome! Thanks! 😊 Notes: Hmm. In the "Fallout" video game series universe, Canada did allow itself to be annexed by the USA to make the war with Red China 🇨🇳 easier. But I don't recall the game clarifying if Canada suddenly became the biggest state or if each province became a state. As it is, there was a big long battle to win back Alaska! So, it made it much easier with Canada as part of the USA.
“54/40 or fight” was a big deal in a President Election. That Pickett was the Confederate general with the infamous attack at Gettysburg on day 3. One of the main reason Russia sold us Alaska was they thought y’all were going to take it from them. General Scott was one of our greatest generals. He was our main leader during the Mexican American War.
No offense But there is No way the British empire Can defeat American 🇺🇸 attack .. My British cousins you are on a island All America has to do is surround your country with American ships That would stop all your exports and imports. Y’all would succeed.. But this won’t happen Y’all are our extended family The UK YALL ARE like our great grandparents.. We are allies ❤
obviously the us would never invade canada, but if they did i really wonder if even the UK would get directly involved. Would they really risk it? especially with the people us control of the oceans and air?
OK I'm crying foul on his description of Lake of the Woods. Lake of the Woods also known as the Northwest Territory in northern Minnesota. The weird little angle came about from a surveying error when the Treaty of Paris was signed. The land area of is completely separated from the US by Lake of the Woods. To get there either you go across the lake or through Canada. There is not a river flowing west from the area. If there were it would flow into the Red River not the Mississippi River. The Red River is one of two rivers in the United States that actually flows north. It makes up the border between North Dakota and Minnesota before entering Canada up to Winnipeg. The Mississippi River starts in Lake Itasca Minnesota. It is knee deep about 18ft (5.5 meters). The widest point of Mississippi River is 11 miles(17km) near Lake Winnibigoshosh in Bena Minnesota. The widest navigation point is 2 miles (3.2km) Lake Pepin in Lake City. It is also known as the birthplace of Water Skiing. The deepest part of Mississippi River is 200ft (61 meters) located near the French Quarter New Orleans.
I would also like to add at the end of the video you said that Canada would have the entire Commonwealth supporting them in a war, it still wouldn't be enough... The United States sports the largest Air Force on Earth we have more fighters and bombers in the next eight nations on the list combined and it's pilots receive eight times the flight time than UK or Canadian pilots... The United States also sports the largest Navy on earth not counting North Korea but you know we don't count canoes as naval vessels, The United States currently feels 12 nuclear-powered aircraft carriers and eight non-nuclear powered aircraft carriers making the United States Navy the world's second largest Air Force The Royal Navy And Australian Navy combined only have three carriers and they are not supercarriers... The war at sea would be over fairly quickly... The only chance the Commonwealth would stand assuming all the fighting was taking place in Canada would be on land and without support from the sea or the air I don't think that would go very well for them... The United States army fields the second largest armored corps in the world at 5,000 tanks and 12,000 armored personnel carriers second only to Russia but unlike Russia the United States fields only the most current generation of tanks and APCs American field artillery is also superior... There is no nation on earth that can stand against the United States in conventional combat... If you were to fight a guerrilla war you would have a chance but it really depends on whether or not the United States is willing to fully loose the dogs of war or if we'd fight like we did in Afghanistan minimalizing civilian casualties and all that good fun stuff
I would like to go on record to say that the United States should NOT invade and conquer Canada. We should just make a trade. Michigan for British Columbia and the Yukon. Canada has empty territory but needs people, the USA has people but needs empty territory. This deal would increase Canada's population by five million, and all they would have to give up is Vancouver and some mostly-empty land. And the United States will have a land bridge to Alaska. Then we cross the Strait and take the Chukotka, Kamchatka and Magadan oblasts from Russia, because if we don't, communist China will. I don't like the fact that Russia is only a Bering Strait away, I CAN'T STAND the idea of mainland China being only a Bering Strait away! But first we need the land bridge to Alaska.
Try to understand the Americans point of view The pig is eating his potatoes back then you had to farm your own food there was no grocery store if the pig is destroying his crops then he is literally putting that man's life at risk because he might not have enough food for winter now... As for building a four-sided fence it wouldn't have made a difference If you've ever had a pig you know how hard it is to keep it in or out of a fence if it wants to get in or out The only way to really keep them in is feed them very well and maybe running electric fence around the bottom of it
Honestly, the military might of the US would be a good rabbit hole for you to look into...Canada doesn't have a very large military because it doesn't need to because of its treaty with the US. As for GB's military. You all don't even have military satellites. The ones you use you lease from the US. GB spends less than 60 billion a year on its military and the US spends over 770 billion. Canada spends around 26 billion a year. What keeps the US out of Canada is the roughly 1.3 trillion dollars of trade between the two countries and not some military power.
Britain isn't big enough to take on the U.S, the only reason the U.S doesn't invade Canada is because we represent freedom and democracy on the world stage and Canada is not a threat to us. We have better relations with Canada than any other country. P.S Canada doesn't look at themselves as being apart of Britain even though on paper it might say that Canada is under British rule if at any point Britain threatened Canada, Canada would fight back against Britain and then America would get involved on the side of Canada then Canadains would win and officially declare there independence from Britain.
It's quite sad really cuz there's a place on the border here in British Columbia Canada that SHOULD actually belong to us but because of the way they made the stupid border line it belongs to the u.s.. it's called point Robert's and it has like 1000 people and one elementary school and high schoolers have to take a ferrie to the mainland to go to school and if i recall correctly they use our water as well so it's the dumbest thing ever and I can't for the life of me understand why it's not made part of canada since it's soo small and literally the entire remaining piece of land it's attached to belongs to us
Manifest destiny. Also, so much of your videos are not around other American stories. Please start learning about native and African American history. We were here during all of this and have a story to tell. No one ever learns about our histories.
A country like the United States or England at the time had a reputation to keep up. As a World power the United Kingdom cannot just allow America to take land. That would have been a sign of weakness on the world stage. While guam may be mostly uninhabited America cannot simply allow China to take it.
