Ohtani is the ONLY player in the last century (since Babe Ruth in the early 1900s) to successfully be a full time hitter and a full time pitcher. Even when Babe Ruth did it, it was only for a couple of seasons before he became just a hitter. What Ohtani is doing has NEVER happened in history, at the level he is doing it. He is one of the BEST pitchers, and also one of the BEST hitters in the game. Also, he becomes a free agent this year, and unlikely to remain a Angel.

If the batter swings at a pitch, regardless of location of that pitch it is a strike if no contact is made.

He just does it like it's a normal thing. Hit home runs, run the bases like the flash, stealing bases, pitch 100mph. You might want to watch the WBC final game USA vs Japan, where Ohtani pitched to his teammate Mike Trout.

The number one sport in Japan is baseball. Over a fourth of MLB players come from outside usa/canada most from latin american countries some from japan/s korea very few come from Australia and practically none from Europe.

The movie you’re referring to is “Money Ball”. You should watch it. It’s pretty interesting. Ohtani is just incredible! When players like him move up to the majors, they are expected to choose whether they’ll focus on their hitting or their pitching. Ohtani wanted to do both, so he initially chose to play in Japan where his team allowed him to be a two way player. He moved to the MLB when the Angels agreed to let him continue to do both. Who knows, maybe we’ll see more two way players now that he’s been so successful, but there will never be another Shohei Ohtani. He’s one of a kind. Check out his teammate, Mike Trout, as well. He’s out with an injury right now, but there are plenty of highlight videos of him. He’s an amazing player too. He’s been name MVP like three times, I believe.

"The strike zone (the box) is defined as the volume of space above home plate and between the batter's knees and the midpoint of their torso. Whether a pitch passes through the zone is decided by an umpire, who is generally positioned behind the catcher." - Wiki

15:02 If the catcher drops strike 3, or if it hits the ground, the batter may attempt to run to first if there's no runner on first base. It's an obscure rule, they don't often reach first that way, as the catcher has plenty of time usually to just pick it up and toss it to first. Only if he messes up badly and it rolls back to the wall does that situation start to get interesting.
@Hessen84
@Hessen84 10 месяцев назад
I wouldn't say it's an obscure rule. Everyone that plays baseball above t-ball knows it.
@frankleethewurst

@@Hessen84 Obscure may have been the wrong word. Point being nothing usually comes of it, it rarely results in a hitter reaching base in the majors. Little league on the other hand... :)

Not in MLB.. in MLB they only allowed stealing first in 2019 as part of the atlantic league tests. But the rule didn't carry over with the rest of the rule changes this year.

There's only one other successful 2-way player in MLB history, Babe Ruth. And he's been dead for 75 years. Which is why people call Ohtani "The Unicorn", since what he's achieved is being the rarest type of player in all of baseball.

@ChatwinReacts and even babe ruth was only a 2 way player for a few years before he stopped pitching. Doing both at an elite level like shohei is doing right now is just unheard of.

He ran because if the catcher drops the ball on a strikeout the batter can run to first. The catcher either has to tag him or throw to first to get the force out.

I've heard that most starting pitchers are so exhausted the next day that they can only do light stretching. What's amazing about Shohei is that he can hit and run the day after the starting pitcher. And the grades are above average. His running speed is also above average.

If ball falls in the box and batter doesn't swing it's a strike. If the ball is outside of the box it's a ball. If batter swings and makes no contact regardless of where the ball falls it's a strike. 3 strikes = out, 4 balls = base on balls.
@matthewmorey8310
@matthewmorey8310 11 месяцев назад
If the catcher drops the ball on strike 3, the batter can run to first base. The reason is because you cannot record an out without having possession of the ball.
@omgbygollywow
@omgbygollywow 9 месяцев назад
If the batter swings at strike three but the catcher drops the pitch, then the batter can try to make it to first base before the catcher throws to first base or before the batter gets tagged out.

In the USA, it is miles per hour not kilometers per hour. 101 miles per hour is 162 kilometers per hour. That is far different than 101 kph being 63 mph.

He's not going to be on the Angels next year. He's going to be a free agent and it's very unlikely that he will re-sign with them. He wants to he with a team that has a chance to win multiple championships. He'll probably end up with the Dodgers or Yankees.

if a batter swings and misses the ball then it is also a strike, regardless of where the ball ends up.

It counts as a strike because the batter is swinging at the pitch even though it is not in the box

17:41 Yes "Moneyball" and you should definitely watch it, one of the most interesting sports movies. It's a slow burn, not a ton of baseball games or action in it, more from the perspective of scouting and management. But if you want insight into of the evolution baseball went through in the early 2000s, it's a fantastic (mostly) true story.

Shohei Ohtani has his contract with the Angel’s end after this season. It’s highly unlikely he will return to the Angels. He will more than likely go to a team that has a chance at winning championships like the Dodgers or Yankees, as they are the only teams that would have enough money to throw around to sign. Then again, it’s Shohei ohThani, and because it Shohei ohtani, and he just does things to be different and to be Shohei Ohtani, he could realistically end up with just about any team in major league baseball. He already took a $200 million pay cut when leaving Japan to come to play in the United States, so it’s hard to tell what he might do for sure.

The ball looks like it will be in the strike zone (box) but then at the last second it drops down or breaks to the left or the right outside the zone. That's how pitchers fool the hitters. If it's obvious that the pitch will be outside the zone as soon as it leaves the pitcher's hand, then the hitter will never swing.

A strike is any pitch that either the batter swings and missed (regardless of the ball placement), or a pitch that is in the strike zone (the box you see on TV) but the batter didnt swing at all.

There's three ways to get a strike: pitch within the box and the batter doesn't swing; the batter swings but misses (in this case, the box is irrelevant); the final way to get a strike is if the batter hits the ball into foul territory (and the ball is not caught), but this won't count for the third and final strike unless it was a bunt.

If you swing and miss, no matter where the ball is, it's a strike. Or if the ball is in the strike zone and you don't swing, it's a strike. Three strikes your out. Baseball is popular in Japan, Korea, China and Latin America. The original owner of the Angels was a famous movie singing cowboy named Gene Autry. That's the reason for the cowboy hat. This year they wear a kubota, a Japanese samurai helmet that Shohei bought. Ohtani has been with the Angels since 2017. He can sign with a different team next year.

The battle between the batter and pitcher is a game of chess. A starting pitcher usually has 4 different pitches and he needs to mix up them up and throwing location to keep the batter guessing, even if it means throwing "balls" - out of the strike zone(the rectangular frame). The batters with good plate discipline are good not swinging at "balls". When the pitcher knows a batter doesn't usually get fooled, he has not choice but to throw to the strike zone or else he risks walking the batter.

@NotSomeJustinWithoutAMoustache

You do have to get a pitch into the strike zone ideally, however, you can also intentionally pitch to the outside of the strike zone even when you're not trying to walk the batter, because a) it's usually harder to hit a pitch that's outside the strike zone, and b) a swing and a miss is still considered a strike, even if the pitch is nowhere near the strike zone. It's part of the mental gymnastics batters and pitchers go through on the diamond, batters have to be able to recognize whether a pitch will go inside the strike zone or not to also immediately decide whether to hit/bunt the ball or to stay still/dodge the ball (in case it's pitched too close to their body) to earn a walk or hit-by-pitch, and the pitcher can mix inside pitches with outside pitches to confuse the batters further into swinging/not swinging.

You said you would be angry because the player took a long time to throw that ball. He did everything right in fact, You are taught to plant both feet before throwing the ball, His forum helps him be more accurate on the throw, to the untrained eye, he took his time, but he knows what he's doing and he can tell how much time he has since he's done that 50,000 times in his life, he actually knows he has time to plant his feet.
