I watched the world baseball classic for the first time this year. I was one of the it’s a pointless, glorified exhibition people. My mind has been completely changed! Went with a Japanese born friend of mine to watch Mexico versus Japan in the semi finals in Miami… What an unbelievable atmosphere! I set up late at night to watch games between Australia and Cuba being played in Taipei. It was literally like the World Cup of baseball! The tournament is played every three years, the 2020 edition was just skipped because of the pandemic.

Not in the case for the WBC. It’s huge in baseball frenzy countries like Japan. MLB is the absolute worst at building excitement or promoting their superstar players. As long as MLB is in charge of the WBC, it will end of dissolving.

I'm American, I love the tournament. Also as I have Italian descent, it was cool to see team Italy do much better than expected, albeit with mostly US born players. Its interesting to say the least. I absolutely loved watching the underdog Aussies put up such a good fight and of course the Czechs.

Theres a correction needed here, It's not that Americans dont care, it's that the TEAMS and the MEDIA dont like it. The fans mostly loved it. The media always shits on everything outside of the regular sport. All Star games, Home Run Derby's, etc. It really pisses me off what crybabies they are, and they are so out of touch with the fans sometimes!

I remember the first WBC happened when I was stationed in Pearl Harbor. I was so excited about it and thought it was a great idea to have a baseball version of the world cup. I was especially excited because my favorite player, Chipper Jones was playing for team USA, but once I noticed that there really weren't any other big names on the team, I got pissed off. All the teams that were telling their players not to participate in the WBC made me so annoyed that I didn't want to watch anymore.

One of the reasons for the excitement of this year's tournament was the increase in the number of players from foreign countries in MLB, and the fact that they represented their own countries, which raised the overall level of the tournament. In addition to that, from this year's tournament, players are now able to participate in the country of the passport held by the player's parents or wife. I think this made the tournament more international. This was a good idea.

This video and the highlights were absolutely fantastic! he did such a stellar job of telling each team's story and showing how important the WBC is to the participating countries (even the Czech Republic). I was a diehard Reds fan growing up but at some point when free agency just kept gutting rosters and MLB became about the biggest market teams buying up all the best players I lost interest and haven't watched for a decade or more. But I saw the US vs Japan showdown in the WBC and of course Trout vs Ohtani and it was the best thing to happen to baseball in recent memory. It's kind of sad that the US is playing with one hand (and a leg) tied behind its back because ultimately The World Series will always matter more and teams want to protect their star players, but that just allows the other countries a far better chance to win a tournament that means so much to them.

Hi, guys! I'm happy to see two Brits talking about baseball. There were some things I wanted to point out, but I'll keep it to one. In the baseball world, the Caribbean countries like Cuba, Puerto Rico, and the Dominican Republic are not minnows like San Marino or Andorra are in Euro football. They are actually powerhouses in baseball. So, the reason why MLB teams don't want their players in the WBC is because they don't want to risk injury in a tournament they think is completely irrelevant. Americans like to say they're the best without actually proving it. You can see such attitude even in the comments here. For what it's worth, they probably are. But anywhere outside the US, you usually have to prove that. You guys mentioned that because you have the World Cup and Euros, you really don't care for the Nations Cup. But it's not the same for the WBC because baseball has no WC or Euros. That's why other nations are so enthusiastic about the WBC, but why aren't the Americans? The only answer to this is that, because they think they are the best, they think they have everything to lose and nothing to gain in international competition. That's why they insist WBC means nothing. This is very self-contradictory, though, because if you're the best, you wouldn't lose, hence you have nothing to lose. Another thing the Americans don't understand is that having the best players doesn't always mean they have the best team. Besides, the Dominicans and Puerto Ricans can put out a full roster of best MLB players just as much as the US. I hope Americans would stop saying that they are the actual champions even if they don't win because they're not sending their best players. They're doing that in basketball, too. In the 2023 WBC, the US team boasted a never before seen galactic lineup and they're still giving the same excuse. Their pitching staff did lack the best MLB pitchers, but they didn't lose because of their pitching. And yet they give it as their excuse. BTW, there is another international tournament in baseball besides WBC, but it's held by the WBSC, not MLB. So, naturally, Americans ignore this tournament completely, and MLB teams basically do not send any players to play in it, simply because they can't profit from it. On the contrary, WBC is held by an MLB related organization, and 66% of all the profit made through the WBC is distributed to the US, and all the other nations divide the remaining 34%. Japan, being one of the largest contributors to WBC, if not the largest, receives only 13% (Japan has won 3 out of 5 WBC tournaments and is still considered a minnow by many Americans) . I know not all Americans support such arrogant views. Yet, it would be dishonest to say none of such exists. For those many good sported American fans, cheers!

I will say not all Americans are against this tournament. I followed the WBC closely in 2013 and 2017. USA won in 2017! I watched all USA games this tournament, bought merchandise, and even watched a few other teams play. I love all sports and just love big international tournaments. I have been waiting for this tournament since 2017! This tournament was so fun to watch even though my country, USA, didn't win it all. The last two tournaments have done a lot to improve the image of the tournament in the minds of many baseball fans. Even my Dad and brother who aren't normally into tournaments like this watched and followed it pretty closely. I will say like what Daz said it makes a lot of sense for clubs and some fans to not want their players to play in this. Professional baseball has been around since 1869, the World Series has been around since 1903, and the World Baseball Classic has only been around since 2006. In the minds of a decent amount of fans winning a World Series is the most important thing to them, as well as many clubs who make hundreds of millions of dollars off the success of their club. There is far more tradition and appeal in winning what is considered by many to be the pinnacle of the sport, the World Series. For the betterment of the game this tournament is needed though. Many fans and players want this tournament and consider it very important to the game, as do I. I can see this becoming one of the bigger sporting events in the world. Especially with more American fans getting on board and more top players playing for USA or another country. I can't wait to see where this tournament goes. Go USA!!!

Last year he flipped the script Got a HUGE contract in the off-season....then got hurt in the WBC and now many Mets fans have turned on him again. Even stupider is the Reds tried to fleece the Mets for his brother, Alexis...who was the one who jumped on Edwin to begin with leading to his injury. And yeah the Mets have had it rough but they planned their whole year to have David Robertson setup Diaz...and what has happened in Robertson has been great but as the closer but the guys in the role he was supposed to be in have gotten hammered. So yeah....the WBC is a big part of why the Mets have had their season tanked. i just hate that its played right before the season instead of like November/December

The way around it is to get Congress and the Exemption involved along with player compensation if you have a player get hurt while playing, say from a pool of similarly valued players across both leagues; MLB goes along with the pool of players idea or they forego the MLB Anti-Trust Exemption. Personally, I enjoy 10U or 12U travel ball just as much. You don't need big tourneys and professional players. The passion should be for your teammates. and the shared exertion and goal.

The video glosses over the reason MLB teams have such strict guidelines concerning pitchers: The WBC is played during Spring Training, when pitchers are trying to build up their arms for the season. That's the major flaw with the WBC; the pitching inherently is far behind where it would be mid-season. Also, I think most Americans feel they're already watching the best of the best every day in MLB, so why bother with this exhibition?
@exia0616
@exia0616 9 месяцев назад
Thats the issue that i see, when to properly place the WBC. If you put it in feb/march it will interfere with spring training. Put it on november/december it will be bad because most players at that time will be in no shape to play as most players will be off the field by october except those who will be playing extended due to playoffs. Think that is also the case for other leagues as well as most will be already done by that time. Put it in july, good luck trying to pulling players out of their teams. Also to make it more interesting why not instead have the AL vs NL typical all star game, why not do USA vs World

I find it extremely odd that USA, one of the most patriotic countries in the world, wants very little to do with WBC (especially teams), but iv talked to (seen) fan bases have the same mentality. I literally see 60+ American flags in yards on my 10-minute ride to work, but once you add $$ to it (possibility of losing a valuable player for a period of time), USA will always choose money, even if it is over national pride. As patriotic and we are in the USA, $$$ trumps ALL! SAD but true for the sport. That being said, i think overall fans loved it, other than the ones who worry about injury to players on their team. I look forward to 2026 to see if it builds in popularity in the USA enough to change the money hungry team's stance on it.

It was fun. Good baseball. I'd much rather my MLB team have a World Series title, which I actually care about. I didn't care about the outcome of the WBC. However, I don't think it detracted from any MLB team making the postseason, given the fate of any contending MLB team in any given season. Baseball is weird and unpredictable anyway. That's why there are 162 games a season. This WBC did help grow baseball worldwide, however, and that was fantastic.

international competition just doesnt seem to have as much appeal here as it does in other places, dunno why. my guess is that most americans dont understand how much of our culture spreads to other places. so when we dont care about international competition we assume other people dont care about it either because we're used to not really having to consider other countries in our day to day life. someone from france for example may not be able to go 8 hours without being forced to consume some aspect of american culture, but someone from the US might go days without a single thought to anyone besides the US, canada, and mexico. its similar to the olympics, where we kind of only care when we're winning and then we forget about it. every time a city has a bid for the olympics, you have a bunch of people who try to stop it because the prestige of hosting the event isnt worth it to them. i know for myself i dont really care that much how america performs on a world stage in sports. seeing us compete against other countries has no appeal to me and just reads as another basketball/baseball/swimming/whatever match

The main problem is pitchers can very very easily destroy their arm from overwork. When you have guys going full bore before spring training is even over you are increasing that wear and tear by 10 fold. Pitching is not a natural motion, it's extremely stressful on the body and good pitching and defense can steal games. One starting pitcher or tier 1 caliber position player goes down and a team could torpedo their season. These players are worth tens of millions of dollars to these teams. In the case of Diaz specifically the Mets literally just extended him for 150 MILLION DOLLARS before this happened.

Look at baseball doesn’t exist about the 2023 season so - to get a better understanding of the season & ballpark atmosphere. It’s so good. Ask Mets fans how they feel about the WBC?? Their closer is done for the season because of a freak accident while celebrating. Team USA had 3 Phillies players & the whole time I’m just nervous that one of our guys will get hurt! Instead, it was the Phillies 1st baseman that got injured in the lasts games of the pre-season & is now out for the season!
@darnell-mooney

that depends on if they're Mets fans first or baseball fans first. the WBC can and should be the pinnacle of baseball just like the World Cup is in soccer. what meaning is there in Trout and Ohtani playing for the angels and missing the playoffs every year? in the WBC they provided one of the best baseball moments ever in the most watched game ever. that one at bat was more meaningful of a baseball moment for the sport in general than anything they will do in the MLB this year.

I beg to differ, MLB is play for the highest bidder, WBC Is about National pride. Just like the world cup in soccer. If it was truly countries competing against each other it would be Venezuela vs USA every year. Most of the players just aren't on par. If they happen to win a match by pure luck on a bad day that doesn't mean your teams better at all. Again, the USA didn't even send much good players and had restrictions and still almost won. Aidan is correct. It's only a few dumb Americans who still don't embrace the WBC. Even the American players now love the WBC. ....The USA lost the game to Japan because they did not know how to bunt! Throughout the tournament they showed zero ability to bunt, and it hurt them in the last inning against Japan. Mookie Betts did not know how to bunt in a critical situation and ended up hitting into a double play. This is very important, and the American media is silent about it.

Aidan doesn't understand that when those rabid sports fans and commentators say "No on cares about this" they are just talking about American baseball fans. They know Japan, Taiwan, Cuba, etc. care tremendously, and they aren't trying to stop those teams from competing. They just don't want players from THEIR home teams in Major League baseball playing in the tournament and getting hurt and losing them for the season. For them the World Series is the goal. It's no different than if Man City had to loan star players to the English National Team to play in a tournament (not World Cup Qualifiers) and they got hurt and couldn't compete for the EPL Championship. Man City fans would be livid! Personally I would love to see American stars play in the WBC, but that's because I don't care about MLB. Also you have to take into account that ALL of this is only happening because MLB created the WBC to begin with, so it's not a case of America condescending to other countries sporting traditions. The tournament wouldn't exist if Major League baseball hadn't created it to include these other countries.

MLB plays too many games in the regular season to be risking their players (especially pitchers) in international play and it is the biggest reason the USA has not dominated baseball like one would expect. Plus, the World Series is the biggest prize in baseball over any other tournament or championship. All baseball players worldwide DREAM of playing in the MLB anyway so in baseball, all roads lead to the MLB. I like the Classic and I think it should continue, however I don't think the USA should compete in it unless they use non-pro's who could make the committment. It's just like the NBA and NHL. They absolutely HATE these national tournaments because of the serious threat they pose to the professional players. Baseball plays 162 regular season games. Basketball and Hockey both play 82 regular games. It is no wonder there has been some talk to shorten the seasons in pro sports (especially in America). The USA sent a competitive team that had no stars or really good players and STILL managed to nearly win the tournament. It is NOT about the USA losing, it's because of the serious threat of injury (one of Puerto Rico's players was seriously injured while CELEBRATING the win over the Dominican Republic)., and THAT alone shows why the USA does not like this tournament. We will win the next one without sending our best players, and I am confident about that.

Americans do care about the WBC. Those guys who said that Americans don't care are paid by CBS. CBS airs MLB games and has a stake in keeping MLB players on their network. The WBC has an exclusive deal with Fox. These guys are talking heads paid to say what they're told. Plenty of Americans watched. The final had a 67% increase in viewers over 2017 at 5.2 million viewers. The world series only averaged 12 million viewers which is double the viewers. But for the anger these guys had at players playing in this event and their yelling "it doesn't mean anything" you would have thought viewership would have been much lower that. They either are out of touch with people or they're being paid to have this viewpoint because CBS doesn't want to possibly lose money from high profile players getting hurt and not being in games shown on their network. Or, I could be completely wrong and off base.

Daz is right Clubs have a lot of money invested in their players, and if they lose one, could cause them to lose in their league, and sell less tickets. Sports teams are in business to make money, no other reason. Take the New York Mets. Last year they won 102 games. They lost the division by 1 game, but still made the playoffs. This year they lost their closer in the WBC. Their closer is one of the best in the league. This year they are 20 games out of first place, with no chance to make the playoffs.

I love the WBC but I’ll point out something from the anti-WBC perspective. The original video isn’t really explaining well from a fan perspective (ik it mentioned when the wbc came into existence) Baseball since 1903 has been built around the World Series and league play. Even now the best players are in the MLB. Not the WBC. You can’t compare it to the Olympics, or World Cup… those have been historic and meaningful tournaments for generations where all the best players in the world compete…. Just inventing a tournament in 2006, and expecting people to care about it at all is a tough sell on it’s own. Getting people to care about it in anyway if it hurts the teams they (and often generations of there family) have been fans of for there entire life… is pretty difficult to expect from a fan if we’re being honest. For other countries they don’t care as much about the teams bc theyre all in America. And outside some places in Caribbean it’s a wayyy younger sport anywhere outside America. So they’re not as tied to the league like we are. You’d have to imagine if the EPL was the only high level soccer league in the world and always had been. Plus the World Cup didn’t exist until the mid 2000s to put yourself in there shoes. Which might be tough bc that’s not how soccer has ever been. But to that point to many in America the WBC isn’t what baseball has ever been about. But bc the Carolina’s don’t have an MLB team I just follow the league and my college team. So with no real attachment to any specific MLB team the WBC is perfect for me. I love it. But if my NFL which I’m die hard for (the panthers) had our starting QB get a season ending injury in a tournament they made up a few years ago… I’d be livid and the biggest hater of that tourney lol
