A reporter visited a food fair in Singapore where Italian and other EU based exporters get support from their respective governments to break into this market. But the sad news was that grants for British based exporters are not available, which is making post-Brexit life even more difficult.

@michaelramsay-fraser "The vast majority were in favour of Brexit and voted for it"? Not sure if 58% is a "...vast majority...", but definitely higher than the overall national vote. Apparently not! Farmers themselves were voting Leave only slightly above average. But what they are fully responsible for, is their wall-to-wall advertising campaign in every field along every country road. And that was 100% for Leave. I do not feel sorry for them, because they have not, so far, dealt with their part in promoting Brexit. Not accepted that their ubiquitous advertisements were an important instrument in getting people to vote Leave - and similarly, to vote Tory in 2019. Wonder what their posters will say for the forthcoming GE!

Brexit is the best thing that could have happened to the EU… it forced people to understand what the EU is… a simple open market to compete with common standards… that is all… and it brought prosperity to us European at a time when our empires died. The thing is, I believe English people have never accepted in their mind the end of the empire, hence their half baked positon in the EU and then brexit. The EU and Europeans will never accept the UK back in the EU along the same line as before, that is if they want to rejoin in 20 years… which no European is waiting for anyway. But you have to remember that Brexit was voted for by a minority of UK citizens. Yes, the leave campaign won a marginal vote but the numbers of people who voted leave were outnumbered by those who voted stay or did not vote. If we cast our minds back, you will recall that the British voted in favour of the Maastricht treaty, whereas other European countries, such as France, voted against it. Were the EU a purely economic trading bloc, then no-one would wish to leave. But it was the lack of fairness in the policies, which were intended to appease economic interests such as farmers, and the proposal to increase the centralised role of the European Commission which offended. The rules were not designed for the number of countries now in the EU. Smaller countries, which are fraction of the population of bigger members such as Germany, France and Italy, have undue influence, whether that be in the rotating presidency of the European Council. Majority voting on decisions is unfair unless it is weighed in favour of population size. Why, for example, should a vote by Malta (population 530,000) or Luxembourg (population 650,000) count the same as Germany (population 83,800,000j

@@CM73878 good points… but Europe is not a country… which would justifie your comment on the proportionality of votes if it was. It is an association of countries, and in that regard I agree on the one country one vote, with same weight. It forces each country to make sure we more forward together, and sometimes backward. It is not a prefect system, but it works well enough. To have a proportional vote would be the best gift to people who are against the idea of the EU. @@CM73878 Implying that the "did not vote" category would have all voted to remain is a massive amount of cope. By their choice to abstain from voting they voted to leave. Anything other than active dissent is silent consent. Then again, your entire post is useless cope. That other countries than the biggest one shave an influence is necessary for such a union to work, or else you just have a tyranny of the majority, which is what I guess the US imagined when it voted for the Maastricht Treaty. There's also your utter lack of historical knowledge of what the EU is. The EU were at no point a purely economic trading block. The European Steel Trade Union preceding the EU was and was founded after WWII to remove all incentives a European nation had for starting WWIII by tying the countries together in trade. This was later expanded into what became the Single Market after that came the Maastricht Treaty. What you say is one thing, what you express in what you say is a desire for a lack of Democracy, which is on par with Britland since it's steeped in Conservative ideology. While some 17 million people voted 'Leave' in practicality that was closer to 20 million and only 16 million voted 'Remain.' Should the cut-off point for who got to have influence in the EU be the population number of the UK? What exactly do you want? Because by the way you express yourself, you sound like you want population rather than the area to be the deciding factor. I find what you leave out even more suspicious than what you say.

@@sebmez923 Equal influence is how you get the countries to work together in such an arrangement. National identity is hugely important in Europe. What have we got that they would want to buy, it's going to be a hard job trying to sell pork pies in any of the Muslim Asian countries, most of the things they want to buy they can either grow themselves or buy from their closest neighbours, now there's a good idea, trading with our closest neighbours. Why didn't we think of that.

There are plenty of non-Muslim Asians too. Thailand, Vietnam, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan etc, even Muslim-majority Malaysia and Indonesia have sizeable non-muslim populations. There are also sizeable expat communities living and working in the region. Some of the richest ones in Singapore and Thailand. But British trade to the region will still not matter much, and will never matter as much as trade with Europe.

So exactly who is to blame for this. 'But Jeremy Corbyn' time again, when for 6 out of the last 8 Labour defeats he wasn't even LOTO?

But we had a large and profitable Market for it, so we had to invent a new name for Our Product, which is of course still FETA, but now we name it White Cheese (I think?), and with the same taste it sells well (The Greeks haven't our Export Capacity). Of course we haven't been stupid enough to leave and mostly prevent selling to our largest Market, with a lot of extra costs from that!

The current thread of the videos is “uk is out of the eu market” and for some reason my brain interpreted that as “the uk and the eu are neutral to each other” but watching this the reality is actually worse, the uk is now a competitor to the eu and viceversa in for example the asian market, ouch!
@MrsGardiner
@MrsGardiner 13 дней назад
Yes of course. This is why the TCA is full of level playing field demands and instructions, even sanctions to avoid the EU single market ever being undercut by UK. The reality is indeed that UK changed from 'one of us' to 'one competing against us', as seen by the EU. And the EU is bigger and better equipped at handling competitors. The EU can negotiate better trade deals, bigger quotas and more favourable conditions, simply because it is more important than a solo medium sized country. With a not very engaged tory government that still believes in libertarian free marketeering capitalist principles to boot. No state interference (ie help) at all, leave it all to the market.

@paultaylor7082

The problem is British cuisine and food has a long way to go before it can compare with French, Italian and Oriental food, of which there are many varieties. By and large, it's mainly bland and boring for much of its staple fare, much of it has been taken over by American style offerings, such as hamburgers and fried chicken. Steak and kidney pie and mash doesn't exactly 'cut the mustard', to coin a well worn phrase. Meanwhile the UK public's taste buds for wanting 'forrin' (sic) cuisine has increased exponentially over the last 50 years ago. The days of the boring Berni Inn choice of various steaks with chips, fish and chips or even chicken and chips (in a basket, lest we ever forget, the 70s definition of the height of sophistication) are but a distant memory. Thank God for that. I'm off to the the local tapas bar next week to celebrate the granddaughter's 40th birthday. Somehow an alternative visit to the local version of Harry Ramsden's Fish & Chip Shop (or equivalent) didn't seem particlrly enticing to her. My specialities as head chef at Chez Nous are agneau avec ratatouille (lamb with ratatouille), various meat or shellfish curries of usually medium strength, Italian sauces with meatballs or other meat, the Spanish version of that dish (albondigas) with patatas bravas and others too numerous to mention. The latest cusine I've discovered is Thai, some of their dishes, especially the curries, are really nice. Bookings are being taken, as I post this...
