Well they were huge here in Canada; as Fil mentions at the end of the video they had a string of Gold and Platinum albums in Canada and some success in the States as well. There was an explosion of interesting bands in Canada in the 70's in large part due to the government bringing in the Cancon regulations in 1971 that said radio stations had to play a certain percentage (25% in the 70's) of Canadian music. Before then Radio was dominated in Canada by American and British music. The first album of theirs I bought was "On Record" in 1972. I pretty much bought every album and single they released through the 70's after that. Saw them live 3 times in the 70's on the "Electric Jewels", "Stand Back" and "Whole Worlds Goin' Crazy" tours when they were at their peak. They were a great live band. By the way they did get noticed in the States in the 70's opening on tours for The Rolling Stones and Styx among others.

I'll say it again, UNDERRATED by whom? Nobody who ever HEARD April Wine "under" rated them. They just plain rock. I live in a small town with two railroad crossings. I think the RR engineers are geniuses of torture - they have the "ding ding" set to OOOWATANITE. Every time a train comes through I break into song!

Thank you for this. As a Canadian, I've always been really proud of our musical talent. We really went through an extra special time during the 70s and 80s with Rush, Triumph, April Wine, Chilliwack, Fludd, BTO, Max Webster, Harlequin just to name a few. Myles Goodwyn was so prolific as a song writer. His music has been a part of the soundtrack of my life since I was a little kid. Sadly we lost him a few days ago, but his music will always live on.

I had heard of April Wine but only got into them recently (for some reason late 70's early 80's rock was a blind spot for me save Motorhead). Really this entire lineup blows me away. They are so tight you would think they had been in this lineup for years. I agree that he is criminally obscure when taking into account how amazing his drumming is and how well remember his solos live were by people who seen them.

Thanks for this review. Myles Goodwyn retired a few months ago, but the band plays on and I saw their concert last night (June 14) in Victoria, British Columbia. In the 1970s and into the 1980s, Canadian radio gave April Wine a lot of airplay, and as you note, they had several huge hits in the U.S. as well, both singles and albums. In 1980 at the age of 16, I was planning to see them but there was a heavy police presence at the show, and I could see the cops were frisking each person on admission. I was in possesion of, uh...something that would have landed me in jail at that time, so I didn't go in. In those days, tickets were bought at the gate on the night of the concert, so I wasn't out of pocket. A mere 43 years later, I finally saw them live. As a Canadian growing up in the 70s and early 80s, April Wine was a big part of the soundtrack of my adolescence and early adult life, which made last night's concert a special event. Thanks again for this review of a great concert in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Yes ma'am, I will second your Canadian bands plug. I am a '60s - '70s rocker but those bands could hang with anybody. Having spent a lot of time in and with a local band(s) I always wanted to give Ric and Triumph a double high five for getting as much (or maybe more) full sound from a three piece band as ZZ Top ever did. And Triumph did not attempt to use full cranked distortion to mask the dead spots that are so hard to avoid with three pieces.

I lived in Dartmouth Nova Scotia where Myles Goodwyn came from (waverly) but that is just outside of Dartmouth, and I had the privilege to see the band live in a local pub back many many years ago, and I mean many years ago, then caught a performance at our local forum. The cool thing about Myles is when he should have been listening in the classroom he was was pounding off lyrics. He was a great guy. The last time I saw him play was in another pub in Dartmouth in around 1991 (I could be wrong on that date, I had a few too many). Me, and a few of my friends knew every song April Wine recorded, and he got a kick out of us while we sang right along with him through most of the songs. Well the best we could while taking swigs of our beer. The amusing thing about it all is that he was smiling from ear to ear because he got a kick out of watching us follow right along. Great times.

Lot of people say April Wine is under rated, I think that is incorrect. They were/are very under appreciated. One of the best live bands ever and Gary Moffet was an incrdible player and with Mercer keeping the beat, not many that could top them performance wise. RIP Myles. All of Dartmouth Nova Scotia and the world misses you! I have seen these guys live more times than I can count and so lucky to be raised in the 70's & 80's. The last time was the mid 90's at a Parle Beach festival with Def Leppard as the headliner.

I love that in 2022 you can go on RU-vid and hear a British bloke talk about a Canadian band from the 1970's! I always thought April Wine was a bit of a "best kept secret". Looks like the secret's out. Thanks for the video.

april wine in my thinking is the greatest band canada ever put out, mick jagger of the rolling stones called them the next big super band, they had like 15 to 20 big hit songs in canada , they were just never managed right and never really made it in the states although they did have a couple of hits there, went to see them couple of years ago and they are still an awesome band miles sounds just the same

The second concert I ever saw was April Wine, on this tour. Since then I've seen them several times, in front of 50 000 plus at outdoor festivals or in small town bars where they carried on conversations with the audience. Always a great show. The band started in my home province of Nova Scotia, in later years they would often do shows in small towns around the province, presumably for the fun of it as there weren't enough seats to make much money. Classic Canadian rock and character.

Saw them open for Rush in 1979 with front row seats thanks to a popular radio DJ at the time who thought me & my friends were cute, lol. What an experience seeing both those bands that night-they were both GREAT.

I loved those guys back in the 80s. Bramalea Ontario 1979 - 1984! Woohoo! Wish I was old enough to see them open for the Stones at “the ElMo” in ‘77 but I did see them I think it was the summer of 1982 because I was 16 at the Canadian National Exhibition Grandstand. Awesome!

Damn, Fil- I'd totally forgotten about these guys... I sense another trip down the RU-vid rabbit hole in my future, lol. Growing up in the 80's ROCKED!! We had the best of 70's rock, and 80's stuff as our soundtrack.

April Wine played my high school in the early 70s. They had recently released their first single and were just becoming popular in Canada. Fast forward 10 years and I saw them at the Montreal Forum at the "homecoming concert" after a long North American tour. 20,000 of us were treated to what may have been the best concert I ever saw. They were a great live band. When Jerry Mercer started banging a big red fire alarm bell behind his kit during the second encore, we knew it was for Oowatanite and the place erupted. Great band. Great LIVE band. Thanks for resurrecting wonderful memories!

I had no idea that April Wine were a thing outside of Canada. They played the high schools when I was a student in suburban Toronto. Rush, Fludd, Leigh Ashford, A Foot In Cold Water, Edward Bear, Motherlode. I'm about a year younger than Geddy Lee. He went to Newtonbrook High School when I was attending Downsview Secondary less than two miles apart. Rush played in our cafeteria where dances were set up. Pics are in one of the yearbooks. Over my later years i've managed to make acquaintances with musicians of that era. They still live to gig and they still put on a good show.

April Wine was one of the better live shows I attended. They were opening up for Tesla, but Tesla was having a bad night, Jeff Keith had a bad cold & step throat and he couldn't sing that night, but April Wine was awesome
