Just heard that Myles Goodwyn passed away today. Huge loss for Canada and rock. His legacy is secure. An immense talent whose contribution to rock music is immeasurable.
Rush- Heart- Brian Adams- Loverboy -Guess Who- Neil Young etc. April Wine has been on the Radio as long as all of them - their classics stand the test of time not only for Canada but for the world of classic Rock -God Bless You Miles thanks for all the great music.
I too was 18 in 1982. And I have seen many bands play in Cedar Rapids. I am an Eastern Iowa lad. Although for some reason I did not attend this concert.
One of the absolute best Canadian bands to ever hit the airways, straight outta Halifax. Incredibly talented musicians, gifted to say the least, and very largely underrated. Some of the most incredible songs ever written and most awesome guitar riffs and solos. If you ever had the chance to see this band live, or grew up listening to them, you know exactly what I mean when I say underrated. They kept coming with album after album and hit after hit. We love our April Wine!
Yeah Jerry’s drumming he was a beast Brian greenways guitar work the whole band in fact is a Canadian Treasure seeing April Wine live is a concert I’ll never forget..
I turn 60 this year and I stumble across this video these guys were one of my faves back in the late 70s and early 80s I just forgot how good they are you got three guitar players on one stage that are sync perfectly I listen to this and close my eyes and I swear I'm 20 again thank you April Wine For The Memories
Jerry Mercer... absolute beast on drums! Never got the real respect he deserves. He's 82 now... wishing him and the boys nothing but love and accolades ahead!
@@tb9489 hahaha was thinking the same thing! My mother is now disabled, has MRSA, and is 83. My mother-in-law is 80 and recently widowed. And to think Jerry is the same age as them is just surreal and mind-boggling.
@@whitenoise546 My mom who will be 81 this summer had a stroke 2 years ago and is slowly recovering. It's really puts life in perspective when our family members get older, I remember when I thought 40 was old! All we can do is keep on rockn', roll with the punches
this concert was filmed in Cedar Rapids Iowa, I was at the show it was amazing. There were over 9000 people in attendance. The show was opened up by Eddie Money and it was filmed as part of a duel concert with the Steve Miller band who was playing over in Detroit Michigan. The concert supported the Power Play album and it was a second time inside of two years that they played in Cedar Rapids, the first time they were the opening act for Nazareth in front of a sold out house. This was the second time out of 25 times that I have seen them live. Never gets old!
How lucky that you were there that night!! If only Better quality video existed back then. I saw them in ‘78, ‘80, and ‘81 on the First Glance, Harder Faster, and Nature of The Beast tours. Any other details you can share about the concert?? I thought it was cool that all the guitar amps are off stage. I think they might have been one of the first bands to do that.
Yeah, I seen this concert as well, but in Kamloops B.C Canada. Was the first concert I had gone to and it still rocks today as much as it did back then. Love this band!!
I saw in halifax same tour Had t shirt i think still at moms house in cole harbour nove scotia That same year loverboy Ted nugent toronto opend Vn halen i beleave the fools opend Wine a great canadian band ✌🙏🇨🇦👋👍🤘
Absofreakinglutely man!!! Got to see them a few times. The last couple in VERY small venues, one of which you could just walk up to the stage and chat with the band if you wanted. Used Harder Faster and mostly The Whole World's Goin Crazy for PSYKE music when i was getting my hockey equipment on for practices and games when i was 6-10 when i was still getting ready at home. One of the shows was in my hometown because one of the bands members have/ had a place in Montgomery VT and they had a bad flood so April Wine played a benefit concert!!! Was pretty much the coolest thing ever for this AW FAN
Yup, loved April Wine but was never lucky enough to see them live. Had tickets to see Def Leppard open for them in Dallas but couldn’t go to the show and ended up selling them....dumb ass move.
As a old Saskatchewan boy I listened to these guys alot in the seventies and still do. They are a staple of classic Canadian rock radio along with Guess Who, BTO, Chilliwack, the Stamps, Rush and so many more great bands.
The official video for "I Wanna Rock" with the lead singer wearing a Chicago radio station "The Loop" shirt is still one of my favorites to watch. These guys are so charismatic and in sync with each other. Not easy to do with what, like 5 or 6 members?
Saw them at the Prince Albert Rec. Center somewhere around August of 1971 or 72 when I would have been about 14. That same summer Lighthouse and Crowbar came to PA rec. center too. Getting a little misty here tonight.
I saw them on July 4 1978 in Buffalo. Rolling Stones, Journey, Atlanta Rhythm Section and April Wine opening. I had never heard them before. They rocked 80000 people that day.
Ahhh, the Beast of Burden Tour. Now that was one long euphoric day of Musical entertainment. Seeing both April Wine, and then the best version of Journey, ARS was not bad, and then the Stones. Glad we were able to get a motel nearby there was no hour long drive that night happening, damn I am old lol.
April Wine did not have not got the respect they deserve these guys are very underrated !! VERY VER UNDER RATED . THEY HAVE PAID THEIR DUES NOW ITS TIME THEY GOT PAID .
@@bradymerritt7241 yep, Canadian bands didn't quite get the recognition they deserved. It took April Wine quite a while to become big in the U.S. and Europe but they eventually broke through. Rush is the exception, they broke big in the U.S. first and their kickass concert reputation spread quickly
Because they're Canadian? Really? April Wine DID NOT get the recognition they deserve...TRUE. But I dont believe it has to do with them being from Canada. Seems like record companys and promotional management were to blame, IMO. April Wine rules!!!
It is just so satisfying that I can now go back in time on youtube and catch the bands that inspired me and realize I am not crazy. They actually were that good!
I agree, picked up their first album, fan for life. Get Ready for Loving got me laid so many times, the important thing us they all became fans, all 3 of them , over a 5 year stretch. I'm 68 now, we're talking the 70s and 80s folks. But they're good as ever and always will be
@@luvyesmusici4886 #1,2, or 3 don’t make a shit to me. I loved both those bands and Triumph as well, just absolutely music for the sign of the times, the soundtrack of my youth. I don’t compare who is best they all remind me of being young and care-free, no wife/kids just rockin hard as I want like a 21st Century Schizoid Man.
The highlight of this show starts at 23:25 with Jerry Mercer's drum solo. This is Jerry in his prime - beating the hell out of his drum kit with both power and precision. Playing with his sticks turned around backwards (the tips pointed towards his body) makes the sound even bigger! Ending with his signature one-handed snare trade-off that builds to a frenzy! I'm glad I got to see them live just like this in their prime. Jerry was more than just a drummer. HE was an essential part of the sound - and by far the most entertaining member of the band. A true showman!!
Speaking as a drummer and being a lifelong student of the instrument, Jerry Mercer is amongst several mentors-at-a-distance whom I watch and am in complete awe of to this very day. He plays as we see in this video 📹 with passion and precision. Completely relaxed and you can tell this was what he loved to do!
Just saw April Wine in concert tonight! They've only gotten better!! What a grand performance! Amazing talented musicians who know their instruments inside and out. Now that's classic rock 'n roll to the max!!! This band formed in 1969, starting out in Nova Scotia, so long ago. One of Canada's greatest rock bands ever!
Saw April Wine only 1 time, forget the year, maybe 79 or 80 at the Royal Oak Music Theatre in Michigan. Vastly underrated band, never got the respect they deserved here in the States. Could go note for note with ANYBODY. Jerry Mercer was an absolute beast on the drums.
My friends and I used to speak of April Wine in the same breath as Dokken, Dio, .38 Special, Cinderella, etc. April Wine should be more known. IMO those guitar tones are great. We will always love April Wine.
i had the nature of the beast cassette when i was 16. drinking beer and listening to april wine was great times back then. music now is just losers talking to a drum machine.
1980 to 85. April wine, Rush, Triumph, Loverboy and Saga put on the greatest rock shows. Top notch, on point, tight, great sound every time, so professional, totally fan loving. Never saw a bad show, a bad night or second rate performance from any one of them. You had to be there. Grunge and post grunge have no idea what they've missed and what raw, rocking talent is. The rock bands of the 60s, 70s and 80's are the best. The industry turned their back on them and gave us dregs compared to groups of any genre after the 80's. FACT. Bands that could sing and play their instruments. Great bands, great memories.
i wasn't a fan of Loverboy or Saga much, but the others from the 70s yes, and i think there was a void in the 80s because most of the 70s talent was gone by then, and the Bush Gov exploited it by placing in Madonna, who turns out is a far relation of Bush as well as Spears and certain others, and it was done to begin the nefarious Hollywood rap scene. it was also a chance for Bill Gates to have influence that led to downloading which completely destroyed the music business. Robbie Robertson used to like hanging out in Hollywood until he had his life threatened for trying to expose the Bush cult. i have no question Bush were also behind 911 as well as other crimes.
@@rosejones541 well, they're two completely different bands in musical style and technically-speaking and musical chops-wise, Rush are more accomplished for sure. No question about that but April Wine in concert always delivered the goods in hard rockin style. Rush is in a different dimension altogether, simply mindboggling musicianship all around
I stood beside Mr Mercer as he did his drum solo 20 years after this concert. It was the same as this one. Totally awesome. I’m still mesmerized at his talent. The concert I saw and there were many was in Moncton New Brunswick.
Saw April Wine during the Nature of the Beast tour in England. They hadn't sold many tickets for the gig as they were not well known at that point. To their credit they were very professional and put on a great show. Class act.
Jerry mercer is a mutha fuckin animal on a drum kit. What he didn't get more regonition than he did is a mystery to me. he is as good as any of the greatest drummers out there and his solos are ones I can watch and love
Roller got the most radio play. My favorites was gypsy queen and i like to rock. They also used the same studio as rush on i like to rock video. Such a talented band.
I was at this concert. April Wine opened up for Nazareth. Great Concert. I even met April Wine at The Holiday Inn after the concert. Had a beer with them!
I like how th opening bands back then got the same great sound and a gread stage set up as the headliners. Nowadays the egos of the headlining bands get in the way, too afraid they openers might blow they away.
My first April Wine album was On Record. Excellent album, I was hooked. Electric Jewels is definitely an underrated classic imo. And the rest is history lol. Saw them live a zillion times since '72
This band had been putting out albums and their brand of quality rock since the early 70's. They were no newbies and had paid their dues with 10 years behind them.
I saw these guys twice in Houston in the 80s, once with Molly Hatchet and again when they headlined, what an awesome live band, those red Marshall stacks they had were very cool, if you like real, disciplined, bad ass guitar playing this is your band.
AWWWW man!!!! I was at this concert!!! 5 seasons I think it was! Drove all the way from Galesburg, IL several times for shows there! 17 and livin' the dream!!!
April Wine does not get the respect they deserve here in Canada. They cranked out some of the Best 70s rock and were killers live. Gary Moffat is buttery smooth and has been playing those DC Les Paul's since 73, Gerry Mercer is world class on drums and Myles Goodwyn is a great frontman/vocalist/songwriter/guitarist. And, they are all very down to earth guys. Thank you for the music guys. Bless you for the memories. The soundtrack to much of my teen years. If you are not familiar with April Wine, check out Stand Back from 1975. One of the best Canadian rock albums of the 70s. Thank you for uploading this.
Ahhh the good ole days ..when you went to a concert as a teenager and no parents in the crowd just kids havin' the times of their lives ..Peace !!! n Rock On !!!!!
@@technoforever888 yes I lived in Chicago I played guitar in bands band mates would go to every concert always wanted me there . Honestly I never bought a ticket in my life went to over 30 concerts. Rush with backup bands 3 times ,primus,Joe Perry project, I seen 7 times,April wine and nazareth ,1 time seen Ozzy with black Sabbath Toni iomi and with Randy rhodes, seen Genesis, AC/DC, Styx,Reo Speedwagon, triumph seen 2 times , Stevie ray Vaughan ,Kansas,UFO, Michael schenker group, scorpions, kiss, molly hatchet, outlaws,Ted Nugent ,lynard Skynyrd I got around late 70s early 80s never got to see Zeppelin I was definitely lucky.
Holy shit! They were so F'ing Tight! Jerry Mercer steadily Kickin' Arse and his drum solo was very original and so powerful! Myles Goodwin's vocals are legendary, one of the best all-time rock and roll singers. All three guitars were smoking hot, sharing solo responsibilities, then twin and sometimes triple lead parts, brilliantly awesome!!
Yes Sir, before there was Pro Tools.....there were Pro's! April Wine was so tight with their live performance, I'd bet they could do this in their sleep. Smoking hot back in their day.
I saw them a few times. The first time hearing them live was as an 11 year old standing outside the loading doors at the Peach Bowl in Penticton BC. Then I saw them actually live in Calgary, probably on this same tour, and again and again after that. There was no one like them live. NO ONE. The top touring acts of the time paled in comparison IMO. Rest in peace Miles, and thanks for everything.
my first concert ever was April Wine, The Whole World's Goin' Crazy 1976 in Peterborough Ontario, I was only 14yrs old it blew my mind. I saw them several times since then. every time they got better. A band that always sounded better live.
Great Band, Great Concert. You're so blessed to see them perform live. Great song writing, stage presence, sound, vocals, tight, & great musicianship. They deserve the recognition up there with RUSH and Rock n Roll Hall of Fame.
@@shawndouglass2939 True dat! Steve Miller made a mockery of the R&R Hall of Fame and I laughed when Rick Neilson of Cheap Trick says he would have to take out a mortgage just to afford the extra tickets for his family. lol
April Wine and UFO are two incredible hard rock bands that played some legendary shows and made amazing albums and yet somehow the stars didn't quite align and they never got their due.
Only in America, and since America is not the entire Planet, both AW and UFO were big elsewhere. Just like another Canadian Band Saga who did not much in N. America, after their first couple of albums, they were massive in Europe, especially Germany, as well as Puerto Rico etc.
Great underrated band. Nature of the Beast is on my top 20 list of favorite albums. Jerry Mercer is so freakishly underrated. A killer drummer that should be much more recognized.
Great underrated overlooked 70's hard rock band. They used to get quite a bit of radio airplay in the early 80's, but since then they've been mostly forgotten like quite a few other hard rock bands from that era (Triumph, UFO, Pat Travers, etc), which is sad.
this band rocked my youth.saw them multiple times live, once my ears rang for day after standing in front of Brian Greenway's Marshall stacks..they were killer players and great songs.
The thing with Rock'n'Roll is that we all finally come to die, like our beloved Myles Goodwyn John Bonahm, and many others not to be replaced; but the miracle is that they keep moving us forward and inspiring us !
This band kicks some major butt!!!!😄👍😋🙂😀😃😊🎶🎵🎶🎵🎶😎😎 How this band didn't become huge and big and popular in the United States is beyond logic!!!! These guys are awesome live!!!! Kick ass no nonsense Hard Rock!!!! Full of energy!!!!
