I've been been watching these analyses for quite some time now, and as much as I enjoy the actual analyses themselves, I really enjoy the smile you have throughout most of these performances you analyze. I think the fact that you're a fan of music, as well as a musician, is what keeps me coming back. Thanks for that. It's been a rough month for fans of the old Outlaw genre, thanks for this one.

I had the pleasure and privilege and honor to bring Billy Joe (and Eddie) on-stage at a small club in Baltimore when I was Music Director and Midnight DJ at a country station in the 90s. We were playing his current single Honey Bee in mid-rotation (20-25 spins a week). He was genuinely impressed and was excited when I gave him a copy of our playlist. He was one of the humblest and honest persons in the music industry I ever met.

Just read his biography. He had a massive heart attack while performing at Gruene Hall in New Braunfels, Texas. He kept singing songs while thinking he was going to die. He was scheduled to leave for an Australian tour with Kinky Friedman. He told Kinky he was ill and might die. Kinky replied "Well if you are going to die Australia is as good as any." He did the tour and later had a quadruple bypass. Great performer and songwriter.

Such a great tribute to one of my heroes. Billy Joe was one of those ruff around the edges kind of guy. But he such a talented soul. He could make a song sound like it was written just for you. Not many can do that, he could tell your life story in his songs and make you fell that you had written them. Great analysis's Fil, you never miss my friend, your a rarity in this world, you always get it where most people would over look the not so noticeable nuances. Billy Joe was and still is one of those great musicians/songwriters who wrote about every day life and it struggles hardships loves gains and losses, the Good the Bad and the Ugly as i heard him say one time. Great guy he was!!

You provided a great tribute to the late Billy Joe Shaver--eloquent description of him as "a pillard in the music industry." Your analysis of his performance was thorough and very informative. Your mention of Billy's teaching himself to play guitar despite his right hand's missing part of the index and middle fingers was one of inspiration: Billy proved the old adage of "When there's a will, there's a way" and he went far indeed! Billy Joe will be missed but fondly remembered. Thanks for what you do, Fil.

Billy Joe was one mean son-of-a-gun - he took no crap. He never wrote a song that he didn't live. As you covered, he provided Waylon Jennings an entire album of songs (Honkey Tonk Heroes - 1973) and he and Waylon almost got into a knock-down-drag-out during the production because Billy didn't like the way Waylon was "messin' with my tunes", and Waylon didn't like the way "that cowboy was messin' with my head". They worked it out it and remained buddies. Thanks for another great analysis and tribute to Billy Joe.

A fascinating man, your analysis just wonderful. Thanks very much, Fil. I'm thinking about the accident he had, such difficult circumstances. And still he played guitar, and beautifully. I met and got to know for just a little while someone whose whole world when he was young was rockandroll guitar, he had absolutely nothing else. Slept in doorways. He could play and sing exquisitely and was just taking off when he lost the use of a finger. He adapted, became famous/infamous----but his style was wild solos, how did he play them?! I really love the insights of all you who play guitar and comment here, so much to learn!

Classic old country songs which were excellent for teaching guitar with three chord stardard melody.Always wondered about guys like Billy who reached around the right chord strap to play with their right hand. Waylon J did that too. Maybe for really tall men it is easy. I am 5'8" and it would wear on my shoulder. I feel badly for Willie Nelson who has lost close friends (quite a few) recently.
