In the sense most people can't even appreciate all the stuff he does. But those in the know consider him to at the very highest level, so he's properly rated by them.

During the late 50s 60s my dad regularly took me to Ronnie Scotts at first in Gerrard street and then Frith street, we saw most of the essential and hip guitar players like George Benson, Wes Montgomery, Ernest Rangin, Dave Goldberg and many more. As a young boy, and dad's negotiating skills, we were usually allowed at the front. George apologised for singing a couple of songs and hoped the audience didn't mind; they didn't, and he brought the house down, such a lovely man and even shook my hand as did, Wes. These were first time UK performances from most of the players I saw.

I love Mel Torme and Sammy Davis jr. To I think both of them particularly mail or way better than Frank Sinatra in the rest of the Rat Pack although he Martin's interesting on his own level. But George Benson he's just amazing. And Ella I never asked anything from Ella except just to sit there and listen to her I mean I want to sing along with some of the other singers out there but I never sing along with Ella I just want her to sort of fill me with her Musical gift from God. We're so lucky to be alive when we can still listen to these types of musicians and I love this wings of Pegasus guy for giving us these little lessons.

I saw George live in Johannesburg a few years back and drove 600Km to get there. He was spectacular. It featured his hits, but boy, his band kicked ass big time. I'd say it was the most accomplished band I've seen and heard. The keyboardist was doing things I've never heard of, and I've played with some great pianists. There was a lady on percussion, first-rate, of course, who also did a turn on vocals. I'm pretty knowledgeable of harmony, but I can't fathom his chord soloing. Excellent video btw.

His album "Breezin' " was an eye-opener for me. I was 28, and had never heard anything like it (thank you, top-40 radio). Just a fabulous, fabulous singer , guitar player, jazz fusion started in the early 70's and took off thru the 80's and 90's, and that's the direction Jimi Hendrix was moving in... Yeah, having personally watched George warm up from about two feet away..I can vouch for him KNOWING his guitar sound. It's literally an extension of his hands. And he's been playing since the early 50s. I could argue that George might not be the greatest known guitarist , but considering how many recording sessions he's done and who he's recorded with, he might be the best. And no Hendrix couldn't play Jazz.

After fusion there came an era when pop and jazz fused together artists like George Benson , Larry Carlton . Maynard Ferguson and Chuck Mangione toped the charts . The music was more main line then hard core jazz but it was deceptively sophisticated music . I think it was great time in popular music it’s reminiscent of the Louie Armstrong era so long ago when jazz was America’s pop music
