@@HamiltonRb False metric. 3 trillion flies eat shit. Does that mean you should grab a fork and head to the dog walking park? Having that amount of money for what she does is also pretty criminal considering what teachers, nurses, cops and fire fighters take home.
Fil , you're killin' me , Bro' ! First , I couldn't believe you would analyze Miley Cyrus ! Second , that I would actually watch it ! And third , that I loved it ! Every video you produce teaches me something new .
Lol well it's taken me 3 yrs to watch this, yep she's ok, & no doubt would've passed the audition!!.. She just does nothing for me. Thanks Fil I didn't know Dolly was her godmother.
Fil, I really appreciate your input on this particular music video. I had a feeling you would give Miley a favorable review, but the wind factor blew me away. Anyone who can sing live outdoors without a normal microphone is remarkable ! This makes me admire Miley 10 times more !
Fascinating analysis of recording outside vs indoors. You are probably the only guy who could have gotten me to give 20 minutes of my time to listen to MC 🤗
Everyone here, please give a chance to Miley's performance of I'll Take Care of You LIVE at Sidney Opera House. Ignore what she's wearing. Her emotive quality and vocals will give you goosebumps. Also, her covers of Say Hello to Heaven with Temple of the Dog and Nothing Else Matters. Stop judging her harshly.
When a singer tries to sound like someone else, normally intelligibility is the first thing that suffers. Not here. Miley Cyrus' phrasing is great, and every word is very clear. Impressive!
Being a man of a certain age, i didn't exactly follow this gal's career with much attention, but when I saw another song from this session - "Look What They've Done to My Song" - I was seriously impressed. Say what you want about her, but saying she's untalented won't play.
It always amazes me when the haters throw out the untalented word for Miley, Justin Bieber, and any other pop star they love to hate. If you don't like a certain artist, that is perfectly alright. Declaring them untalented is ignorance.
I agree that the vitriol directed at Miley is undeserved. But these days, as long as the public is talking about somebody, it doesn't matter if it's flattering or not. She knows that. There were a few years between Hanna Montana and the Miley we know now where she was trying different things, "throwing everything against the wall to see what sticks." (I remember seeing a somewhat cringeworthy "Smells Like Teen Spirit" on youtube, and some video with a lot of props and effects - I think she had wings or something.) But the big breakout was the tongue and twerking at that awards show. So she went with the crazy hypersexualized persona. It's the era we're in. Kind of a reality TV/sideshow mentality. Maybe if this was 1996 she could just do a Shania Twain-type thing, catchy songs and videos, and that would be enough. Not any more. Strange times we're living in. The latest incarnation of Keith Moon or even Hendrix is probably playing in a dingy club somewhere, not even getting noticed much other than by a small core fan base.
Real artist write there own songs or make hits out of song people don't know she can sing,a lot of people can sing, that isn't all I care about in the music i listen to.
You should react to her singing “I’ll Take Care of You”, a rock version of an Etta James cover FULLY LIVE in Sydney. You will have no doubts about her vocal ability following that.
@@tonymoore9002 I know she has a strong voice but I can't get past her attention seeking, obnoxious little personality. But I do always learn something from from young British Mr. Holland, here ~🤓
I have to say I have compassion for Miley. IMO her father capitalized on her talent and her ability to cultivate a career with her Disney TV show and music. And if you know anything about her history she railed against that and was angry with her father for forcing her to stay on the Disney TV show she wanted to get away from. Her Rebellion is quite natural if you consider that situation first. No one is saying she's Dolly, she's not! No one can ever be Dolly! She is Miley and she does Miley beautifully! I do agree with comments above that she has to play the game of the industry and that requires publicity stunts. To each his own, that being said there is no denying her talent! Fil you always educate me on so many different areas of the music, that myself as a lay person, in production would not know anything about....Thank you!
Oh puleeeeze. Don't have too much compassion for her . Why ??? I don't want to double down diss on her . She is just a young woman. I think she is beautiful looking . But . Oh . Fil has a little crush on her . ???😉
I'm an old man of 56 and I have to admit I love Miley. She has such a great voice and is tailor made for country music. As she gets older I do believe she will naturally move over to the country side for the most part. Watch her and her dad Billy Ray on Jimmy Fallon doing a tribute to Tom Petty...Wildflowers. Just brilliant and Tom would have loved her version. Great video Fil! ROCK!!!
You're a brave man Fil. Taking on a video to analyse which can bring out the negativity and still do this channel justice. It is a shame antics and outrageous behavior overshadow talent and ability. Great job on the breakdown of it and explanation of the recording challenges. Keep up the great work.
Fil you never cease to amaze. Only you could bring someone like Miley Cyrus to this rocking crowd and have us absolutely and immensely enjoy it. I swear you could analyze two musicians banging two rocks together and it would be captivating. Another great one!
@Brad zybola Ha ha ha. That's funny as hell and just like you to say that. How's the weather there in Canada anyway my phone broke and because of my lack of knowledge in the tech world I hadn't saved anything to my SIM card except whatever had gotten fumbled on to it. So then go on ask me something only I would know ..
Great Analysis... She’s very good... Not my genre or taste but she is excellent... I’m concerned about her voice from some stuff I’ve heard that’s more recent... She was exploited very badly when she was young by adults who were supposed to be supervising her... Many people think they would come through the same blender she went through completely intact but just surviving that kind of thing is an achievement... Plus she’s still working and successful into young adulthood... I was watching a video of her when she was a teenager being harassed very badly by the paparazzi... Disgusting stuff... She endured it until they went in on her mother and Miley went off and defended her mother with great intensity, focus and control... I really respected her for standing up and defending her kinfolk in this way... These people are humans at the end of the day.
It should be mentioned..Miley Cyrus is 19 years old here...it was starting to be said then, and it certainly is always said now about Miley and other major talents ....”She sounds better live than recorded..”. It’s True...
The first time I listened to this I thought she'd done a better job covering Lilac Wine (how crazy is that?). I love Miley's voice (it's her own music I can't stand), but I don't like any of her covers of Jolene. It's a polished, tamed version of the original. The lyrics are pretty humiliating, yet Miley doesn't sound like she's pleading. Dolly's version conveyed raw pain, fear and despair, also a sense of urgency and an impressive resolve. It's a weird mix of strength and helplessness, and both get lost in Miley's interpretation.
@@djgreg8198 I came to the same conclusion in another comment I left as a reply 😂 she is -a- Jolene! I enjoyed her performance with Billy Idol as well, she didn't look out of her element for a single moment. I wonder what path she could have taken had she not started her career as a kid with Disney. Personally, I think she would have blossomed in a band environment.
Miley is growing up. Imagine having to grow up and be a stupid teenager in front of the media. I think she's pulled it together very well. I don't appreciate her music but I do respect the hell out of her talent.
Mary, search on YT for her live performances and you will be surprised. She may be awfully annoying and trying to garner tons of attention for her career, but she has a strong voice.
This lyric is simply brilliant: Your beauty is beyond compare With flaming locks of auburn hair With ivory skin and eyes of emerald green Your smile is like a breath of spring Your voice is soft like summer rain And I cannot compete with you Jolene
I think she does sing like this most of the time. Her new VMA Awards live song "slide" does show her complete raw ability no holds bar. She is the real deal and really doesn't need any fluff with that beautiful voice she has and the control she has with it. Fil again you did an absolute spectacular job picking apart all the details of this video and spot on again! I have become a Miley Cyrus fan in the late year. Although I will confess my daughter used to watch Hannah Montana years ago and I thought whoever that girl was singing on that show with a blonde wig was really darn good! Excellent analysis video Tonight fil keep up the good work! ❤
There are some great versions of Dolly and Miley singing Jolene as a duet - there is also an interesting version of Miley with Jimmy Fallon doing a “subway busking” segment for the Tonight Show. She has some real talent - I first heard her when my daughter (who was 3 or 4 at the time) discovered the Hannah Montana show on the Disney Channel. Funnily enough, think one of the first episodes I watched was one where Dolly Parton made a guest appearance and they sang together - which is why I watched. Thought she was a cute kid with some talent and crazy good family connections in the industry who was mostly singing relatively generic songs geared towards the tween market. The post Disney publicity craziness, well, hey - unlike way too many “child stars” who have been in an intense spotlight during their pre-teen and adolescent years, she’s not spending time in prison for multiple felonies nor does she have a frequent customer discount for drug rehab. As far as acting out goes..yeah, know a few folks who have done way worse than gin up some questionable publicity while trying to navigate the transition from teenager to adult. Just thankful cellphones and constant access to recording devices weren’t available when my friends and I were making our own questionable choices. Just something to consider - can’t say she’s my favorite singer ever (she’s not) but the level of vitriol aimed at her in the comments is excessive.
Daryl Hall ( of Hall & Oates ) has a series called 'Live From Daryl's House'. He brings on guest artists, and they sing each other's songs in a home studio. The sound quality is great. One of my favorite tracks is Daryl & Cee Lo Green singing 'I Can't Go For That'. Shouldn't be hard to find, if you decide to check it out.
So many Miley haters. A wonderful musical arrangement and a great vocal performance of Jolene that is a sweet homage to Miley's Godmother, Dolly Parton, who has always supported her. That's good enough for me.
I am the generation older than Miley Cyrus, yet when she sticks to this genre of music, I could listen to her all day. She has an amazing voice and talent.
Not a fan of most of her music, but man what a killer voice. If you haven't seen her cover of 'Happy Together' in her 'Happy Hippie' session, it's equally brilliant. Good job Fil, thanks!
Of all the reactors I've listened to, and I've listened to a lot, you are by far the most informed, open-minded, and fair in your analysis. I normally have a hard time paying attention to videos more than 8 or 10 minutes long, but I routinely listen to you analyses even when they're in the 20 to 30 minute range. Well done, Fil. Rock!
Believe it or not, she has many, many great live performances. She sang with Shawn Mendez at the last Grammy's, as well as her singing with Dolly. She also has done some live rock, in Australia and a couple of songs at the Chris Cornell tribute. I think that would surprise most people.
When I first heard this, I was wonderfully astounded by the huskiness to Miley Cyrus' voice. Great analysis on this track - and on this woman's vocal and life
I never really got into Miley, due to her antics, but I do like Dolly Parton. However, she started to grow on me after hearing her sing this song. She mellowed out and grown up as well. Bravo Fil thanks for yet another great analysis video. You never cease to amaze me with the amount of preparation you do before you analyze an artist! ❤️🤘🏻
I didn't like her especially with the twerking. But then I heard Nothing Breaks Like a Heart. I realised she was a young girl going through a lot of stuff in her private life and acting out. We all go through stuff before we grow up.
I am not a Miley Cyrus fan, but I discovered this video a few years ago and she really killed this song! She also does a killer version of “Look what they done to my song” by Melanie
Miley is still only in her 20's and has reinvented herself a few times already. She started out as Hannah Montana on the Disney Channel and was forced to stay on an extra yr due her father signing a contract on her behalf which estranged the 2 of them. She's done Pop music, what I call "Dare to bare" music and now she's finding herself coming back to her roots. She was a judge on "The Voice " here in the USA for 2 seasons and showed her brains as well as her talent. I didn't care for her antic's but she's growing into who she really wants to be now at 26. This video I believe she helped produce which I can see her doing more of in the future.
Excellent video. Very informative. And as far as Miley, she has a very good voice, a ton of talent, lives life with the knob turned to 11, doesn't care what anyone thinks, has tons of money and seems happy. Isn't that the life all of us musicians inspire to have?
I can respect what she’s doing. It’s a different world. It used to be the squeaky wheel gets the grease. Now it’s the wheel that goes 100mph and bursts into flames gets the grease. She knows exactly what she’s doing. Great analysis Fil ..... as always!! 🇺🇸
Love your analysis Fil ❣ You bring so much musical knowledge and such a fine tuned ear to your comments ❣ I had never seen this video before but this is the Miley I love ❣ Wish she would do a CD of songs like this .. maybe all Dolly Parton songs ... Your work and commentary is flawless Fil and I have subscribed ❣❣❣ So happy I found you ...
Thanks for reviewing this Phil ... one of my favorites .... what a beautiful and talented young woman !! As an aside I met Ms Parton in the 70s here in Canada .... had me sit at her table asking me about my newly born twins and life in general .... she was really interested in hearing about my life and was the kindest most accomodating person I have ever met .... had her manager take me on a tour of her bus !
If she did this song slower with more feeling, it would be spot on. She is rushing through the painful emotion that would help all women connect with this song. This song needs to exude ache.
I vaguely remembered how soulless she was as Stevie Nicks, as I started listening .This was even worse. I left a comment to tell young people to find the real artists, this is horrible.
Miley does an amazing version of Jolene....the song suits her voice well & her country roots helps her to get the right feeling & intonation for this song. When Miley is able to “get out of her own way” & just makes it be about the song & her voice, she’s quite good!
Talented kid. Trying to find comfort with herself..and that is hard when most in the biz are shaking and auto.tuning...and flashing...and selling something other than music. Kid has talent hope she settles into comfort with herself. Cause she has decent chops
Phil, I love your insightful analyses. I'm 68, have zero musical talent, but am devoted to appreciating music from most genres (except opera!). I have 30,000 songs on my computer, and my brother had 60,000 songs and well over $100,000 worth of listening equipment. The information you provide in such a coherent and enthusiastic way elevates my appreciation of everything involved in music. Thank you so very much.
Okay, you explained it...should've watched the whole video before posting. I'm so glad you are doing what you do. I learn so much. It's amazing what you know!
I love her voice, but a good point that what we hear and see are two different recordings. Another great review, lots of interesting info...i agree she is a great talent brought up in the music industry and she is playing it well.
Your analyses of Miley Cyrus shock value is spot on, and when you watched this video you do find her to be a true talent, she can sing. She tends to go up and down with shock performances then back to more conservative videos and songs. She is fighting to stay relevant in music, which when she grows up she will find one can do with talent alone, and again she has the talent.
"Jolene" being one of my favourite songs, when I heard this the first time, I thought it may be too "clean" for an outdoor recording. But I had to listen to it a couple of times to deduce that there's no autotune. Spot-on review as always, Fil and thanks for sharing your experience and knowledge.
He has a very solid knowledge and explains very well. He is also, while being truthful, very diplomatic and respectful of explaining where this was actually recorded. That explains why it didn't quite jive for me from the first time I saw this video, even though I really liked it. now I like it more because that explains the audio discrepancy that I was picking up. Thanks for posting.
I actually like 'The Back Yard Sessions' that she did, and she can decently sing, the shenanigans she gets into to get into the papers are very sad though. I think she can play a couple of instruments, but that is not her demographic, so she just jumps around and shouts. She is just doing what she needs to do to get the sales for the record labels. If you get a chance have a listen to this one - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-aSpkaBeZckY.html - Look What They'ev Done To My Song' from the same sessions... she does have talent, but its hidden behind over production shock tactics in her career... shame really, she could be a legitimate country or light rock artiest if she wanted to be... you may not like her voice or tone, but you can not argue her technique and control is above average...
I can't disagree Ian, even though I do not like her music. Your response is well thought out and presented. You clearly know your stuff so I need to do more research.
Thanks for the reply Tony, I just wanted to point out that she is a talented singer, and works hard at it. She is pushed on one direction (or has chosen this for herself), that make her seem like a topical pop brat, but she defiantly has a good voice has worked on her techniques, if you look up some of her live performances with Adriana Grande where they do a duet live sitting on a couch (not sure of the show it was on) you can see she really can sing (so can Adriana by the way). Just trying to not judge a book by its cover. By the way I am not really a pop fan, I listen to 60s and 70s and 80s country, rock and folk stuff. I also song and play guitar so can attest to the quality in her voice and mastery of the techniques, Fil also admits this in the analysis. hope this helps :)
Ian Shortall, you have to remember one thing. She was a child star who was affected by that whole thing and hopefully she is growing up and out of the nonsense
She 100% nails this - Like her or not, this girl can sing. I've heard a few other versions of this Dolly tune, including Dolly's, and I swear this is my favorite. And trust me, I'm no big Miley fan.
Philip Gior Nah, Miley doesn’t in anyway connect with the lyrics. She sings rote, zero feeling. She swings her skinny arms around (like a wrecking ball) and closes her eyes, but there’s no emotion there. None. Watch Dolly sing it to see (and feel) the difference.
A lot of people hate Miley. How she lives her life and how she behaves is none of my business. I think she’s got a great voice and writes great songs. I don’t think her talent can be denied. I love her new song, Slide Away. I do wish that she could find true happiness, and I hope she doesn’t end up dying of an OD.
She clearly has a good voice, but I felt like I was listening to a young girl showing off, rather than feeling the lyrics. Her tone was way too aggressive making her sound unbelievable.
I am not a fan but I think your opinion is based on what you think of her public persona- young girl showing off, overly aggressive. Rather than how she actually sang here - which was fine.
Liz Arnott the wild antics had a purpose, she had to make a clean break from Hannah Montana. Child stars don’t always make the transition successfully. Shirley Temple is a good example of never being allowed to be an adult. Miley was successful in creating a new her. Hannah is dead, long live Miley. I’m not a big fan of her, but I appreciate how she has handled her career.
@@jimmycampbell78 I am too old to have any interest or knowledge of her current persona. If you listen to Dolly's original vocal she sounds vulnerable. It is my honest and unbiased opinion that this young lady although displaying a fine singing voice should a lack of understanding of the tone and lyrics of the song in this performance. This is perfectly understandable because she is young and cannot relate to the material.
As a sound Engineer, its amazing the difference from having a focused recording where the freq's are absorbed by the padding on the walls. In this video the freq's die out in the wind and trees, which personally for me, makes the sound seem more shallow than the profound deeper sounds in a studio. If it was recorded outside to give a more country appearance, she captured that essence.
Ok Fil..I got an interesting one for you. yes. You mentioned we don’t get a lot of country in the UK. How about Blue Grass ? The early mountain folk of the US would get together and play music and eat. People would ride for a day by horse just to meet up. Many of them were Scots and Irish. Through the decades they came up with their own type of music derived straight out of the mountains I would ask you a favor. You will love it because this group needs no auto tune They are first rate musicians. I know you will appreciate the instrumentals and the female lead singer has an amazing voice. They have stayed together for years and are well respected...oh....everyone gets caught up in awards. Well...a surprise for many. This young lady and her group have 26 Grammys. Yes more Grammys than any other female. Alison Krause and Union Station. the song choice, Forget ABOUT IT Live. I watched them tune up with no speakers because nothing was set up and I was lucky enough to have a pass a day early. just strings and her voice. They were fantastic. I love they have stuck to their roots. please give it a shot.
I'll second Alison Krause. Another possibility: frequent collaborator Dan Tyminski does a version of The Boy Who Wouldn't Hoe Corn recorded by the BBC that is worth watching and listening to. An unbelievable cast of international musicians. Kind of a Bluegrass/Celtic fusion.
What's with all these people claiming to be fans, going to her concerts and yet unable to spell her name properly??? It's "Alison Krauss" folks! It's right there on the concert ticket and her CD' album covers! One "l" , two "s" and no "e"
Went to an Iheart concert in Vegas where they have numerous artists one after the other. Miley Cyrus was one of them and I was surprised at how good she is.
I have a natural aversion to pop stars and pop culture but I must admit Miley has an excellent voice and she nailed this song, I have to give her credit it’s an excellent performance.
She is actually a country singer...being a Disney actor they put her into the pop culture as Hannah Montana and she has been fighting that persona ever since!
I never would have thought about seeing the wind but not hearing it on the mic. I appreciate the explanations and that's another reason that I enjoy your channel.
Great analysis. I love this performance. Miley Cyrus is not given enough credit. Agreed, you don't hear the wind. Or the birds. And thank GOD no Autotune!! Argh I hate AutoTune. I don't care if it's dubbed over a studio recording or whatever. Miley has made a few mistakes in her life, who hasn't? Here she does GodMa Dolly Proud. Beautiful voice, excellent production here. ♥♥
Hi Fil, this is the first time I've heard this track, and I love it! a great talent. I could hear you clearly, blowing gently on your mic, even through my PC, as I know with my camcorder, a gentle breeze turns into a hurricane! Now, armed with your knowledge, I'm going to enjoy a listen through my a/v system. Thanks for another great video.
Besides Miley Cyrus's country roots showing in this song, the background accompaniment is what makes it so exceptional. Taken as an entity, this version of Jolene stands by itself and should NOT be compared to the original as done by Dolly Parton. I'm keen on instrumentals and the accompanying players have produced an exceptional sound that fits perfectly with the way Miley delivers her vocals. This is probably the first time (and the last time) I've seen Miley Cyrus and not pictured her naked and riding a wrecking ball!
Im speechless, for once, Fil! Again, you always do find a way to compliment everyone. So, ill follow suit and say....she should be humbled and thankful that you analyzed this being such a gratious lad and able to seek and establish compliments for the worse of images. Hats off, Fil! You deserve an overdue round of applause!!
Please give a chance to Miley's performance of I'll Take Care of You LIVE at Sidney Opera House. Ignore what she's wearing. Her emotive quality and vocals will give you goosebumps. Also, her covers of Say Hello to Heaven with Temple of the Dog and Nothing Else Matters. Stop judging her harshly. She's a rockstar.
@@dottedlines i dont recall anyone stating she doesnt harness any talent. Her shananigans far outweigh what talent shes able to present. She has done it to herself. Now, she'll never be known for her talents only her public lewd, outburst. A.K.A. a waste of talent. I will give the segments you mentioned a view though..thanks!
I'm a bit surprised at some of the comments. Miley has a fine voice, and yes, she plays the game well. I would just add that this lacks feeling. There's no heartbreak in her rendition. If you want to hear a superior version of this song, you must listen to The White Stripes live version from 2009 in Black Pool. Jack White's performance will rip your heart out!! I'd love to hear you analyze that!!
Fantastic analysis here Fil, I am a big fan of Miley's music. I have her last three albums which have a very broad spectrum of musical genres on them, she really can turn her hand/voice to anything! I was the same as you until I actually heard her singing live and she has a fantastic voice. The public persona might not be the best but as you say she's playing the show! Her albums may look a bit odd in amongst my rock collection but she's there to stay!! Thanks for doing this Fil!
The best version of this song is when she and Jimmy Fallon dressed with glasses,wigs... etc. & went into a New York subway station and started singing... the crowd started to gather and before the 2nd song they took off the wig & dark glasses and the crowd went crazy.... check it out,it has like 17million views ☺ Some of her songs are ok but.... not really my style but that's why I like this channel Fil you play abit of everything.... mostly classic rock and that very cool 😎🎸 but I'll give any kind a music a shot cuz you'll never know if you like it till you hear it ! Thank you Fil & keep up the great work ! 😎🤘
Where I live I often go and watch bands, mostly local. All sorts. Many of them play really well, but, and it is a big but, hardly anyone can sing well. Sad fact is - I think they think they can. This girl is just so natural.
Fil, I'm surprised you didn't touch on one thing...the pacing. Miley "rushes" the song and it makes it difficult for her to put some of the phrases together properly. She's supposed to sound like she's talking to "the other woman." Where in normal conversation, a phrase would have a bit of a pause, she didn't have time to put in the pause. Dolly's version is slower, so the lyrics are paced properly. Miley's version sounds like she's singing lyrics and trying to get them all in, so the vocals don't fall behind the music. It's supposed to be a sad song...a lament. Miley sings it like a rock ballad.
Fil, as always you did a great review. It took me a bit to figure out she wasn't singing. She's not my cup of tea, but if she stayed in music like this, maybe I would. She'll never be as good as Dolly. Thanks for this.
It is only my respect for you that I would view anything by Miley Cyrus. I admit to watching your entire video just to hear what you had to say about her. I was pleasantly surprised to listen to your comments about how the video was made/produced and how things we think may be true, like how her video is really done on the fly outdoors, is really not totally true but not totally false either. I was also thrilled to hear your explanation about how necessary it is for her to "play the game" to be noticed in today's music industry. It explains a lot about how the whole old "song and dance" goes these days. I don't like her type of music but she has a lovely voice and knows how to use it. As usual you were very respectful in commenting on the talent, the music and on the production and not on your personal views of the person. Well done.
Thanks Fil! Great educational video, and thanks for a great explanation as to why my outdoor videos always have lots of rumble rumble growling sound :(
Phil I love your Analysis of this performance Your knowledge of producing and your talent as an artist your wisdom is well beyond your years great great job 👏🏻 This video is 10 out of five stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Best wishes to you always from Las Vegas Craig I’m going to share this video with my family and friends who I know will do the same Bravo 👏🏻 ✅😇😊
