Yeah, that didn't make sense to me when I first heard it, and it still doesn't. He was a master writer but there were moments, such as these, when he showed he didn't understand the "more" that is.
@josef mengele he's referring to youth. Feeling immortal. The opening line of the chorus is "we are young, wandering the face of the earth...learning what our dreams might be worth." It the immortal state of mind we all have when we're in the prime of life.
We have the National Music Centre here in Calgary, Alberta and indeed, one of Neil's drum kits is on permanent display. It is downtown at 9 Ave and about 4 St. SE. You can't miss the place once you get close. I think at least one (if not more) of Geddy Lee's bass guitars is also on display. His collection is vast. Really. I'm not sure if Alex Lifeson has placed any of his electric guitars on display there but there probably is at least one.
Heard this on the radio in the car this morning. The place I discovered RUSH. I pulled over and cried. His drumming and writing were transcendent. The world is a lesser place.
I once heard an interview with Geddy Lee and he was asked who’s the best musician in the band and without much of a thought he said Neil. That coming from one of the greatest Bassists ever
Also read an interview with Eddie Van Halen and the interviewer asked what its like being the worlds best guitarist at the moment he replied ''don't know ask Alex Lifeson. :)
Neil was a private person who never sought the limelight, just a working man committed to his craft; who saw himself as a continuous work in progess. What an incredible intellect. What an incredible loss. RIP Neil.
Neil Peart the professor not only was he a fantastic drummer an extremely talented musician. He was also a decent human being so much heartache and his life my mom also died of brain cancer it was absolutely horrible. R i p Neil Peart thanks for all the good music thank you for the great review fil.
He had so much grief in his life. He was never the same after losing his Wife n Daughter in a car accident. It took him yrs to get back to making music with the Band. I've never seen Neil smile after that tragic accident. Music and religion was the only thing that kept him going I believe?
@@crusheverything4449 my mistake. I know when he lost his wife n daughter in the accident he went into seclusion. I remember hearing something about him converting to something or another. I assumed it was religion. Thanks for setting me straight!
My grandmother and great aunt died the same way. Terrible 😢 Imagine having a migraine for three years. ❤ Thank you for your tribute Fil. You reactions are always great. R.I.P. Professor.
I lost my dad from cancer that metastasized to his brain. My dad became aggressive in the last month although he had no idea he was acting so out of character. It was terrible to go through and from then on after his death I take everyday as a blessing as we can doing ok one moment and the your life can be shattered in a moment. I give to a cancer charity and also to a hospice where my dad lived the last couple of weeks. The staff there were incredible and made a huge difference not only to my dads life but they carried so much of the weight which was killing me at the time. They taught me how to grieve-a life skill which helped me more than words can ever say. Without them I would of collapsed just from the pain and anguish that I could not bare. I will never forget them.
Great lyricists.. Man of character and Integrity. He was always professional and carried himself well. Class act.. high brow artist. Always pushed himself to better his craft until the end. A beast on the kit

Catherine Fraser , I love that he always wanted to keep learning.. that just is so awesome . That’s why he is so good and made him humble. I actually enjoyed this, too...
That line from their song Tom Sawyer comes to mind : "Exit, the warrior..." Thank you, "Professor", for decades of fantastic music and being a class act through it all. I love you.
Just three rocking dudes doing their own thing. Staying true to themselves until the world came to them, and we did and we loved them for it. Thank You Phil your a Class Act All the Way.
Everyone is so right!! Neil Peart was my inspiration to start playing drums!! He was such a Genius,a Gentleman, intelligent, life time student,to me,"the greatest!!" The king of time signatures,(as @ Michael Convery said so perfect!! From the beginning to the end!! A human Metrodome!!) 2 last things that i didn't see mentioned!! I've seen 6 RUSH Concerts.. Talk about ENDURANCE!! He played for over 2 and a half hour's, on every single concert.. And last!! Any Drummer that very well known!! Being invited to play at so many different places!! For example,"Buddy Rich'es daughter, asking him twice,to play for a memorable Buddy Rich Event.. And Neil Peart was always,a very Humble man!!! RIP PROFESSOR!!!!! YOU'RE NOW A LEDGEND,THAT WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!!!!!
Love Ginger Baker. Neil is my #1 but I like Moon, Peart, Bonham Bill Ward and Ginger Baker. Hard for me to put them from best to worst. I like them all in their own way.
Ginger was so talented, but a different breed, when I saw him live he had the simplest trap kit of any drummer...snare, kick, a couple toms and the ride and crash... Neil, otoh, was surrounded by a sea of drums. Both were amazing.
When he joined the band he started writing the songs for the band and Geddy did the arrangements. I saw them in 74 in Soo, Ontario shit I was 10 years old and did my first hit of mescaline that night. Best night of my existence!
Greatest Rock N Roll drummer in the world. An innovator who took his craft off this Third Stone From The Sun and played in high orbit. Loved riding his motorcycle. A love I share, we both buried a child. I survived a brain tumor 3rd ventricle right side Forman of Monroe. Neil, Alex and Geddy were always polite and approachable. He was a friend. Rest Easy Neil Rest Free, for you are now where one day we'll all be. Thy load now light, thy tasks now done. Thy battles with cancer now won. Rest Easy Neil, Rest Free. ✌ \m/🍻 Thank you Fil.
Hi Fil! My son took drum lessons for years, and became very good....I remember him having RUSH music in the house, and I heard all about Neil Peart! My son thought he was the best drummer anywhere! I was sorry to learn of his passing...this drummer had such a positive influence on kids becoming drummers! My son is still a drummer, and he uses his talent at his church! Thanks for showing this talented guy!
Being such an inspiration to drummers of all ages and abilities is his greatest legacy, more even than the music and lyrics he has left for us all to enjoy.
There is a video of Neal somewhere on RU-vid where he recounts meeting a parent who said he inspired her son to play the drums. Neal laughed, and said "I'm sorry". The house where a young drummer lives is not a quiet place. My older brother played drums, and the house was very noisy. He was always going around, drumming on everything.
Neil's lyrics spoke to me like no others. Rush touched me like no others. This death has affected me differently than any other. Goodbye our Canadian Clockwork Angel. The world is not as bright as before. May he Rest in Eternal Peace.
I saw Rush numerous times over the last 40 years and it was always a highlight to see Neil Peart live just a few feet away. I was too young to see Led Zeppelin but for those that did...I now know how you felt when John Bonham died.
Jesse Swarbrick - Who cares what the self-professed “biggest whore in the world” has to say about a band that could outplay his with their hands tied behind their backs? Rush was the Canadian Rush.
A Canadian Rock Icon, an integral part of our great Power Trio, Rush. Amazing drummer and lyricist for Geddy and Alex. 40+ years together, giving us the soundtrack of multiple generations. THAT’S a legacy to leave behind. 🇨🇦🤘🤘
A prog rock band with a string of continuous best selling albums behind only The Beatles and the Rolling Stones. That just boggles the mind. 40 years of supreme musicianship underpinned by the lyrics & drumming of Neil.
Hands down one of, if not THE best. There's many drummers in the running for number one, but I don't think now is the time for debate. Neil is one of a kind, and he's inspired too many people to begin to mention. Great musician, great drummer, great human being. It's so sad that we've gotten to that point when we're losing so many beloved musicians. Rest in peace, Neil Peart. We'll hold you even "closer to the heart" now.
It's sad that he is gone now..but part of me is happy that he is no longer in pain or suffering.. Cancer sucks.. Thankfully we have his music to console us in our time of grief.. Thanks Fil, for the respectful, intelligent perspective of such a amazing man.. Rip Neil..you were definitely one of a kind..
Just. Wow! Rest In Peace. You are truly the Greatest of All Time! Thanks for the beats, the timeless music, and being such an amazing talented musician! You will never be forgotten. Sad day for the music world. Thanks Fil!!!!!!!!!
So sad, I heard about his passing last night and that he passed away a few days earlier on Jan. 7th which is my birthday also. I have been to a lot of Rush's concerts and like everyone used to say and I agree is the fact that three men could put out such powerful great music. Neil was a perfectionist and it showed his solo drum performances were a show in itself. I read his books very interesting intelligent man. Even though he got a second chance in life, I don't think he was ever the same when he lost his first wife and child, I hope they are all together now and are at peace. We all will miss you Neil, what a legend , great talent , great man. RIP:(
This is what long time friend Of Neil Peart's Kiss Drummer Peter Criss had to say on the loss of his long time friend. Original KISS drummer Peter Criss has paid tribute to RUSH's Neil Peart, who passed away on Tuesday (January 7) in Santa Monica, California after a three-year battle with glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer. Criss took to his web site to write: "It is so devastating to say these words... I am so deeply saddened by the death of one of my brother drummers and dear friend. Neil was a hero to all of us drummers. He was a great man and a great musician. My heart goes out to Alex and Geddy for their loss and all the family, friends, and fans . May he rest in peace and be met by the lord in heaven. God Bless, Peter Criss" Several years ago, Criss said the first time he heard Neil's drumming was when RUSH opened for KISS in the 1970s. "Their [original] drummer just left," Peter said. "It was [Neil's] first night, I believe. He was amazing - so inventive." Peter added: "I love to watch Neil play. He is also a great songwriter. We just think he's one f'in great drummer!!! "If you really want to see what the drums are about... just go see Neil play.
Very nice. Rush gives Kiss a lot of credit for showing them the ropes early on and teaching them its a business and how to manage life on the road. Funny pair of friends considering the difference in their styles and shows.
STYX played "Limelight" last night, 1/10, in honor of Neil. It was subdued, chilling, in total reverence to the legend. Check it out, I had trouble holding it together...
Have watched 6 or 5 'tribute' vids already about neil and I am in the camp of , that he was the bestest greatest drummer in the history of ever,,,and if he is not , he is in the top 2 , Also the best comment I have heard is that , whoever is your fave drummer ,Neil was their favorite drummer. Thank you Fil for this
Thanks from my heart for doing this Fil. Canada's greatest drummer and gentleman & the world lost one of the greats. My heartfelt sympathies go out to his family and to Geddy & Alex. Rush is one of the greatest bands IMHO.
The epicness of Neil. "I have achieved all I can imagine on my instrument." The sheer omnipotence to achieve that, and to admit it, is who Neil was. Fil, thank you so much for your respect, and pure accuracy of who our hero was. I believe youre just as much of a treasure.
The thing that gets me every single time I see this is right before the tradition sticking, his hands and his feet are running two separate tempos that always come back together at a specified point. He will always be referred to as "The Professor"!
Watching him do that live, in the middle of a screaming crowd, is one of the memories I will treasure forever. Have seen them on every tour in the UK since 1988. Absolutely amazing. The world is not the same without Neil Peart.
Like a meteor hit....that's the impact Neil's passing and legacy is and has....I was honored to have seen Rush in 1975 on the Fly By Night tour...front row seats at a small theater in Fresno, Ca......absolutely incredible!...a few yrs later I saw one of Neil's heroes... the late great Buddy Rich at a even smaller theater in my hometown... ..EPIC and BIBLICAL is the only verbiage I can describe for both shows....
Thank you Fil for recognizing Neil. Your appreciation for great artists and art is what brings me back. We will miss you Neil...for what you left us and for what was possible.
What a profound loss of a great drummer, musician and person. Fil, you handled this analysis with the sensitivity and respect that he deserved. Hats off to you and thank you for that...
Fil, I heard the news yesterday afternoon about Neil. A friend of mine texted me that he had passed away, not knowing how special Neil was to me. I am not ashamed to say, I burst into tears. It was like getting punched in the gut. He was the absolute epiome of a drummer, and a hero to me. Thankfully I was able to see him play this exact solo in around 2004, and I was mesmerized. The level of musicianship in Rush is almost too much to comprehend. Neil was a very private person as you know. I can only hope that his family is given the space they need mourn.
I must have watched this performance 100 times or more. Neil was so stunningly good as to be uneblievable. As a guitar player, I would have traveled around the world to find a drummer this good. I would have loved to have seen him and John Bonham sit down and have a chat. Imagine that conversation. Wow!
Hey Greg, This is James, are you still teaching classical guitar at Cornish? When you have time shoot me an e-mail and let me know what you are doing these days. Take care, James
Mr P., you were my teacher, motivator and inspiration for me playing the drums. I’ve listened to you since 1975. I still remember hearing 2112 for the first time and my jaw dropped. I’ve never heard playing like that up to that point. I was shocked when I heard of your demise. I’m still trying to process it. I pray that you’re with your first wife and daughter in heaven. Thank you for so many years of pure musical bliss. There will never be another drummer/lyricist like you again. Your brain was as big as your heart. We love you now and forever.
I have never been able to pick favourite songs from bands with so many great songs, however, “The Pass” is certainly one of their best songs. I listened to it yesterday, along with others, in honour of Neil.
I wasn't aware of Neil's death until I watched this video today. He was a fine musician, top player, and a force of nature. What strength of spirit to walk through such tragedy. I can't imagine anything more devastating than the loss of one's child. When I watch drummers, I look to see whether they're deriving their power and dynamics from their wrist motion rather than flailing their arms all about. The economy of unnecessary motion enables them to be much faster, more accurate and consistent, and enables them to utilize crescendo stroking and give a very dynamic performance. That and four way independence places him in an exclusive group of master musicians. I enjoyed the video, and I am saddened by the news. RIP Neil.
The world has lost a wonderful person, masterful drummer and a kind human being, but Neil will live on as a legend in our hearts and minds. He played a big part in and touched many, many lives, and I was fortunate to have him and Rush as a part of mine growing up. Respect to his family, Geddy and Alex. Rest in Peace, Neil. We will always love you and remember you. Thank you, Fil, for sharing this excellent performance of my favorite drummer, Neil Peart.
Neal Peart, what a Drum Master, he was the driving force behind 'Rush', one of the greatest drummers on the planet, Rip Neil, you will be missed..... Great analysis on Neil, Filip, i had heard pretty much the same thing, also his writing of songs for the group, a very, very talented musician....
Neil left a footprint on this world that will live forever....A true musical genius!!! I hope and pray he inspires our youth to be as amazing as him.... Much love..
Who in the world thumbs down this video? Well done, Fil. Done with knowledge and respect. I enjoy all of your videos but this one is special to the fans of this great man.
Who here thinks that Phil looks like another lost artist, the late great Bon Scott? Thank you for making this video. Rest in peace with your wife and daughter Neil.
Thanks Fil . Wow impressive indeed , it’s amazing, which makes it so much more appreciative ,when you explain, just how much work , and limbs , go into his performances . Well he’s rocking in paradise somewhere. Lots of work ! Holy My eyes are are over the place, lol. RIP Neil Peart ! One of a kind, for sure ! ❤️🇨🇦❤️ For anyone who hasn’t been to Massey Hall ,the Acoustics are killer .
Good analysis, Fil. Neil was a phenomenal drummer. I once hear him say, “I wasn’t talented. I was relentless!” He was always trying to improve his technique. It shows!
Fil, I’ve watching a lot of Neil Peart isolated drum tracks. Because of the nature of Rush songs, stops and starts, tempo and key changes, would it be fair to say that Neil did not improvise very much? Or the rest of the band for that matter.
He lost his wife and daughter and now his new wife and daughter lose him. He occassionally used traditional grip for some sections of some songs since the early days. You can see it in Xanadu (Exit... Stage Left) and Fly by Night (official video).
FIL, THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR HONORING MY HERO, YOU BEING A GUITARIST, YOUR COMMENTS ON A PERCUSSIONIST, ARE OUTSTANDING, YOU ARE A GENTLEMAN AND A WALKING ENCYCLOPEDIA, I WAS FORTUNATE TO MEET NEIL BACK IN THE 70;S IN DETROIT, A GREAT FEW MINUTES IN MY LIFE THAT I WILL NEVER FORGET. NEIL WAS NOT JUST A DRUMMER, HE HAD AN ORCHESTRA OF PERCUSSION INSTRUMENTS, AND PLAYED THEM ALL. I LOVE THE REVOLVING STAGE, TO WHERE HE HAD 2 KITS AT HIS DISPOSAL, I LOVE YOUR BUDDY RICH STORY, I HAVE BEEN WATCHING VIDEO'S OF NEIL FOR 2 DAYS NOW, AND I AM STILL DRYING MY EYES, I CAN NOT BELIEVE THAT HE IS GONE, HE WAS VERY SPECIAL TO ME, HE WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN, THANK YOU AGAIN FOR THIS , YOU HAVE THE BEST YOU TUBE CHANNEL, COUSIN FIGEL
I can't believe how much this is affecting me but my dad passed away from the same thing. Stirring up a lot of feelings that I thought I dealt with Long ago.
I feel like we need to find the causes of cancer not the curethe American government and I'm sure many other governments are poisoning their people is called slow kill it's in the vaccines it's in the food it's in the air in the chemtrails it's in everything never race for the cure never give money for the cure.. ask why so many people are gettingcancer I'm very sorry for what your father went through and for what Neil went through for anybody's afflicted by this horrible disease I'm a Christian so I'm going to pray in Jesus name may the Lord bless you and comfort you in the times of sadness and loss
My advice to everyone is to go see the bands you love before they are gone. David Bowie, Jethro Tull, Rush are just a few I've had the immense pleasure of seeing live. R.I.P. Mr. Peart.
I have watched so many analyses and reaction videos to Neil Peart over the years and even though this was really just another in a long line of them, I still had to watch. I'm one of those fans who just isn't ready to let him go. A beautiful and kind, generous soul who was a superb talent the likes of which the world will never see again. Thanks for doing this. Love you Neil. Class dismissed. 😪🥁🇨🇦
I heard Neil talking about how he started to get discouraged in his younger days because he could not imagine ever being able to play like Buddy Rich, then he said he eventually realized that NOBODY could play like Buddy Rich...... Buddy was one of a kind, and Neil certainly was as well..... Farewell to a king of drummers and a humble, outstanding human being who basically taught me to play drums. His example continues to inspire me to try and play like him....... So glad we had the privilege to enjoy what he shared with us all......
Thanks for the awesome video on Neil Pert! I never met Neil, but I can't pretend the stranger Isn't one of my dearest friends!!!!!!!..... He helped make music that made perfect sense to me. RIP Neil!
Mr. Peart was one of the best drummers I have ever heard. I am so sad to hear of his passing. I am sure his fellow band mates are just beside themselves. Rest In Peace. Thank you for covering this piece.💕
Excellent analysis of arguably the finest rock drummer/musician to sit behind a kit. The solo is a tour de force, but that double crossover at 16:20 is nonpareil.
Neil wrote the greatest lyrics in rock history and also composed the greatest drum parts in rock history. Your stocisim, genius, integrity and passion will always be with us, and will inspire future generations. Hopefully through 2112 and beyond.
Thanks Fil,I saw Rush 8 times and was never disappointed, always spot on and a great show. In my opinion, Neil was the greatest drummer ever, a real legend, yet such a humble man.RIP Neil.I can`t imagine what it takes to drum at his level for a 3 hour show, simply incredible!!
Devastating, crushing news for this Neil Peart fan. As a fellow drummer i of course worship at the alter of Peart; but it was Neil's lyrics that really spoke to me and touched me the most. I was in the habit of bringing Rush lyrics for my Literature and English professors to read. Needless to say they were very impressed. Thanks Neil for sharing your gifts with the world.
As a 63 year old Rush geek, you really did a solid for Neil and helped me smile with the homework you did...you were pretty much "spot on"! Thank You Fil and RIP Neil Peart.....
I love how Neil used all different general's of music in his drum solo, He was such a musical drummer and composer, Some people don't appreciate just how original his approach was never mind how technically perfect he was he never overlooked how important Flow and space were to the song he was drumming in. A true innovative one of a kind. He is the mozart of drums and percussion.
