Wanna know what's funny. He would do exactly that. While on tour, at every stop Randy would find the best classical guitar instructor and have him come to his hotel room to give Randy a lesson. That's no joke. He also told Ozzy that he was going to quit after his last tour. He wanted to be a Professor in Classical guitar. Oh, and Randy was bangin' Sharon. It was before her and Ozzy got together.

What really sucked was being a student next to randy. He was at a very prestigious classical music school and randy and this one other dude(forgot his name obviously). They were neck and neck so to speak they both new only one hit it big for some reason but when randy auditioned for ozzy, ozzy said it was like god coming into his life when he heard randy play...

Hello Fil. I enjoyed your commentary on this. I would just like to say that I was a cameraman on this studio shoot at WUHF for the After Hours show (you can see me on hand held camera behind the drum kit in a couple shots) and all the guys were really great. Ozzy in particular was just a very nice gentleman. I remember him being very quiet. Of course we didn't know at the time that we were recording some of the only existing footage of Randy. You know…when my fiancé passed. Randy’s niece whom he never met. (Kathy’s daughter, Jenna)reached out to me on Fb and sent a very nice message to me. Knowing how much her uncle meant to me. As his (no 1) fan :p It meant a lot. I have been attempting to play his music since I was 14 I’m now 30. I also knew that her family had to deal with Randy’s death. As a guitarist dealing with grief. it felt like Randy’s soul, through his family member, was consoling me in Lauren’s passing. What great people they were. I always wanted to play Dee for Delores whom Randy wrote the song for, but never got that chance.

I like how Randy's solid knowledge of music theory really showed in his riffs and solos. Like in this song in particular, how he plays off the concept that every major key has a relative minor. He effortlessly weaves back and forth between A major and F sharp minor and has such a melodic flow and smoothness about it all. It's a testament to how dedicated he was to his chosen craft.

Randy Rhoads died in the plane crash the day before my birthday in 1982. I already knew who he was, along with Ozzy. I grew up in Metro Detroit, and my Uncle Mike played in a garage band with some of his buddies, and they played Rock. By the late 70's they had me turned onto Black Sabbath, Hendrix, Cream, Led Zeppelin, Queen, The Who, The Stones, and others. Ozzy was, and still is my favorite, and Randy Rhoads in 1981-82 was my favorite guitar player. Since then I have seen Ozzy reunite with Black Sabbath in concert, I have seen Dio with Black Sabbath in concert, and have seen Ozzy solo in concert a number of times. My favorite Ozzy moment in concert was at Irvine Meadows Amphitheatre, March 28th 1992. The band played songs from the Randy Rhoads days and also songs from the "No More Tears" album they were supporting. The show was OFF THE RAILS, AMAZING! and at the end of the show, Ozzy invited the crowd up on stage...CRAZY! So me and my buddies crashed our way to the stage and made it up there with Ozzy and the band...IT WAS MAYHEM! I actually got to put my arm around Zakk Wylde for a second while he was playing. It was Awesome! but I wish it was Randy. R.I.P. Randy Rhoads, your guitar and music artistry and influence will last the test of time! thanks for the video again...I'll watch more.

He was the MC that night. As he listened to me play Arpeggios -he started to open up about how much he enjoyed my playing but also how he missed his son.He said it was painful when they had to sell the house he grew up in.He had to clean out the bedroom with the baseball bats and skateboards etc. He was a very kind and misses his son.Was very sad but a pleasure to spend time with Randy's Dad as well.

You had a supposed has-been Rockstar singer, two veterans and a rookie guitarist who came together to create two of the most iconic Hard Rock/Heavy Metal albums in music history..and yes Ozzy knew what he had in Randy...Randy helped resurrect Ozzy's career,But the Music business is a nasty business....Just look at it this way. When Randy announced he wanted out,he was neck deep in the Diary of A Madman tour, the album was a smashing hit, had already seen Lee and Bob get screwed from the royalties and get kicked out before the US tour of Blizzard,he probably didn't like THAT side of the business,Ozzy and Randy had a fistfight during a breakfast over this-his planning to leave-,Sharon had backed Randy into a corner and "REMINDED" him of his legal contract to stick around.. he agreed to do one live album and one studio and that was it... Later when he passed Kelly Garni says that Sharon flew to Cali. 24-48 hrs after Randy passed to change the contract to avoid paying his family the royalties he was due. The family took OzzyCo. to court and they backpedaled to move.......

Just watching Randy play is mesmerizing. He didn't even look at the neck/fretboard. His fingers just automatically glided to where they were supposed to go. I've been a Randy freak for many years and I think he would have come back to playing rock even if he left Ozzy. I could see him putting together a group of his own and doing projects of various kinds of music. And I have to say this, even though Randy died way too young and he had so much more to give us, I don't think Jake E. Lee gets enough credit for replacing Randy and playing some great guitar of his own to keep Ozzy's musical career going. Jake was his own man and was different than Randy, but his playing was very impressive and kept Ozzy relevant when Ozzy could have hung it up and never played again after Randy died. Jake's playing on the first Badlands album is some of the best playing I've ever heard. He didn't have Randy's charisma, but the music was right there with Randy's, and Ozzy should be grateful that Jake helped him to make that transition after Randy.

Out of all the proto-metal chops guitarists, Randy is my favorite. His harmonic choices just speak to me. The way he weaves in and out of standard blues guitar stuff and classical lines.. it’s just incredibly inventive for the time. And like all the greats, it’s emotive. Some chops guitarists it starts to sound like typing fast instead of music. But not his solos, always sounds like he’s fighting for every inch of that guitar and winning. Sad we didn’t get to hear more from him 💙

For me the difference Randy had from the other early Godly eighties guitar players (except Prince and Eddie van Halen) is that he was so bold (I have never been a Yngve Malmstein fan, the man is a guitar god, but he seem so unattached to his chosen craft). And I do believe that his classical background dared him to be bold. The man knew his way around a guitar. So sad he was taken away from us so early. He had perhaps 50 years more of music to give to the world.

Great discussion and comments. Randy doesn't quite get the accolades he deserves next to the true pioneers like EVH and Hendrix. Probably due to the limited production because of his tragically short life. For my money, he was on par with those guys when it comes to delivering a groundbreaking, genre-influencing sound and style to the electric rock guitar. When you dropped the needle on those first Ozzy solo records, it was truly something that blew you away! A fresh, explosive sound and style that made you say 'WOW'! The only things close to having the impactful, game-changing guitar sound of the Ozzy/Randy debut were probably SRV's Texas Flood and Satriani's Surfing With The Alien. Nothing has come close since then....at least not for me.

Ozzy's career up to just before teaming up with Randy was monumental with Sabbath but after Sabbath he was on the verge of being a washed up, drugged out has been. I believe it was the iconic and enthusiastic playing of Randy that pulled Ozzy from the ditches and helped resurrect and prolong the career of Ozzy. If it wasn't for Randy, I believe Ozzy wouldn't really be here today or at the very least, he would be someone living off of his classic 70's heavy metal reputation. Ozzy had success after Randy's tragic death but it wasn't close to what he achieved with Randy. Randy helped extend the relevancy and longevity of Ozzy's career. Yes, I am sure Sharon Osbourne had a lot to do with it too but hooking up with Randy, after his Sabbath days, was the best thing Ozzy could have done!! Long Live Randy!. I agree about the Genre switch and his style. I do wish Randy had used a less "raw" sounding distortion technique and I think over time (and you can hear it on Diary of a Madman) he would have. I'll tell you a secret that I found out from an old friend of mine who got to meet Randy back in late 1981. This is not something Randy told my friend, it is an observation that my friend made. You heard it here first! Everyone always attributes Randy's distortion sound to his MXR Distortion pedal, but have you noticed that no one has been able to fully emulate his sound? Randy used to push in his wah pedal and leave it in the "toe down" position for some of his rhythms. That's why he had such a "raw", high pitched distortion sound. If I run my Les Paul through my Dunlop GCB95 Cry Baby Wah pedal, into my Boss DS-1 Distortion (Keeley Mod) pedal, then through my Boss CE-5 Chorus, into my Marshall and step on my Wah pedal and leave it in the "toe down" position, my "Crazy Train" sound as much like his as can be without the overdubbed guitar tracks. So, now you know. I also use a DD-7 Analog/Digital delay pedal, and a Boss Suppressor Pedal, but Not turned on for this sound. Remember, You heard it here first.

The MXR Distortion + pedal in front of a Marshall JCM 800 50 watt head and 4x12 cab is a killer sound (and was my sound back in the 80's). I recently bought another one of these amps and cabs, but I've yet to look for a vintage Distortion +. Regardless of the gear, you won't sound like Randy because a great deal of his tone was in his playing, not due to pedals or amps.

@Seth Ferguson Seth Ferguson ah, but see, you are talking about his live setup. I'm talking about his studio sound. I don't think he did it all the time, but he wanted a really rough live sound in the studio. On the studio versions you can even tell they had to cut the tracks or you would hear a shitload of feedback everytime he stopped playing. I wasn't trying to score any points for this, just going off what my friend told me, and I have set up my gear exactly as described and it sounds almost exactly like his sound. It used to annoy me that his guitar sound wasn't more refined like other guitarist of that time, like for exanple, Eddie Van Halen. It's really hard to get the same sound without getting the exact equipment he used. My Les Paul is a ESP (LTD) series EC-401 Floyd Rose edition, and it has EMG active pickups. Randy used a Marshall Plexi which gave him that tone too. Anyway, with that same setup I've learned how to play "Diary of a Madman" and I had to crank back the chorus and tone a little and turn up tje delay. I'm sure there are hundreds of ways to get his sound, or close to it, with completely different equipment, so I really enjoy talking about it.

I've only watched a couple of your videos, but our opinions seem very similar. I 've always loved how Randy could blend his awesome rythem with his kick ass leads without missing a beat. You're right. 3 man band with a ton going on. Fun stuff.

Randy had the best tone. You could tell Ozzy was so proud to have Randy riding shotgun.

Pity Randy's studio tone was quite poor and very dated especially compared to EVH's studio tone. After listening to the Tribute album, I just can't listen to his studio sound.

@@hesch-tag Randy had to this day solid memorable Tone for days ...It came out more proper than most every one else before and after Randy couldn't be faded...I would like a reference of how you say he didn't get recorded well enough cuz the shit sounded above the rest day one till now

Let us not forget Rudy. Wow and watch Tommy here. Beyond filling in this song. But yes Randy is beyond it all. Saw him live. Never forget it.

Scott Kraniak Yes, the way Rudy licks his fingers during key moments of the song is incredible 😏

Is this daisley or sarzo? Daisley practically wrote all of ozzy's songs and got no credit

Rudy and Randy were tight together from being in Quiot Riot in the seventies that added a lot to the quality on this particular performance.I was very fortunate to have seen this line up just about a month before Randy died R.I.P Randy
