It’s the put o wreath upon his door. An old tradition, if someone in the household died a funeral wreath would be hung on the door. I have trouble listening to this song even though it’s beautiful. It’s so sad ! A man who loved a woman he couldn’t have carried that love to the grave and perhaps beyond! You’re right this song is heartbreaking! If I’m already depressed I can’t listen to it !

@@kensod6034 in the south they put one on the casket. Before lower the casket family and friends take a flower from it.most put in their bibles after flower dries out. My wife passed away February 24 2021 she had purple flowers her favorite colors. She was 53 . this song breaks me up but yet i keep listening .

My husband wouldn’t go to his concerts because of that but I did. I just loved his singing and he finally did get straightened up but he was a mess.

George Jones HATED this song (or, as he said, “…that maudlin sob.”). King George as he was known (as the King of Country Music) was also known as The Rolls Royce of Country Music for his smooth, velvety voice. Tammy Wynette, whom he married, was known as the Queen of Country Music. Unfortunately, all was not well in the royal family. George had descended into the hell of alcoholism and drug addiction. Tammy Wynette, similarly, was addicted to pain pills because of chronic health conditions. George went six years without a hit and gained the new nicknames of “No Show Jones” (because he often stood audiences up or was so drunk he couldn’t perform) and “Snow Nose Jones” ( because of his cocaine addiction). The legendary producer Billy Sherrill produced both George and Tammy. As soon as he was pitched SSLHT, he was determined that George sing it. George adamantly refused, but Sherrill finally wore him down. The recording sessions were hellacious because of George’s drunkenness, and Sherrill finally had to cut and splice the song together for release. George couldn’t/wouldn’t learn the tune or lyrics, and he slurred his words. Sheerly by coincidence, Tammy came into the studio while George was recording one day. She sat in the sound booth talking to Sherrill, and he later said that the timbre of George’s voice became much more melancholy and sad. Sherrill was able to get the best of that in the finished recording. George got himself straightened out, and SSLHT shot to number one. George reclaimed his status of the King of Country Music, often remarking how his six decade career was saved by this three minute song. (Beer joints and bars had to replace the record in their jukeboxes constantly because they would be worn down from constant play. SSLHT has been called the perfect drinking song.)

They knew he suffered from bad alcoholism too. I think people figured out he had demons.

Do you know who was playing lead guitar for him around this time? There are concerts of his around this time on RU-vid and the lead guitar is shredding it. I know Gary Adams was lead guitar for years but I don't know if he was still with him in 1980?

Love George Jones, I don't know why I didn't know about him in the 80s. In Australia Willie, Dolly and Kenny were well known but when I heard George Jones I thought he was the real deal, Amazing.

Except he and Haggard were two of a kind. :)
