I saw the Stones in Cleveland in the Cleveland Indians Baseball Stadium in 1975. Ronnie Wood had recently became a member of the Stones.The J.Gheils band opened for them.One of their guitarists had a soft rubber fake guitar that he clowned around with.about 90,000, people showed up.The Stadium was adjacent to Lake Erie and there happened to be a Soviet Navy ship anchored and docked within yards of the parking lot for the stadium and alot of concert attendees were throwing rocks at the arm and hammer smoke stacks .The Soviet ship was docked with a high barbed wire chain linked fence around their gangway and their sailors were not allowed ashore.It was one of the concerts I will always remember ! p.s. Fil I watched the Wings of Pegasus song you posted a couple of days ago .EXCELLENT !!!Keep up the good playing and God bless you all !

Just saw the Stones for my second time in Texas! And sweet baby Jesus did they deliver! They sounded better than EVER! I actually named my son after them. Ive been a fan since I was 5 years old. I knew they were my band right away. I'd flip through their book gimmie shelter unauthorized Every time I could get away with it. They are truly a masterpiece in this world. Keith is the king and just watching him play is magic. Seeing him play with the best, Buddy Guy and Gram Parson, Chuck Berry and Mick Taylor is always so special to see. Its like the "best guitarist in history club" or something. Beyond words. Mick isnt bad on guitar either! Thank you so much for this one and Long Live The Stones!! ❤

Excellent Fil! I love The Stones. First heard them on my transistor radio. The Stones were deemed ‘bad boys’, so I had to listen with the radio to my ear. Buying 45s...well, I had to hide them 😝, but once I got headphones 😂, it was game/rock on. Its only rock n roll! They truly did have attitude, and they gave us a voice. What a beautiful buzz. What a great experience 70s music was...glad I was there. Every concert is an amazing event, not just a concert. 2020 was rough not being able to hit up live events. Thankfully, we can reminisce watching/listening on line.

Thanks for the infos...the stories behind the band is very interesting. I'm 70 and when I first heard them I was 15. I still like to hear the inside stories and your analysis. I've always wondered how a young man like you shows interest in those 60s band. We lived through that magical time growing up listening to what is called 'classic rock' bands.

Keith Richards addresses this incident in his book 'Life'. It was a matter of months after John Lennon was assasinated and he thought this guy was going after Mick, it was a gut reaction, instinct, to stop him. The guy was arrested and Keith went down to the jail after the show and bailed him out. I tried to see The Stones live when I was 14 but my parents wouldn't let me go. I kept trying for the next forty years or so but fate didn't want me to see The Stones and every time I was thwarted! I even once had the tickets in my hand but fate stepped in with his Dr Martins and I couldn't make it! Eventually, in 2014 I saw them in Tel Aviv. Even though the tickets weren't cheap I insisted in taking my son. The gig had been squeezed in at the end of the tour and fell on the hottest most humid day of the year so far. They were on stage for close to four hours. It was one of the very best gigs I'd ever seen and my son, who was a veteran of many music festivals said he'd never seen anything to rival it. People always complain about the price of tickets for The Stones but it's so clear that it's important to Mick to give value for money - he works his ass off on stage and in rehearsals. Every move he makes is choreographed and he practices for hours in the dance studio. In my opinion, his voice has improved with age, it's smoother and he hits his notes more accurately. One of the most enjoyable things in the performance was seeing what a great time the band were having - Ronnie and Keith were loving every minute, they were just having fun. The audience included children who looked about eight or ten years old, on their parent's shoulders and an old guy who'd always dreamed of seeing The Stones so his neighbours had got the cash together to buy him a ticket for his hundredth birthday! If you watch some old interviews with the band you'll be surprised how polite they are, even when the interviewer is being unpleasant. The Beatles were often sarcastic in similar situations and yet it was The Stones who got the 'bad boy' reputation.

My brother's best friend from high school named Gary from the 1960's in California (they both graduated in 1969), became a primary roadie for the Stones throughout the 70's. My brother who kept in occasional contact with this guy named Gary, had a picture on his refrigerator door for years of Gary and Keith Richards standing in front of Gary's sofa in his house, while Keith was carrying Gary's young son in his arms. The picture from a regular old 110 camera was from probably around 1976 or 77. It was like a regular old family photo, but with Keith Richards in it. 😀 This gentleman named Gary developed cancer at some point in the late 70's, and the Stones payed for all of Gary's medical expenses. Gary's cancer eventually went into remission and he survived. I believe this person Gary is still alive (he would be 69 now), and my brother every now and then still has contact with him. Major respect for the Stones.

Thanks for this one Fil, as the Stones were one of my first chances to see a popular British band here in the US. It had to be about 1965 or 66. Before Ronny Wood when Brian Jones was still alive. They were still wearing suits, but their edge component was all over the stage anyway. It was in an arena used normally for hockey and the sound was not great, but as we all did in the day, they made the best of it and put on a fine show. My band at the time was actually playing lots of the same blues tunes like 'Little Red Rooster' etc. and so the parallels were undeniable and we got to play with some old blues kings because of that as well.

I've seen the Rolling Stones twice! The Voodoo Lounge Tour and The Bridges To Babalon Tour! Both Awesome! I was very close to the walkway when Mick and Keith and Charlie and Ronnie dashed to the island stage to play Chuck Berry's "Little Queenie"! Just AWESOME! 👍😀 Bill left the Rolling Stones by then. Darryl Jones played Bass and was AWESOME! The Foo Fighters opened on the Bridges Tour! 😀 I also saw the great Dave Davies on a solo tour around then! The man who cut a hole in his amp speaker to get that AWESOME guitar sound on "You Really Got Me"! 😀👍I heard that Keith story about him falling to sleep with the tape recorder going! A couple of points. First, Otis Redding recorded his version of Satisfaction with the horns and Keith Richards (to this day) will tell you that Otis' version is better. Second, there is an interview with Keith here on RU-vid where he talks about this incident. He stated that his only concerns at the time were to protect Mick from this guy and to not knock the guy into Charlie's drums and mess up the song. He said at the end that he paid the guy's bail and "a Telecaster makes a damn good club!". It even stayed in tune after he hit the guy! lol

The death of Meredith Hunter at their Altamont concert in '69 is also a source of Keith's reaction, a Hells Angel stabbed Hunter in the neck when he began to wave a gun in a panicked drug haze. Pool cue wielding Angels were beating fans rushing the stage, hence Hunter's gun but when you pull a gun, you open a door: through his came an angel. Appalling venue, malicious security, fans standing on stage freaking out on acid, and then the violence. That was Gimme Shelter, this video is Lets Spend the Night Together.

By far, the best, most creative period for the Stones were the Mick Taylor years ('69 - '74). Their best live shows occurred during that time period as well. Taylor was a more technically advanced guitarist than Keith or Ronnie. A couple of their best tours were in '73 (European and Pacific Tours). Probably the Stones best bootleg is from the two shows recorded in Brussels in October '73 (Brussels Affair). Incredible!
@JulioLeonFandinho
@JulioLeonFandinho 3 года назад
Mick Taylor years were more Keith Richards years, because it was Keith who did the majority of work in making up riffs and guitar arrangements, Mick Taylor was kind of a mercenary and never had a big role appart from playing his guitar parts... Ronnie Wood made a bigger impact in the Stones music and he was as good as a player as Taylor, who was a very polite blues player but not a virtuoso as many fans think, and certainly he wasn't as brilliant musician as Ronnie, who single handedly all the guitar weight in The Faces, one of the best rock and roll bands ever, and at some point, as good as The Stones back in the day

It's interesting to remember a recent event that could've prompted Keith's angry guitar swing. which happened on December 18th, 1981 in Hampton, Virginia. Almost exactly one year earlier, on December 8, 1980, John Lennon was shot to death in New York City, by a fan. Keith and the Stones CERTAINLY knew this and were probably very aware that crazed fans could be an issue. If I could ask Keith any question, it'd be "When that guy charged you, did John Lennon cross your mind?"

Anyway enough of the "back patting"...something im sure a lot of people would tune into...keep 'em coming👍👍...p.s. still waiting for Walter Trout 😁😁

This is a classic Stones song. Very simple song, but a very catchy melodic riff that just catches in your head and Mic does some great vocals. loved this video with all the balloons, very memorable.

I saw this tour at the New Orleans Superdome. About 40 friends chartered a bus from Birmingham AL. It was quite the party and epic experience for a young HS kid. Still can’t believe my mom let me get away with going.

Haha, always loved this clip from Hampton, Virginia. Nobody ever seems to notice that Mick accidentally swaps the second and third verse of this song here. Maybe he was nervous after the guy ran onstage. 😜

Two names: Bill Wyman and Charlie Watts. Bill is the most under-rated bass player in the world. With his departure, the Stones lost their heart. Love the background, Fil: Bill Wyman’s fantastic magpie book is mandatory reading. A most amazing phenomenon: but why do they leave so many cold, especially after Mick Taylor’s departure? Thanks Fil.

Very good point about Jagger's vocals. So many great rockers don't have technically great voices or a wide range, but they have distinctive voices that they use to great effect in delivering emotional performances. Off the top of my head, I can think of Elvis Costello, Neil Young, Rory Gallagher, Morrissey, Jim Morrison, Bono.

The Stones, The Clash, early AC/DC, early Van Halen, CCR, Humble Pie....Rock and Roll pushed right to the edge of the spectrum before it becomes "Hard Rock". Then it sort of loses something in becoming more powerful, faster and cleaner. The Stones were masters at being tough, melodic, dangerous, soulful and hilarious all at the same time. Pretty much everyone who watches the Stones immediately breaks into a smile and throughout the years they've been a Chuck Berry cover band, a flower power hippie band, blues, gospel, country, glam, disco, punk, reggae and r&b all while being themselves and writing 20-30 of the most monumental songs of the 20th century. THAT'S why they call them the world's greatest rock and roll band.

Have seen the Stones twice - both shows were high energy and the showmanship put on by the band was amazing! Altamont, the concert that started in hope but ( metaphorically and practically) signalled the end of 60's, and death of the countercultural hippie dream. The Stones are a testament to how the body and mind can stand up to the rigors of touring and still have a long and successfull career. As septegenerians, they can still out perform people who could be their great great grandchildren. Great analysis, Fil.

About simplicity. It is said that in his quest for a hit record, Lou Reed, "never lost his belief in the power and beauty of near-moronic simplicity and the monetary rewards it could bring" (David Hepworth) I would think that success through moronic simplicity could drive someone talented and struggling over an edge. Saw "The Stones" in LA in 1971, OK show, my ticket was under 10.00. Thanks Fil.

Just a comment on Keith's reaction to the guy who trespassed on stage. It was only in December of the previous year that John Lennon was shot. Maybe that made Keith feel a little nervous in such an unpredictable situation?

Ah yes, the "bad boys" of rock, never disappoint, with the quintessential "Satisfaction"!... Great analysis, as usual, Fil! I read somewhere, that Richards wrote part of this song while half asleep, with the guitar riffs being styled after Muddy Waters' playing -- an absolute simple but genius, timeless song! I love Otis Redding's version, as well -- it really cuts straight into the primal emotion of the song and Devo completely transformed it and made it their own. Actually Fil, I'd love to see you cover Otis Redding -- his live performances are unbridled in heart, passion & exceptional musicianship! "Loving You" or "Tenderness", would be wonderful to see, or even "Satisfaction", a rendition which, I've heard, influenced Jagger himself! Beautifully done, Fil -- my "Midnight Special" continues... From Harlem, New York -- rock!✌🏼💖🎶🎵
