What a great video.! I just love this track. It’s hauntingly beautiful. Robin Trower is phenomenal. One of the greatest rock blues guitarists. 🎸James Dewar’s voice was exquisite. He hardly moved his mouth, yet he delivered such powerful soulful vocals. He’s got to be one of my favourite bass vocalists..(apart from Jack Bruce).!

Much better singer than Jack Bruce, as a singer Dewar is up there with Paul Rodgers.

RIP James Dewar, his voice & Robin's writing was a perfect match. I saw Robin a few months ago, & he's still got it! His tone & vibrato are heavenly.

Yes, Robin Trower is heavily influenced by Hendrix but, you have to remember, that was the Era he comes from and many young guitar players from that time dug what Jimi did and wanted to be like him. Trower however did establish himself in his own right as an excellent guitarist and composer who built a solid fan base which still holds to this day. I personally love Robin Trowers music and Bridge of Sighs was one of the very 1st rock albums I ever heard.

The entire bridge of sighs album is a showcase of how to play stratacaster blues guitar with gain! Yes certainly ties in with Hendrix but he has his own way of doing things that sounds unique and individual from everyone else out there!

That slow riff has more power than riffs ten times faster. It’s slow pace and that biting tone really draw you in. Then top it off with that full, raw vocal by Dewar, nothing like it. Trower has always been a favorite of mine.

Been listening to Robin Trower since he broke off from Procol Harum. Just awesome, beautiful, ethereal music. And I must agree, we lost Jimmy Dewar way too soon. He was terribly under rated as a singer. I rate him up with Paul Rodgers.

Went to see Foreigner in 1984 on their Agent Provocateur tour. Robin Trower opened. Before the show, I had picked up a Foreigner t-shirt. After Trower opened, I went back out and convinced the merch guys to swap it out for a Trower shirt. He blew them way the hell off of the stage.

Thanks for including James Dewar in the discussion. Just as Trower is criminally underrated, so too is Dewer. IMO, his departure from the band due to the medical condition that eventually cost him his life took much of the edge from Trower's music. He was as perfect a fit for Trower as Trower was for him.

I have watched Robin perform live on seven occasions over the last 35 years. He has the strongest natural vibrato I have ever seen. That being said, he went through phases where he used effects, whammy-bars, and wah-wah pedals, etc. but even without all that stuff he is still one of my guitar heroes, the other two being Michael Schenker and Brian May.

I was fortunate enough to see Robin Trower live in the 80s in San Francisco at a small club called the Box. When he came on the stage my first impression was that he’s much smaller in real life. He started playing and my second impression was that he was using the same amplifier set up that you would use if you played in a ballpark! He was awesome and he kept playing and playing and playing. It was such a treat to see him in an intimate setting. My brother and I were blown away along with our hearing. If you can find it, the album of Robin playing for the king biscuit flower hour is a real treat. It gives you kind of an idea of what the songs sound like played live and at length. Thanks for the great Review.

So glad that you noticed his soulful feel. He has said that his main influence was James Brown. He does have some Hendrix influence as well but it's Robin's unique tone & funky feel that made him a 70's mainstream rocker. I just saw him this past April in San Antonio Texas after a 40 plus year hiatus since seeing him live. He started the set with Too Rolling Stoned & it just went up from there! I caught him just after his sound check (playing Day of the Eagle no less!)& he graciously signed my Blackmore signature Strat! He never went away as true artists persist to pursue their lifelong muse & his new album Getting Closer To the Day is excellent & his voice suits the material well.(God rest your soul Jimmy Dewar) So Robin is still a 70's rocker only now it's his age but his music is ageless as he gets closer to his day.

Robin Trower has often unfairly and inappropriately been compared to Jimi Hendrix, who was a hero of Robin's. (Robin would ultimately go on to tour with Jimi when Robin was with Procol Harum and they had great respect for one another.) The fact is that Robin developed his own unique style and tone. And I love each musician's music. They do have a point of musical commonality, though, that goes beyond their love of Strats and Marshall amps and their mastery of those instruments. While each demonstrates impressive technical skills and guitar virtuosity, some of their best-known works are technically within the reach of even intermediate level guitar players. That is, on those works, a great many guitarists are capable of playing the pieces note-for-note and at the same speed. But -- and this is an all-important "but" -- it's another thing altogether to play those pieces with the art and soul that makes those compositions musically magical. Robin's Bridge of Sighs is a perfect example of the playing of such a composition.

Used to listen to this album with all the lights out. Sometimes with or without smoking the impotent grass we had back then. His music and the way the instruments blended along with the vocals was so hypnotic. Your right about the drummer. He shows real discipline and seasoning as a musician. I've played with so many drummers that didn't. Should be felt more than heard. I don't know why he and his band aren't in the H.O.F. (like many others).

It's actually a device called UniVibe. You have to have one of those for that Star Spangled Banner /Machine Gun sound. Jimi and Robin liked a slow slushy wobble with no vibrato. Use a faster setting with vibrato if you want to sound like Joshua Homme of Kyuss.

The first time I saw Robin was on the "Bridge of Sighs" tour, he looked just like he does in this video. The last two times I've seen him have been much more recent, he looks his age (see the "Seven Moons" video with Jack Bruce), but he certainly hasn't slowed down any as a player! He was playing large arenas on the "For Earth Below" tour, last two shows I saw were small halls, amazing to see him from close up, and last show I went to he hung around after so I ran to my car and got the "Seven Moons" CD and got his autograph on it. Had I known he'd do that I'd have brought the "Twice Removed From Yesterday" LP! Great player and seems quite a nice fellow as well.

Spot on Fil... I had the great fortune to once again see Robin Trower May 15th 2019 at the McDondald Theatre, Eugene OR. Robin's "Power Trio" had Richard Watts on bass/vocals & Chris Taggert on drums. Robin hasn't lost anything! You still know instantly "who is playing guitar"! Robin gives the guitar a "living, breathing life" that that is self-evident through every note...no simply shredding noise maker!...When Robin plays you can feel it in your soul!(like my other favs: Ritchie Blackmore, Alvin Lee, Peter Green, Leslie West & Frank Marino.). Robin/Watts/Taggert did an excellent job in covering all the old stand-by's and including songs from his latest album. Trower/Dewar/Isidore can hold their own against any other Blues/Rock Trio(and yes, I even include Cream...who I also love). Robin is one of the most underated, period!! and Jimmy Dewar's voice was as smooth as a swallow of Dalwhinnie Single Malt. Jimmy, totally underated as well(one of the Greatest Voices...matching Robin's deep, soul stiring sound). Isidore tied it all together!...also underated!

Fil, I love your perspective on musicians and their playing. I have to share with you why music was the way it was back in the 70's being so mystic and sultry. It was made for people who were "Heads" like myself. There was a time when music was created to sit and get totally immersed in with friends sitting around the turntable. Imagine hearing this back then when it was a brand a new album, and you and your buddies went to Sam Goody's to purchase this and maybe the new Pink Floyd and Zeppelin albums. Went back to your friends home and enjoyed some mind enhancing smoke and then for the first time, carefully placing the needle on the record, sat back all day listening together to every fantastic song by these Head Masters. Today I hear people critique and surgically try to understand where this all came from and it can't be explained away. You have to sit and let it soak into you and wrap itself around your soul as a listener and musician then after wearing that album out and having listened to it hundreds of times can you then feel somehow connected to it the rest of your natural born life. I appreciate Wings of Pegasus, but there's more to this music than you could ever imagine, and will never fully get. That train left the station long ago, lol.

Loved Robin TROWER, then he seemed to disappear from radio in the mid 70s. THANKS

Bridge of sighs always had a sort of hypnotic effect on me and I think that is happening to you.I see it in your eyes..I first heard Robin play this song in 1974 at the PAC in Milwaukee Wisconsin..I became a fan then.. Another great Trower song is Daydream.Check that one out..So cool someone so young like you is a fan of ROBIN TROWER.

My brother who passed a few years back turned me onto Robin Trower when I was a kid. It is amazing that a small island produced some of the world's greatest guitarist/musicians. Btw Fil how about a shout out to one of my personal favorites Martin Barre via Jethro Tull, an absolute amazing guitarist whose son lives here in Mississippi.

I first heard Trower in Richmond Hill Ontario, just outside of Toronto. I had just turned 18.I remember hearing a song called Twice removed from yesterday and I thought- My God who is this guy? Absolutely brilliant guitarist and perhaps just not included in most lists of best guitarists around. Top ten on my list. Thanks for your reviews on these guitar giants. I was very impressed with your thoughts on Frank Marino, sometimes referred to as the white Jimi Hendrix. Bless you man and keep up the great work.

I had this album when I was younger. At the end of the day I'd turn the lights down, put this record on, put on the earphones and sit and just get lost in it.

OMG just saw a recent RU-vid Trower performance at an outdoor fest-SO SOLID in spite of his age, and the bass player vocalist (like a third of his age) is really good too.

He plays so awesomely, almost can be described as beautiful, yet gritty and mean at the same time. The vocalist is top notch too. Lots of feel from both. I love this song.

One of my all-time faves, and has great Hendrix influences without trying to be him.

When 'Bridge of Sighs' came out was the only time I ever heard a music critic call a hard rock album 'Beautiful'. Robin Trower is one of my favorite guitarists and I never get tired of listening to him. I love how he gets such a heavy emotional sound. There's some Hendrix influence but their sound isn't overly similar. RT just pours his soul out when he plays, like Hendrix did and I feel it is the defining point of their shared styles. He once said he was influenced by Hendrix but so was Carlos Santana and you can't say you hear. I mean, I get it, there's a feel to both but I recognize Trower as soon as I hear him, same goes for Hendrix. When musicians play with real passion you can hear it,.

Yeah I think it's unfair to label him as a copy, lots of players have influences. Trower doesn't sound like Hendrix to me, he's got his own thing going on.

The definition of "stoner music" Bridge Of Sighs with Bassist/vocalist the late James Drewer. Zakk Wylde has been known to play the main riff during his solo spot. As for Hendrix inspired guitarists there was Trower and a guy from Canada Frank Morino.

I saw Robin at my college in @ 1975, he was awesome. No-one at the time really knew who he was (ex Procul Harem and the rest.) Dewar was such a good singer, RT hired a new bass player so James Dewar could concentrate on the singing. Check out The fool and me. Bridge of sighs
