This dude was unbelievable. This and his cover of Little Wing are two of the best Hendrix covers I've ever seen, it's difficult to say how good this is!

Pretty cool story. A buddy of mine was good friend's with Jimi's dad, Al Hendrix and he would go up to Seattle and stay with him from time to time. On one visit, Al was telling my friend Phil about a knock on the door he had gotten one day and when he answered, there was a limo parked out front and SRV standing there with his entourage on the doorstep. Stevie began to lament on how much he loved Jimi and always wanted to meet Al, so he could let him know AND invite him to the show he was playing that night at the Paramount. Al invited him in and after so many minutes, asks to be excused. He goes to the hall closet, grabs a guitar case, brings it out and opens it, a twelve string acoustic that belonged to Jimi and Al informed Stevie that NOBODY has touched that guitar since Jimi had passed. Stevie tuned it up and proceeded to "Go To Town" for over an hour! So, there you have it, SRV, in Al's living room, playing Jimi's 12 string!? Talk about a moment...lol! If ANYONE would like the picture from that day, just hit me up on Messenger and I'll be glad to send it. My name on Messenger is Erik Slavens

@Hollylivengood
@Hollylivengood 3 года назад
He definately was an open channel. Not easy to do. I do a lot of painting copies. It's a way for someone to get a real painting of a piece they like, for about a fourth of the price. But there's something about the love, real absolute loving relationship you feel for an artist when you copy them, and recreate their style that you can see in Stevie Ray when he's covering these. He could play it BETTER if he wanted to. But he wants to recreate them, and that's pure.

@memnok magee I really got to disagree there. and look at it this way Stevie died real young think about every year that goes by in the heights you could reach. Stevie played with more soul and feeling than anyone I have ever heard play in my life . People talk about this is vector player in their technical abilities if they don't have the soul or the heart that it takes to make people feel the music. I guess it's really hard to explain. When I was growing up we had a piano. My mother could play anything any of the classical pieces she could sit down it a piano and playing out Mozart Bach whatever but I asked you to play anything blues or boogie and she was lost she didn't have it. I would sit down there as a little kid start playing boogie-woogie pieces and she was just amazed because I didn't even know how to read music or anyting I just listened to it copied it and then after a while I got it and it was inside me and it came out and I didn't know what was supposed to come next I made it go there. I have never heard guitar player that was better than Stevie or as good as SRV except perhaps Hendricks. Go crunch in Texas flood by Stevie Ray Vaughan and watches video on RU-vid and then tell me anyone matches his soul

I was blessed to have been a friend of Stevie Ray right up to his tragic departure from this world. Met him in Florida 1984 & we hit it off well & would play goofy songs & have fun before & after his shows. He told me once that Jimi would come show him how to play certain passages. I replied "gimmee some of what yer smoking cuz I want Jimi to come visit me too". He then said that he meant that he asked Jimi's spirit to help connect to his feel & where to play the piece on the fretboard. Stevie said the spirits of those beyond this world love to give their help when they are asked for it in sincerity. He is sorely missed by all that personally knew the beautiful soul that he was. Especially his brother Jimmie. We get together now & then when he isn't on the road. I knew who Jimmie was in The Fabulous Thunderbirds before hearing about Stevie. Jimmie has a tone all his own & one of the purest vintage blues players alive. Perhaps you can check out T Birds Full Time Lover sometime.

Hi from Texas , Y'all really don't realize just how good SRV really was . I had the pleasure of getting to know Stevie through some friends , and as a bassist I can appreciate the man , very easy to drive , a guy that feeds on the rythem , that's what he had that made him so good . Voodoo child is a blues based song , and he was a blues master . The technique of lead line then back to the rythem line is a classical blues style called (call and answer) where you call with the lead lick then answer it with the rythem . You can also answer a vocal lick the same way.( Mr. B.B.King) but that's another story . I'LL give you young folks a tip , if you want to be a great guitarist , you got to learn the blues . It will teach you how to feel the emotion that's there inside the music , ready for you to bring out . Rock on ! And R.I.P. STV.

If you think someone could out Hendrix Hendrix then you are probably very young and also cannot think logically. SRV could play the way he did only because Jimi Hendrix lived. Jimi created the sound, the style, the utilization of overtones, feedback, hum and even the the half step down tuning in rock music I doubt anyone had really considered prior. To have lived when Jimi was first heard on radio was monumental moment. There had never been anything like it and what you heard before that moment went into antiquity if you were a lover of rock guitar. SRV copied Jimi well in a few aspects but not close enough, the differences are there and easy to hear. Nobody will ever top Jimi in the genre of rock and Jimi live on stage the sound was even more striking. Many great players out there and I admire those who copy Jimi until they do it too much then they begin to sound almost foolish.Only listen to his music that was released while he was alive and never believe anything that the woman called janie says. She is a criminal in my view and others agree she is cheapening Jimi's image, I speak out as often as I can about it...

Honestly I think SRV's Voodoo Child is notably inferior to Hendrix's. His chops were insane but he turned it into another twangy Texas blues song. Hendrix's was a psychedelic firebomb that could have set fire to Cambodia beyond Richard Nixon's wildest dreams. Even if Stevie's chops were a little tighter, his stylistic range was far narrower. He had his signature sound, and WHAT a sound, but that was it. Hendrix was ever the explorer finding new ways to expand his palette and Eddie Kramer said he was a brilliant sound engineer too. Yes I would argue SRV's chops were slicker, but Hendrix definitely surpassed him in creativity and musicianship and even Stevie would tell you that.

Fun fact about SRV that very few people also now is that his strings were a .013 Clapton strings which are real thick strings to make a fatter tone. In the 60’s and 70’s Jimmy page used .008 and Hendrix used custom .009 and .010. So when SRV came in with his tone it was something unheard of for a jazz/blues player. He could NEVER go where Jimi was coming from and so many people missed that, he was a fantastic showman that copied Jimis style and so many other things but truely great people never remind us of anyone else and thats who he has been compared to over and over, but he didnt invent any of it & he was no pioneer and his song writing was good but was NOT other worldy, but very predictable country blues lyrics at best ...

@@chircoj1 he didnt improve on jimi he couldnt write like Hendrix if his life depended on it or play like Jimi, his little wing cover ruined that song couldnt play and sing it because it is not easy to play and sing that one, but instead chose to do instrumental which i find lack luster period, great guitarist yes but there are many great guitarist and how long has Jimi been voted to the top over the years by so many of the other greats out there over and over again there is a reason for that and its because he is the master period ...
