This version of Dazed and Confused probably contains a couple dozen riffs or pieces, and he just goes on and on. His creative genius is off the charts. He's always been my favorite, not simply for his playing, but his writing, producing, and general over all artistic / creative skills. There really is no other like him. To me he's the 8th wonder of the world.

Right on. I think it was maybe Danny Goldberg who said Jimmy is/was a Quadruple threat: As a Guitarist, as a Composer, as a Producer, and as a Stage Presence/Performer. Rock and Roll indeed!

One of the things that makes Page different is that he’s totally fearless. He goes places that aren’t ‘musically correct’, sometimes paints himself into a corner and gets into trouble but finds his way out. And in the process, he took you places that other guitarists wouldn’t have dared go to. Fearless!

Your right and Fil said what I always knew , that the reason people and most never played a guitar before .say sloppy is they don’t understand what he’s doing . Most guitarist play the same way night after night it gets boring, Jimmy’s mistakes are better than being bored . Not to mention his creativity in the studio . There are better guitarist with speed and technique. But for feel and and diversify in styles Jimmy’s #1 in my book .

As sloppy as Page may have been at times, it simply worked perfectly. Live Zeppelin was all about the feeling and vibe. Page was and still is one of the absolute greatest writers for the guitar from an orchestral approach. Page was the connection between Les Paul and many other players when it came to having what seemed like a thousand guitars playing at once. Yeah, I wish I played guitar as sloppy as Jimmy Page! A musical genius of our time, period.

I've got a lot of boots of Zeppelin and what has always impressed me is Pagey playing it different each night. Yes, he often sounds sloppy, but I (happily) attribute this to stretching himself to try new things and keep it fresh. I would much prefer this to somebody that plays the same thing perfectly night after night, but never stretches to reach for something new.

I have to agree that Zeppelin was an incredible improv band. Thats what makes great live music special. They could go off the rails, but Jimmy could usually cue Bonzo to reel it back in. When they were spot on it was magic. They took a lot of risks but it usually paid off. They were that good at it. Sloppy? Sometimes, but the slop usually led to something amazing. You build ideas that way. Zeppelin on a bad day in 1980 is better than most anything out there today. 73 & 75 were incredible.

Personally as a Zep Head... I'd give it a 3/10 from his whole career. Does that make him seem good? Kinda, but his worst was 1980 to 1984. His top playing was definitively 1971 where it was the best of Pre-1972 showman style and early proto-metal; the the best show in 1973 for fans was mainly Offenburg, Germany. Although some people think the recording's quality is subpar.

Everybody has an opinion but any one who says sloppy is just not a person who knows music or just is not into zep which is fine but Page has said himself that he is not a technical player he goes for a sound a feel he is always pushing the boundaries and when you do that you crash once in a while like evil Kenevil but when he’s on he is amazing I love the emotion in his playing soft hard choppy smooth bottom line it moves me period!!!!!!!!
@thebreathalyzer
@thebreathalyzer 3 года назад
I think you could say his playing wasn't always precise... but he's more like a jazz player where it's more about the overall vibe and arc to the solo/improvisation than the specific individual notes. He's telling a story and it goes to a whole number of different places and the band all goes exploring that together. There's not a lot of bands playing in that style who could really do those long ranging jams like that...the Allman Brothers, the Grateful Dead, some of those bands did it that way too.

The idea that a lot of guitarists consider Jimmy Page "sloppy" does his playing a great disservice. The sonic palette from which Jimmy derived his ideas was so, so varied and wide but also very personal. He played what he felt and expressed such a huuuge amount of ideas and sounds throughout the years as to be mind boggling, Although I've heard some dreadful work from Jimmy when he was obviously wasted, when he is on, there is nobody who sounds like him in tone, ideas or expression. In general, to say that he "missed" something is to suggest that one would know what Jimmy was going for in the first place. But if he's only judged for not being as technically accomplished as John McLaughlin or the like, then it's a waste of time.

I love Jimmy's playing. He's never out of ideas and always teetering on the edge of his technical abilities - which are pretty big, given the era he played in. His playing, though sometimes filled with mistakes, is always moving and stirs the emotions. TSRTS STH solo is like someone speaking of an old love. Some of Jimmy's quotes that I think sum up his playing: "I don't deal in technique. I deal in emotions." "I'm not a guitarist as far as a technician goes, I just pick it up and play it. Technique doesn't come into it."

I'm so glad you played this particular clip, because when people wanna bag on Page & say he's sloppy, I always want to play them this specific live solo- it's incredibly clean AND fast- not to mention,improvised! but Page,like other true greats was much more than just a great guitar player- he was a visionary, a producer, a songwriter, arranger, recording artist, performer- each member of that band was incredible- & the chemistry they had is unmatched to this day! I heard Over The Hills And FarAway on the AM radio back around '74, it really caught my ear & my fancy- I knew I wanted to do that- now 50 years later, I can say I fulfilled the desire to learn how to play guitar on a professional level ,make music & perform & record- but there is still an intangible element to it all, & that's where the magic occurs-

Jimmy page was a beast of a player at the top of his game. But later in life due to a secret drug addiction after the band broke up he stopped playing I believe for a while and that’s apparent when he’s in a concert with Eric Clapton you can see Eric has brought him along as his friend and to inspire jimmy back into playing. As jimmy was very rusty in that concert. But in his prime of playing he was a monster

It's hard to try and emulate page he has infinite sounds that'll make you wonder how he even does that. his sloppiness makes him unique and a little slop doesn't hurt anybody it just adds to the guitar lore. All the greats had a pinch of slop ( Duane allman, hendrix, roy buchanan, clapton etc) slop is part of the guitar lore just the right amount though.

Phillip Ward can't judge from 1 song, did you listen to the whole show track ? What generation of recording? Was it from a taper or soundboard mix? I toured, worked, GD family from '70-'98. depending on the recording, lots can be lost. Personally, Duane,Jerry,Bobby were just amazing on ALOT of tracks,shows.

Hey, I know I'm a couple years late here, but this reminded me of some of these great 2021 pandemic performances that have been popping up on RU-vid occasionally with preformers all playing together but from different locations and countries and such. The performance I'm thinking of is a truly phenomenal cover of _Zeppelin's Good Times Bad Times_ by RU-vid artists Paulie Z (singer), Mr Jimmy (guitar), Tony Franklin (bass) and an 11 year old drummer, believe it or not, named Yoyoka who is a force of nature. The performances are so good and beyond entertaining that I think you would enjoy watching it even if you don't want to do an analysis of it. Phew! Sorry! Bit of a long comment.

For $6.00 U.S you would get 5/hrs of Zeppelin Live in '73 .Extended jams were the norm back then, improvised solos, songs merged into 3,4,5 other songs & back again. Great era of musicianship across all genres. Being flawless and playing to a grid wasn't a thing yet. Thank God for that. Free-style Rock'n'Roll. \m/ Fil.

Man, what can you say about this concert? This is why I picked up guitar 25 years ago. I think the intro solo and mid solo on Since I've Been Loving You is the best solo Jimmy plays. It's complete emotion. And Roberts vocals...! If you could review that sometime, appreciate it! But really every band member at this time was incomparable and on top. Even John Paul's bass playing is inspiring. Great review here!

What I love about Page’s playing is that it always has interesting shapes, breaking from one idea to the next. In this little clip, he’s got maybe six, seven or more ideas that include separate rhythm changes. I mean who does that when soloing? This is what sets him apart from all the other players. He is like an idea manufacturing plant. Amazing

If you listen to a bunch of different recordings of their jams across the years you'll find a lot of the same themes throughout, with some being dropped or added - or the order changed - as time went on. The structure overall would would be there, but the length of each theme (and what each muscian exactly played) could change from night to night.

I agree with you Fil, about having the melody and feel , with all that being expressed through the fret board. For me personally, as a guitar teacher you know, having the technical skills is very important and necessary..... it's what you do with your playing as an individual, that shines through. Almost like expressing your inner soul through a guitar , giving us all the most fantastic of MUSIC!!!! Just my opinion though. From the first A chord of RockN Roll to the straight on attack of since I've been loving you to the best 12 string playing on the song remains the same anyone will ever see to the note for note perfection at the end of Stairway all improvised is sheer genious by Page and all of the band clearly proving they were the best band in the world! The “Brown Sound” in all its glory here. Dazed live was a evolving work in progress. If you look at their tour schedule from the ‘73 tour and go back and listen to boot recordings you’ll hear where all this jamming came from and led up to. They ran this workout six out of seven nights for like eighteen months straight. Total ensemble type jam. It was like a flock of birds in that everyone would follow a particular idea and run with it….until the next one. Many of the musical passages heard in Dazed ‘73 can be traced back to live performances back to ‘69.

🖐🏼 Stop right there Yet the song remains the same cement hymn as the greatest guitar Player EVER!!!! Yes there is Jimmy Hendrix But he just does not have the library.. Jimmy is making that guitar scream orgasm. That's what it takes to play the guitar.. Not memorizing scales Up-and-down the neck like a robot.. You've got to have soul And Jimmy is the soul keeper.. Nice section you picked out of the movie.. The whole movie is a jam session... That's why they played 3 hours 4 hours a night, Probably why Robert Plant lost his voice so many times.. Even the Beastie Boys recognize. If I could play guitar I'd be Jimmy Page
