I played hockey for 10 years as I was growing up. I played Left Wing but I always wanted to try playing as a Goalie because I loved playing in net when I played street hockey, unfortunately I broke my collarbone 3 hours before I was supposed to get my first chance in net and never tried to give it another shot after that. My favorite team is the Ottawa Senators. My cousin plays for them currently, and his Uncle played for them in the 90s. Before that my favorite team was the Philadelphia Flyers because my favorite player was Eric Lindros, the reason I wore the number 88 whenever I could.

Chicago Blackhawks are one of the original six teams of the NHL, I am biased as I'm sure you noticed from my comments, but they won three Stanley Cups in a six-year span: 2010, 2013, 2015. They have been rebuilding after all the players from those teams retired. They drafted Connor Bedard, who is considered to be a generational player, and are building around him. Check out any film about Connor. I couldn't play hockey; it was too expensive and football was pretty much free, but I respect the "H E double hockey sticks" out of any person who plays the sport. Also, check out "Shoresy", great hockey show made in Canada.

Proud Canadian 🇨🇦 hockey fan; been watching as long as I can remember. Hockey Night in Canada was and still is a thing! Unless we had company Saturday night hockey was/is on. With 3 brothers who all played locally, if they didn’t have ice time we played in the driveway or on a friend’s side-street where someone would holler “car!” whenever we had to move the nets for traffic. In the early 70’s we lived in Rick MacLeish’s hometown, he was one of the leading scorer’s in the league (50 goals in his 3rd season in the league) and the Philadelphia Flyer’s won back-to-back Stanley Cups. A school-friend lived on his family’s street and when visiting he would play street hockey with the locals. I’m a life-long Toronto Maple Leafs fan and Borje Salming was my favourite player growing up. They haven’t won the Stanley Cup since 1967 but are the second winningest team in NHL history, behind the Montreal Canadiens (my husband’s team) - we are a house divided when it comes to hockey. 😂 Both are part of the original 6 teams, along with Detroit Red Wings, Chicago Blackhawks, New York Rangers and the Boston Bruins. Please continue down this rabbit hole; it’s “the coolest sport on earth!” Beyond the biggest hits and fights to get an appreciation of the skill I’d suggest videos on the best goals, best saves, best dangles (amazing stick-work/puck control), best penalty shots or shoot-out goals and any videos highlighting some of these generational players: Wayne Gretzky - the GOAT Sidney Crosby Alex Ovechkin - also the rivalry between him and Sidney Crosby and their significance to the game Connor McDavid - best skilled current player/goal scorer, playmaker, fastest in the league (although having a rough start this season) Connor Bedard - the league’s newest phenom (being compared to McDavid and Gretzky) Nathan MacKinnon Cale Makar and Pavel Datsyuk

Hockey is a great sport, I never played but I got into cause of the legendary video game NHL 94 (a time when EA sports made great sports games and yes im old) my favorite team is the Chicago Blackhawks the first team I picked when I got the game and been with them since. But the wild thing was my favorite player Sergei Fedorov played for their rival the Detroit Red Wings (in those days the Hawks and Wings were in the same division in the western conference but Detroit has now been moved to the eastern conference) I did watch last nights games as well so im glad we won (idk if its our team is better or Pittsburgh jus blew the lead)

I think one of the more complicated rules for new fans to grasp is offside. In football (soccer) offside is called based on the relative position of the attacking and defending players at the moment the ball is moved forward. In hockey, the defending players are irrelevant to the offside condition and instead, the blue line at the entrance to the offensive zone serves that function. In general, the puck must precede attacking players into the offensive zone (which is defined by the blue line) and the point of decision is when the puck actually crosses from the neutral zone into the offensive zone unlike football which determines offside at the moment the ball is passed forward. Should the puck come out of the offensive zone, attacking players must also exit the offensive zone and the same offside rule applies. There is a variant called a delayed offside. In this case, the attacking team was offside when the puck entered the offensive zone but they did not take possession of the puck (i.e. the defending team has possession of the puck). When this condition exists, the attacking team is allowed to exit the offensive zone and re-enter resetting the offside condition and play continues. Should the attacking team pressure the defensive team while a delayed offside is active, the linesman will whistle the play to stop at their discretion.
@ExploringTheSmoke

Obelisk!!! You absolute LEGEND, thank you for the information and explaining it in a way that isn't condescending but very very clear, I appreciate you, and I'm glad you enjoyed and commented 💪🏻
@obelisk21
@obelisk21 11 месяцев назад
@@ExploringTheSmoke Once you start watching hockey, particularly live, one thing you will notice is the referees and linesmen have a unique relationship with the players compared to any other sport that I have seen. Communication is constant both during play and when play is whistled dead. For the offside rule, for instance, watch the linesman standing at the blue line for the attacking zone. His arm will be raised in the air if delayed offside is active but he will also be yelling "OFFSIDE" repeatedly to let the attacking team know that they need to exit the zone to reset the offside condition. I would recommend watching this video. It is a compilation of NHL referees mic'd up and interacting with players. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-X7ofwnVtttY.html

The trapezoid behind the net is because of a former goalie, Martin Brodeur, who was very adept at clearing the puck out before the offense could get there.

I'm a Leafs fan! Doug Gilmour was my favorite player, before he was a Leaf. One of the lowest drafted players of his generation to be in the HOF as well as being top 30 in history for points. Best forward line name in history is the French connection from the Buffalo Sabres. IMO! A normal shift should on the ice for a forward or even a defenseman is roughly one minute. Players do stay on the ice longer, usually due to pick possession by their own team, or more regularly when playing defense on a power play down a man serving a penalty. Anything over 2 minutes is a long stretch, and is visible to even the newest fan
