There's a story about about 2 f22 and 4 f16 playing a hide and seek training mission in Alaska. The 16 were tasked to find and engage the 22s. While hunting the 22s, having trouble finding them the 22s came up from behind and below, followed them around then asked them on the radio what they were looking for, startling the f16s.

I have a friend who recently retired as an F-15 pilot. He flew against the F-22 when it was first coming on line. He told me that going in to the first exercise, many of them (who flew the most dominant fighter in the world to that point) thought the new jet was over hyped, and probably not as good as claimed and expected to at least hold their own against it. 12 Eagles went up against 5 Raptors - none of them even got off a shot before being downed. He had NEVER seen anything like that.

He needs to look up the story of this jet intercepting Iranian jets trying to shoot down a drone. The pilot flew under the Iranian aircraft and checked out their loadout before getting on the radio and telling them to go home.

Yup heard that story as well! Iranian jet was their ‘best’ F-4 Phantom since their F-14’s are grounded and the audio that was captured of the exchange between the F-4 and ATC was kind of scary since the F-4 lined up for the kill shot of the US drone when they F-22’s made their presence known visually - F-4 disengaged and changed course for base …

At an air show a few years back I had a chance to see an F-22 Raptor: All I can say is Oh. My. God. I have never seen a plane fly like that before - it's actually almost surreal. It can maneuver in such peculiar ways that you cannot imagine how it still stays up in the air. I remember seeing it and just being in complete awe, and saying to my partner, "if I were the enemy and that plane came up on my radar, I would slow down to just above a stall, and rock my wings back and forth - in other words, surrender immediately". Of course that's if the Raptor pilot let me live that long!
@carladams5891
@carladams5891 2 года назад
This video didn't mention it but the plane is that maneuverable due to its thrust vectoring. The nozzles at the back of the engines turn to direct the thrust helping the plane turn quicker.

You're assuming you'd even see it on radar to know it's there! From training stories and actual intercepts, it's clear that you only actually ever see this plane (either visually or on radar) if they want to be seen. 😁

There's a short video out there you should check out on your own when you got some time. It was back when F-15 was considered the best in the world and F-22 just hit the scene. There was a lot of Skeptics that the F22 was as capable as claimed, and a lot of people were convinced that the F-15 was still Superior. So they set up a test and did a mock battle 1 F-22 versus 5 F-15 at the same time, and the F-22 made short work of all five of them without a single one of them never even seeing where the F-22 was killing them from. They couldn't get a weapons lock because they couldn't find it on the radar and they couldn't find it with their eyes. That was enough to shut the Skeptics up.

Make no mistake, the F-22 can track enemy fighters 200 mile away with missiles that kill 30 miles away. I've heard the AIM 120D can actually cover 57nm if the radar lock is good. The F-22 can simultaneously track 3 enemy jets, fire 120D at them 50 miles away, and be heading back to home base before the other jets explode.

Listened to a podcast about the F-22. The pilot being interviewed said that the biggest hurdle to getting helmet integrated sights/que was two things budget and room in the cockpit. The larger helmet required for the advanced optics/sighting system is still bulky and hits the canopy. Just won’t fit, in it’s present state of technology.

I'm not a pilot, but I was always impressed with the "vectored thrust", and what I assume it does for maneuverability.
@mycroft16
@mycroft16 2 года назад
There's a shot in the video of the jet going vertical, nearly stalling put flipping over way more rapidly than you expect. That's the vectored thrust. This thing is ungodly levels of maneuverable. It's also capable of supersonic flight without afterburners which is terrifying. It's radar cross section from a ground station is like a hummingbird or less. This plane is straight up next level. We don't even offer it to our allies.

@travissmith2056
@travissmith2056 2 года назад
R/D for this aircraft was started back in the 90' Fun Fact: The F-22 has a top speed of Mach 2.2 & cruises at Mach 1.6 with it's "super cruse" ability. That's when the aircraft can "cruse" at supersonic speeds without afterburners. Cost per: &412M Weight: 43,430 lbs This breakdown barely scratches the surface of the F-22s abilities. It's flyby wire system controls everything through a side mount "joystick". When developing this, the stick didn't actually move. It detected the pressure the pilot exerted on it. It was found, a stick like that is so unlike other aircraft, pilot training & hard to become accustom to it became detrimental & they modified it to move a little. FBW system relies on electricity, no power, no controls. Electrical power is so important, it runs power of engines & 3 backup APUs. The computers control everything & are programed to know what it's doing relative to control inputs & stage of flight. It won't break itself if the pilot is trying to do something the plane can't but it will do it's best to execute the commands the pilot is requesting. The 2 vertical stabilizers are independent, same as elevators. They aren't locked together. Air brakes would give a radar return if used, so the computers aim both in on each other, essentially making a huge amount of drag to slow, if needed. It does have the helmet clear view helmets. Where the pilot, when system on, can see surroundings as if they weren't in an airplane. The main wings can change shape, by front slats & rear flaps, as per flight needs also. If you ever see one flying straight & the flight surfaces are moving, that's not the pilot, that's the computer compensating for external forces. Like think if you had a car that knew the road ahead & adjusted for a pot hole. You hit a huge hole doing 75 mph, you never knew you did. 100% glass cockpit. The pilot never needs to take hands of the stick (right) & throttle/ electronics (left) to do anything. Not like one would ever need to use it but the ejection seats are calibrated to the person. Now with all this added info, it could be a scratch, only surface level though. Easy to buff out. Pilots who use it say, It's the closest to video game without being real.

The crazy things that are still crazy about it me are...... The F-35 JSF can't come close, even though it's so much newer. Given it's not meant for that role. The second, we still dont know what all it can do. The pilots are ordered to never show it's full capabilities ate anytime other than a time of war. This way no clear defense can be created against it. This rule is observered with our alies as well as our own forces. Those missle upgrades do two things. The AIM-9x lets the pilot be even more off axis with an enemy while shooting. Imagine a funnel with the little end being at the front of the missle. The big end is where the missle can see a target. Anything outside that funnel, it cant see and wont hit. Now, imagine the big end of the funnel just got bigger with a larger angle. The missle now has a larger field of vision and can see more. The AAMRAMs are more for long range and can work as a fire and forget missle. They are the scarey ones though. Once it breaks comms with the planes radar and goes pitbull (starts using its own radar) it will look for something to hit and they cant stop it. So they have to be really sure of what they are doing. My favorite still holds the best record though. The F-15 is undefeeted in combat. It's got something like a 125 to 0 kill ratio. The F-15 and F-22 are the only aircreaft I know of that can accelerate while going straight up. The F-15 did shoot down a satelite after all. Oh, and the F-22's replacement has already flown aparently.

The simulated combat the narrator is talking about is actual aircraft in the skies, but not actually armed, except with a laser targeting system. It's basically a game of advanced 3D air tag, without a real explosion. The simulated international military event is called "Red Flag" and it takes place in military airspace over the southern Nevada desert. The F-22 Raptor has superior aerodynamics and flight control systems, even when compared to the F-35 Strike Eagle, Lockheed's other modern stealth fighter. The F22 may not have the see-through-aircraft helmet visor targeting technology that is in the F35, but the F22 can outmaneuver it and other fighters all day, and is not to be underestimated in both, defensive, and offensive roles.
@yugioht42

It’s that the military is switching to combat drones now because it’s a cheaper solution and can fight just as well. It’s taking the idea of dying and simply eliminating it. Because drones are controlled from the ground it’s a heck of a lot easier as no human pilot is actually in the sky. It’s a lot easier to train a joystick handler if you ever played the flight simulator games or flew in call of duty. It’s half the time as you really don’t need so many hours in the sky. Just know where the digital gauges are and it’s exactly like flying just on the ground. We are developing a fighter variant of drone that has a standard armament of a raptor and while it might be slower it’s firepower is exactly the same. No second guessing anymore no loss of life and it keeps going. Although building a drone that can go supersonic is still being developed as the material has to be tough yet flexible enough for the stealth ability and the speed.

In other words making it easier to go to war, remove the possible loss of your own people i.e. no risk it now is a game plan and simple to pretend it's just a video game. The fear of unacceptable losses to your population removes the control to possibly finding an acceptable solution to avoid armed conflict. Because if this is what wars will be civilian casualties will be unmatched in human history and don't give me smart weapons better control machines do fail, computers crash.

You may find it interesting to look at the YF-23 Black Widow II. It is the aircraft that lost head to head against the 5th gen contract to the YF-22 (what is now the Raptor). Only 2 prototypes were ever made and many believe several aspects were superior to the F-22. It is likely the closest anyone will get to a other fully operational 5th gen fighter. The US probably already has started production on 6th gen and is likely already in the research and development stage of 6.5 or 7 gen fifhters. However, rumor has it that Japan is very interested in purchasing what was the YF-23 as a functional stealth aircraft, whose only real world opponent would be the F-22. Is it likely or feasible.... I'm not sure. However, with how aggressive North Korea and China have become in the last 5 years or so, with global interests and military expansion, I wouldn't rule it out for Japan to be looking to bolster is defensive strategy with potentially lethal offensive capable stealth aircraft. I personally like the design of the YF-23 better than the F-22 and only true people with appropriate military clearance know why the contract was awarded to the F-22. Having said that, I'll say that the revenue generated by selling concepts, stealth, materials, weapons, etc.... for the YF-23 to a reliable and true ally of the U.S. is not something the government would completely dismiss as it would be most lucrative. Just a thought. Great reaction. 👍

US Air Force has awarded a $10.8 billion dollar contract to upgrade the Raptors with completion late 2020's. The Raptor will be retired in 2030. It's a exceptionally capable plane. By 2030 it will be replaced with generation 6. One generation 6 one has already been constructed and flown according to the Air Force. Four of eight Air Force front line planes will be retired in 2030 including A-10 Thunderbolts, F22 Raptors and most F15 Eagle variants (one model will be retained) to make room for generation 6. Air Forces drone capability will be also be increased which is in progress now.

He says the F22 will take out an enemy before they get close. OK. But the F22 is a dogfighter, and exceeds in that role. Now, the F35 is NOT a dogfighter. It's bread and butter is find the enemy without being found and knock them out before they even know you're there. And it exceeds in that role. Which is the better deal? I say a mix. F35 first, and if they get close by some chance, then the F22.

5:54. That. That right there is what no nation has gotten down better than the US. See how the plane flips over in seconds? That’s called thrust vectoring. The only Russian planes that have thrust vectoring is the SU-37 and the SU-30MKI. The thrust vectoring technology of these two planes does not even come remotely close to that of the F-22. The technology is probably around 10+ years apart…. Still truly ahead of its time. SU-30MKI Cost - $40,000,000 SU-37 Cost - $45,000,000 - $65,000,000 (I’ve seen both of these figures) F-22 Raptor Cost - $200,000,000 - $230,000,000 (I’ve seen both of these figures) The difference in cost is that enormous for a reason….

Fun Fact: The US Air Force just recently announced the retirement and replacement of the F-22. Hard to believe but they're already thinking about its successor. As new and High Tech the F-22 may seem, its actually approaching 30 years since the first prototype rolled out. And due to the unusual design of the F-22, it doesnt have the freedom to be upgraded and modernized like other older aircraft. So the Air Force knows this Jet will quickly be overtaken by its foreign counterparts. So the next generation of Air Superiority Fighter is already in the works, and the F-22 is scheduled for retirement by 2040.

The reason the F-22 costs so much and less than 200 were made, is because it wasn’t sold to any other allied country. The US paid for all R&D plus production costs. The F-35 was sold to allied countries and therefore the R&D cost was able to be recouped, bringing the production costs down. For fun, check out Growling Sindwinder’s video of an F-22 sneaking up on a Su-27 ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-DnUTPwfuJHE.html

My nephew was one of those F-22 pilots/instructor at Langley AFB. He loooves them! He previously was an F-15 Eagle pilot & did 5 tours in Iraq in the F-15...which was his plane of choice of all aircraft across all military branches. I even got to "fly" in a F-15 simulator at his AFB & it was awesome! But he got moved back to Langley when 26 new F-22's rolled off the assembly line. And then he got spoiled...lol. Enjoyed this reaction...thx!

They are currently installing those fancy integrated helmet sights on the 'F-35 so they're probably also installing them on the F- 22. Oh, by the way, those fancy helmets cost in the hundred thousand dollar range, for each one!

The f22 is over 30 years old .imagine what technology the US has now ,which they usually don't acknowledge until at least 20 years after inception or obsolete. 30 years into the future is where the US is now .

Im all for the F-22 and i think its a beautiful aircraft, "much better looking than the Russian ones btw" but dont dismiss the Russian SU-30's. In a real dogfight we have no idea what to expect if these guys go toe to toe. Ever seen a demonstration of these Sukhois ? pretty much amazing like the F-22's :)
@59thfsaviation79

Problem is that those air show moves bleed energy, which means you die in a dogfight. Russian aircraft are beautiful, well flown, and lethal. It's just that the airshow highlights won't win a dog fight.
