The Raptor was the last major project to have the legendary Clarence “Kelly” Johnson’s name on it. When Johnson started at Lockheed, his first big project was the P-38 Lightning. Then he went on to design the F-104 Starfighter, U-2 Spyplane, SR-71 Blackbird (top speed is Mach 3.2), and was heavily involved in the F-22’s development. In fact, the first fighter from Lockheed NOT to have his name on it, is the F-35 Lightning II.
@mikenolan8044
@mikenolan8044 3 года назад
You left out the F-80 and its relatives the T-33 and F-94. The P-80 (its original designation) was the first fighter to deal successfully with the issue of putting a jet engine inside the fuselage.Earlier ones all had the engine(s) outside. Although the T-33 was long since obsolete as a trainer, it was used by the USAF well into the 1990s to carry ECM pods in teaching how to fight in heavy jamming environments. It was also used to teach pilots not to get suckered into a low-speed low-altitude turning contest with a light weight opponent even if it is 'obsolete'.

All the Raptors were built in my home town, back when they were being built I worked near the base that was next to the Lockheed plant, for lunch I'd get in my car and go park at the Pep Boys (auto parts store) right across the street from the runway I could see everything. It was amazing. I noticed that every time one took off there was also either a neon green or neon orange painted one that flew with it. My cousin works at the Lockheed plant and I asked him about this, he said that the neon painted ones were high ranking Air Force pilots that had armed planes, if the test pilot deviated from their course or became non responsive to commands they were to shoot them out of the sky. They were afraid another country would pay for a pilot to steal one, like big money just like the US had bounty's on the MIGs back during the Cold War, and since nothing else can shoot a Raptor down they used Raptors to fly with them.

USAF vet here. While most of my career was spent with the F-15 and F-16, I did get up close and personal with the F-22 on several TDY's and deployments. The F-22 is my favorite aircraft. While it's official designation is the Raptor, a lot of the maintainers I knew called them the Black Widow. They are beautiful on the ground, move so elegantly across the sky and are the most deadly fighters the USAF currently has. They're so deadly, Congress will not allow the military to sell them, even to our closest allies.

I wished they would of chosen the YF-23. Sounds like it was quite a bit faster at super cruise and afterburner. Even lower RCS. Equal or better at high speed moves. Sounded like the F-22 beat it in low speed and probably a better dog fighter. With the apparent mission of these vehicles dog fighting is a last resort. Plus they actually called the 23 the Black Widow II. Had the hour glass painted on the bottom. At least until stuffy nosed brass said take it off.

I was born at Sheppard Air force Base in Wichita Falls, TX which is the only Air Force Base in the world that is a technical training facility for NATO that is 100% managed by NATO personnel. At one time it was the worlds largest technical training facility for NATO, I'm not sure if it still is, though. Growing up and throughout my adult life I have been honored and privileged to meet some of the finest military personnel from around the world. As I child, I was always amazed to watch pilots train in F-16's as they would literally fly above my home and often break the sound barrier with a loud BOOM! They can no longer train above city however due to crashes (one of which that hit the very apartment in which I had lived in just a year prior). Many different kinds of fighter jets and other aircraft have either passed though the facility or has made the facility its home. I was always in awe being able to see these thing up close and personal. I miss those days! I love your videos; keep up the great work!

If you think the F-22 is big for a fighter jet, the YF-23 that the F-22 beat out for the 5th Gen fighter was even bigger. Look it up on YT to see more about it. But in all honesty, most modern jets, at least 3rd Gen onward (Vietnam-er) were pretty big planes compared to WWII fighters. In fact, a modern 4th Gen or 5th Gen are as large as some of the smaller WWII bombers like the B-24, B-25, and B-26. Because you saw how the F-22 dwarfed those P-51 Mustangs it was flying with. I always like to imagine had we had F-22s and B-2s in WWII how it would have affected the air war. There's a scene in the sci-fi film The Final Countdown (1980) where F-14s go up against a couple Japanese Zeros and it's absolutely no match. One US carrier group loaded with any 4th Gen fighter could have decimated the entire Japanese Navy.

When I was a boy, I dreamed of flying a F-15 Eagle. Unfortunately, my eyesight started to deteriorate. A disqualifying issue. It is the predecessor of the F-22 Raptor in the air superiority role. It has a slightly higher top speed (Mach 2.52 vs Mach 2.24) than the F-22, but is not as maneuverable. It also lacks the stealth capability of the F-22. It also has a greater than 1:1 thrust to weight ratio, meaning that it can accelerate while flying vertically. I have seen the F-22 at airshows on static display. I am looking forward to when airshows resume and the F-22 Demo Team performs at a nearby airshow. If the F-22 were flying when I was a boy, I would have dreamed of flying it.

The F-16 has only 1 seat and civilians fly in this plane. They produced several 2 seat versions for this purpose and to aid with training on that plane. Perhaps they will do the same thing with the F-22 Raptor and make some 2 seat versions.

2 seats not needed, computers do a lot. I wonder if there is a auto pilot switch for it?

@@markjohnson9910 2 seats are not needed for an F-16 yet they do make some. Most of them are used for training. If they can do it for the F-16 then why can't they make a few for the F-22 training?

"Mach 2?" I know that almost everything about the F-22 is top secret, but do they really think we are to believe that the Raptor is only as fast as the F-16? lol Stopppp

The United States should have never wasted so much money on the F-35 JSF. That money would have been better used continuing to upgrade the A-10C Thunderbolt 2 and the F-22A Raptor, as well as better support systems for other Airmen.

Unfortunately they limit the F-22s manuvers to keep forgien adversaries guessing at the jets limits.

It looks like one or two shots were from Oshkosh. That was an amazing show, Courtney, I wish you could have seen it. A giant Nimbus-like cloud was on the right, while the yellow sunset hit it, but lightening was firing from inside the cloud all at the same time, and the F-22 was flying near it. One of the most breathtaking things I've ever seen. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-8_zN-qRE1pQ.html Here's footage from that show. Go to 8:50 to see the giant cloud. 👍👍

Hey Courtney, I'm not sure why, but I picture you flying the A-10 Warthog, or as I like to call it, the flying machine gun/ tank killer. Brrrrrt
