Time for a little bit of brilliant British comedy by the irreplaceable Sean Lock. My American Fiance has really never seen or heard of Sean so I thought what better way than all his best bits.
As for not doing politics, most of the Trump era was comedy gold for Brit comedians, as was Theresa May/ Liz Truss era stuff. Anyway, you talk too much pre video and the clip volume needs to be higher.
One of the few English comedians I found funny. English overrate a lot of eg Sunday roasts, fish n Chips shepherd's pie, football quality however your bands were good back in the day.
@@andym28 really your dissing uk foods?? you clearly had some shite cook or went to some bland places, what because Our FOOD wont give you type two and fondle every cancer cell in our bodies, the a mount of shit that goes into your food no wonder Americans think our food is bland, u lot are just use to the taste of artificial chems and ingredients that your non existing food regulation still allows even when most of Europe have banned them. plus i doubt you had shepherds pie you probably had cottage pie, as shepard pie contains lamb and its much more flavoursome. more then your mince beef variant, with corn??
There's a reason why the US comedians were shocked at how far Jimmy Carr went when he did a comedy central roast in the US, and that ain't because US comedy is harder-hitting!
Robert bro i swer im on your side and love jimmy and think he went heavy here but i swer his worst would be deleted from the episodes sane as frankie boyle they could go times ten but they either held themselves back or the channel did
Lol Yeh this guys clueless. All I will say is 'if you donate just £1/week to Africa to buy nets, we can save millions of mosquitos from dying of aids' He thinks being anti-establishment is right wing 😂😂
He's absolutely right stand up comedy here in the UK is generally terrible and has been for about 15 years. I think you may be confusing panel show Comedians with working stand-up comedians. off the top of my head I could easily come up with 25 great American Comics that do what they want to do regardless of criticism... I'd be hard pressed to come up with 5 British Comics that fit into that category.
Please show her the clip of Joe's poem about naming stranger's privates, the whole thing, especially including Sean absolutely fucking losing it is amazing!
And to think he was fighting cancer during this. This is why his voice was husky as he had had chemotherapy. One of the funniest people on tv.Sadly missed.
Absolutely agree, Miles’ response is my favourite bit, and the start of the most beautiful duo. Miles met Sean’s challenge flawlessly but it seemed to understandably get lost in the response to Sean’s comment
I wouldn't say he pushes any real lines, he tells quite good dark jokes, and has some good wordplays, but other than that he's pretty meh, and sure he's a step above most other British comedians as well, but the only real British Comedian these days is Ricky Gervais.
the famous Anglo-Irish comedian Spike Milligan, who suffered from various forms of depression his entire life and probably PTSD after his war service decided early on what the inscription on his tombstone would be, and his family honoured his wishes it reads I Told You I Was Ill...
The Tiger Who Came For A Pint is a parody of a popular children's book called The Tiger Who Came For Tea with the same style of writing and illustrations.
There are also the parody Ladybird books that use the original pictures from the children's books and use them for funny subjects and look really genuine worth a look!
19:41 that's exactly how I describe him too. When watching all the different comedians tributes to them, they all said the same thing - you never knew where the joke was going or what the punchline was going to be. I remember either watching or reading a tribute to Sean where they said that whenever he was on stage at comedy festival or gala where there's loads of comedians doing sets one after the other, whenever he was on the wings were packed with every comedian there whether they'd been on or not because they wanted to see him perform.
American stand ups only do Americanisms, Burr just keeps reminding everyone he has a black girlfriend. I guess you have never watched Romesh Ranganathan. Frankie Boyle, or even Jimmy Carr. You say you know your stand ups but clearly in your description, you have lost touch.
Well yeah it kind of is publicly. You can get cancelled being right wing, never left wing, so the left are clearly in control of the media establishment
Wow, those 10 years now living in America really shows he knows nothing about where he's from, A lot of things have changed since you moved to America pal
You missed the plot. The "shock and awe" crude jokes that jimmy and them can do there won't go over well here. The political satire that Bill Burr does about how we allow our government to rule us etc. would not go over well there. He is saying that to him, jokes about things that matter are "better" than the crude dark jokes Jimmy Carr has. I don't necessarily agree, I think he is comparing apples to oranges here. I think Burr and Carr are masters of their craft. Its like saying a carpenter who specializes only on tables is better than a carpenter who specializes only on chairs. They can both be the best at what they're doing, because they're not doing the same thing.
Claudia breaking down and asking Sean to stop speaking so she can literally draw a breath just shows his off the cuff genius. Rest in Peace Sean. Also, try Jonathan Pie. You'll see how much he rips into politicians.
I agree tbh, the stand-up scene in the UK is weak. They are all way funnier than American comedians when they're off script which is why panel shows are so good.
I'd say frankie Boyle is one of the most offensive comedians there has ever been.. lol this guy clearly hasnt got a clue when it comes to stand up comedy
You clearly haven’t watched UK comedy in a long time. Frankie Boyle has not lost it AT ALL. Ricky Gervais, Billy Connolly, Sarah Millican, Romesh Ranganathan, Nish Kumar, Milton Jones, Kevin Bridges, Rachel Parris, Ed Byrnes, Katherine Ryan (now British, was Canadian!), James Acaster, Miles Jupp, Lee Mack, Josh Widdicombe, Al Murray, Bill Bailey, Rob Beckett…
@@13.t.a yes that’s because, as I said in the other comment, racist and mean spirited right wing joke are not acceptable. My comment is referring to him saying right wing comedy is better, which it isn’t
Yeah but gammons like this guy won't find comedians who are not sexist, homophobic and racist funny, why do you think he's moved to one of the most right wing states in the very right wing USA?
He thinks the Tories aka THE Establishment and all the posho rich right-wingers who have run the country since the year dot, are actually left wing. Which really tells you all you need to know. I wonder if he realises how left wing and woke Sean Lock was? :S
Woke. Definition: alert to injustice in society, especially racism. There. Now you have learned something. Feels great doesn’t it. Or could you care less?
@@13.t.a Yeah but when you sit on a panel with all black very anti white people joking about killing white people you've crossed a woke line especially when its not acceptable for other groups to say it about other groups its becoming the normal that black people are getting a free pass to pretty much say disgusting shit about certain skin colours specifically whites I don't know about you but to me that racism and Frankie should know better. Also Frankie said that Brits should be ashamed of our country and our role in slavery calling this nation a scrounger a d criminal despite Britain having forced the mostly the entire world to abolish slavery a debt we didn't finish paying for until 2015.
@@samuel10125 we probably should be ashamed of our history and our country. Our politicians fund wars all over the world. Its disgusting. Nothing 'woke' about it 🤷🏻♂️ As for the racism, Frankie isn't racist
@@13.t.a We have nothing to be ashamed of the Spanish and the Portuguese aren't ashamed of the barbarism their empires committed and it was far far worse than anything we ever did we created, railways, trains, parliamentary democracy, the mafna Carta we have so much to be proud we literally built the pillars that modern society runs on today why should we be ashamed of the inventions we made.
'Countdown is for old people'? I watched it VERY often all through primary school and high school...was almost always on the telly straight after school 😅🧠
Sean Lock could wrongfoot anyone. That's what made him unique. Most comedians follow a style, but however good, other comedians could guess where they were going. Lock didn't compete. Therefore, paradoxically, he always won.
For someone that's into comedy, but thinks that American comedians are more "out there" - I think you should watch more comedians. I didn't even watch the content of your video as I disagree with that statement. But, we all have our opinion! No WAY are American comedians as edgy as UK ones, not even close!
Americans get political because they love having a message and giving a sermon. It is all about personal expression for them. Brits keep comedy fun, so even if it is offensive, it is not sincere. This is true across a lot of media, apart from punk rock. American punk rock began in NYC as a bit of fun, but British punk rock was political from the get-go.
i love how well you explain stuff before she gets into it so that she understands a lot beforehand rather than explaining jokes and whats going on as it goes along
What is he talking about, mock the week mock the government every week, frankie Boyle and Russel Howard also do it, Sean lock does it on cats about the queen and thatcher, the last leg does it, Ricky gervais does trans jokes, has he ever actually watched any uk comedian? I’ve also noticed something very recently about gigs in America, when someone tells one of those types of “jokes” (I use joke loosely as it comes across that they’re just expressing an opinion) the audience don’t actually tend to laugh they cheer and applaud it, they just love hearing shit they agree with and will cheer it anywhere. Its also probably harder to do in the uk at a stand up gig without offending half the audience as in America the states and city’s are red or blue as they say so you’ll probably know when it’s safe to use that stuff where as in the uk people could be coming from anywhere you’re never guaranteed to have a majority audience that will agree with your politics and you don’t want half your audience potentially walking out.
We definitely poke some serious fun at politics and the establishment. What about Russel Howard, Mock the week, Have I Got News For You, Joe Lycett, or Jonathan Pie, just to mention a few.
British comedy is genius. It is so over the top, while pretending to be normal. Sean Lock had a brilliant mind for what was funny. Carrot in the box is my favorite segment. fyi: Norm MacDonald is Canadian.
And the shows 'hottie' has a double first in maths from Oxford University. Whilst the other 'hottie' Suzie Dent has a Bachelor of Arts from Oxford University and a Masters degree from Princetown in languages. Two guys in shorts act as the glamourous assistants
The original Countdown was not made for old people, I have watched it from the beginning which was in 1982 and I was quite young then, a lot of the studio audience are mainly older people but the show has always had a young following because it needs a certain amount of intelligence to play at home and it is a game that you can join in with.
1st time watching this channel and only 2 minutes in and I'm thinking "WTF are you talking about? Better in America? More hard hitting? America is much more totalitarian than Britain!....
Love the reaction, you should try Jimmy Carr's 20 most offensive jokes, it might change your mind, Sean Lock passing was a huge loss to British comedy, sadly missed.
Hard hitting is political? Only in America because they only have two teams in the game. Try Jimmy Carr in You Face or Mine. Not political but it does push the boundaries. Another channel 4 late nighter.
British comedians can't be anti-establishment? I can't think of a single comedian who doesn't rip into the UK Government. Also, being right wing isn't anti-establishment when you've had Tories in power for a decade
I'm British, and while I love some of our standups like Peter Kay, Frank Skinner etc, my all-time favourites are Norm MacDonald, Gilbert Gottfried, Dave Chappelle & Patrice O'Neal.
Maybe do some more more research Sir - British comedy is the second jewel in our crown. Americans worship their celebrities', the French, their philosophers, we worship our comedians to an even higher level. Even before Spike Milligan (that's guy that called Prince Charles "A little grovelling bastard " at a award show) and running right the way through, Python and the alternative scene. British comedy has got to the point where if your not seeped in the provence you'll only get half the joke. As for being edgy, we've just had a hugely popular comedy quiz show cancelled because the government put pressure on the BBC to do so because the jokes and satire became too uncomfortable for them , and forget edgy we have really hilarious brutal comics. There are also comics who although still seen on main stream media are reconstructing comedy. Steward Lee in one way, James Acaster in an even more advanced methodology. American comics are extremely funny tending to actual jokes and punch lines, with few notable exceptions, but the more edgy ones are limited by what is considered acceptable by most main stream American audiences even today. Britain has rarely censored comedy with any great success, and we don't have the problem of religion here either, that influence died years ago.
