In terms of innovative drones the British military is really paving the way for UAVs that’ll define the battlefield for decades to come. As well as the missile launching Jackal there’s another new lethal drone courtesy of the Brits and this one is agile, intelligent and destructive. This is the Hydra 400 and we’re going to review just what makes it so special.

Before they can make any claims how good it will be, field tests in Ukraine to prove it’s worth would be a good idea.

There is already an Agreement between the Ministry of Defence and Ukraine to facilitate the supply of 10,000 British designed & manufactured drones to the battlefield. By the way, the UK has been supplying military drones to Ukraine since 2022, including Britsh 'Malloy' drones; the latter company is now part of BAE.

800lb lift capacity is a fully armed combat soldier complete with ammunition. A fleet of these could deliver a combat unit way behind enemy lines with their supplies and evacuate them when the job is done. This could cause mayhem. Ammunition could be brought rapidly to the front and on the return trip evacuate the wounded. This is truly a game-changer.

The problem here is the arms developers still want to produce overpriced solutions. This thing will likely cost 100K £ + and so does each of the Brimstone missiles. That is moving 400K+ to the front risking it on the way and while in use to pay 100K for each high chance tank destruction. When Ukraine can likely do the same with like 3-4 1000 £ Kamikaze drones. And if they get lost on the way to the front or before they get used it is no real loss. The military industry has to change to provide effective and cheap system that can be delivered in 10.000 orders with ease.
@glynnwadeson5605
@glynnwadeson5605 3 месяца назад
I agree entirely. The other UK options shown elsewhere have the same disadvantage, high cost. The 6 jet engines as well rack up cost and maintenance complications. This will likely not make it into full production as it is too expensive and too complex for battlefield operation. Could be useful on warships.

Right possibly as a sentry drone for ships. But yea a very special case and very few production numbers. If they want to make medium size/cost drones then make them use cheap dumb weapons so military can use them again and again and train all day long outside war. @@glynnwadeson5605

I'm surprised they are going down this route of expensive drones... if anything what's impressed me the most is how a basically off the shelf drone for around £500 and a grenade can take out a multi million pound tank. Surely this is the way forward? Just have lots of cheap drones with maybe some software to help navigation and anti jamming properties?
@clivecartey
@clivecartey 3 месяца назад
For your information the "expensive" drones are, already, about to enter service with the Royal Navy who required 'over the horizon' control to deliver an autonomous heavy lifting capability. That drone is the Malloy (BAE) T400 and not only is there a Heavy Lift cargo role but it has the (proven) capability, with an L3 drop cradle, to launch a BAE 'Stingray' torpedo. So, whilst you are correct about the battlefield use of small drones, there is now a service requirement for much larger drones. In the case of the Royal Navy the new in-service vertical lift drone capability is bordering on what the Westland Wasp helicopter used to do for them.

@@clivecartey Add to this the necessity for commanders in the field to be able to operate over the horizon in whatever mode your tech allows you to and the need for the, "Big toys" on top of the grenade tossing variant becomes more apparent. It's never a case of either or as some posters on here seem to think. It's more a case of covering every possible angle and layer upon layer of defence/offence. Thanks for the update on the Malloy system. I remember hearing about this capability a while back and then it all seemed to go quiet (frequently the British way I know).

This video never mentioned the range of the drone. The combat range is less than half of the absolute range so it can be refueled and re-armed. Move it quickly while doing so. Very quickly. Or wait at a distance until the hit is made to see if it recoverable, or have a second one ready to defend the refueling point. This might also be the answer to the SHAHED drone. IDK the cost comparison of a Brimstone to a SHAHED, but the value of the target of the SHAHED should be factored in. Is there a dedicated anti-SHAHED munition that can be adapted to that purpose?

I keep hearing this nonsense and you're partially correct the tank is going the same way as the battleship by incorporating more sophisticated active defences. Cavalry despite all the mythology was never effective in combat against disciplined troops their real value was in scouting and mobility they were rendered obsolete when mechanised units advanced enough to surpass them in these roles. Battleships never really became obsolete so much as they became less and less cost effective it was the range advantages of aircraft carriers that saw them supercede the battleships rather than firepower. A battleship taskforce could annihilate a similar sized carrier group with ease if it could get close enough however the carrier groups better long range fire power and situational awareness would strip the battle group of it's smaller units weakening it's air defence umbrella untill they could land enough firepower to defeat even the battleships heavy armour. This was exactly the battle the Argentine navy attempted in the Falklands war if the general Belgrano and it's escorting destroyers had managed to get close to the more modern and numerous but lightly armoured British fleet they could have landed a devastating blow if bad weather hadn't prevented their own carrier group from launching the planned diversionary attack and HMS conquerer hadn't spotted them they would have pulled ot off.

Australia is testing its anti-drone laser. It’s highly mobile, good for 50 shots before recharge and can take down small and medium drones with pinpoint automatic accuracy . What defence do these drones have against that technology?

Range. Mobile anti-drone lasers typically only have a range of a few hundred meters. These brimstone missiles have a range of at least 10km (depending on the version it can even be way more).

@@tobiasrietveld3819 Fractyl:2, it’s man portable (just) with a range of 2km with 1mm accuracy. If it’s connected to a power source then it operates continuously with virtually zero cost for each ‘shot’. Surely that’s the end of smaller drones?

This is a break through in return on investment. For instance Cost to train an Apache pilot = $3 Million USD, cost of Apache = $35-50 million USD, Cost to fly an Apache for one hour=$3,500 USD.....................cost of Hydr Drone $1 million (guess)..............so for one Apache, I can get approximately 50-60 drones, no pilot training, no pilot salary or retention bonus, no sick days, no $3,500 per hour flight maintenance cost...............NO RISK to humans means more aggressive engagement, short war or battle. I don't know, but from a USMC veteran, sounds like a dam good option

They are just toying things together making a media thing. It would not be a good idea to mix electric and turbines, more effective to go all in for one of the alternatives. Drones need to be cheap and many as they often fail because of electric jamming defenses, this thing is very expensive. They could have made a similar drone more cheaply with the ability to carry the missiles. The missiles seem quite good though.

I mean that looks promising, but one crucial info missing from this video is the autonomy in runtime, cause most commercial drones can only operate for 15 minutes, so I would imagine it's longer for military uses, but I wonder if it can really be useful if it cannot fly for at least an hour
