In August 1988 i took a trip out to Anglia to see the first generation DMU's at work in the Norwich area. We see Met-Cam DMU's, some still with MetroTrain branding on them suggesting they had come from West Yorkshire, at Norwich, Great Yarmouth and Brundall. There an 08 trundled through, probably the Lowestoft shunter changeover move. Lots of semaphore signalling and some shots of old rail lines and bridges at Great Yarmouth near the station, the remians of the old tramway to the docks and other town stations. If you liked the video please subscribe to my channel, there are lots more transport & quirky vids to upload!

My first visit to Yarmouth Vauxhall was in a Metro Cammell 101. I remember the bridge with the tracks that led down the road to the quay. I remember walking it. Years later, I used to chase Class 47s on the "Yarmouth Saturdays" doing 18 Saturdays for 4 years (72 times). Also Class 31s (including pairs double headed), and Class 37s and even a few Class 37/7s ! Then much later Class 68s. I even rode 08 936 from Norwich to the junction, on an ECS move, with the consent of the shunter and the guard. When studying Rules and Regs, I met the head of Norwich Training School at Yarmouth Vauxhall , and he asked me what train I was catching home. He was a Green Cabpass Holder, so I ended up riding 47 477 from Yarmouth to Norwich, much to the astonishment of the bashers I knew well. 47 477 was one of the last locos still in BR Blue at the time. Happy days. Thanks for the video.

@@SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus You managed to capture some historic scenes that needed saving for future generations to enjoy, and for old farts, like me, to jog our memory. Thanks for posting these. We are in your debt.

Fascinating video, thanks for uploading. Utterly detestable DMUs though. I had caught these fairly often to/from Norwich during the late '80s and early '90s, mostly on matchday and used to refer to them as cattle trucks. Those Class 156s were much better. The 158s better still. I think 153s sometimes ran this route too. 2:52 [ GY Station ] Track at Platform 1 (RHS here) has been lifted. Platforms not renumbered, so only 2, 3 & 4 are in use now. 2:58 [ GY Station ] Sidings in the distance were overgrown for decades after this video. Recently brought back into use in the last 3-5 years or so. Now surrounded by security fencing and accommodating many withdrawn Mk2 & Mk3 carriages, Caledonian Sleeper carriages, a Class 31 ( 31452 ) and an 08 Shunter. 3:46 [ GY Station ] This side of the bridge has been fully restored now and is the walkway from the station into town. The other side, now closed still looking in quite bad condition. 3:48 [ GY Station ] White building in the distance now gone. It was a pub some years earlier, I think. 8:07 08936 seems to still exist as of 2014. 8:14 [ Brundall ] Brick shelter has been replaced by a newer, slightly smaller, wooden one. I remember standing in this brick shelter in 2003 when it was magically snowing very heavily. I was aiming to make my way to Stansted to rescue someone from the airport whose flight had been cancelled. Roads were already closed.

Though the Mid and North Norfolk preserved railways do have first generation multiple units, including class 101's. But, its just not the same.

I can remember Semaphore signals at Norwich in the 80’s. Great video as always. Class 101 was great DMU I had many journeys in them.

Sorry, I forgot to add that I love the video - especially slam door stock and passengers trying to get out while still moving ! I remember doing that every morning as I scrambled off at Leeds and I still have both my legs and arms... Of course my brain's a bit addled now... :-)

Thank you.......Yes, some viewers are amazed at some of my videos where the doors are flying open as the train is still moving and off and away before it has stopped! That's how life was and we all survived.....

Late in 1993 I saw a 117 in the bay alongside a real mixed bag of old stock including 4 wheeled vans. Still have a pic today.

love the sound of the DMUs such a shame that there are none running on the main lines anymore, there are many on preservation lines if they can run steam on the main lines why not DMUs?
@SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus

Crashworthiness proably prevents them. Plus the cost of fitting allthe modern equipment needed to run.....

If you want mainline haulage on a first generation DMU, it should be happening soon. The Swanage Railway have just had their class 117 overhauled to mainline standard to operate between Swanage and Wareham. You'd have to look at their website for more details. It would be worth a day out to the railway just for that in my own opinion.

Those Metro Cammel DMUs sound like they have Leopard engines in them. How far does that branch at the end go? Is it still open? That abandoned rail bridge was interesting. Cars parked on the rail line. How typical. In enjoying you rail videos more than ever.

James French they have Leyland BUT 150hp 12 cylinder engines, two per powered car. The three car sets have an unpowered trailer in the middle, most of the two car sets have one powered car and one driving trailer (although some 2-car sets were ‘power twins’ around this time.)

The Branch at the end (If you mean what I think you mean) goes to Yarmouth via Lingwood and Acle. The abandoned bridge has had one of the halves repainted and there is a proper walkway over it

and still plenty of crap cars as there is a car dealership there selling anything for £200 or so.

I had a tour around these branches a couple of summer's ago and the bridge at Great Yarmouth is now painted pretty though is otherwise basically unchanged.... It used to be the track to Yarmouth quay and there is a book but I haven't got the title to hand. Look at the maps at National Library of Scotland at maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/#zoom=15&lat=52.60759&lon=1.73429&layers=171&b=1 and these show Great Yarmouth railways at their peak. You can see the station, bridge and quay but also the extensive Midland and Great Northern trackage with two stations (including Yarmouth Beach) Just a small note on the DMUs - I am willing to be contradicted but I think that the 'Metro' livery was an early West Yorkshire Metro livery variant? Happy to have someone prove me wrong but I don't recall South Yorkshire achieving much branding? (Sheffield and Leeds were my main hunting grounds in my teens...) I had wondered if East ANglia would be one of the last homes for 2nd Gen DMUs but GreaterAnglia have removed that possibility :-(

@SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus
@SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus 3 года назад
Well, it was filmed in 1988, how many times has Norwich been modernised since then? It was re-signalled around 1983/84 time and lost its semaphores.......

I guess shunter would of been looped few times with 15mph max speed
@SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus
@SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus 3 года назад
Probably not, if it left straight after the hourly train left Lowestoft it would be ok. It only got busy-ish after Brundall and by then you are almost back to Crown Point....
