A BR vid from the summer of 1991. We see the action at Watford Junction one evening, mostly Inter-City trains with class 86, 87 & 90s with the odd freight train (47 & 86) and an NSE class 313 EMU. If you liked the video please subscribe to my channel, there are lots more transport & quirky vids to upload!

Some classic traction here. I was at Warrington Bank Quay a few weeks back and it was very quiet with bland traction. The freight traffic had died compared to times past!

Soi Buakhao That section of WCML between Weaver Junction (where the Liverpool Line diverges) and Euxton Junction (where the Manchester to Preston via Bolton line joins) is very quiet now with so little freight traffic

The train at 8:19 with two Mk1 BGs is probably a boat train from Holyhead to Euston. These frequently had two BGs, for the amount of luggage carried.

Quite surprising just how many InterCity trains stopped at Watford back then.
@SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus
@SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus 4 года назад
Yes, until Virgin Trains VHF timetable Watford Junction had a good Inter-City service. It had a large car park and was considered a parkway station due to its close proximity to the M1 & M25. Not any more though......

Yes at the time I was an LUL staff pass holder and you could travel on “any train” Watford to London

Man this clip has just reminded me how the 87s used to scream at you as they slowed down! - The blowers for the brake rheostats would be working overtime to blast away all the heat out of the top - often visible as a heat haze above the loco in a similar manner to the hot exhaust gasses of a diesel loco, which of course they weren't! Whoever said the early AC electrics were dull clearly just never took the time to get to know them at all.

I love the sound of 86s and 87s powering up & down. Use of DVTs seems to have been hit and miss, some trains still with BGs. Would that second one with the two GUVs on the rear have been a Motorail?
@SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus
@SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus 4 года назад
The DVT's were still fairly new and BR was having problems with them. The GUV's are indeed Motorail vans but i can't remember if they still ran on service trains at this time or just on the Sleepers (in which case this was just a stock move, bit like the first Down Road IC that has a MkIII Sleeper behind the loco, it was just a stock move). Still some good mixes of coaching stock around this time.

Was Motorail normally that busy? I’m always wondering why it was shut down.

@SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus
@SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus 4 года назад
I'm not sure if there were through workings to Blackpool at this time. But you certainly had to be on an express to get to Preston in order to change.
@djpeekay25
@djpeekay25 4 года назад
Yes we changed at Preston to get to Pleasure Beach. I think there was a seldom service to Blackpool North. Our trains were the Glasgow service.
@SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus

@@djpeekay25 The Pleasure Beach i think is on the Blackpool South service not North. And yes, it runs hourly with a 2 car DMU, even today!

a stretch of third rail on the down fast...? never noticed that before.
@SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus
@SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus 3 года назад
That odd bit was their for the transfer of 313 EMUs. They would creep off the DC lines on 3rd rail power to that point before putting their pan up and running to Bletchley Depot for maintainance. The old class 501s used Croxley but this was shut when they went and Bletchley was used, the 313s being dual voltage. This move normally happen late at night & early morning. I do have another vid taken here where a low hanging air pipe on an 86 makes contact with the juice rail at speed and there was a terrific flash! All caught on film.....

please post! When I was a kid me and a mate used to get the 114 bus to WJ. It was like another world! Two experiences there; 1 a dmu failed on the St Alban's branch and was rescued by a 25 and 2: an up fast clipped a parcel trolley which hand rolled towards the platform edge... One of those old things with steel wheels. Could have been much worse but just threw it back across the platform and clouds of smoke from the emergency braking. Interesting trips

Great video once again Soi! I know you're probably sorting through hundreds of tapes but do you recall whether you visited either of the two branches out of Watford with a camera (Croxley Green or St Albans Abbey)?
@SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus
@SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus 4 года назад
I never did Croxley with video although i have been over the route with a class 501 EMU and a 38 stock into Croxley Depot the last night bakerloo trains stabled there! I do have some DMU vid of the St Albans Abbey branch from around 1986 time plus there is a couple of shots of the branch at the Watford end on this upload here ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ABw_5CEIFCU.html
