Baseball fans have been waiting for a player like Ohtani for the last 100yrs. He's simply a unicorn. It's a pleasure to see him play.

and in 2023 he's having an even better season.

Technically Babe Ruth didn't do both at the same time. When he was with the Red Sox, he was a stellar pitcher and an average hitter. When Babe Ruth was traded to The Yankees he stopped pitching and that is when his batting stats went up. Shohei is doing both simultaneously, often in the same game. He is a Unicorn.

Ohtani’s June 2023 is just out of this world. He is just amazing.

And he's playing at an even higher level this season. Just hit 15 homeruns last month alone. Dude is unstoppable

Ohtani is having an even better season this year, the Angels are in the playoffs race right now at the halfway point of the season, despite the Angels going through some injury woes, in big part thanks to him. He's definitely the best baseball player ever imo, and if anyone argues that he is not, it's usually the argument of longevity, like for example 10 good seasons are better than 3 all-time great seasons. Everyone wants to see him in the play-offs, and he's already shown in the WBC that he can perform in the biggest stages of baseball. Hopefully it happens this year, if not, I just hope it happens sooner than later, before his peak is gone. But who knows, no one thought he could do both before 2021, then we thought 2021 was his peak and 2022 rolled around, then now in 2023 he's even better. He might just be able to do what he does for a long time, despite not many people can even just hit or pitch at his level for an extented period of time.

And right now he is on an absolute tear. Just hit a 493 foot moonshot for his 30th homer of the year. This beast had 15 (!) homers in June.

I know who the best players of the last 50 years are. None come close to this. What this gentleman is doing is absolutely unheard of. As a lifelong baseball fan and player this is something I'm glad to have seen for myself. And I don't expect many to follow in his footsteps. My only fear is injuries. Baseball seems easy but it takes a toll on the body.

Great story! I didn't know this video. I think it tells well about Shohei's life in Japan and the USA. One thing I want to add is that he was repeatedly criticized by famous baseball players and critics. They strongly think he can't work as a hitter and pitcher at the same time. But Shohei believed in himself and finally, everyone noticed his talent is totally different from the other players. Some legendary players in Japan apologized to Shohei for having said extremely negative opinions about his decision for becoming a two-way player. His talent is really on a different level.. Nobody could believe it would be possible until Shohei himself proves it by showing his success.

Thank you so much for introducing Ohtani's history to people outside of Japan. When Ohtani was 23 years old, his 5th year of NPB, he did give opening speech of the up-coming-season to all Nippon Ham members, "You want nightlife? Going to drink? Want to do many? If so, we can NOT get victory. If you want to win, we just do playing baseball!" Since some members had fool around in their off-season after their victory in the last season, Ohtani has been always focusing his whole time on training & baseball. He is an amazing human being. Very purpose-oriented. He has lived in this way with joy since he was 14 or 15 years old. What a pure young boy who just love baseball and want to be the BEST BASEBALL PLAYER in the world. We know Shohei Ohtani, you deserve it.❤❤❤

Ohtani is the best baseball player of my lifetime by a wide margin. What he has been doing for 3 years now is so ridiculous, you'd never believe it was possible if it wasn't for him.

He is the greatest player baseball has ever seen. The man hits 495-ft home runs, throws 100-mph fastballs with five other pitches in his repertoire, and runs faster than most Major League players. Babe Ruth played in an era where players weren’t specialized to their respective positions; Ohtani is dominating in an era where players in general are stronger, faster, and understand the game better.

I have shared this story in few other videos but I will comment it again as I really want more people to know about this. Ohtani’s coach for the Nippon Ham Fighters was asked during an interview what impressed him the most about Ohtani. Interviewer was probably expecting “batting “ “hitting” or even “stealing bases” but he immediately answered, “His personality.” He said Ohtani was the most respectful, polite and the nicest human being he has ever met. The interviewer then joked. “Oh come on! There gotta be something wrong about him! Share with us!😂” but the ex-coach continued, “There really isn’t anything negative about that man. He is just perfect.” In Japan, being respectful and humble goes long way in any field you are in. That’s probably the biggest thing Japanese are proud of about Ohtani. It’s so easy to become arrogant for what he has done but he still is the nicest person you will ever meet.❤❤❤❤❤

I don't know how old is this video, but something that wasn't mentioned here, he was MVP in the WBC, and is getting his best season so far, he is leading his team in every single category both as pitcher and hitter, right now there's no other player that hits the ball harder than him, this is completely insane!!!, he is leading the both leagues in Home runs and RBI, he is going to be a bad example for young kids who wants to play baseball because, that would be almost impossible to be like him, i just can say good luck whoever tries to.

Im so curious too see how long he can do both at an elite level. Crazy to think how dominant he'd be on one side if he just focused on 1 or the other. I hope he can keep this up for a long time though. Its just much watch baseball no matter what he's doing. I truly believe even if his career gets cut short from the demand of doing both he'll be a lock for the Hall of Fame. You cant tell the story of baseball in the future without telling what Ohtani has done

You've have to be gifted genetically, possessing both power and speed. Have the mental strength of a Samurai. I live in Houston and the Angels are, nominally, a division rival but I LOVE Shohei and I try to see him every time they’re in town. Obviously I hope we win every game we play him but I also love seeing him do what he does. I never take it for granted

Great work ethic, great heart, great humility, great personality ,,, and also BTW, great atheletic ability (power, speed, mind) and unbelievably great results. As a giant Braves fan, I know he won’t end up with my team but as long as he doesn’t end up on another team in my division, I’ll be happy. Shohei Ohtani was not born perfect, nor was he created by anyone overnight. His physique, muscle quality, and core balance did not come naturally to him, but are the result of 12 years of self-evaluation of his own physical and mental characteristics from the age of 16 to now 28, working daily to improve his muscle strength, stamina, core balance ability, and flexibility. He has made his own self-improvement plan, and he has achieved it. We must not forget that. He is the result not only of God's grace, but also of his intentional self-improvement of his God-given mental and physical condition so that he can play an active role in baseball pitching and hitting. This has involved managing his daily hours, eating properly (content and quantity), sleeping properly, strength training, and devoting himself entirely to making his current physical abilities a reality. Of course, this is not an easy task for anyone. However, at the age of 16, he has seriously thought about what he should do and how he should do it if he were to achieve what most people would have given up as impossible, created a remodeling scenario in his mind, and practiced self-discipline. The result is what he is now. He has also never given up on his ability to play both pitching and hitting, despite the opposition of many coaches and adults to his two-fisted approach to pitching and hitting. It is impossible to talk about Ohtani without mentioning his upbringing in which he struggled with himself. And the great thing about him is not the result, but the fact that he challenged and achieved this impossibility. That is the most important point.

One thing that will be interesting is to see if this leads to more players coming out as two way players as they come up. As seen in this video, so many coaches and executives saw it as too much of a risk to let him do both before he proved them wrong, and clearly this has to have also happened to other players as they come up too. I know I've heard of a lot of current major leaguers who pitched in college before choosing to focus on hitting when they went pro, so hopefully more of those guys will stick with the two way playing instead.

Babe Ruth is definitely an all time great, but Ohtani is simply on another level, he qualified as an all star for pitching AND hitting, and is much better at pitching than Ruth was

The fact about Japan broadcasting every Angels game as well as a Ohtani focus cam is true. I was in Japan in April and at the time the Angels were playing the A's and the game was being broadcasted and in the corner was a feed focused solely on Shohei even if he was on the bench

I’ve been a baseball fan since the mid 80s. Diehard Cubs fan and Shohei Ohtani is without a doubt the greatest baseball player I’ve ever seen. Barry Bonds is probably the best hitter I’ve seen and I’d probably say Greg Maddux was the best pitcher I’ve ever seen, but Shohei is doing both at an extremely high level with a high baseball iq, style, humility, and class. This guy is an absolute unicorn and as a lifelong baseball enthusiast this is mind blowing. He literally leaves me speechless at times, we are all blessed and lucky to be witnessing the greatness. Absolute stud.

There is a scenario where Ohtani wins the AL Cy Young award this year AND breaks the AL Home Run record that Aaron Judge just set last year. Would undoubtedly be the greatest season in sports history.

No one can predict how long he can excel at both hitting and pitching but with him, anything might be possible. Even so, at some point he might choose one or the other, and there’s no disgrace if he settled for being one of the best power hitters in the game.

Fernando Valenzuela (Mexican-born left-hander; 17 MLB seasons; 1980 winner of both Cy Young and Rookie of the Year) deserves mention. Signed by the Dodgers in 1979 and brought on after adding the screwball to his arsenal, Valenzuela was huge in Los Angeles. Valenzuela was one of the better hitters at a time when the National League did not use designated hitters; occasionally Dodgers Manager Tommy Lasorda would use Valenzuela as a pinch hitter. Valenzuela had a unique windup style (including a skyward glance) that was fun to watch. Rumor has it that Valenzuela called (predicted) his own no-hitter in 1990 after he and teammates watched one on television earlier the same day. Although Valenzuela played 17 seasons (between 1980 and 1997), after a brilliant early career, shoulder problems became an issue (as I recall) possibly from Lasorda’s overuse of Valenzuela in the rotation and the screwball (the pitch, not Lasorda). It was easy to root for Valenzuela. Thanks.

He's the only player who made me think baseball is very interesting 😅 his attitude above all the talent is what attracts people. He also mentioned in interview where he's a person who is a bit good w/ baseball but being a better person is much more important.

I am a big Angels fan. I attend probably 30-40 games a year and never miss a broadcast. If you want to see Ohtani in a world series, he will need to be traded to a better team. The Angels are not a competitive team, nor does the management seem to care to be competitive. They just want to market and Orange County is a very relaxed sports fan base so the money will flow regardless of their success on the field. That said, I think it might make financial sense for the Angels to come up with the 600 million to keep him around. The value he brings to the business is well over that amount over the next ten years between international broadcasting, advertising, and sponsorships. Don't forget, he can probably still hit after he retires from pitching. That's probably another few years of selling merch, broadcasting rights, and international advertising. Whatever happens next season, I will support him. Best player of all time. Feel super blessed to have been able to enjoy watching him play this long.

I admit I've been one of the skeptics as someone who has been a baseball fan for more than 25+ years. There's no way Shohei Ohtani can be an elite pitcher and hitter at the same time, right? Injuries aside, he has been up there, if not right at the top. I still wonder to this day if he committed to one, would he have been one of the greatest in the game in that aspect of the game that we have ever seen? The conclusion I always come to is who the heck cares? He's not Albert Pujols at the plate or prime Randy Johnson on the mound, but is elite in this crop of major leaguers in both and that says something. Who cares if he could have been better than bonds or pujols as a hitter or on the level of koufax, maddux, clemens, seaver? The fact that he's so close to the top of his competition in both aspects is absolutely as cool as being be best in such a specialized sport. I love Ohtani and what he has done for this sport. Also lol at your comment about Messi being a goalkeeper, that is a good comparison and also a hilarious thought.

He's hitting a home run every 10 at bats this season. It rarely gets better than that. One year Babe Ruth had a home run every 9 at bats. I think it was 60 home runs and 540 at bats.

yo btw ohtani's 2023 is so far his best season, and since the video references it so much, WAR wise (Wins Above Replacement, a baseball stat used to measure how valuable a player is compared to the league average replacement) he is on pace to have a top 5 season of all time, in a time where just getting to the major leagues is one the hardest things in american sports

It's definitely easier to be pro in two sports than it is to be a top pitcher and a top batter at the same time. Mind you that all other top pitchers have to rest between each time they pitch, but Ohtani actually goes out to bat when other pitchers would be resting. Not only does he bat when other top pitchers are resting, but he's one of the best batters, leading the league in many batting titles as well. There's no one in the league doing anything even close to what he's doing.

It's a straight up cheat code to have Ohtani and Mike Trout on the same team, I know there's a bunch of other role players obviously that are crucial but the Angels in that LA market have the cash to sign the best of those guys as well.

A baseball reporter asked an anyonomous GM if Ohtani could get a $550 million contract. Apparently the GM said that was too low. He could get the biggest contract in North American sports history when it's time to sign.

A sports reporter emailed a team General Manager recently what he thinks Ohtani will be offered in free agency next season , "11 years $500,000,000?" The owner replied, "Too low!"

And now he just signed for 10 years for $700,000,000!

Im just joining the rest of the choir here, but Ohtani is even more amazing this season. It’s actually insane how people are already calling him the GOAT, yet I can’t disagree at all. If he keeps up this production for even 5 more years, he’ll be the undeniable GOAT.
