British Special Boat Service vs US Seal Team 6

The Special Boat Service is the Royal Navy’s maritime special forces unit. The SBC is under the operational control of the Director Special Forces. The Royal Navy’s Special Boat Service traces its origins back to several units that undertook raids, sabotage and reconnaissance from canoes and submarines during WW2. The origins of Seal Team 6 can be traced back to Navy Seals created by Richard Marcinko in 1980. In 1987 Seal team 6 was dissolved and replaced by Naval Special Warfare Development Group or Devgru, which is still commonly referred to as Seal team 6.
Most of SBC operators are selected from the Royal Marines Commandos. There are two selection courses each year: one in Winter and the other in Summer. Candidates wishing to serve with the Special Boat Service must have completed at least two years' regular service. SBS candidates take part in Joint Special Forces Selection alongside SAS candidates, with their selection and training diverging after the end of the JSFS course. JSFS lasts for 6 months. It is broken down into multiple phases. Before progressing to joint UKSF selection, SBS candidates must pass a 2-week aptitude test, which involves Boating phase, Combat fitness test, SBS swimming test, carrying a folding canoe for 3 miles, canoe paddle and Diving phase. After selection, at which point SAS candidates have passed, SBS candidates continue to the Swimmer Canoeist, also called boating and diving course. It lasts eight weeks and covers specialist maritime skills such as canoeing, diving, boating, underwater navigation and demolition, negotiating surf zones, and submarine infiltration.
According to some estimates the SBS numbers are around 300 standby operators. The Special Boat Service is organized into 4 squadrons C, X, Z, M in addition to a reserve squadron. Squadrons are organized into 4 16-man Troops. Troops are often broken down into 4-man patrols, 2-man canoe teams or 8-man teams (a typical boat-full). The men of C & X Squadron were specialists in canoe and small boat operations. Z Squadron specialized in underwater attack and insertion. The men of M Squadron are trained for Maritime Counter operations. They are ready to respond to threats on ferries, cruise ships, hovercraft, oil tankers, and oil rigs. It is now believed that the SBS squadrons take turns rotating into these roles.
The Government Accountability Office report on special operations forces states that Seal Team 6 has a total of 1,787 authorized positions, with 1,342 being military and 445 being civilian. Devgru is divided into 6 color-coded squadrons. The Red Blue Gold and Silver are assault squadrons. The black squadron is responsible for Intelligence, Reconnaissance, & Surveillance while gray squadron is responsible for mobility teams, transportation and QRF. Each assault squadron is also given a specific nickname. For example, Gold Squadron is known as the Crusaders, Red Squadron as the Indians, Blue Squadron as the Pirates, Silver Squadron as the Headhunters, and Gray Squadron as the Vikings.
Each assault squadron is usually led by a Commander, is divided into three troops, often called assaulters. Each of these troops is commanded by a senior commissioned officer. A Devgru troop is further divided into smaller teams. Each troop has around 16 members and is led by a senior officer. These teams are led by senior Seal officer. The rest of these teams are filled out with more Chief Petty Officers, Petty Officers First Class, and Petty Officers Second Class.
The assault squadrons are supported by a variety of support personnel, including cryptologists, communicators, EOD technicians, dog handlers, and sometimes airmen from the United States Air Force 24th Special Tactics Squadron, the Air Force's JSCO element.

SBS and DEVGRU work together regularly as do the SAS and Delta Force. There's a lot of cross training which makes it almost impossible to say who is the best. They cherry pick ideas from each other.

SBS do a lot of their training in freezing waters and waters so murky you can barely see your hands in front of you. The fact that they have at least 40 years more experience has got to factor into it. The Seals have more operators and resources.

Yeah I've heard seals talking about training with our s.b.s and they said they all respect the sbs because of the conditions they work in and the lack of the equipment we have, they were also impressed with the way the sbs guys would improvise when they lacked a peice of equipment. there's a reason we have the best special forces in the world and that's the men who get selected to do that job a big percentage of the sas and sbs are made up of highlanders either Scottish,Fijian or ghurkas. we kick ass when it's time to party .😂

Most SBS operators come from the Royal Marines Commandos, already considered elite. Only 1 / 1000 applicants make it through RM “selection” to earn their green beret as a RM commando. Even then, there’s a further >90% failure rate on UK SF selection.

@andydavies9699
@andydavies9699 3 месяца назад
As a former Royal it’s a tricky one as RM are primarily green army. When in a green role they are probably in part similar to SEALs as a whole, but with the teams having a wide range of CT usage the SFSG RM element is closer to SEAL teams, but we also have Mountain leaders who Are super elite and Squadron Reconnaissance Teams (SRTs), so we have elements that are more specialized so it’s not like for like - but Royal marine basic training is the longest and most arduous basic training in the world and even our band members do it as a commando first then a band member. So 1% of people are capable of becoming a Royal marine and we often trained with seal teams and MARSOC so it’s hard to know where we fit lol
@Durzo1259
@Durzo1259 2 месяца назад
@@andydavies9699 Was hoping you could clear up something here that still has me confused. Wikipedia also says RM training is the longest infantry training of all NATO countries, but every source says 32 weeks (8 months). US Pararescue takes 2 years to complete. German KSK, 4 years. SAS & Delta (if memory serves) 9 months. I'm not understanding how it works out to the longest.
@lukeweidemann9166
@lukeweidemann9166 Месяц назад
Royal Marines are not Army anything. They're part of the Royal Navy. Recently, RM basic has been increased to 36 weeks. That qualifies the Marine as a "General duties" Marine, as in, Navy equivalent of a Field Army Rifleman. After that, the Marine can go on to do specialist training in a variety of roles.

lol!!! not being funny this is yet another american driven, american made upload!!! now lets look at some brief facts, the SBS DON'T just specialise in or around the water as this feature states!!! it heavily trains with the SAS & has multiple completed missions within land situated conflicts (IRAQ, Afghanistan, Argentina, Northern Island, multiple nations in Africa, multiple nations in Europe as the SBS did originally form during ww2, Kosovo, Bosnia & so-on now as this is also heavily american biased... the pass rate for both SAS & SBS are usually below 20% "combined" unlike the Navy Seals... entry into the SAS & SBS you must be an active serving military service member (except for reserve units... however educational standards/expectations are above basic secondary & college qualification) You also must have served for multiple years & only have a 2-3yr remaining in your military term of service.. not forgetting usually have an above basic trooper rating now as mentioned!! the training periods for both SAS & SBS are several months for your basic passing out, that is NOT your complete training, as you then have multiple years for your chosen specialist area... so trying to pass seal training to SAS/SBS well your massively mistaken

@@ssgtomen621 don’t be dense. Seals aren’t tier 3, they’re tier 2. Do you even know what the tier system implies? Ut has to do with the amount of funding a unit gets. Lindsay Bruce is only referring to shooting skills when he ways that they are “better”. He even gives the reason. By that time, his squadron had’t served time in Special projects yet, which is CT training, meaning that shooting is the nb 1 focus. U like the SAS, Delta force have CT training part of their selection called OTC. Delta force in general sets much more importance on shooting than the SAS do, because pretty much their soul tasks, unlike the SAS
@ssgtomen621
@ssgtomen621 3 месяца назад
@burgundycommander7589 Fully aware of JSOC tier system. Point, vanilla seals are not comparable to the SBS. In some lose equivalent, that video link is misleading by equating tier 3( yes, I believe SEALs are tier 3, or not oh well, learn and let live) to the level of SBS, which is just not true. DEVGRU would be more comparable, and no shooter from any JSOC unit has admitted that the SAS/SBS are better. High praise, but never better... True, but all the same, you have a comparable organization, an SAS shooter who has already gone through the process provide insight on what is already been long established. Before or after, it's expected. Delta is just next level in CQB. Which is more than what that dude with is cheap could offer. Mate, thanks for the added context. Though, i got to add that CAG is multi disciplined, not just in shooting. Their troops/squadrons are trained in more than just HR and CT, like the SAS, go through additional training post OTC in specific skills- Special Recon, mountain warfare, Jungle warfare course and other specialized school within the US and abroad.
@burgundycommander7589
@burgundycommander7589 3 месяца назад
@@ssgtomen621 i never justified comparing regular seals to SBS. And they’re tier 2. I don’t know where you’re getting the notion that they’re tier 3. In terms of role, sure Dev is a better comparison but in terms of selection, Delta is more comparable to SBS. It’s a well established fact that Delta are the best shooters, and they are so for a reason. You get good but with repetition. More repetitions = more time. Deltas primary role is CT. Of course they have smaller elements who specialise in other skillsets, but overall they’re not as much as an allrounder like the SAS/SBS are. The US has the means to have 2 units fully dedicated to CT. The UKSF doesn’t have as many units like USSOCOM and JSOC does. The US has the numbers and funds to have many different units specialised in specific tasks, the UK doesn’t. That’s why the SAS do CT rotations. Also unlike JSOC, the UKSF also has to fulfil domestic obligations. You’re basing your opinion on whether or not operators say certain things. JSOC members not saying whether or not UKSF is better means nothing. UKSF doesn’t have OTC. They have continuation training after selection. Delta OTC is part of their selection a d it revolves around CT, just like Green Team. That just further solidifies my point that they are CT dedicated units.
